the gameboard

Halloween was a favorite time of year for Lucette regardless, but being Industria had only increased her enthusiasm for it. And, also, having a very nice man to spend her magical evenings with.

Well, alright. Others might disagree with her calling Cryptomelane nice. But he was good to her, and as far as she was concerned, that was far more important than anything silly or nebulous like "morals" or "murder being wrong."

He made her happy, and wasn't that what mattered?

On this particular lovely fall evening, she found herself compelled to wind her fingers with his as they wandered through a park alight with autumn color. Perhaps demonstrating her affection so openly while powered wasn't a perfectly ideal plan, but honestly, between the two of them, it was difficult to imagine there being any kind of issue. And, besides, they seemed to be alone.

Frankly, she was considering finding a bench to sit together and make out, if Cryptomelane was inevitable, and so her eyes scanned the side of the path, and while they found a bench, they also found something...interesting.

Dice. By its feet. She squeezed Cryptomelane's hand, and nodded to them.

"How odd. A matched set, abandoned out here. Did someone lose them, do you think?"

Affection……wasn’t something that Cryptomelane entirely understood, or knew what to do with. Growing up, he hadn’t had very much of it in his life. All too many shows of something that might have passed for it had earned Brother Horace’s disapproval for both Preston and whomever among the flock had dared to bestow on him those little kindnesses. Any time when Brother Horace himself had met Preston with gentleness, it had swiftly been followed with pain, such that he learned to never trust it when his so-called brother offered him praise, or respite, or the slightest bits of grace.

Opening up to more affection from someone else had, thus, proven challenging. Thankfully, Lucette had understood, and allowed Preston time and grace. And now, it felt quite simple to walk with her out here, in the chill of a fine Halloween Season night, hand in hand as Industria and Cryptomelane. If not for the fact that so many nosy busybodies in this city would certainly have judged them worthy of violent retribution for simply existing and having the powered auras that they had, this might have been an evening utterly free of any threat. (Alas, the Order senshi and Knights of Destiny City made such threats inevitable, which was why Cryptomelane had asked Ympe to follow him and Industria at a bit of a distance, keeping an eye out for any potential troublemakers.)

Following Lucette’s gaze, Cryptomelane looked toward the same bench, then down at the dice she’d spotted.…… Strange little things, he thought, and that compelled him to, first, disentangle his hand from Industria’s (lingering briefly to raise their hands so that he could kiss the back of hers). Then, he took a knee in the grass beside the bench.

“I don’t know, my dear,” he said, adjusting his glasses and squinting at the dice. “They look too precious for someone to treat them so carelessly.…”

Not that it was easy to make out all the details, but between the relatively full moon and the decently lit path in the park, Cryptomelane could make out too many details that spoke to an expensive and delicate creation. Dimly, he thought that they could be in danger, but Industria’s was the only other powered aura that he could feel nearby. No interloping Order senshi or Knights……or youma, for that matter. If any of those filthy Order rats had thought to harm him—if some wretched princess had thought to dust him permanently—then Hell would know no fury such as that which Cryptomelane would unleash.

Yet, despite the tension rising in Cryptomelane’s chest, the dice held him, fixated: “Gilded numbering—could be cheap, but it doesn’t look like it.… The wood would take time, skill, and craftsmanship to stain like this, nevermind the delicate inlay of……is that gemstone?”

Cryptomelane wanted to pick one of them up for a better look. Whatever that was woven throughout the wood, it couldn’t have been natural, and the effort that went into it merited appreciation. The longer he stared at them, the more he wanted to pick one up. It had to be the best way to really judge the craftsmanship, no? Anyway, it couldn’t be more dangerous than handling a starseed in front of an Order freak, and so Cryptomelane reached out to take one.……

Darkness fell. A gale-force wind slammed into his chest. But it had nothing on the force with which the next thing collided with Cryptomelane: a gamboling mess of blue skin and big eyes, delightedly shrieking, “MELLY!!!”

Cryptomelane sighed, warm relief hitting him as he caught Ympe against his chest. “There you are,” he said as Ympe hugged him, skinny arms looping behind Cryptomelane’s neck. “I couldn’t feel your aura. I thought some Order senshi had hurt you.”

