I've been pondering Journals recently. From my studies I've seen how important a journal can be to the understanding and improvement/training of ones magical skills and especially in the realms of Chaos Magic (Where some of us are quite literally wandering far off the beaten path, into areas best charted less we totally lose our way)

I just was wondering, as I seem to have issues even a mundane journal reliably, how many of you all here do have one and use it regulary?

I don't.... sorry... I have the same problem. :/

See I can see how important it is, SO many times I cast my mind back and think "How did I do that again?" but the memory's out to lunch.

Is it really that important?

I don't see why it would be. I mean, the point of Chaos Magic is that it doesn't matter if you were waving around a rubber chicken tied to a banana, what matters is form following intent, innit?

So... if you don't remember how you did that, do something else this time. Am not understanding the problem here. whee

I'd heard people mostly use it for post hoc-related reasons; either to figure out how much of it is their imagination going wild, to remind themselves of how much isn't, or both, depending on how your mind works.

Is that not correct?

Well maybe I look on Chaos Magic a little different, to me it doesn't matter that you waved a rubber chicken over your pc case and it suddenly booted, it's what waving a rubber chicken over a pc case makes you feel like.

Maybe over time you might find personal small things that help in reaching a magical state and would want to keep them without forgetting, and of course, taking notes and a journal does help keep ones imagination going totally off the scale (while keeping it engaged)

Now I'm not saying that a Journal is for everyone or even that it's important. I just think that as a tool they're fantastically useful. The memory can be a fickle thing, and keeping notes as one goes along (especially if you're starting down a path that doesn't really end) can be useful. They make a wonderful reference and make a great aid to learning.

Maybe I'm just wondering how you all feel about them.

Fair enough.

It seems that many people use this guild's forum as a sort of 'public journal' so that they can not only keep a record of the things they try but also share them with others. Is that similar to what you mean?

Basically. I'm thinking about a private, oldschool tech journal (woodpulp technology, woo!) as opposed to posts on a journal like LJ.

Oh, that.

I find it easier not to try to write down feelings unless I need to for communication; for whatever reason trying to define them makes them harder to evoke. But that's just me, and if you don't have that problem, it probably would be a good idea.

Yeah, so I gathered (I still fail to grasp the concept of 'livejournal') but in my experience people mostly write things down as a sort of a log of the day, before going to bed at night...which seems to be in any case superseded by access to a computer.

The other thing I thought you might mean is what my dad has recently started doing: a sort of pocket notebook that he carries around with him and whenever he's struck with inspiration (even though he's not an artist or writer or anything) he jots it down. That way, some day, when it comes time to write his memoirs, he can remember those fleeting moments more easily.

I find that my journal is a great way to keep track of the patterns of my activity/inactivity in magic to try and help me figure out why I seem to go through cycles with magic. I'm also using mine to transcribe any spells or rituals I do or want to refer back to because it's starting to get ridiculous when I'm repeatedly pulling books off the shelf to refer to one thing or another to the point where it just ******** up whatever it is I'm trying to do and my floor is covered in various books bristling with neon pink post-its.

I suppose so, yeah. I haven't really read anything about Wicca proper, but it seems like Wicca asserts itself in almost everything I read. xd

It's a simple way to pimp neat crap you find/create to all your friends at once, and there are communities for everything you could possibly imagine. It's kinda like having a newsfeed with twenty zillion neat things on it, easily organizable and with comment features (and it has newsfeeds too).

My girlfriend convinced me to get one of the damn things, so I might as well use it. Any suggestions in terms of chaos magic or occult related communities? Saving me the legwork of having to find the diamonds in the rough would be very much appreciated.
