It was a quiet, misty morning in the Moorwoods Forest. A breath of air danced through the trees as a girl of seventeen danced through the trees. She was singing softly to herself to the music ringing in her head.
When the last eagle flies over the last crumbling mountain And the last lion roars at the last dusty fountain In the shadow of the forest, though she may be all and one They would stare unbelieving at the last unicorn
With the first breath of winter through the flowers it's icy And you look to the north and the pale moon is rising And it seems like all is dying and will leave the world to mourn In the distance hear the laughter of the last unicorn

The girl, Arilyna, finished the song with a final wavering note and her sweet, high voice melted away in the trees. She sighed deeply, taking in the scent of the forest. "How beautiful," she said, glancing at the sunlight that could break through the branches of the trees. Just then, she heard the snapping of a brach and turned around quickly.

"Hello?"she called out. "Is anyone there?" When no one answered her, she shrugged carelessly and turned around again. She made her way to a small forest stream and sat down beside it on on a flat shiny rock. She relaxed, listening to the rushing water as it made its way through the forest. At this moment, Arilyna heard more rustling to her right. She glanced up and gasped silently.

Stepping out from the shade of the trees was a small foal. She clumsily picked her way through the brush, attmepting to reach the stream. Her legs were long and slender, too long for her body. "She must have just been born," Arilyna said outloud. Startled by he sudden noise, the foal jerked her head up and looked suspiciously at the girl. Her ears perked up, on the alert for danger.

Slowly, Arilyna stood up, trying not to frighten the little foal. She watched as the foal stretched her neck forward, trying to get as close as she could to the girl without actually moving. Arilyna laughed outloud when the foal stumbled, her balance thrown off. Frightened by the sudden noise, the foal tured tail and ran. It was long before Aylina could hear a squeal of pain from the direction the foal ran off and she immediately ran into the trees.

Ari saw that the foal had gotten tangled up in some vines. Ari couldn't help but pity the poor creature. She approached slowly, humming a soft tune to calm the foal. The foal quieted almost immediately, soothed by the music. She allowed Ari to untangle her with gentle hands.
