The previous night you heard the cries of a large cat -- no doubt, everyone on the island has heard them. This night, you hear low, unpleasant groans coming from the nearby laboratory. The sounds aren't human at all, and rather faint in comparison to the shrill wailing of the night before. But you still hear them, the rumbling, deep roars and growling.

In comparison to the shrieking cat, this is probably a most welcome change.

Later that day, if you decide to visit the kennel by the beach to check in on your charge, you may notice that the great white bear is gone. The huge steel cage that once held him is empty, wiped clean, and waiting for its next prisoner. If you look around the stable you may notice other animals have gone missing, as well as a few new faces leering out at you from behind bars. Some of these animals are things you've probably never seen before, or only read about in books.

When you get back, you find a folded up note tucked beneath the crack of the door of your flat.

Alphonse Moreau
July the 25th, 1889

Mr. Firth, I have stupendous news. Progress has been made on your great white bear, and you may be surprised by what it is beneath the skin! It is such a fascinating creature, although he is facing numerous problems with the heat. The removal of the fur should help the beast's situation, and later I plan to flay off a few layers of the bear's insulatory fat so that it my be helped further. You should come check on him, I am sure you will find this most interesting. Meet me in front of the laboratory later today and I will show him to you.

Blaine's sleep had been less than enjoyable that night. A man who favoured the night time to begin with, he had been beyond disturbed by the yowling of the cat the previous night, going so far as to eventually sleep with his mother's crucifix necklace held tightly in his palm. That night it had been more tolerable but nevertheless his sleep had been scattered.

Most of his morning had been spent looking over notes and reading up on ursine anatomy, a field he was still relatively new to. At least as far as he could see, the differences were not so great between humans and bears as to be unbridgeable, each muscle and bone had it's place, just not neccisarily a similar shape. It was this comparision of the two shapes and how they related that was the subject of much of his reasearch at the moment. However, it was impossible to check exactly the dimensions of his subject without first of all paying a visit to the vast creature he had dubbed Lachlann.

The bear himself intimidated Blaine a tremendous amount, larger than any beast he'd ever laid eyes on, the polar bear seemed to speak of lands where the climate was something he could only dream of and where survival wasn't something of a joke. He was just glad that on most of the observations he'd done the bear had been calm, often sleeping or indifferent. However it seemed that todays observation and note-taking session had been cancelled, Lach's cage was deserted and the stables were now populated by other even more foreign creatures.

He didn't hang about long, not liking the hungry looks many of the inmates were giving him.

When he got back to his flat, he was surprised to find someone must have been round to see him, unfolding the note he read what was written with great excitement, progress was underway! He couldn't wait to see what advancements had been made so far, the project setting his mind positively aflame with possibilities.

With a grin, he headed into his room to get himself cleaned up a bit before heading over to the laboratory to meet the Doctor.
