Any Newfoundlanders would have heard the song 'Let Me Fish Off Cape St. Mary's'. My friend's Grandfather (Otto Kelland) wrote the song. She has his violin (over 100 years old) that he played the song on, and wrote it on. He died last year, aged 100. I can't help but be jaelous of her violin. It's a little beat up, but she has a bit of Newfoundland history, in a sense.

Sorry. Yeah, violins tend to age; doesn't that suck? xd I'm sorry about the bow and microphone though... that's terrible! eek ...Marzaret, I think we have different ways of trying to work through our affection... I suppress mine, usually.

I'm very envious of my teacher's violin. It's really nice with flaming on the back and a pretty rainbow colored bow . . . he plays with such . . . full sound, and he ends each note to its fullest, like he's honoring the note. Ugh, he's 23. Maybe in the end, I'm just jealous of him. rolleyes

I've never been jealous of another's violin. Actually, I'm usually the one envied. My violin is incredibly light because the wood is abnormally thin. When my mother first brought the violin to a shop (when I was very little, or before I was born) the woman there told her that because it was so thin it was useless. She kept it anyway and when I was 13 we brought it to another person who said that even though it was very thin, it was so well made that it was probably sturdier than some of the super-thick modern violins being made today. So my violin weighs half of what my stand partner's weighs, and I have a lightweight BAM case to match. I'm also envied for my chinrest. It's really tall (three inches, perhaps, I havn't measured) so I don't use a Kun or anything. Well, I use a thin sponge to keep my neck from getting mangled by the metal bits. Most people say that the chinrest is comfortable but the lack of the Kun is terrible, so I guess I'm not really envied for long. Anyway, the violin is 150 years old this year. They don't know who made it, but they know the exact year in which it was made, and they know that it was made in France (a town only a few miles from where my mother was born, actually). The date and birthplace of the violin is what made my mother purchase the violin in the first place. She turns 50 this year. ANYWAY, I am envied by my friends. I never let them use my violin. Some people thought I was a total b***h when I wouldn't let the orchestra director use my violin on the first day of orchestra to demonstrate something. First, he was a cellist/bassist; second, he had chaulk on his hands; third, he would always complain about my chinrest and then there'd be a five minute discussion about it. I always end conversations that my friends have when they talk about the cost of their violins and how so-and-so just spent $5,000 on their violin so it must be really good. Then they go on to compare the prices of their violins and then I calmly say when asked, "My mother bought the violin for $275. It cost $370 to repair it. The replacement value of the violin is approximately $16,000."

A few months ago, my parents took me to go look at DePaul's college violin shop. They even let me try them out. And I found one I liked that was like $5,000, but they said I couldn't get it. I was mad because the violin was so pretty and sounded really good.
