Harper didn't like stores. Not unless they were book stores, and even then it had to be a good one.
Why? Her siblings suspected it was the groups and groups of people. Harper was far from shy, she just didn't like crowds, was all. Either way, the truth of the matter was the hawk found it flat out boring.
She wasn't completely sure how her sister had managed to drag her out here to begin with, but she'd slipped away from her pretty easily.
The place was full. Of everything. Books, toys, electronics, gardening and more. Harper had visited the book section before, picking one she found mildly interesting out and then retreating to the large room that held the funiture.
A few employees had given her wary looks for sitting on one of the swing sets reading, but a silent glare was enough to get them to go on their way. Hawks eyes could be scary ones if you annoyed them enough.
Back and forth. Back and forth. She swung gently and turned the books page. It was thick, brown and had no pictures or words on the cover.
Reading it was about exciting as being here. None.

Lian had escaped from Sciz. He didn't particularly like shopping for clothes, even if they were his own. His father always knew where he usually browsed anyways. No stranger was going to take him away either, he knew better then that. He'd beat em up if he had to, he went to classes for that.
He had been in the electronics sections, watching one of the recently released movies on the TV. An employee would repeatly come over and ask him if he was lost. Lian would flatly tell them he was watching the movie and to go away, well until one employee was a little more forceful. He lied that his guardian was just over in the next isle and left.
"Well thats no fun" he huffed and walked to the other side of the store. He looked up at one of the over hanging signs looking for the 'toys' section. "I still don't understand why the toy section isn't next to electronics." He mumbled while turning the corner onto the isle with the playground equipment.
Here was alot of things to climb on, yet only if he wasn't caught. Lian walked up to one of the set up pieces before he noticed the girl on the swing. Ah but it was a girl with wings, and he'd never seen some one with wings before. he walked up quietly to her.
"What cha doing?" His tail swished slightly.

Speaking of wings, Harper was finding them increasingly annoying. It was hard to read the way most people would when you had to position them so they didn't get crushed. More trouble than they were worth, if you asked her. Maybe she thought that because she still couldn't fly...
"Reading," the girl answered in monotone, not bothering to look up as she turned another page. A minute or so passed and she got this nagging feeling whoever had been talking to her hadn't left yet. How bothersome.
"Can I-" she began, glancing up at him. However, his appearence startled her, and for just a second she forgot what she'd been saying. "..help you?"

Bright fire red-orange probably wasn't that common of a color for furry animals. Not to mention the big fuzzy ringged tail made it look like he was what happened when a raccoon and a bear have a kid and dip it in red paint. Though Lian didn't seem to notice her pause and got close to lean over and look at the book.
"I was just wondering why you were reading while on a swing set." getting a look at the actual pages, he sort of scrunched up his nose a bit. Its like the ones his dad read all the time. They weren't that bad but he did like the ones with the color full covers and picture inserts.

Taking note of her earlier reaction, one might say Harper adapted to others differences quickly enough. Appearence-wise, anyway.
She closed the book and set it in her lap, folding her hands over it as if she was sitting across from the queen of England. Harper acted so proper all the time, and it was part of the reason many of her sisters and brothers (and cousins and whoever else lived in the house) accused her of being 'boring'. Her guardian said she was just 'too adult'.
Could you be too adult? Harper often pondered. Maybe so.
"I'm reading because I'm stuck in this horrid place and it's terribly boring," she answered sourly. This place had put her in a bad mood. The books they had here were boring, too. Eesh.

Lian wondered why she was acting the way she did. Wait, maybe all girls acted this way, but he hadn't ever met another girl his age before so he wouldn't have known really. Girls had cooties too didn't they? Lian shook his head the thought a bit, though he could have been shaking his head at the way Harper was acting too.
"This place isn't that bad, but i guess it could get boring. I just don't like the people in the funny vests." Lian was of course talking about the employees who had bothered him earlier. "But they have everything here, you could find something to do before you left."