“Nah, Ympe’s ‘kay,” the little youma said, nuzzling at Cryptomelane’s neck. “Picked up this little sparkly thing by a bush? Then—WHOOSH! Ympe ends up here.” Lifting his head, he peered around them at the darkness. “Where’s Tria? She’s ‘kay too, right?”

It may have taken time, but Industria felt, thoroughly, that her patience and care had been rewarded--Cryptomelane was a gentleman in ways that she was sure others might not expect, and when he did something classically romantic like kissing the back of her hand before letting go, it was always a bit of a struggle not to giggle like an excited schoolgirl.

This time, she let herself have a giddy smile, since his attention had turned to the dice she'd spotted, so he wouldn't see her looking so foolishly adoring over such a small gesture. She didn't want to overwhelm him; never once had he made her feel like Too Much, but under the surface, the fear always lurked.

And, anyway, the dice were very interesting. Industria bent a little closer, making a thoughtful little "hm" as she took in the details.

"Ones like these...unless they're quite good imitations, they're usually quite expensive. Unlikely to simply be discarded." And they really were so...lovely...

She had a moment, as she reached to pick up her own die, to register that Cryptomelane had vanished from next to her. But by then it was too late; her fingers were already curling around the object, and she was straightening up and staggering in the dark.

"Darling?" She called, as she spun around, looking--and there he was, and Ympe with them. She let out a sight of relief and moved closer, die still clutched in her hand. "I'm so glad you're both alright. And that I'm not alone here. what an odd place; do you think..." She oped her hand, looking down at the intricate little die. "Do you think we need these? To escape?"

Space 3: A strange fog rolls in once you land here. You lose sight of nearly everything, including the game board. If you want to roll, you’re going to have to get close to the ground to even see where you’re supposed to go next. Hopefully nothing sneaks up behind you.

Space 6: You hear a shrill, humming noise; it sounds almost like something is firing past you–and sometimes, you even feel a sharp burst of air, like something has just missed you. Maybe, even, it does get a slice out of you. Sharp, bladelike threads seem to string up around you; you’d best be careful not to get cut on any of them between now and your next dice roll.

As much as he disliked the thought of Industria being stuck here with himself and Ympe, it didn’t surprise Cryptomelane when she joined them. It seemed an unfortunate situation all around, but Cryptomelane met Industria with a smile anyway. Small, close-mouthed, and somewhat weary, but earnest—and more than most other people ever got to see from him, as either Preston or as Cryptomelane.

Aside from Industria and Ympe, Jupiter Butterfly got to see Preston smile most often. And he could in theory imagine himself smiling around Dr. Sturm, but there had rarely been much occasion to do so. First, for reasons shaped very much like Dr. Gatti. Then, because of the mess she’d left when she’d divorced him, and the fact that Preston’s research was so rarely pleasant to discuss (the sheer number of content warnings he’d gotten in the habit of putting in his draft emails spoke for themselves, really).

In the meantime, Ympe beamed at Industria as well, making some of his happy cackling sounds. He disentangled himself from Cryptomelane then, going over to Industria to fuss at her (largely without any point or direction) and to make sure that Tria was also alright. As they did, Cryptomelane stared out at the path ahead of them—because there did, at least, seem to be a path. Darkness everywhere, but glowing steps that looked like a boardgame, all leading toward an exit point.…… Oh, even by Destiny City standards, this felt quite silly.

“I believe the point may be rolling the dice and moving ahead to the end,” he said, then hmmm’d. This was, in fairness, a guess with little evidence behind it. In the name of testing things, Cryptomelane extended an arm, tried to reach into the space ahead of them……and found his hand pressing into some invisible wall. “That barrier does seem to suggest similarly. We need to meet some conditions to get around it, and the dice are the most obvious method.… Ympe, come and roll with me.”

So summoned, Ympe scuttled back over to his Melly’s side, and they rolled together.

Unfortunate that their dice came up with different numbers.

Cryptomelane sighed and pushed himself to his feet. Something felt as though it was urging him on, now that they’d rolled, no matter how much he wanted to help Industria to her feet.

