the gameboard

Persephone sighed. It was just her luck, really, to try to get home a little quicker from her job by powering up and mirrorwalking and to come across some absolute bullshit in the process. She'd mapped out a couple of mirrors that wereclose enough to home to make the remainder of the trip easy and far enough to not draw too much attention, and liked to vary between them night to night.

Tonight, she came out one in an alleyway a few blocks from home, and immediately spotted the funny little die on the ground. It drew her attention, so out of place was it--and she picked it up to turn it over, which, she realized very quickly, was a super dumb idea. Especially when she found herself in a dark space with only one way forward.

"Really?" She asked the universe, as if there was anything that was going to answer. "Evil games? That's the play? Ugh, fine, I'll go with it."

How ridiculous. And also very annoying.

But she had magic dice and squares ahead of her. The solution seemed obvious. Just...roll.

Space 5: A dog barks, fierce and frightening. You can hear its growl and the hackles stand up on the back of your neck. You can practically feel spittle on you. It’s close. And it’s big. And it’s angry. If this beastly dog could reach you, no doubt it would try to tear you to shreds.

Generally, Persephone wasn't scared of dogs. She rather liked them, actually. This dog, though? The one she could hear behind her, whose hot snarls she could feel on her neck? Yeah, alright, she was a little afraid of that dog.

"Ah," she said, because although her limbs were briefly frozen, her mouth was not, "that kind of game. I see."

At least there weren't currently teeth sinking into any soft bits. She wasn't in immediate physical danger. Though she had a feeling that might change if she stood around too long--and she did not want to test the game's patience. Presuming it had the intelligence to have patience to test.

Not the point. She got on with getting ahead.

Space 8: Something slithers across your foot, so fast that you might have thought you imagined it. Except, a few seconds later, it happens again. And then, again. Snakes keep moving across your space. If you move, they see you–and they might bite. Some of them hiss, some are capable of spraying a poisonous liquid that can cause itchiness or burning.

Apparently, this place liked animal-based scares, because first it was big, slavering dogs, and now it was a snake slithering over her foot.

Again, an animal Persephone normally had neutral-to-positive feelings about. Perfectly ordinary creatures that couldn't maliciously mean harm because they were just animals, doing animal things. But these weren't ordinary animals, were they? And Persephone had no way of knowing if these snakes were harmless and friendly or if they were on par with black mambas or some other nonsense like that.

She took a tense, quick breath, and began to tiptoe her way across. She would just have to be very careful until she got past them to safety.

Space 14: The ground is sticky. You land on this and immediately dip, as though you’ve stepped on a trampoline. Close inspection reveals that you are standing on an intricately woven web–and your shoes are stuck. And something is skittering just on the horizon.

Spiders. Finally the board had hit on something Persephone was afraid of without additional context. Totally irrational Spiders were just chilling, killing other insects! Most of them weren't dangerous to humans outside of Australia! All of those were very reasonable and true facts, and Persephone really had tried to convince herself of those things.

But, one: some fears weren't natural.

Two: by thew sound of movement and the way the webbing she was stuck to dipped, the spider here was probably a lot bigger than average, and probably a lot hungrier, too. and given that Persephone had no desire to be Shelob's next meal, all she could do was struggle until her feet came free enough for her to stagger towards the edge of the square and away from whatever was coming for her in the dark.

Space 19: You’re so close! Almost at the end! But the space you’re standing on shifts and shakes and seems to crumble beneath you. You have to hold on; there’s nowhere to fall but down into the deep abyss. If you manage to hang on for long enough, you find some invisible purchase and can pull yourself back up, but it’s quite the ordeal. Make sure you don’t get cut on falling spaces! The ground restores itself once you roll again.

Persephone was sure she could see the end of the board from the space she fled the spider's web onto. It was right there, a soft light that called to her--a way out and a way back home to the kids, only a little later than planned and with a crazy story to tell. She could almost reach it.

Except that the ground underneath her gave way, and she dropped with a scream.

She just managed to grab the edge of the crumbling space, and squeezed her eyes shut, clinging to it desperately.

"Please, no, not here, not after all this time," she said, softly, mostly to herself. This would be an undignified way to go, and she hated even the possibility of it.

But she flailed a little, and managed to get a decent grip--enough to haul herself partway up and roll her die.

And then she was on solid ground again, and freedom was just in front of her.

Space 20: The end; once you have arrived here you are free to leave. You will see be basked in the glow of a beautiful, opalescent aura that will take you back home. If you arrived with a guest, you can leave without them or choose to stay until they make it to the end as well. When you arrive back in Destiny City, you may choose to keep the six sided die–if nothing else, it’s pretty! Though, it doesn’t seem to have any magical qualities, that might be for the best.

Persephone didn't linger, when she stumbled into that warm light. She let it whisk her right back to Destiny City, glad that she hadn't gotten more than a little shaken up by whatever weird magic she'd run into.

The die went into her pocket, though. That was a trophy, now--a sign of her victory over whatever she'd found in there. That much, she figured she was owed.
