Amateru enjoyed patrolling with his long-time partner and future husband. They had an easy time ensuring the safety of civilians between the two of them, easily dispatching a couple of Lieutenants who thought they could take on the aliens. Well, at least one of them—Amateru delighted in watching his tiny fiancé kick the a** of someone who thought Elkurud was easy pickings.

Tonight had been quite a fun night. At least, up until this moment.

A pair of dice, laying in the gutter up against the curb, caught his eye, and he nudged Elkurud, pointing out the strange dice.

"They seem like they might... belong to someone? They're too fancy to be random trash," he said lowly, frowning as he leaned down to pick one up.

Big mistake.

The world went dark and he froze with panic, heart hammering in his chest. What was going on? He swallowed and blinked hard. His breathing came faster and faster as he tried to make sense of what he was seeing—a dark expanse, suddenly lighting up with strange boxes of light drawn into the ground.

"Elkurud?" he called out, trying not to panic too hard and failing.

It was always a joy just to get to spend time with Amateru. Yes, most of Elkururd's time was spent with Amateru these days, but after a thousand years, one couldn't blame him for being a bit clingy with his fiance, could they? After all, he'd thought his beloved almost certainly lost. So to undo that was...a blessing. One he had not expected and would treasure forever.

Or at least for as long as they had, getting to fight side by side.

It felt good to show Chaos exactly what they were capable of--especially, fort Elkurud, given that he couldn't do anything about the Chaos poisoning his own world.

It made him feel a little sick inside, thinking about it. But he didn't let himself dwell for long.

Especially not when there were interesting things to pay attention to, like pretty abandoned dice.

"Did someone drop them?" He wondered aloud, moving with Amatero to pick up the second one. "How--"

Odd, he'd meant to say.

Suddenly things were significantly more than odd.

"I'm right here, love," he said, moving to stand next to Amateru and putting a hand on his arm. "We're alright. And I'll bet these dice are our key to getting out of here."

Space 3: A strange fog rolls in once you land here. You lose sight of nearly everything, including the game board. If you want to roll, you’re going to have to get close to the ground to even see where you’re supposed to go next. Hopefully nothing sneaks up behind you

Amateru shifted to face Elkurud, then nodded, trying to calm down. His heart hammered in his chest like a terrified rabbit rather then the big strong bull he was.

"Yeah," he muttered, reach to take Elkurud's hand and kiss the back of it. That, at least, made him feel better.

He rolled the die and stepped forward.

The fog that filled the area immediately freaked him out again, but he took deep breaths. He hated having Elkurud taken from his sight like this.

Space 1: You feel eyes upon you, and hear a faint chuckling, like you’re the butt of someone’s joke. It sets a bad mood for the rest of this game; you’re already being judged–and, it looks like a long road ahead.

Elkurud smiled up at Amateru, giving him a little, reassuring nod. "We can do this."

Anything, they could overcome it together. Even if they were separated by this stupid game, they would most certainly both make it out. He knew it, deep down, with certainty.

So he rolled his die, and groaned at the one.

"Not a great start," he said, and he took his step forward, and frowned. Something was laughing at him. Mocking.

"Something here thinks we're funny," Elkurud said, flatly. "I'm about to be hilarious."

Space 7:Something is twitching and flapping above you, and while you might be minding your own business, something is a little too invested in what you’re doing. You can’t see them, but you suddenly hear shrill, high pierced noises that are disorienting and confusing. They can bring about dizziness and pain and can cause vertigo if you’re stuck in them for too long.

Amateru cracked a small smile at hearing that. Well, at least his sweet love was alright, if he was being sarcastic. Taking another deep breath, he rolled the die and moved forward four squares.

He paused, baffled, and looked up. Nothing. Then what was the squeaking and squawking all about? Invisible bats? He scowled into the air. "I'm with something that sounds incredibly annoying, but we seem to be doing alright so far," he called back to Elkurud.

This time, Elkurud's die was a little kinder, and he grinned with delight when he realized that he was on the same square as Amateru.

"Look at that, back together," he said. Though the relief was short-lived--before long, the screeching started, and Elkurud winced, hard. "Can't stay for long, though, that's...oh, I feel a little sick..."

Ugh, awful.

Space 12: The smell of smoke is in the air. You can’t see what’s burning, but you can hear distant screams, and–carnival music? It feels like people are running past you, and the air fills with panic and alarm–but there’s nowhere for you to go, and the smoke is so thick. You’d better roll quickly so you can get out of here.

Amateru bent to press a quick kiss to Elkurud's lips as he rolled the die, hoping to distract his love from the sick feeling. He checked his roll and strolled forward, brow furrowed.

