Winter Unicorn

Quote:
Biting Chill ( 18 ) : The cold is strangely harsh, and even the still wind is vicious enough to sting. But the cold isn't the worst part of tonight--it's what comes with it. Out of a swirl of blowing snow, a massive, wispy wolf takes shape, enormous and snarling, with fur spiked like jagged icicles. Its eyes glow with a cold, wild intelligence, and before you can even react, it lunges as though you’ve trespassed deep into its territory. Every strike it makes feels like the bite of winter itself. Wherever its claws slash, wherever its jaws snap, frost cakes over. Even if you're lucky enough not to take massive damage, the cold seeps bone deep. When you manage to land a hit, the creature bleeds a strange, clear blood--icy water that freezes instantly into slush on the ground. The more damage it takes, the more its form flickers, shredded like wind-torn snow. The wolf fights with the relentless instinct of a dire beast, but it is not invulnerable. It will never run. It will fight until its body is broken and flickering, then--finally--a sudden gust will rip through the air and carry its dissolving body away. Howls echo on the wind. The rest of its pack probably isn't too far behind.

It was here again. That terrifying wolf creature made of wind. And Trier was alone. The last time she had faced this there had at least been another Page with her, and even though they were both…rather useless, it had felt safer. Right now? She was honestly afraid.

Her arm was numb and painful from where it had managed to graze her with one of the fangs that the beast had, and she was running as quickly as she could but.

Lord she was no runner.

The pain in her arm and the bite of the cold air coming into her lungs was causing her to be even slower than normal–and then?

Salvation. The feeling of a Squire nearby. Thank goodness.

Turning in the direction of the soon to be help, she put on as much speed as she could, and when the…very colorful candy colored male came into view she felt another wave of relief. “It’s a wolf? A winter wolf? I hope you have magic…I don’t.” The words were as loud as she could make them, and came out almost staccato. Trier was so out of breath right now.

Dunnottar enjoyed running about in the winter time. The cold cleared his head, invigorated him. He thrived on this weather.

Of course, even he could concede when it got too cold. He found that a fairly rare phenomenon, but still.

Tonight seemed to be one of those nights, a bitter cold nipping at the heels of the Page that was running up to him, saying something about an ice wolf. Well. That wasn't entirely great, but he could handle that.

Probably.

"I do," he said, immediately firming his stance in the snow, shifting his weight to the balls of his feet and lifting his cane. "Behind me, now. My magic won't target you, but I need to be near the wolf for it to work."

He watched as the wall of ice and wind approached with almost frightening speed. The form of a massive white wolf became clear to him the closer it got, charging at him like an oncoming train. He waited, breath held, for the right moment, until the clean, icy breath of the wolf was in his face, the teeth only just out of range of his body.

With a loud shout, he slammed the butt of his cane into the ground, calling upon his magic. The unicorns burst forth, running around him and then charging the singular enemy they had. The sudden surge of unicorn horns piercing the wolf's hide had it backpedaling, yowling its pain as it began to bleed slush.

Dunnottar stomps his cane on the ground. A swirl of silvery glitter appears and a small swarm of unicorns about a foot tall rise from it, rushing out in every direction to charge people with their horns. People Dunnottar trusts will not be targeted, and those who are will feel the sensation of being slashed or stabbed by the unicorn horns. Lasting damage is up to player discretion. This attack can be channeled for 30 seconds and the unicorns will lose their form, returning to glitter upon reaching 8 feet from Dunnottar.

Oh, thank goodness. Someone who had magic, knew how to use it and was able to take charge of the situation. And the magic…were those little…unicorns? That…was. Cute? Strange. But cute. Not really her type of thing but…that was fine.

“That’s right, wolf. Leave us alone. You’ve done enough damage here.”

Why wasn’t she carrying a lighter or something. That would be…smart. Making a flamethrower would be excellent against this winter demon…but. Not today. Maybe she could talk to Necro about that when they met next.

Her voice was intimidating enough, she supposed, and when she scooped up a rock from the ground, she managed to hit the wolf right where one of the unicorns had slashed, pulling back and giving a small, satisfied smile.

Dunnottar had enough self restraint to not roll his eyes at the words the Page with him spoke, but it was a near thing. Some people's strange insistence on speaking words to beasts that could most certainly not understand them just was not compatible with the way he preferred to get his fighting done. At least the Page here had enough of a brain to stay safe behind him, to listen to the experienced fighter. He had had some fights where someone wanted to be the hero and got themselves hurt for the trouble, as well as making the fight unnecessarily complex for the people trying to enact a plan.

The rock was a nice touch, at least. He smirked as it hit dead on where one of the unicorns's horns had slashed it open. Good. Very good.

Lifting his cane again, he brought it down hard on the wolf's head as it stumbled back from the unexpected pain its prey had wrought. The head caved in, and it dissolved into snow, slush, and ice, scattering into the winds.

Breathing a bit heavily, he twirled his cane again as he shifted to plop it back down into the snow and lean on it.

"Well, that was adventurous," he remarked, not turning to face the Page, though not out of disrespect—he just needed a little bit of time to recover before he moved again. The aftermath of a fight, the adrenaline rush slowly exiting his body, required him to hold still for a little while, lest he get dizzy.

“It’s not the first time I’ve dealt with it, sadly. It’s. Vicious.” While the Squire’s back was to her, Trier raised her sleeve to examine her injured arm. It was bleeding, though not as badly as she thought it might be. The cold numbness had worn off and it just felt…painful now. And honestly, she wasn’t sure if that was better or worse.

“I’m glad that you. Had such useful magic. I’m very pleased to have run into you. I’m Trier. Page of Saturn. I’ve…never seen colors quite so bright as yours. And were those…small unicorns? They were vicious in and of themselves. It was almost fun to watch.”

It was fun to watch. Only in Destiny City could you watch a pack of small unicorns eviscerate a winter demon. Lord. If Sabrina of six months ago could know what Sabrina of now was getting up to, she would have said that she needed to get professional help. Honestly, that was still something that she toyed with but…this was real. This was her life now and that was all there was to it. “Thank you for just. Trusting that I wasn’t insane.”

"I've been helping to handle odd things for a year or two now," Dunnottar replied. "I'm just as magical as you are. Maybe if I was a civilian jumping in, you'd be right to assume I thought you were insane at first."

He snorted. "But you saw the unicorns. Yes. My Knight magic comes from a Wonder called Dunnottar on planet Lysithea. That world's magic is all about unicorns. It's not my favorite thing, it's very... girlish, but I'm pretty happy with offensive unicorns. Nice to meet you, Trier."

Trier was used to people enjoying to talk. Enjoying to get to know her, to ask questions but.

This was…absolutely not that. “Well, thank you again, and have a good day, Dunnottar.” She filed the name and the information away for later and with a small, rather curt nod, turned and walked away. Her arm needed to be bandaged and that was as good of an excuse to leave as any other.

Damn that freakish winter demon.
