Ronan crouched on the sidewalk, staring intently at a distinctly odd wooden item on the ground. There was no telling what those stains were, so curious as he was about it, he definitely shouldn’t pick it up. It was probably just some trash, right? Still, that didn’t need to stop him from looking at it. The thing was definitely interesting, with the glints of light that caught his eye from just the right angle. It couldn’t hurt to take a closer look, he could always wash his hands afterwards. Ignoring the sound of high heels on the pavement behind him, he plucked the object from its resting place.

Sailor Tempesti ran her fingers through her hair, carefully adjusting her new headpiece as she walked. Lovely as it was, every so often she couldn’t banish the admittedly foolish anxiety of it falling askew during battle, and the youma she’d just sent on its way had been a bit grabby. The absence of any other Chaos energy signatures allowed time for a bit of distraction adjusting her fuku.

As she caught sight of a figure crouched on the ground ahead of her, she became more sharply aware of her surroundings. It was hardly an outlandish sight in such a large city, but the uptick in non-Chaos related weirdness lately made it more difficult to rule out the possibility of something magically strange.

“Everything alright?”

Another die laid on the grass beside the stranger. He wasn’t facing it, but she should still get it away from him before he wound up in that weird…game space.

A vaguely familiar voice beside him managed to divert Ronan’s attention from the little cube in his hand before everything around them went dark except the…glow…emanating from strange markings along tracing along his acquaintance’s skin. He could deal with that confusing situation once they were out of whatever this was.

“What is this? Where ARE we?”

Ronan was painfully aware of his lungs as his head swung wildly from side to side, trying to make sense of the darkness that now surrounded them.
-----

Tempesti’s voice came softly, an attempt to calm the understandably panicked man sharing her space on the gameboard. “Well, I don’t know exactly where this place is, but I know how to get out.” She was reluctant to admit that she’d let two of those dice lure her into this trap, but that wouldn’t do much to help either of them. “I got caught in here before.” Her tone was sheepish as she spoke. “It’s a game. A messed up game. We can’t get out until we roll these dice and make it to the end. Just. Be careful. The floor isn’t exactly reliable. It fell out from under me toward the end. After getting weird a couple of times before that. But everything else seems like it might be an illusion. I think. None of it did any real damage.”

-----

“That is INSANE.” The volume and pitch of Ronan’s voice was embarrassing, as was the fact that he was shouting at someone who had disintegrated a monster in front of him. At least she didn’t seem like the type to disintegrate someone for yelling.

Tempesti nodded sympathetically, “I know, it really is. But it’s also true. I’ll go first. Whatever you do, just keep rolling your die and keep moving. Once we get to the end of the path we’ll be able to get out”

With a quick flick of her wrist, Tempesti’s die tumbled across the ground. Offering one last reassuring smile to her companion, she snatched it back up and stepped forward. Within moments she found herself completely engulfed in a dense fog that blocked the sight of everything outside of herself. “I’m still here! Just keep going!”

-----
Ronan couldn’t overstate the wave of relief he felt once Tempesti’s voice came from behind the misty shroud. This situation was alarming enough without the gameboard eating people. “OK. OK I’ll play along.”

With a few deep breaths, Ronan rolled his die.

Nearly jumping out of his skin at the sound of mocking laughter, Ronan hurriedly tossed his die once more.

Ronan felt the bile rise in his throat as the foul odor of decay surrounded him. There was something dead here. He tried to push aside the notion that it was what was left of whoever had last passed through this place before the sound of something dragging lanced through him with a rush of cortisol.

It was close.
It had to be close.
It sounded close.
The shadows were moving.
It wasn’t a shadow.
That was a hand. <********. That was a hand.
Keep moving.
Keep moving.

“Dammit!”
His forehead collided with some invisible barrier before he remembered the die clutched too tightly in his fist. Going to leave a mark. Deal with it later.
Right.
Anyway.
The only way forward.

