If he was reasonable, he would've left it alone. If he was reasonable, he would've remembered that he'd seen this before and knew what it did and where it would take him. If he was reasonable, he would've acknowledge that the risk wasn't worth the trinket, and he'd have a more successful night if he ignored the little opalescent die on the ground.
The problem was that Calaverite was not reasonable. When he saw a perfectly lovely and unattended souvenir on the ground, he had to have it! He didn't care that he already had a die that looked just like this one, and frankly, its acquisition was only barely a noteworthy memory in his head. It was from several years ago, and Cervantite had been there, but whatever, whatever, the rest was muddy and irrelevant. It was just one tiny thing in his ever-growing hoard, and said hoard was about to grow exactly one die-size larger.
So, Calaverite picked it up off the ground, consequences be damned.
It was only after he had it in his hand that the memory came back a little stronger: fog, fire, freezing cold, threat of death- But when had he ever been scared away by mere threat? This time, too, as he stood at the very beginning of the game, Cala wasn't worried.

Besides being a little miffed that he wasn't a master-game-boarder, rolling sixes and breezing through any potential problems, Calaverite was just a little too stupid and too full of himself to sense problems on the horizon. He trudged through the misty spaces, clutching his newfound toy and trying to squint ahead and around for what things might be hiding just out of sight.
It was just that it seemed like anything here wouldn't make itself known until he actively ran into it, which was both annoying- and a little boring! If anything in the Game wanted a piece of him, it should just come and get it! Cala would fight off anything that came to face him- So it was probably wise of the things on the board to not face him at all. Something smashed into him from behind, with enough force to lift the frail and fragile and severely underweight Senshi clean off his feet.
Calaverite yiped out a sound of shock as he crashed into the ground, but hardly as soon as he'd been lifted, he was whirling around like a startled cat- on all fours like one too, spitting and snapping like he was going to tackle back whatever assaulted him.
Another hit lurched him from the side, enough to bruise and batter his criminally underweight and undernourished figure, and Calaverite was rapidly becoming aware that even if he should be able to see and touch what attacked him, he simply couldn't. There was certainly a fight to be had here... Just not one he could win. And that was the most offensive thing of all. An enemy he couldn't see or touch or do anything to besides get away from.
"You like that, huh?" He sneered, still crouched low. "Worse than the White Moon. Coward. Won't fight." He snapped his teeth, as if in some world he could close his jaw around the things flanking and crashing into him, but he couldn't. He could only roll to escape.
