First of all, do NOT worry. I am not posting spoilers. Read on.
So I recently completed the last Thieves' Guild mission, and I have a few words of advice for anyone who plans on completing it in the near future.
Before you start, make sure to have the following: - A LOT of Repair Hammers (20 or more) - A LOT of Health potions (30+) - A full set of decent armour - Magic weapons - Filled soul gems to recharge said items - A bow
You also might want to know some Night-eye and Chameleon spells.
The reason I'm posting this is that I went in completely unprepared and went through grueling hours of killing monsters with an armour rating of about 4, pratically broken weapons and no potions. I did manage to complete it, but that's because of my awesome sneaking skills.
Time to move onto the next faction. rofl

Or.... you could go in with a mixture of some of those.
Magic Armor of Chameleon. Though it was not originally my idea, it makes you impossible to see, though it's a pain to get the supplies to make it. It takes five Grand Souls, and five pieces of armor. With that armor, you could essentially run through the dungeon, and punch out any bosses(if there are any) that get in your way, while they draw, and then sheathe, their weapons in confusion.

I was just using a 25% Chameleon spell... which didn't work very well. Is Chameleon less effective against zombie/ghosts/etc than NPCs?

Not necessarily, but I think that the monsters that are closer to a human appearance tend to have a higher sneak skill. I think...

Or you could do it how I did it.
With just Flare, Control Creature (The Power, so one time use a day), and Heal Minor Wounds.
Your fists, a necromancer's robe, two rings, one a Gold Ring with an Emerald, the other one with Frost Shield Constant Effect.
Then the required items, I believe two Weak Healing Potions, one Weak Sorcery Potion, Torches and 100 lockpicks.
And the boots and arrow.
For awhile, I thought I wouldn't have a bow to shoot it with, and I was really mad, however, luckily there were skeletons with them, just incase.
I spent about an hour to get through the sewers and what not. Another half an hour to an hour in the palace, and then I was done.
Those missions were amazingly fun.

I managed to get through it only wearing boots and gauntlets. I left all my normal armour in my house 'cause I was like "Hmmm I'll just sneak around." I brought a bow with me, but no arrows. A few enchanted longswords, which quickly wore out. Plus a few health potions. As for spells, Heal Minor Wounds and Night-eye. It was pretty difficult. D: Near the end I just had to run for it instead of killing the vampires I snook (snuck?) past in the beginning.

I can sneak right in front of a rat, but zombies and ghosts can see me from pretty far away. Depending on your sneak skill, whether or not you run or walk, how much light there is, and how heavy your boots are will affect your ability to sneak. At Jounreyman, you ingore the weight of your boots, so that no longer comes into play. At expert, you ignore running and walking, and at master, you ignore an opponent's armor when you attack them while sneaking. It could also be that beasts tend to be lower-levelled. Things like Liches, Xivilai, and Gloom Wraiths are all humanoids, and they are the highest in their types.

Thsi quest has to be one of the single most awsome quests (apart from the main one) in the whole game. Word to the wise for anyone trying to do it - get your armorer up to 50+ and take 30 - 50 hammers as wel as some of the other stuff. AND LEARN RESTORATION! (I don't think that I need to say that you need to have sneak maxed out because you should already have it at 100 by the time you go to do this quest).

This makes me laugh.
Everyone's all, "Get all this awesome stuff, and high skills and stuff."
I had a sneak around 60, a robe, two rings, an amulet, a few potions, and a lock picks.
Either my opponents sucked, or I'm just really lucky.

I loved that quest, at one point i got fed up of fighting so i decided to run through them all, i got cornered by 4 zombies, 2 ghosts and 3 skeletons eek i had to jump right over them it was funny xd im suprised i got out of that one running is not always the best thing to do but it can be dam funny whee i did'nt put any armour on i got bored so i decided to make my character wear her listeners robes so she could run faster i could'nt be bothered to sneak, i did that on some of the main quest missions though.