-----
As the smell of saltwater rose around her, the dull ache of homesickness crept into every cell of Sailor Tempesti’s body, even as her mind pushed to the front of her mind the reality that unless something had gone very wrong, no sea bordered Destiny City. The alien ocean that called her was further still from whatever trick this game sought to play on her.

As though sensing her doubts the soundscape shifted around the senshi, filling the air with an eerily beautiful melody that drifted through the square. Her mind meandered toward the memory of the strange, invisible musician she’d heard months earlier, the powerful longing their song had evoked. For a few moments it felt as though they might join her, a prospect she welcome with all that she was even as the bitter brine of saltwater flooded her chest.

Her body reacted before her besotted mind, chilled hands clutching at her throat before tossing the die.

“Are you alright?”

Ronan’s voice came out slightly higher than he intended, not particularly thrilled by the possibility of having to deal with this place alone. Especially if it had managed to kill someone with actual magic on hand.

“I’m fine! Just a bit of a bruised ego!” Tempesti hoped that a bit of bravado shouted in a reassuring tone would be convincing. It wouldn’t do to make him even more scared of whatever was going on here.

The less than welcome sound of some very angry bats decided to join her attempts at assuaging his fears. “Just some bats!” As though to prove her wrong, they began to swarm her. The senshi managed to repel the first few, but their sheer numbers were overwhelming and she bit back a pained cry as she felt tiny teeth sink into her shoulder, then her thigh. Uncharacteristic fury swelled within her at their assault. Small as they were, she was not going to let them touch that civilian.

“Bitter Blast!”

As the wind and lightning dispersed the bats, she struggled to push aside her rage long enough to toss her die and get away from them.

Ronan wasn’t sure why the senshi needed magic to get rid of some bats but since they were in a place like this he couldn’t rule out the possibility that they were some kind of magical bats, in which case he was glad she was clearing them out.

Landing in his new square, Ronan was taken aback as an almost unbearably sweet melody drifted across his consciousness. Despite the fact that the sounds of water and…bells(?) maybe(?) competed with the song for his attention before he sank deeper into its beauty. As he began to choke he felt strangely distant from his body, as though somebody else was drowning in some horrifying supernatural game.

“Ronan! Ronan, roll your die!” The senshi’s shoulder struck the barrier separating her from the gameboard behind her as she tried to reach her companion, panicking at the whirl of possibilities plaguing her mind.

Tempesti’s voice pierced the darkness surrounding the civilian and with what effort he could muster, he cast his die.

It would be an understatement to say that Ronan was upset when the die delivered him exactly one square ahead of where he’d been standing. At least whatever had been singing and feeling him up didn’t follow. That positive didn’t do much to compensate for the fact that he was sinking into what seemed to be quicksand. Of course it was quicksand.

“DAMMIT!”

He threw the die again in the hopes of getting a bit further from where he was stuck.

A powerful odor assailed Tempesti’s nostrils as she landed in her next space, replaced quickly by a brutal chill. As she felt her skin shifting she briefly remembered Bacchus’ complaints about this very situation. They could commiserate about that later. Once they managed to get themselves out.

Tempesti felt a twinge of guilt as she landed safely at the end of the gameboard while Ronan was swearing someplace far behind her.

A bit further this time, Ronan was glad for that. Even if the space was suspiciously quiet. That wouldn’t last. This place didn’t seem to do quiet. As the ground began to shake beneath him, he turned to find himself facing down a horde of rats. Swearing under his breath, he threw the die one more time.

The die brought him so close to the end. He was getting out. This was it. Right? Predictably, the gameboard disagreed as he felt the ground begin to splinter beneath him. With a desperate lunge he grabbed for the edge of the square.

“Hang on!”

Tempesti ran to the barrier between their squares, crouching as Ronan gave the die one last terrified toss, landing in a heap beside her.

“I’d like to go home now.”
