This is a thread concerning those words we don't happen to know when we're reading. Even those with huge vocabularies and amazing decoding skills will come upon them in their reading adventures. So what do you do when you come the the little buggers? What was the most recent word you've found and not known?

I don't remember what the last word I looked up in the dictionary, but it was very long and the author could have used a much shorter and more easily understandable word if she had felt like it. mad

Normally it's not too hard to guess what a word means by the context. The only book that gave me trouble was Lolita by Vladimir Nabokov.

I'll try to guess what the word means at first, but if I'm in a position to look it up ( I do alot of my reading at school when things get slow ), I'll look it up then. Of course, if I'm too lazy to do that, I'll just remind myself to find out the meaning later on.

I can't truly recall. But the author didn't even use it In the right context, Which made me even madder.

I look at it in context while I'm reading, and then I look it up later.
Actually, while I was in middle school (or high school?) I made a list of all the words I didn't know when I was reading. I turned that list into my vocabulary for the week. Sherlock Holmes was a good source of unusual words for me.

I'll usually try to guess the meaning from the context that it is used, but if that doesn't work then out with the dictionary! I can't remember the last word I had to look up from reading a book. I usually sit down and flip open the dictionary to look for new words anyway at times. I used to do it a lot more when I was younger and I would find words that I would spazz about for a little bit. Things like insidious which means "seductive."

It's been a while saince I've had to look up a word, but the weirdest books have made me do it. Looking up a word found in a Star Trek book can make a girl feel a little weird.

Hmm.. I had to look stuff up in the dictionary when I first started reading, then I got in the habbit of reading a page or two a day, just randomly. However I stopped that after three weeks or so. It enabled me to find alot of meanings; I never usaly have to look up words now. If I do I guess, but then if that doesnt work I get out my vocabulary books all the way down to 5th grade. I have a habbit of keeping my vocabulary and math books o.O

This realy bugs me, I infer the meaning of the word from the context but everyone else looks it up.
It could just be that I have a dislikeing of dictionaries.

Usually I'll try to work out the meaning; if that doesn't work then I'll go and ask someone. If neither of those options work then I'll go to the dictionary.

I usually guess the meaning from context--I'm pretty good at that.
The words I look up tend to be ones that come up in conversation. My family is inclined to debate meanings & one or the other of us will run to the dictionary to see. The big dictionary, not the little college one that has all the words I know already razz

I try to figure out its meaning for the context. If that doesn't work and I can tell the word doesn't really have that much importance overall, or that I can still understand what's happening without it, I just ignore it. If none of this works and it just won't go away, or if the word has a particularly interesting sound or spelling, then I will grudgingly go get a dictionary and look it up.

This book I read called City of Saints and Madmen was pretty heavy, and had a lot of words that I didn't know, but the author had good context clues so I used them as a crutch for my new age vocab. When it comes to words, I have a good memory with remembering, though not so much for physical objects. [IE; My Earth science class rocks. gonk ] Straying off topic! <_<
Dictionary = quite useful. 3nodding
