Chibi Hige's IoDM Character Development Workshop!
In case you didn't know it, I'm Chibi Hige, one of the shop's co-owners and founders. I also role play Doctor Moreau and Timothy Matthews. I love being one of the people to run this shop, the art is increadible, and so are the characters. Reading the role play is one of the great enjoyements.
If there is one thing I pride myself on though, it's creating my own characters and helping other people with theirs. I'm a long term gamemaster and role player in online and offline games. It's really one of my great passions, nothing is more fun than helping someone flesh a character. In the past I've helped a bit with various characters and concepts.
That said, I'm opening this workshop. It's purpose is to help new questers with very basic concepts, or people who don't feel like their character is developed enough, as if it's missing something and aren't ready for the character critique thread yet. I'll sit down, look at what you have, and toss suggestions at you, they are always that, suggestions for your character, nothing that I'm requiring of you.

Randy2love Name: Heather Lin Basic Background: Heather is a fairly young woman from a farm in Indiana. She had an average life and enjoyed hanging out with people more then animals. In fact, she distanced herself away from people when ever possible always feeling that she didn't quite fit in. She goofed off in her high school years and ended up with a fairly low G.P.A and unable to attend anything but community college. Deciding she didn't want to go to said college, due to her enormous chinchilla ranch, she started searching for an easy way out. Heather's friend relayed tell of Feral Labs which had offered experiments she could join. The woman entered her application to one of the labs only to get drafted to the island. Animal (if your ready to specify that): Chinchilla What your looking to develop here: More of a believable background and a real reason why her application was drafted to the island. The basic concept is good, it's a very human character (one that sadly enough even reminds me of myself). You mention her having a chinchilla ranch (an enormous one in fact) even before going to college but that isn't likely unless her parents actually owned it. Moreau tends to take people who can disappear or have as few ties as possible (cover up stories are such a bother). Perhaps, if she's still young and JUST denied college she wanted to stay on the ranch but her parents wanted her to go to college (even community college). They may have told her go to college or get out. Not feeling ready for college, and not having money to make it on her own she may have applied for the feral labs two week testing and being upset with her parents not told them where she was going (figured she'd worry them for a few weeks then come back with 5000 dollars to make it on her own). Alternatively, she may have been looking for a job on other animal type ranches and might have been told that they needed staffing on an enourmous ranch on it's own island, with very high pay. Either is an option. As far as why she was picked, first off, if when they interviewed her she mentioned the college thing that almost might be reason to take notice. Moreau hates people he considers "lazy" and anyone who denies themselves education to him is lazy. Her connections with her parents farm could have been enough for the serum choice as well. This post does not automatically mean your removed from que, the point of this is to work with you, so any questions you have or any decisions you make you can post and see what is thought as well. Until you feel your ready for the critique department.

Tweek Oh wow! @_@ This is exactly what I need right now! I'd love to nab one of the slots if I could. Name: Lin-Liu Zhen Basic Background: Her history is still under construction, but I was hoping to have her born and raised in Beijing before moving to America. Then, I was thinking of having her graduate from a four-year college and end up in a low level job in the science/medical career, perhaps a lab assistant or nurse or something even lower. I'm still not sure what would be the best way to get her on the island. Animal (if your ready to specify that): Pallas Cat (perhaps non-morphic?) What your looking to develop here: A means of getting onto the island, a personality that effectively balances strengths with weaknesses, and an idea of how much a 'scientific' background would be realistic and meshable with the atmosphere of the island. I also want to make sure she comes off as an actual, well-thought-out reasonable concept as I think people have been sensitized to characters from Japan or China who end up as super powered Mary-Sues for one reason or another. Perhaps they were hired by Feral Labs and that's why they moved to the U.S. She could have felt forced into a scientific career. Feral Labs might have very likely paid for her schooling, and Moreau might have considered her a very possible position on the island (low level assistant type one of course, like Lily, you just need a BS degree). But her family connections would have thrown that off. Of course, perhaps the reason she is on the island is because her father (or mother) got too close to finding the truth out. He may have noticed some of the research notes and concluded they were doing human testing. Nothing extensive since it's almost impossible to put all the clues together, but enough to raise a scene. Being important scientists within Feral Labs and frankly, too smart to loose, they could have all of you moved to the Island. Injecting you (and probably them) to be safe with a chip and turning you into a subject. Promising your safety only if your parents continued to work for them and keeping you apart from them. All things considered, this might explain her dour attitude. Always forced to achieve, forced into a career path that though she might have been good at she might not have wanted. Then to be ripped away from home and trapped here, her parents still working for Feral Labs behind the fence. It's a lot to take on. Feel free to PM back to discuss this of course.

Basic Background: As a teen he made some bad choices in friends and hung with the wrong croud. When he became an adult he had many enemys and one night he came home to find his apartment on fire. He was never sure who had done it but when the cops showed up They took Michael into custody. He suspected that one of his enemys had told them that he did it. Michael lost his family, His daughter and wife..... Michael was framed for the murder of his family. He has an apartment to live in but hates liveing alone now sence he has no family. They all died in a house fire that he got sent to prison for. Though now,Michael is perfectly fine being alone or in a cell. He never beleived that he was the one that started the fire, he thought it was a so called friend of his that went bad, but Michael knew he would never be able to prove it in court.
Prison was also the place where he heard about the island, one of the guards that he had made friends with, told him about an island that would accept him and not turn him in. He said it was like a resort and would give him shelter, but for a small price. The guard was one of the few people he had made friends with. This guard had been working for the prison for a few years and the other guards on duty didn't seem to really trust him sence he had made friends with alot of the convicts. Still this made him alittle nervous that the guard was telling him of this and helping him plan to excape.
To excape from the prison the guard he had made friends with had snuck him a guards uniform and extra pair of keys. To help him excape and get to the island the guard told Michael there was a ship leaveing dock headed twards where the island was, but he was would have to use a life boat to row the rest of the way there.
In the middle of the night while the guards where changeing shifts he unlocked his cell and snuck out wearing a pair of shades and a hat so no one knew that he was a prisoner. Soon he was on his way to the ship the guard had told him about and snuck on and he was on his way to total freedom.

Does the face have to completely animalize? i'm sure this is the wrong place for this question, but i think it kind of relates. I was going to my charcter as a more animalistic merfolk. But he would still have a human pair of eyes, and a mostly normal nose, eveything else alters though. But compeletly scaled Is this acceptable?