"The store employees," Harper corrected politely, then nodded her head. They certainly were annoying. Her tolerance for people was low as is, but they just insisted on pestering.
Wasn't it better for her to sit here and read rather than throw a fit or storm down the isles? She'd seen it happen more than once. And a lot of times the kids looked older than her!
"They do have a lot," she agreed in an almost irratated voice. They had so much her sister could stay here for hours. Ugh.
"Oh, I'm Harper."

"My dad takes forever to file through clothes, I don't see how it could take that long." Lian got on the other swing, minding his tail not drag all over the floor. He pumped alittle bit to get the swing going enough to rock back and forth gently.
"Hi, mine's Lian, or just Lee if you want. Do you like books?" he looked at the book in her lap again. Why despite the fact it was probably out of his level he was still kinda of curious.

At the question, Harper smiled. Not that Lian would know, since a second ago he had been a complete stranger, but smiles were a rarity for Harper.
Not that she was some tough, cold-hearted individual. The problem was she became annoyed much too easy, and it led to having an almost constant scowl on her face.
"Yes, I like books a lot. I'd usually be at the library right now." There was an awkward pause. She'd never been good with conversations, and attempted a weak, "Uh...do you?"

"I like some books, I haven't found a series I like yet though. Sometimes I borrow one of my Dad's to read. He reads a lot of mysteries." He took one hand off the chain to rub his chin. "I'd like to find a series that I liked though. My Dad says I don't read enough.."
"Do you have a favorite er.. genre?" He grinned though looking a little nervous. He hoped that was the right word. Sciz had used it when talking about the differnt types of stories.

"Oh, no, I couldn't say I do." She thought it over, and still came up with nothing. There were so many she liked, including the one he mentioned, mystery stories.
There were so many! How could any living being pick only one?!
Harper set the book on the floor and stretched her arms up. Her wings ached, too, so she stood and carefully stretched them. They knocked things over sometimes. ...Okay, more than sometimes.
"You're from D-Corp?" she guessed. There were so many of them out there these days.

"I guess there are alot. uh.." Lian paused for a moment, oh right D-Corp. "Yea I'm from D-corp." He muttered after watching Harper get off the swing and stretch.
"Your wings are really cool. Your feathers are very shiny too. What bird are you?" He'd never seen any birds of prey upclose only on the TV or in a book. Even then he never paid attention to what their names were.

"They're bothersome," she countered with a sigh. Couldn't use them to fly, always knocking things over. If only ripping them off wouldn't hurt like hell and make her bleed to death. Shame, that. "But thank you."
"Red-tailed Hawk." She had the tail to prove it, too. But she tended to keep it hidden. It was ugly and, like her wings (which she couldn't hide), tended to knock into things. "You're a...raccoon?"

"I guess they woud be. I never though about it. Alot of people wish they could have wings and fly with out realizing how annoying it'd be to have wings. Everytings made for regular people." Lian hopped off the swing, gaining a glare from a parent ushering their child around by the hand.
"Like my tail gets in the way sometimes, or people step on it. My pants all have to be taken to a tailor to put a hole in for it." He looked behind him watching his tail twitch for a second.
"A raccoon? no." He laughed lightly. " I'm a Red Panda."

Harper stared at him without even realizing it. When she finally did, she blinked and wrinkled her nose back. It didn't create an angry expression or one of distress like doing so usually would with her.
In fact, she looked... amused? "I hope you don't mind me saying so," Harper began in a lighter voice than she usually spoke in. "I've met a lot of kids from D-Corp, and you're one of the only ones I'm not trying to think of a way to get away from."
Which, in Harper language, translated roughly to: I think you're fairly smart and I can stand your company for longer than ten seconds.
"Red panda, are you?" She plopped back down carelessly, ignoring the look a passing employee shot their way. "I've never met another 'red' animal before." The swing rocked back and forth lightly, the winged girl staring at her feet thoughtfully.