“Whatever spaces we land in, dearest,” he told her, “we are in this together. I won’t leave without either of you. Ympe?” He glanced down at his youma companion, who grinned back up at him. “Come on.”

Advancing three spaces with Ympe was easy enough.

Significantly harder: crossing into the fourth space, watching as the fog rolled in around Ympe. Gnashing his teeth at nothing in Disapproval, Ympe ignored Cryptomelane’s “No, Ympe, wait!” and attempted to run forward and join His Person. He crashed face-first into the invisible wall.

Even knowing that he needed to move, Cryptomelane crouched down by his little friend. “We wound up in different spaces, Ympe,” he said, gently. “But Ympe is clever, and Ympe is brave. Keep rolling the die. You will make it to the end safely. And when we get out of here together, Melly has starseeds to share. Do you understand?”

Whether or not any words besides starseeds permeated Ympe’s mind quite that well, it didn’t matter. He beamed up at Cryptomelane and nodded. “Ympe will see Melly at the end! Gonna be brave! Like Melly said!”

“Good,” Cryptomelane said, the last thing he managed to get out before the gameboard pushed him along to his own designated square.

As soon as he entered it, he very much wanted to leave now. Air rushed in tight bursts around him, and everywhere he turned, Cryptomelane found himself staring at razor-thin wires. Maneuvering out of here would prove challenging. And he could scarcely wait until his next turn.

Industria took a moment to take a deep breath. This was...well, it was a bit nerve-wracking, but for the most part, she felt confident. she wasn't alone, and she wasn't going to be alone. Cryptomelane and Ympe were here, and that was assurance enough for her.

"And we'll all look out for each other," she promised, as she rolled her own die and made her way down the path. She paused for only a moment to gently pat Ympe on the shoulder, a small gesture of affection and encouragement.

"You'll be alright," she promised the little youma, and she was quite sure of that assessment.

Even when she made it to her own square, and found herself beside Cryptomelane...and yet looking at a nasty field of razor wire.

"Well. We'll have to be careful. This place clearly doesn't wish to fool around."

You’ve invaded their space and they seem keen to defend it. You can try to fight them, but the only way to escape them is to roll again.

“Distinctly not,” Cryptomelane agreed as Industria joined him in the space with the razor wire. Simply maneuvering to roll felt incredibly difficult. Everywhere he turned, it seemed that the wires waited for him, ready for him to make the exact wrong move necessary to take off his head, or at least slit his throat.

The pitter-patter of youma feet advancing toward their space made him sigh.

“Be careful,” Cryptomelane said as a warning. “They’re sharp.”

Thankfully, Ympe listened. Double thankfully, his diminutive size made it that much easier for him to avoid any issues. Most of the wire seemed to have materialized at a height more appropriate for Industria or Cryptomelane, rather than Ympe. Small blessings weren’t worth much until they got out of here, but when it meant Industria and Ympe were in somewhat less danger, Cryptomelane would accept that.

He needed all the blessings he could get when his next roll put him several spaces ahead of his lady and his youma companion. Grumbling in displeasure, he waved his free hand in the direction of the flapping wings (or whatever had made the sound of such). The sooner they got out of here, the better.

Space 10: A swampy smell fills the air. You take a step, and you seem to sink into it. Mud creeps over your feet, and you sink rapidly. Ankle deep, knee deep. Whether or not you squirm and fight against it, you are sinking. The mud is crushing and painful, and if you sink too deep it steals the breath from your lungs. There’s nothing to grab onto; you have to roll your dice quickly before that too gets sucked into the muddy quicksand.

"I will," Industria promised, carefully winding her way through the wires. She winced when she glanced back and saw that Ympe had caught up to them, but he seemed to be doing alright, making his way through.

Right as she got to the end, though, she took a careless step, and a wire sliced into her shoulder.

"Ow!" She hissed, reaching up to grip the sluggishly bleeding wound. "It seems...the threats here are quite real." Or, well, real enough.

And her next square wasn't any better. She lagged behind, now, and this one...this one seemed to want to trap her forever. Suck her in. The last had been a more immediate danger, but this awful, vile swamp was still a struggle.

