Ok, so part of my inspiration for founding this guild was as a companion for the Buddhism guild. The buddhism guild has an introduction to Buddhism, but most people who know about the Eternal Religion will probably agree with me when I say that it is impossible to a similar introduction to Hinduism. As such, anyone interested in HInduism should read the following two books.
Hinduism for Dummies
AM I A HINDU?
I know one of them is a dummies book, but every ethnic Hindu I've talked to has recommended it or the second book to me, which I have yet to read, so there you go. This thread is basically for the discussion of these two books, as well as the suggestion of any other introductory level books people might have read.

I also find the website, India Devine quite useful. So, if anyone is interested or looking for more information, it seems to be a good resource. They have quite a few informative articles and a discussion forum as well. Another website:Although I find this one less easily navigated, it carries many minute details that I find quite intrigueing. As well as holiday/festival calendars and a good many topics.

Wiki's Sanskrit is borked. Repeatedly. I don't know /who/ told them that making an i sound involves adding the vowel TO THE NEXT LETTER WTF >_<

Oh, one more thing: Will this guild recognize "converted Hindus?"

Well, seeing as I'm one, yeah. Besides, according to Hinduism, everyone is a Hindu, they just don't know it, so is it really possible to convert? (more of an idea to contemplate than a serious question.)

Ramacharaka Well, seeing as I'm one, yeah. Oh, boy... Ramacharaka Besides, according to Hinduism, everyone is a Hindu, they just don't know it, so is it really possible to convert? (more of an idea to contemplate than a serious question.) Let me try to put this as concisely and politely as possible. Hindu = Indian. It's not racial exclusivity. Anyone can practice Sanathana Dharma. That does not make anyone "Hindu." There's a reason why Smrthi doesn't list any conversion practices: anyone can practice it at anytime in his/her life. Some schools of thought insist that everyone follows the path of the Eternal Truth, even if they don't call it that. But please, unless you're South Asian, don't say you're Hindu. That's just weird.

Kalorn i have to completely disagree with you. race should not have anything to do with Hinduism. would you consider the Christians and Muslisms in India, with South-East-Asaian ancestory to be Hindu? Southeast Asian? Probably not. South Asian? Absolutely. Race has nothing to do with the conventional perception of "Hinduism," but understand that there is a semantic difference between a Hindu and a Sanathana Dharma adherent. I covered it in the personal introductions thread. Addendum: I'd even go so far as to say that Afghanis and Buddhists of Indian descent from Sri Lanka are most definitely Hindu.

Since I'm a poor b*****d and the other religions I've found have sites that give out free texts I have to ask...
Anyone know of any Hindu sites that give out free copies of religious texts or introduction to Hinduism texts in English? ninja
