It's a new year in the Kawani lands! Winter is in full swing and much of the land is covered in snow. Does your soquili do anything to acknowledge or celebrate the new year? Are they part of a herd or family that has a tradition or ceremony? Have they made a promise to start the new year with a clean slate and change themselves for the better?

Or did they simply try to stay warm and wait for the snow to melt and spring to arrive?

Write an RP responding to the above prompt. Your soquili should acknowledge the fact that it is a New Year - how they react to that is up to you.

The forest framed a blanket of snow. Lantern light flickered between the trunks, warm gold against moon-blue shadows, as Irithiel Goldenleaf stood at the heart of the clearing. Her coat mirrored the quiet woods—soft browns and creams. Around her moved members of her herd, the sure-hooved forest guides, The Goldenleaf Herd.

Tonight, the forest opened itself to more than those who would travel quickly through the dark. "Welcome." said Irithiel Goldenleaf. Her voice low and quiet, yet it carried through the frozen glade. “You walk under our boughs as guests, not strangers. Tonight, you may leave a wish with the sky.” Many were here at the point where their paths converged, from mountains, the shore, and even a distant land. Breath frosted in the air, and hooves crunched in the snow as they shifted and stood. Coming together for the ceremony, to cast a golden-hued wish up into the night sky.

Lanterns were passed around. Delicate paper as thin as leaves, stretched over frail branch frames stronger than they appeared. At the center, a basket of oil waits to be lit. Once lit, they would fly up into the sky. Their flames would burn briefly, intentionally so, guttering out before they fell back to the earth. But not before sending a wish into the heavens for the one who set it free.

Irithiel dips her horn slightly. "Take your time, and bring your wish to your mind." she said softly. "Your wish need not be grand, just true to you." she said as she cast her eyes at her mate and smiled.

Londyn Kemuri lingered at the edge of the clearing at first. His cloak was plain, his posture careful, practiced in the art of being unnoticed. Wisps of vanilla colored hair escaped from under the hood, dissipating into the air around him. The faint smell of steeped tea wafted around him, carrying warmth in the air, despite the cold winter air. His eyes reflected the lantern's light, without any of the warmth in them. He stood amongst the crowd, as he always did. Amidst laughter, festival attendants of the Faire, crowds that thought him one of their own, as this crowd did as well. Yet he still felt alone.

This loneliness is sharp, heightened here amongst these strangers. A quiet unsettling feeling that blanketed him like the snow below his hoof.

I shouldn't have come here. he thought to himself. Yet he did not leave.

A prince with no kingdom and nowhere to return to. A survivor with no witnesses. A soul hiding behind borrowed cheer at the Ren Faire he worked with.

He accepted a lantern when one of the forest herd offered it, nodding thanks but not trusting his voice. The lantern felt fragile in his grasp. So many things had been fragile once.

Ayelet Hashachar stood nearby. Sunset hues peeked out from her blanket, with eyes that brought the sun with her wherever she went. Beside her is her daughter, Sazanami. Her posture already turned away from Ayelet, ready to take off into the world on her own. Ayelet sighed softly, and reached up to kiss her brow.

“You don’t have to wish out loud,” she murmured, as if Sazanami still needed her instruction. Sazanami made a remark about how she knew what to do.

Ayelet closed her eyes.

Iritihiel explained how the lanterns would know when they were released, and the flames would glow brighter.

Ayelet had her wish. She closed her eyes. Health, happiness, and a life that is not hard. she thought as she picked up the lantern and nosed it into the air. She gasped softly as the flame brightened and carried the lantern up, up into the sky.

Londyn had watched the interaction between the two mares. Something in him knew they were mother and daughter. It brought painful memories to his heart.

Ayelet turned and saw him watching, still with his lantern at his hoof. He called to her without saying a word. As a mother, she could feel the darkness around his heart. Slowly, she walked over to him, not wanting to startle the stranger.

"You do not have to know your wish, word for word." she whispered softly, where only he could hear. "Intent, and your heart, can be wish enough." she smiled at him.

Londyn had watched her come over to him. With her words, he actually looked at her, truly saw her. Her warmth radiated to him and caused something in his chest to crack. He breath hitched. This stranger had so much love, it broke his loneliness wide open and left him raw.

"..Thank you." his voice came out with emotion he held back.

Ayelet wanted to embrace him, and tell him it would all be okay. But she returned to her daughter. She watched as Sazanami released her lantern. Ayelet knew she wouldn't share her wish with her mother. She hoped it came true for her, even still. Sazanami was quieter than usual and watched the lanterns next to her mom. Neither cried, but they stood close enough to feel the warmth of the other.

More lanterns sparked to life and rose up into the sky. They filled the air above the forest, like fireflies dancing across the night. Higher and higher they rose, giving flight to the wishes of those below.

Londyn held his lantern till almost the last. He thought of his parents. Of blood on a throne. A crown lost, and a life he could never get back. Then, finally, his wish surfaced. Let me belong again. he thought, in his body and soul. He raised the lantern up, releasing it. It blazed brighter than the rest and did not falter as it floated up.

The New Year embraced the wishes of all those below.