"Ugh, disgusting," she complained, as she struggled forward--she wasn't going to linger and be trapped. She had to be swift, to roll and get out.

Space 15: Bats. Maybe you missed them attacking earlier, but they’re back again, and angrier than ever. Instead of just screeching or scratching, they’re swooping down and biting now–and the effects are instantaneous. The little teeth are sharp and painful, but once bitten you might feel agitated and prone to violence, and you might feel perpetually cold and hungry with no relief in sight. The effects might last when you leave the square–or they might linger for a few hours or days after you get out of here.

Space 11: You hear a frantic flapping above you, but that’s all the warning you get before a hoard of bats descend. They scratch and slap and screech, but you avoid getting bitten. For now. You’ve invaded their space and they seem keen to defend it. You can try to fight them, but the only way to escape them is to roll again.

Industria’s warning was met with a nod—and, as she got closer, a slight flush in Cryptomelane’s cheeks as he realized that she probably hadn’t seen the nod. “Duly noted, my love,” he told her, readying himself to roll again. “I will exercise the utmost caution.”

One good thing about all of this: Ympe’s odd little chittering noises made it easy enough to tell when he was rolling. The number the die gave him this time must have made him happy, given the delighted shriek that followed. Then, came the pitter-patter of youma feet as he caught up to Cryptomelane once more. It didn’t take the youma long to notice what was going on in this square on the board: the sounds of screeches and flapping wings made it clear enough, and more so when one of the bats dove for Cryptomelane.

Whatever it intended to do to him with its bite, he knocked it aside with little effort on his part. That earned some clapping and some of Ympe’s joyful cackling sounds. On one hand, that felt quite nice. Being recognized in this way, Cryptomelane did enjoy it. But on the other hand, he didn’t want to let his dear friend get any bad ideas.

Although he felt the presence of something trying to push him forward, Cryptomelane lingered briefly. Taking a knee beside Ympe, he looked Ympe in the eye. “Do not antagonize the bats,” he told Ympe, gently but firmly, letting himself roll. “You have an advantage from being so small. We don’t need to learn what happens when a youma suffers damage in a place where you may not make it back to Negaspace.”

Once he’d advanced the five spaces that his die requested, Cryptomelane learned exactly how correct he’d been with that warning.

As he settled into the space, the bats returned, all flapping wings and shrieking at him. This time, though, they proceeded right into swooping at Cryptomelane. While he managed to knock several of them away, getting slightly scratched but largely unharmed, one of them made it to his neck. Cryptomelane gasped in both shock and pain, but otherwise made no sound as the bat bit him. Trying to knock it away accomplished nothing.

“We may be going to the emergency room after this,” he bit out, speaking up so Industria could hear him. “Thank you, Negaverse health insurance, because I suspect I will find myself in need of a rabies vaccine.”

“Oi,” Ympe called out, very helpfully, “what’s a ‘rabies’?”

Space 16: As you step into your square, something cracks. At first, you can’t tell what it is, but as your full weight moves onto the square, the ground shifts beneath you. It’s cold, and it’s ice, and a hole falls underneath you, plunging you into frigid waters. There’s enough floating ice that you should still be able to roll the dice to get out of here, but you have to go quickly–you’re soaked, in chilly water, and something just swam by your feet.

"Good," Industria said, glad her warnings were taken seriously, though she supposed she shouldn't have worried. Of course Cryptomelane would take her seriously. "I'll be very upset if we don't all make it to the other side, mostly in one piece."

At least she was lucky enough to miss the bats. She passed Ympe and Cryptomelane both on her way to her next square, frowning the entire time. How had those animals even gotten in here? Were they real? Had they been created by this strange place?

Questions that were difficult to answer.

"I'd also like to get my arm checked," she said, "given that I went from having it cut to a muddy, vile swamp...I worry about infection," she exhaled, unhappily, starting towards her own square just one past Cryptomelane and his bats.

Ympe's question, at least, was not so difficult as "where are the living creatures in this bizarre space-between coming from".

