Alright, this is basically a Roleplaying talk, but you don't have to RP to know what I'm talking about.

So, a good number of us roleplay or know of roleplayers who act out Phantom or their own versions. Like phanfics, y'know?

And a good number of us have our preferances who to play and why.

But too many say that Raoul or Christine are the hardest to play. Not true. We know their side of the story. We have in-depth personality traits given to us so we know how they should act and think. Out of any character they are the easiest to play or portray.

Whether or not you have a biased opinion on them, they are the easiest to act out. Now I'm not saying there aren't those who still can't grasp the character, but for the most part they are roles that are already made and waiting for a player.

So, who's the hardest character?

ERIK

But you're thinking, "oh but Uta, we know how Erik should act!"

No, actually, we don't.

I came upon this theory not too long ago and contemplated expressing it here. We know Erik's mad. We know he's in love. But that is ALL we know.

Characters, in order to have a personality in Roleplays that can be clearly expressed, must have histories. Erik has no official history. He's a blank slate as far as a past is concerned. So, we can't say whether he had any love in his life or a friend before/besides the Persian, or just what he is in terms of a person.

Another thing is, we don't know his side of the story. We can't delve into the mind of Erik and see how he felt about something because he's not in the main narrative.

We know Erik's ugly. We know he's (I'm quoting PhantomByNight) "batshit insane", but not the extent of the madness. We don't know if he has a Jekyll/Hyde syndrome or multiple personalities or if he's so far into depression and woe that his nerves are thin and anything could cause him to have violent moodswings.

We cannot express, truly, how Erik feels. We all have felt unwanted and strange, but not to the point of madness. We can't become Erik because we know, pretty much literally, nothing about him.

So, he is the hardest character to play.

Discuss. heart

I definately agree that Erik would be the most hard to play but also I think he might be the most fun to play... because I am that sick and twisted and it's late and don't feel like qualifying that.

I'm not saying it's not fun to play him, but he's definately the most difficult to get very accurate. But it's fun to try. :3

Y'know...you do have a point, Utakan.

I would've said it was the Persian, but ehh. Or maybe the rat-catcher. He doesn't have much of a backstory either. xd

Well hardly no one uses the Rat-catcher in their stories.

And you do bring up a point. The Persian would perhaps be another difficult character to play, but we do get a snippet of his history from Erik and we do have his narrative (last half of the book). So even he gets a fraction more info put in about him than Erik.

Yeah, I think Erik would be the most difficult character to play, because he's a very complicated character, and he has to have a lot of different qualities at once.

Not directly different qualities. We all have different qualities, but they can't show at once. If Erik were to try doing that, he'd have violent moodswings more often. Now I do believe he has depression-wrought moodswings, but they aren't frequent like that. They're almost tempermental.

I agree with Uta, and yeah I was gonna say the Persian too. Although admittedly I had a hellava good time playing the managers heart in that one rp ...that's been dead for a month or two now sweatdrop

But just as it's hard playing Erik I think on another level it would be hard playing characters that aren't really well used. I know Uta does a lovely job Madam Girie (sp?) but other characters like Carlotta have their level of difficulty. It would be difficult to play her as something other than a 2d character (although she may have appeared that may in the movie) a talented rper would go the extra mile to try and add more dimension to her, maybe even a level of pity to understanding to her diva-esque character.

Mme. Giry. 3nodding I'll admit I enjoy playing her. I play females so rarely anymore and her personality is close to mine, so I can play her easily.

And I will agree all character have their levels of difficulty and a good roleplayer can always get the best even from such a minor character or a 2-D one. But Erik is almost 1-D, if there is such a thing. He's swarthed (is that even a word? Well, it is now) in mystery and darkness. It may seem cool, but it's hard to portray and represent. Hard to even grasp at how you would go about that.

I mean, y'know, we can't have Erik running around like, "OH EM GEE I IS TEH EMOZ CUZ SOME GUY STOLE MAH GIRL AND NOBODY BUT THE MANNEQUIN IN MY BED LOVES ME!!"

LMAO! Now that is funny. And unfortunelty (sp?) that is how he is protrayed in some fanics/rps.

One of the reasons I want to go to school for psychology is to try and figure out what mental disorder he has, and I also love psychology! ^^

I agree with Phantom Phan 4ever, I'm actually planning on majoring in psych and I assure you I'll be coming back from class and rereading PotO alot.

But... I've never actually beeing in a real PotO RP... just PotO based RPs (Don't ask) and I was usually the Raoul character... once I played the Erik character, it was tricky but I really got into it.

My cousin has a book with a 'commentary' by Jerrold E. Hogle in the back and it has some stuff in it about mentall illness stuff and Erik...I'm going to read it all and tell you what it said.

Anyone have this in their book?

That's not the point of Erik. The man had so much wrong with him psychologically. Just playing him to, scuse my language, ******** with the management would be very Out of Character.

No offense, but you have just proven my point as to why no one can play him right.

Dear Gaians,

I've taken on something of my own Phantom persona for the forum I inhabit most. As if you peons could not tell from my username. It is not role playing but I do attempt to take on an Erik-like mind set... now I only need to find a GCDer to obsess over. Uta, would you care to fill the role?

I shall write to you soon for my allowance of 20,000 Gaia Gold
Your obedient friend and Angel, the Phantom of the GCD.