The smoke, fire, and distant screaming was startling, but he didn't feel much of a pressing panic himself. Mostly... he was baffled by the very strange music playing. Was this some kind of movie scene? He coughed, eyes watering, and decided he should probably get a move on quickly.

Space 11: You hear a frantic flapping above you, but that’s all the warning you get before a hoard of bats descend. They scratch and slap and screech, but you avoid getting bitten. For now. You’ve invaded their space and they seem keen to defend it. You can try to fight them, but the only way to escape them is to roll again.

Elkurud leaned up on his toes to hold the kiss for a moment longer than perhaps was safe, given their situation--but if he let Amataru go without a little extra affection, who knew how long it would take for them to get back together?

Well. Alright. It couldn't be particularly long, given that this didn't seem like this could go on forever. But still.

He rolled his die and moved forward, and frowned as he stopped a square short of catching up to Amateru.

"So close, and yet," he said, frowning--and then the flapping came, and suddenly he was not ********>" Oh, that was ridiculous. He darted forward, hoping he could escape fast.

Space 17: Something howls in the distance. It’s loud and echoes with such ferocity it seems to shake you. On the other side of you–another howl. Closer. This one is loud enough to hurt your ears. The ground trembles with the force of something charging at you. A growl, a snarl. Yellow eyes staring you down. There’s not just one monster out there–there’s several, and they’re all coming for you.

Amateru coughed again as he picked up his die and made his way out of the square, feeling better immediately as he traveled forward. Ugh, fire was not friendly, however familiar it was.

The howls and the eyes made him feel like he was being hunted. He snorted, tail flicking wildly, tried to make himself look larger. He could get scrappy, if he needed to. Still, it was probably better to roll the die and get out of this square....

Space 14: The ground is sticky. You land on this and immediately dip, as though you’ve stepped on a trampoline. Close inspection reveals that you are standing on an intricately woven web–and your shoes are stuck. And something is skittering just on the horizon.

At least he managed to escape the bats without too much injury. Elkurud was glad for that--his arm felt a little battered from trying to smack them away, but that would be nothing he couldn't ask Amateru for a little healing to fix. Small injuries were easy to dismiss, in the end. And he made his way forward, finding himself on a new square, on....alarmingly unstable ground. It bounced. Wiggled under him. And then he found himself, partway across, stuck.

And there was something moving in the dark.

Well, only one thing for it that he would probably regret later.

Elkurud bent down and very speedily unlaced his boots. The were magical; they'd reappear the next time he powered up. He was not risking whatever might come from a massive spider monster in the dark.

His stockings, fortunately, didn't seem to get as stuck, and he was able to make his way across, throwing the dice ahead of him as he went.

Ugh. Bats, spiders, screams, laughter...what a place. He wanted out.

Space 20: The end; once you have arrived here you are free to leave. You will see be basked in the glow of a beautiful, opalescent aura that will take you back home. If you arrived with a guest, you can leave without them or choose to stay until they make it to the end as well. When you arrive back in Destiny City, you may choose to keep the six sided die–if nothing else, it’s pretty! Though, it doesn’t seem to have any magical qualities, that might be for the best.

Amateru sighed with relief as he made it to the end, and turned to watch Elkurud's progress.

"You got this, honey!" he shouted, hands around his mouth to amplify his voice.

Space 18: You smell something poison, something noxious. You pass through a haze of strange, green gas as you enter the square, but it fades after a few seconds. You feel cold. You feel empty. You start to decay. Maybe a part of you knows it’s an illusion, but in that split second when your body feels like it might go limp and when you look at your hand and see skin melting. You see bone. You’d best roll the dice so you don’t wind up a skeleton prop for the next player.

Of course the damned game had to save the absolute worst for last.

Elkurud could hear Amateru's encouragement, and honestly, he was feeling fairly alright even after passing through the strange green haze.

"I'll be there soon," he said, and he moved forward, lifting up his hand to throw the die--

And he let out a tiny, stunned gasp.

His hand was melting. Decaying, rapidly.

He threw the die as hard as he could, racing forward. It had to be fake, it had to be an illusion, it had to--

Elkurud was not going to test what happened if it went on too long.

Amateru shifted anxiously from foot to foot, nearly jumping when he thought he saw Elkurud's bones. Oh, no, that was not good.

"Almost there!" he said encouragingly, feeling helpless.

The damage reverted, as soon as he stepped off the square, but if Elkurud was a little hasty running forward, if he crashed a little desperately into Amateru when he met him in that soft, warm light that signaled safety, he thought that was perfectly understandable.

"We need to leave," he said. "I don't want to spend another minute in this cursed place."

Butt hey had made it. They were safe, and together. Whatever the damn board wanted to throw at them--it didn't matter anymore.
