the gameboard

Honestly, Sappho wasn't sure she liked being a Senshi anymore. It had all been fun, once, and she'd enjoyed parts of it, but the luster had come off pretty badly and she found ti hard to power up.

Yeah, she'd showed up for the big fight against the monster that tried to eat the planet, that was a ******** given. She kept all her stuff here, and whatever. But she hadn't bothered to going to Remarque's little afterparty, even with the potential promise of catered food and all that entailed. She just...didn't want to do this.

Everything had gotten so messy and unpleasant. But she was trying to make herself try, and also, it was a long way home, and maybe she wanted to sit in her realm and crack the pretty crystal she'd found and make some more pretty flowers. It looked kinda nice already, a garden that she supposed it would be nice to do more with, Maybe find something to make a water feature, or something.

So she'd powered up with the intent of finding a mirror she could slip through, so she could go to Mirrorspace and start hanging out in her Realm, but...she'd gotten waylaid.

By a die lying on the ground.

And now she was in a strange, magical place that definitely wasn't Mirrorspace.

She didn't want to be here. She wanted to go home.

And there seemed to be only one way to do it.

Space 4: Something smells rotten. You can’t see very far into the darkness, but if you squint closely a dark form seems to be dragging itself along the ground. Sometimes you see a pale hand almost close enough to grab you–or, maybe something does grab you. It’s cold, and frightening, and it’s trying to drag you out of bounds.

The very first thing she ran into was straight out of a horror movie. Darkness, and something...moving. Shambling. And an awful smell of decay. Sappho clapped both hands to her face to muffle a scream, dropping the die on the way in a manner that apparently counted as rolling, and chased after it, squeezing her eyes shut and hoping she got out.

A cold hand curled around her ankle.

Sappho screamed, struggling and kicking to get it to let her go--and when it finally did, she ran as hard as she could for the next space.

Space 6: You hear a shrill, humming noise; it sounds almost like something is firing past you–and sometimes, you even feel a sharp burst of air, like something has just missed you. Maybe, even, it does get a slice out of you. Sharp, bladelike threads seem to string up around you; you’d best be careful not to get cut on any of them between now and your next dice roll.

The first thing Sappho thought, when she realized that the whistling she'd heard was razor wire, was 'what in the Saw XVI.' Did she actually think there were that many Saw movies? No, but they did seem to increase at a rapid pace, and thinking about this as a Jigsaw trap made her feel a little less terrified, somehow. Maybe because fictionalizing it made it seem less immediate, like she wasn't actually picking her way through razor wire and trying to avoid getting cut as she made her way across the space.

It didn't actually eliminate that reality, of course. But it did keep her form panicking, which was a major positive as she very, very delicately chose her steps, eventually making it across and throwing the dice.

Whatever was next, at least it wasn't that. Hopefully the gameboard didn't like reruns, and she wouldn't see any more razor wire on her trip.

Maybe a vain hope. Maybe the gameboard loved remakes. But she could hope.

Space 10: A swampy smell fills the air. You take a step, and you seem to sink into it. Mud creeps over your feet, and you sink rapidly. Ankle deep, knee deep. Whether or not you squirm and fight against it, you are sinking. The mud is crushing and painful, and if you sink too deep it steals the breath from your lungs. There’s nothing to grab onto; you have to roll your dice quickly before that too gets sucked into the muddy quicksand.

Once upon a time, Sappho had confidently filed quicksand away as something that was a big threat in movies and cartoons, but not something she would ever encounter in real life.

The gameboard seemed to want to make a joke of her, because she got away from razor wire and to her next destination only to find herself sinking.

Could she remember anything she'd seen in any movie ever? No. well, okay, she could remember Westley bravely diving after Buttercup, but she did not have a Westley, and so all she could do was take a deep breath, and roll her dice.

That, at least, she could be sure would get her out, whatever techniques fiction had or had not taught her over the years.

Space 16: As you step into your square, something cracks. At first, you can’t tell what it is, but as your full weight moves onto the square, the ground shifts beneath you. It’s cold, and it’s ice, and a hole falls underneath you, plunging you into frigid waters. There’s enough floating ice that you should still be able to roll the dice to get out of here, but you have to go quickly–you’re soaked, in chilly water, and something just swam by your feet.

Falling was the theme of the evening, Sappho supposed, because once again she took a few steps forward and found the ground disappearing from under her.

This time, it was ice shattering and dropping her into freezing water, and she had to struggle not to panic. Quicksand might be fake, but drowning and hypothermia were both very real, especially in her very cute, very light fuku.

She scrambled for the surface, breaching it and panting heavily as she grasped onto a piece of ice like Jack clinging to that door. She shivered, and rolled, and hoped that she managed to get herself the hell out of here soon.

Space 20: The end; once you have arrived here you are free to leave. You will see be basked in the glow of a beautiful, opalescent aura that will take you back home. If you arrived with a guest, you can leave without them or choose to stay until they make it to the end as well. When you arrive back in Destiny City, you may choose to keep the six sided die–if nothing else, it’s pretty! Though, it doesn’t seem to have any magical qualities, that might be for the best.

Something was looking out for her. That was the only explanation Sappho could think of, when she stumbled through her fourth space and into a warm light that promised freedom and home.

The dice, the board, Mirrorspace somehow, the ghost of the original Sappho of Lesbos--something. Sappho didn't think she cared what, exactly, as long as she got out.

And she did, finding herself back in Destiny City.

...Time in her little realm in Mirrorspace sounded even better, now.
