The Gameboard

Destiny City is a large place, with a large population. It’s not uncommon to find a lost item here or there. Maybe a keychain, an earring, a book.

But, a six sided die? That’s different.

While traveling through Destiny City, you find a strange little object. It looks like old, stained wood, but something shiny in it catches your eye. How could you resist picking it up? But then, maybe you've found one of these dice before. Maybe you remember the Gameboard, already.

That's okay.

Even if you know better than to pick it up, all you have to do is look at it, and it's ensnared you. Again.

It looks like a normal die in terms of shape, and each side has a gilded number, one through six, carved into it. The most interesting part of it all is that the dice seems to be made of old, stained wood with fossilized opal throughout the whole piece. Something about it called to you, and now that it has your attention, a harsh wind slams into you. Darkness falls all around you–and then, slowly, a path illuminates. It’s black all around you; there’s no light, but you can see clearly marked spaces.

A line of squares unwind in front of you, each clearly marked.

You can’t see anything around you, can’t feel anything else–just the gameboard. And the die. Whether its in your hand or on the ground where you left it, it's there with you.

Even if you don’t recognize the game, you don’t really need instructions to know how to play–you have a die, and you have a path. In the distance, you can barely make out a dark wooden platform at the end of the path, but it seems to have the same fossilized opal inlay as the die–and pretty golden symbols along the rim.

You can’t step out of your square. Trying to leave the gameboard results in you walking to an invisible barrier and it feels like slamming into a glass wall. You cannot leave your space–unless the die says you can. If you want to get out of here, you’re going to have to roll your way there–but it isn’t so easy.

Strange gold markings differ from one square to the next. There’s no telling what they mean–you’re going to have to land on them to find out.

Though, judging by the tension in the air, it’s probably not going to be anything good.

In a human guise, Daesva--Storm, wandered, hands in the pockets of her jacket as she watched the spooky holiday decorations that lined the city streets and lit up the shops and restaurants. It was fun. She enjoyed the spooky season, she'd decided, because momentary fear in a safe environment was... actually very fun. Plus? The cartoonish renditions were very, very cute.

She especially liked the bats.

So being out in the city, enjoying the sights and slight chill of the evening, all was... very good to her. She felt comfortable, and that awed her. Was she becoming too comfortable on Earth?

That wasn't such a cheery thought, and her brows furrowed as she shook her head lightly to clear the heavier contemplation. Kick it into the back of her mind for now. Focus on the cute and the fun for now.

Opening her eyes, though, she frowned to find... oh. She'd seen these before. Carefully, she crouched, aware of extremely few people along the section of road she was on, enabling her to feel comfortable to discretely consult her ComTech... yes! A die! A traditional tool used in many games all over Earth, from gambling to innocent fun.

Curious, she reached for it, unsure if perhaps someone had dropped it. But it was very pretty...

She hadn't exactly planned for another... whatever sort of relocation this was. She jerked back up to her feet, staring about at the emptiness around her. Immediately, she dropped the guise of Storm and reverted to Daesva, scowling and cursing as she tried to use her ComTech... but it wasn't getting any readings.

She'd dropped the die, having no use for it. Or so she assumed, until the die stopped rolling, and more of the illuminated ground she stood on... extended. It was easy to connect the number of spots to the number on the die.

".....I didn't agree to a game."

Space 2:
Something pale and ghostly slams into your back; you don’t see it, but it feels like it’s trying to push you forward–or to the side, or off the path. Thankfully, the magical glass walls stop you from going too far, but this is jarring–and might hurt.

Clearly, her agreement or not meant nothing to... whatever it was that drew her here. She glared down at the die, but still picked it back up, connecting the--ha--dots rather quickly. Roll the die, that many spaces open up.

She began to step forward when she just barely heard something racing up behind her. Pale, sickly hands shoved against her shoulders hard, her feet catching and stumbling. The empty abyss beyond the path lay waiting, an open maw, and this thing wouldn't stop shoving her towards the edge of the path, even as she tried to rear back and kick and elbow the thing. Nothing. She tried to redirect herself, move away, but it just adjusted in turn to continue to shove her to the edge.

Snarling, she tried once more to break away, jerking to the side and running forward. The pale hands didn't meet her again, though she felt them brush against her back briefly. She rolled the die, and kept going.

Space 3:
A strange fog rolls in once you land here. You lose sight of nearly everything, including the game board. If you want to roll, you’re going to have to get close to the ground to even see where you’re supposed to go next. Hopefully nothing sneaks up behind you.

...one? That's all she got? Offended, she glared down at the snake eye peering up at her from her hand, a sneer forming on her lips as if the thing were somehow sentient and could understand her disgust. If only. No, she was just angry at a damn inanimate object.

Magical, she assumed, but still.

She could still hear the movement behind her, the thing that grabbed and pushed at her before, as she ran into the next square with... with fog everywhere.

Squinting against the whiteout--greyout? whatever--Daesva could only cup her other hand against her chest to try and use it for a spot to roll the die, not trusting to lower herself to the ground or else risk being caught off guard amidst the mist. Especially with that thing still close behind her...

Space 7:
Something is twitching and flapping above you, and while you might be minding your own business, something is a little too invested in what you’re doing. You can’t see them, but you suddenly hear shrill, high pierced noises that are disorienting and confusing. They can bring about dizziness and pain and can cause vertigo if you’re stuck in them for too long.

The presence behind her faded at least as she moved on--and more than just one space, good. She had no idea how long this would be. Would it go to ten spaces? Twenty? Fifty? A hundred? Her nose wrinkled as she considered the potential of having to make that many rolls, if the die was especially cruel to her.

Something flapped up above, and she glanced up. Just beyond the light, something moved, and she could hear high-pitched sounds that made her wince and grimace, trying to roll the die quickly in her hand to keep moving forward.

Good thing, too. An especially loud shriek made her shrink back, head feeling like it was splitting and nausea racing to push bile to her throat as she stumbled with vertigo. But she could see the glow of the new path, so she could just... sort of. Kind of. Continue on.

....at least there were invisible walls keeping her from tumbling off...

Space 13:
At first, the square is quiet. Nothing seems amiss. It’s unnerving in how safe it seems. But then, it only takes a few seconds before you understand why. It’s just taken a moment for them to get to you. The patter of tiny feet is rapidly approaching. There’s no light to see them, but there’s a reflection in their beady eyes. Rats. Thousands of them. Chittering, frothing in the mouth. These are strangely grotesque, mutated abominations. They’re running at you like they haven’t got a fear in the world–only, hungry. And rage. If they get to you, they’ll eat you alive. The ground is trembling with their weight. You’d better roll quickly if you don’t wind up a meal.

Keep moving. Keep moving. Before her vision cleared and she could walk straight, she could hear the chittering and clicks of tiny, tiny claws. She couldn't make out the sheen of eyes just beyond the light of the path, but she could feel the ground rumble, and register something massive was coming at her. Quickly, from how the sound grew rapidly, and the world trembled harder and harder.

She grit her teeth and rolled again, not having any interest in sticking around to see what creature this was...

Space 17:
Something howls in the distance. It’s loud and echoes with such ferocity it seems to shake you. On the other side of you–another howl. Closer. This one is loud enough to hurt your ears. The ground trembles with the force of something charging at you. A growl, a snarl. Yellow eyes staring you down. There’s not just one monster out there–there’s several, and they’re all coming for you.

A howl. Lovely. First chittering, now a howl. Though the ground didn't shake like a giant marched towards her, she still found herself shaking. The sound itself tore through her, a second one even louder and chilling her, making her wince as her poor ears were again assaulted.

And then the ground did begin to shake, and Daesva caught the sight of a massive beast just beyond the light of the path, charging. More than one. Yellow eyes focused on her.

She rolled the die, and ran.

Space 20:
The end; once you have arrived here you are free to leave. You will see be basked in the glow of a beautiful, opalescent aura that will take you back home. If you arrived with a guest, you can leave without them or choose to stay until they make it to the end as well. When you arrive back in Destiny City, you may choose to keep the six sided die–if nothing else, it’s pretty! Though, it doesn’t seem to have any magical qualities, that might be for the best.

Ran and ran, until she met bright, brilliant light. Warm, inviting. The creatures that howled and snapped at her heels fell into silence, falling back into the empty abyss beyond the path that still lay illuminated behind her. Twenty spots. Her shoulders slumped as she took a few grounding breaths, trying to calm herself from the run.

And the fear.

This wasn't exactly what she'd meant about fun fear. This hadn't felt safe. Just the opposite. What would have happened if she'd not run? She shivered, moving towards the open light. Just because there were invisible walls keeping her on the path, didn't mean it'd keep things out...

She returned to the city though, and quickly slipped away, realizing she was still without her human guise now. Oops. But no one was around, and it was easy enough to regain her guise, and Storm stepped back onto the empty sidewalk with the pretty die still in her hand. With a huff, she shoved it into her pocket.

She could at least bring it back to the others to tell them about all this...
