I was wondering, as Lolita has a heavy basis in victorian culture, do any of you have any pastimes which hwere popular during the victorian era?

I personally have quite a few, which are largely derived from victorian pastimes.

First off, I love taking nature walks! I love going birding, and picking wildflowers and wild blueberries when the weather is nice. I've always loved such walks, ever since I was a kid. I also live picnics, and have a large picnic basket for such occasions.

I also partake in an old victorian pastime called 'letterboxing'. Letterboxing originated in England ca. 1880. here's a basic overview of letterboxing:

Quote:
Someone hides a waterproof box somewhere (in a beautiful, interesting, or remote location) containing at least a logbook and a carved rubber stamp, and perhaps other goodies. The hider then usually writes directions to the box (called "clues" or "the map"), which can be straightforward, cryptic, or any degree in between. Often the clues involve map coordinates or compass bearings from landmarks, but they don't have to. Selecting a location and writing the clues is one aspect of the art.

Once the clues are written, hunters in possession of the clues attempt to find the box. In addition to the clue and any maps or tools needed to solve it, the hunter should carry at least a pencil, his personal rubber stamp, an inkpad, and his personal logbook. When the hunter successfully deciphers the clue and finds the box, he stamps the logbook in the box with his personal stamp, and stamps his personal logbook with the box's stamp. The box's logbook keeps a record of all its visitors, and the hunters keep a record of all the boxes they have found, in their personal logbooks.

For more info on that, as well as a list of letterboxes and clues for your region, go to http://letterboxing.org/

Also on my list of lolita-esq pasetimes is having tea parties. Whenever I have anyone over, I'll always be sure to offer them tea, and if they accept, then I'll bring it out in an elaborate tea service.

As for other pastimes, I love going to museums, as well as theater(when I can afford it)

It sounds alot like geocaching!

I think they embroidered alot, I started to try, and it's was kind of fun!

The only card game with two teams of two that I've ever played is spades ^^;

And when I was younger, I used to go to art museums and science museums to wander around ^^ I should do it again someday....

As strange as this might sound I've gotten hooked to Victorian dancing...I'm fair at it but I find it quite enjoyable! I've tried my hand at embroidering but..well that I'm not so good at.

Probally, although I believe pool was viewed to be a men's game.

Although that doesn't matter now.

i have actually done letterboxing. it was really spooky... the town where i was was very old and with the exception of paved roads seemed untouched by time... it was fall and the leaves were all orange, red and yellow, it was very enjoyable. many of the paths to the boxes required to pass by old cemeteries. O.O and it ended at the top of a mountain where you could see the entire town. it was kind of magical in a way. after that i used to hide boxes with riddles, drawings and a little information about me in them in old stone walls. i hid them in vermont, newhampshire, connecticut, maine, and massachusettes.

i wonder if anyone has found one yet... and what they thought. XD

Letterboxing sounds fun.

I'm not sure, maybe treasure hunts, and this game, Rigamarole? I think that's how it's spelt. sweatdrop I read about it in Little Women, and it sounds very fun. 3nodding