"A very virulent disease, sometimes passed by animal bites," she said, as she stepped onto her square, "and best to get vaccinated if there's any risk of exposu--"

Her words were cut off by a scream, as the ground gave out underneath her and she plunged into icy water.

Space 19: You’re so close! Almost at the end! But the space you’re standing on shifts and shakes and seems to crumble beneath you. You have to hold on; there’s nowhere to fall but down into the deep abyss. If you manage to hang on for long enough, you find some invisible purchase and can pull yourself back up, but it’s quite the ordeal. Make sure you don’t get cut on falling spaces! The ground restores itself once you roll again.

Space 13: At first, the square is quiet. Nothing seems amiss. It’s unnerving in how safe it seems. But then, it only takes a few seconds before you understand why. It’s just taken a moment for them to get to you. The patter of tiny feet is rapidly approaching. There’s no light to see them, but there’s a reflection in their beady eyes. Rats. Thousands of them. Chittering, frothing in the mouth. These are strangely grotesque, mutated abominations. They’re running at you like they haven’t got a fear in the world–only, hungry. And rage. If they get to you, they’ll eat you alive. The ground is trembling with their weight. You’d better roll quickly if you don’t wind up a meal.

Although Ympe nodded at Industria’s explanation, Cryptomelane wondered (a bit distantly, mixed in with the disgust over this situation and the lingering pain of being bitten by bats) if his little companion really understood the concept being laid out for him. Youma did not entirely seem to have a functional concept of “disease” in the same way that humans did. It might have been that all Ympe needed to understand was that Cryptomelane and Industria were worried about each other’s wellbeing.

Or maybe it didn’t matter quite so much as—“Industria!”

“Tria! Nooooo!”

Hearing her scream, watching her fall out of her square, Cryptomelane tried to run ahead. She had only moved forward one square. He could get in there to help her—except that he couldn’t. As Ympe had done before, Cryptomelane crashed face-first into the invisible wall at the edge of his square.

Right. Rolling first.

“Ympe!” He whipped back toward his companion. “Come on, roll!”

After the good progress of Ympe’s last roll, Cryptomelane hoped his friend’s next roll would get him even further. But when he next heard a noise from Ympe—a raspy little shriek, followed by a series of yelped out little no no no no no no NOs—his companion had only moved forward two spaces from where he had last stood. Worse yet, Ympe was bouncing on his square. Up, and then some desperate fluttering from his tiny black wings. Alas, that proved quite useless. Ympe’s wings didn’t allow him to hover, let alone fly……and when his feet hit the ground, he jumped up again, wailing.

“Is RATS!!!” On his next jump, Ympe kicked down at the rats apparently terrorizing him. “Icky yucky gross no no no—”

He kept on that way, and Cryptomelane wanted to comfort him. Clutching at the spot where the bat had bitten his neck—applying as much pressure as he could with just his hand—he felt as though he should have comforted him. But as he tried to think of the words to do so, his mind collided with a chill washing over him. Worse yet, some part of him gnashed and raged against the bars of a cage he hadn’t realized he’d filled with anything. Biting, clawing inside of him and yearning to lash out at someone. Allowing himself to do that was out of the question. Cryptomelane had no quarrel with his own anger in general, but unleashing it toward Industria and Ympe? He couldn’t think of a worse action on his own part.

The distraction didn’t help: another bat cleverly took advantage of Cryptomelane’s unfocused state, diving in to dig its fangs into his wrist.

Wincing, he rushed to roll his own die.

Escaping the bats should have come as a relief. Getting closer to the exit should have meant that even more so. Yet, Cryptomelane needed to help Industria. Edging into her square, he dove for the hole into which she’d disappeared. He plunged his hand into the freezing water, reaching for her hand with no idea where she even was. And that, it seemed, was a bridge too far for the gameboard.

Not content to simply urge him forward, the invisible force that had chastised him before shoved Cryptomelane out of Industria’s last square.

Rolling his eyes, he trudged the rest of the way to his designated space. He should have been relieved. He knew that. But he couldn’t even begin considering that before he felt the floor start crumbling beneath him.

Of course that would happen. Of course it would.

Distantly, Industria heard Cryptomelane and Ympe calling out for her. She must have terrified them, she realized, screaming like that as she dropped into the water. But everything felt sort of...muffled and separate.

