Which do you think Batman fits into? Is he a hero? or is he an Anti-hero?

I got into a little debate with someone in the CD. I was wondering what everyone else thought.... and why. And any proof to that idea?

There's no ******** way that Batman is an anti-hero, I posted my reasoning in CD.

He's a hero. Obsessively. Tirelessly.

Even his paranoid contingency plans are designed with The Greater Good of The World in mind.

The problem here lies in the fact that during the late 90's, "Anti-hero" became the buzzword of the industry and the label was improperly applied to Batman. This is why he's an a*****e now and so badly requires fixing.

Batman's been acting the anti-hero since the eighties though. DKR and all that.

Owning some 300 issues of Batman in the 80's I can say unequivocably that he did NOT spend most of the 80's as an 'anti-hero'. DKR was one story, and a miniseries at that. In Detective, Batman, New Batman Adventures, Brave and the Bold, and every other comic he guest starred in, the theme of the 80's Batman was his DETECTIVE skills-NOT his punk-punching or establishment bucking skills.

Until year 1 retconned him, he was deputized by the Gotham Police. And even post-retcon his relationships with the authorities were strong as were the stresses on the foundations of his principles, not how he acted out against criminals as a catharisis for his own problems.

I miss 80s Batman. He was a good egg.

Hey, even Catwoman was deputized by the Gotham Police before Year 1 reared it's prostitutionally revisionist head.

Batman is very much a Hero.

yea, i enjoyed those old 80's comics.. the detective in batman was definitely in the forefront of the storylines. i fondly remember the clayface one where all four were used in the first one's masterplan. batman was apparently much more pleasant in those days as he seemed to team with looker quite often. wait, werent they both a part of the outsiders then?

in any case, id say he's more a hero. anti-heroes can b considered a villain in some views.. batman doesnt fit into that category for me.

on a different note, anyone here read those who walk in darkness by john ridley? good anti-heroes in there.. the kind that i kept goin back-n-forth about rootin for. tis superhero-related as well. 3nodding

Of course Batman's a hero! It's just a shame that those mean old writers at DC have to make everything be his fault and be guilty all the time.

Hero ... unquestionablly.

Some stories portray differently. To knowledge, mostly non-canon material ... as said, things changed when non-canon material started to be mimiced, then, as Wally said, "anti-hero" became buzzword. Anti-hero became akin to cool, the rest ... history.
