I haven't finished Xenosaga Ep 2 because of college and such, but I am going to post some of Carl Jung's ideas.
The stages (The colors) I just copied and pasted off a site. Much easier for me. Everything else, I typed.
Archetypes--Ancient images that come from the collective unconscious. First original model of which all other similar persons, objects, or concepts are merely derivative, copied, patterned, or emulated. They are programmed in us.
The collective unconscious--The deepest level of the psyche. This part contains inherited experiences of the human and prehuman species.
In other words, it contains cumulated experiences previous generations (Even our animal ancestors). We are never fully aware of it. It influences all of our experiences and behaviors.
Nigredo ("blackening"): the first of the four alchemical stages. Jungian equivalent: en-countering the shadow; also, the deflation that follows when an inflated ego invades the collective unconscious.
The shadow (Is basically the Id in Jung's works)-- This is the archetype of darkness and repression. It represents the qualities that people do not wish to acknowledge, but tries to hide it from themselves and others. Not using the shadow makes a person dull and lifeless.
For people, it is easier for them to see the darkness in another person, but not in themselves. The shadow can be projected symbolically as demons. Jung believed people have to realize they have darkness within themselves in order not to be taken over by it. Many people refuse/never realize this darkness and slowly become under it control.
Interestingly, Jung do not believe the shadow is evil nor good. It is more of a place where we hide our darkness.
Albedo: "whitening," the second of four alchemical stages. In it the alchemist cooks, washes, recirculates, and pulverizes the Prima materia into a silvery ash ready to be reinfused with soul and spirit. This corresponds roughly to the anima/animus stage of individuation.
Anima--The feminine side of men. Jung believed the anima originate from early men's experience with women. Anima represents irrational moods and feelings. This is an archetype.
Animus--The masculine side of women. Represents thinking and reasoning. It influence the thinking in women, but it does not belong to her. It belongs to the collective unconscious.
Everyone has an anima and animus.
Citrinitas: "yellowing," the third of the four basic stages of alchemy. In it the purified ash of the albedo ("whitening") reunites with soul and spirit and acquires a golden color symbolic of growing consciousness. Corresponds roughly to the Wise Old Man/Wise Woman stage of individuation.
Wise Old Man--This is another archetype. It represents wisdom, meaning, and humans' preexisting knowledge of the mysteries of life.
Rubedo: the last "reddening" of the four alchemical stages. In the reddening, a dawning consciousness makes contact with the Self, symbolized by the Lapis Philosophorum.
The Self--Jung believed the goal in life is realizing self. Reaching to obtain balance within the mind.
If you want to read more about his theories, here is the link:
Click hereA few of the stuff mentioned in the game will not be there. I think the reasons the alchemy and a few other of this works are lesser know than the unconscious.
The title of the book mention is the game is "Psychology And Alchemy" by Jung.
There is a little something here:
