Quote:
The old saying had always felt like a promise.

“April showers bring May flowers.”

But this year, April arrived brittle and quiet. The earth, usually soft with rain, lay cracked beneath your feet. Each step stirred dust instead of mud. The sky stretched above in a pale and endless blue, empty and unmoving. It was increasingly unsettling.

You stand at the edge of a field that should be greening by now. Instead, it’s a patchwork of dull browns and faded yellows. The wind carries no scent of rain, only the faint, dry whisper of grass rubbing against itself. Somewhere in the distance, a thin column of smoke curls upward, just enough to tighten something in your chest.

They’ve been warning about fires again.

It reminds some of stories, years ago, when flames swept across the land faster than anyone expected, devouring fields, homes, entire horizons. You remember those stories too. Or maybe you remember more than stories.

Still, not everyone believes it will happen again.

Optional additional info: Your companion (or perhaps a stranger you meet along the way) watches the same sky but sees something different. Maybe they insist the rains are just late, that the clouds will gather any day now, heavy and gray, ready to break. Maybe they point to the wind shifting, or the faintest hint of humidity in the air, clinging to hope like it’s something tangible. Or maybe they’re the one who fears the worst and you’re the one trying to believe. :end optional info

As the days pass without rain, tension builds. The land feels like it’s holding its breath. Every spark, whether from lightning or carelessness, feels like a threat waiting to happen.

Will you prepare for fire, expecting history to repeat itself?

Or will you hold onto the belief that the rains will come, that the land hasn’t forgotten how to heal?

Prompt:
Write from the perspective of a character living through this unseasonably dry April. Describe the current weather and explore your character’s internal thoughts. Are they haunted by memories (or stories) of past fires, or do they remain hopeful that rain will arrive in time?

The sky hasn’t changed yet.

But something is coming, one way or another.

' April showers bring May flowers ' - Or so that is how the saying went. And normally such a saying would hold true. Nature would shower down glorious rains in April into May where gorgeous flowers would blossom and bloom.

And yet, April has approached - And it was quiet. Brittle. Talks of fires once more. Even the wind held no scent of the promised rains that would help it all grow. Dull browns, faded yellows, dry grasses and dry dirt. Dust and wind - Nature was in danger.

Nature was in danger.
Such a dire feeling made Zahra's heart sink down to her stomach.

"Where are you? Where are you?" Zahra turned her attention up to the skies. For once the calm and Serene mare felt a panic settle in her heart - A panic that she felt she shared with the very nature around her.

But there was no answer. There was no reply. The rain would surely fall soon though, right? It had to. Winter had melted away and now there should be rains. Flowers. Mud. Nature should be waking up not facing dangers of burning. No, no, no... No.

Pacing now, the mare's little companions all stood nearby and watched with worry. It was not often they saw her this way. A serene, calming presence now in a tizzy. A fret. How could they help their beloved companion? Their best friend? It pained their hearts to watch this scene before them.

Melina almost spoke up, but found herself remaining silent instead.

That was until Zahra began to tear up all while pacing back and forth on the dried earth beneath her. the panic, the worry - It was all getting to her and that was something Melina could not stand to see her friend go through. "Zahra, dear -"

"Melina." A pause in her pacing, head snapping to the side to look at the little familiar with those tear-filled eyes.

Now another silence fell between them. Even Little Darlings ears laid back now as Zahra's tone felt cold. such a tone was out of character for the mare. But such a one was caused by her worry and fret. The pain and panic in her heart over this heart-wrenching feeling over nature's plight.

"I want to fix this." She said next, despite knowing such a feat would be impossible.

No control over the rain. The weather. The sun. Nor fire. Nor snow. Nor --

"Darling. . . You know you can't." A quiet yet harsh truth that Melina did not wish to speak, but felt she had to do so.

Silence once more. Zahra's bottom lip trembles and she gives a nod. Quietly, in a defeated tone she replies: "I know."

How many more moments of silence will they have? How many more pauses will happen between them? Why were words on comfort and encouragement hard to find in this moment? How could one even help a nature attuned pony feel better about such a dire situation that nature itself seemed to be in? What if all this panic ended up being for not? Surely the rain would come and the chance of fires would dwindle once more - Right? Nature had miracles left and right, did it not?

"I'm sorry I had to say that."

"It's fine." A sniffle from the mare. "No, it's not fine, but it is f-fine, you know? I know... You know..." Carefully she began to comb her claws through the rough dirt beneath her.

"Nature is hurting. And so am I. Nature is in danger, and I feel I am as well. I love nature. I love it so, so, much... Spring - Spring needs to bloom and blossom to it's fullest for the summer. Then fall so winter can tuck it in for a nice little nap. Summer shouldn't burn it, then blanket it in snow. That's not how the cycles are meant to work." A shaky mumbling of her musings.

"I wish I could make it rain. Make it pour. Make it all thrive once again as it should. This hurts... It hurts my heart. It hurts my soul. It hurts everything in me."

"If I may.... Approach, ma'am." A quiet voice comes from the left as Kinai steps into view. His own paws gently feel the barren dirt beneath him as he approaches, then takes a seat a bit away from her.

"I do not think I am as in tune with the nature around me as you are. Goodness, no. You seem born to be one with it. Though I must say I feel that panic." A wave of his leafy tail. "Fire and I do not mix well, as you can more than likely assume. My mate would also hate to see me burn I am sure - Ah. What I am meaning to say here is - I do believe we feel the same to an extent."

Zahra gives the other pony a look over as that leafy tail wiggles and waves, taking in how leafy and cute he looked. Such a tiny nature-y looking fella he was ! "I am - Sorry, you feel the same. It must hurt your heart too, huh? To see nature in such a state. It hurts me. It hurts me so, so, very much."

As she spoke, her little deer actually approached the newcomer! Quite easily too. The sight brought a small smile to the mares face. Perhaps it was he allure of how leafy and nature-like the little Usdia looked that allowed the usually shy and cautious creature to approach with such ease. Melina gave a relaxed little sigh once she took note of Zahra's newfound smile no matter how small such a smile was.

"It does, yes. The winter was harsh as is and to see that spring may be threatened brings a heaviness to my heart. I do so wonder what it means for the upcoming fall of this year too as fall is my favored time of year." Kinai spoke, giving a wave of his leafy tail as if that was a silent little explanation as to why fall was his favored time of year. Such a movement got the attention of the little deer who then approached ever closer to Kinai.

It was then that Kinai looked to the little one while outstretching a paw to offer it. Carefully so, Little Darling gave a few curious sniffs before giving an elated little noise and a hop! Then nuzzled the paw that had been offered.

"My my, Little Darling likes you, it would seem. Which is a good thing - More often than not the precious little one tends to be oh so shy. When she had first approached, I assumed it must have to do with that leafy allure you hold. We all three tend to be drawn to nature itself and what have you. Melina, Little Darling and I."

Kinai gave a chuckle and gently pet the elated little deer. "I would not be surprised if that is why this little cutie has decided to approach. Can't say I'll complain about such an honor though~"

The small little group sat and talked for hours upon hours about nature - Their favorite aspects, what is to come, what they hope will be coming soon and so on and so forth.

By the time the sun had began to set, Zahra felt herself become more relaxed and at ease - Although that nagging worry over all of this still lingered on in her nature-loving heart.

Hopefully the fires that was spoke of would not rage.