She was cold. She was wet. She was...

She had to get out.

She swam, hard, for the surface, managing to scramble up onto a little bit of surviging ice.

"I'm alright!" She called. "Wet, and cold, but alive!"

Something brushed past her foot, a pressure against her boot. Her chest clenched in horror. That was definitely encouragement enough to move--so she rolled her die and scrambled, desperately, out of the water and off her square.

She caught up with Cryptomelane. In this case, that was not a good thing.

The floor was coming out from under both of them, and she scrambled forward, desperately grasping for an edge to hold onto.

"Cryptomelane! Are you alright?" They were so close to the end, they just had to make it that last bare inch--surely they could escape, and poor Ympe would catch up soon enough.

If he could have watched how Ympe and Industria progressed, then maybe Cryptomelane wouldn’t have felt quite so ill-at-ease. As things stood, however, his chest grew tight and his breaths shorter. With all his strength, he clung to the wall, the only solid-feeling thing around himself and Industria.

“I’m alright,” he said, after giving himself the best moment he could spare to steady his nerves. Everything in this gameboard had been a nightmare, but none of it had been lethal. The things that could most easily go that way (Industria’s risk of exposure to any number of infections and Cryptomelane’s potential exposure to rabies), they would address once they got out of here. “Our proximity to the exit currently supersedes all other potential stressors, save for two.”

One of them, Industria coming to any serious harm. The other, Ympe coming to any serious harm.

“What of yourself,” Cryptomelane asked, readying his hand to roll. “Are you……”

At the sound of pitter-pattering little footfalls, he trailed off. He looked up just in time to shift against the wall, then lean back. Maybe it wasn’t the most artful catch, but he did bag himself an armful of little youma.

“Melly!” Ympe cried, his voice brighter than the situation really called for (at least, in Cryptomelane’s opinion). A string of delighted little cackles followed. “We got this, right? Gettin’ outta here, yes yes?”

Answering the question with his actions, Cryptomelane pulled both himself and Ympe up out of the pit, onto the slim margin of remaining gameboard space. Once he’d set Ympe down and gotten himself mostly stable, he called down to Industria and shifted to a position where he could better extend her his hand. Whether she took it or not was up to her, and Cryptomelane did trust her to get herself out of the hole if she preferred. But it was only courteous to put forth the offer.

Once they were all secured, he could roll and proceed ahead. Even though the promise of an exit greeted him, he turned back to Ympe and Industria. He had promised not to leave without them, and so he wouldn’t.

Space 20: The end; once you have arrived here you are free to leave. You will see be basked in the glow of a beautiful, opalescent aura that will take you back home. If you arrived with a guest, you can leave without them or choose to stay until they make it to the end as well. When you arrive back in Destiny City, you may choose to keep the six sided die–if nothing else, it’s pretty! Though, it doesn’t seem to have any magical qualities, that might be for the best.

They were all almost there. They'd converged on the final space, and all of them were alive, and when Cryptomelane reached out to pull her out of the pit, Industria gladly took his hand. She could help herself, yes, but there was a pleasure in allowing assistance from one person and one person only, and as she came up the side, she was smiling, even considering the sluggish bleeding from the cut on her shoulder.

"I'm alright," she said, "especially since we seem to be at the end." Rolling her dice felt like a formality. But it seemed they would leave together--which was the far better option.

She kept his hand in hers as she stepped forward, pulling him with her to the end.

"And just one more step for you as well, Ympe," she encouraged, beckoning their youma companion forward.

They'd made it out. All of them, together. As was correct, in her opinion.

Ympe didn’t need to be invited twice. Everything about this whole excursion had been Very Much A Lot in ways that he hadn’t much enjoyed. As soon as Industria beckoned to him, he was rolling. Then, with his die’s permission, he scuttled into the last square, heading right for His Place at Cryptomelane’s side.

Maybe the night wasn’t over yet. Cryptomelane and Industria still needed to power down and go to the emergency room. But as the three of them left the gameboard and returned to Destiny City—together and intact—that felt like the best victory any of them could have asked for right now.
