Fire Belly Newts (15): Pranks are common this time of year, and what’s funnier than a little arson? A lot of things, actually, but for some reason there are frequent reports of small fires being set and abandoned all throughout the city. Most of the time, these fires burn out before causing much damage, but things are escalating and it’s only a matter of time before things start getting dangerous–especially with how dry it’s been, and all these dead, fallen leaves. But, it’s worse than just flammable debris. Sometimes, there are small patches of boiled pavement. Melted metal–guardrails, lamps, fire hydrants. Destruction is rampant, and no one knows why. But you do. You saw one of them. A foot long, black newt, with a bright-red belly that glowed brightly when it spat up real, liquid flame right in front of you. Lava pooled from its round little belly, ignited like a match to oil. It darts through alleys and storm drains, too fast to catch. At least you tried.

Esfir had forsaken powering up tonight. She was tired, mildly out of sorts and just… over Destiny City’s Seasonal Bullshit. Perhaps she’d had some vague hope that not powering up would protect her from the weirdness that abounded. Alas, as she stared at a patch of boiling pavement with a half melted bicycle rack next to it, she realized that the Bullshit was going to happen regardless. Crouching down near the patch, she could still feel heat pouring off of it. A suitable poking stick had been found and used. And nearly set on fire because Holy Gods It Was Still ******** Hot! Tossing the burning stick into the boiling pavement patch, she tilted her head and considered. And as she was considering, she saw a bright red glow, coming out from under a car.

A car that was in the process of melting as she watched. Cursing, Esfir stood up and ran over, just in time to see an alarmingly large lizard thing run out from under it. Black and red and radiating heat. It ran from her, faster than she would have thought possible. Looking between the melting and bubbling remains of the car and the fleeing lizard, she began swearing.

Then, she took off after the lizard.

After her run in with the well and how damp she’d been for hours afterward, Dani decided her next adventure should be a drier one. The strange little fires she’d been reading about were concerning; if nothing else, Dani planned to get a few pictures of the destruction, maybe inspire a painting of the carnage afterward. Snapping a few photos of the sunset and a few melted patches of asphalt, she nearly screamed when a brightly colored lizard darted between her legs and underneath a vehicle, it’s tongue flicking wildly as rubber tires began to bubble and pop in it’s proximity, tires hissing and spitting as air spewed out of them once melted through. Seemingly startled, the creature darted off with something shiny gripped between it’s jaws.

Her phone.

Spotting Esfir running after the creature, she pointed frantically, scrambling after it. “My phone! That little— thing, it’s got my phone!” She crowed, her heart beating double time as she watched the crimson critter scramble down an alleyway and out of sight. She could only pray the Otterbox on her phone would hold up against the heat a little longer than the debris around them. Frustrated, she threw her water bottle after the beast, watching it hit the wall and steam upon impact where the water spewed out across its molten flesh.

As she ran, Esfir heard someone yelling and turned her head slightly to see an older girl pointing towards the lizard. It had her phone? Huh, she thought, good luck with that. If it could melt cars and sidewalks, a mere phone wasn’t even going to be a blip on its radar. Still, she waved to show she’d heard. And, given how damned fast the lizard seemed to be, she yelled back, “Well? Try and help me corner the ******** thing!” She wasn’t entirely certain that they could corner it safely, but maybe the fiery s**t was a startle response? Or maybe they could herd it towards water. There were a few fountains throughout the city. Or maybe they could break a hydrant and cool things off that way?

Cripes, what a night to run around without her magic. At this rate, Destiny City was going to end up all the way on fire.

Dani opened her mouth to retort, only to yelp and pull the girl by the arm, stopping her before she stepped in a bubbling pool of asphalt. She picked up the pace after letting Esfir go, skidding over a slippery bit of pavement as she rounded the corner, her eyes widening, mouth agape. “Oh s**t.” Dani groaned, covering her mouth with one hand as she watched the lizard practically slither underneath a fruit-laden table, disappearing from sight, the only indication of it’s path being the shrieks of surprise and smoke from where it’s skin brushed against flammable surfaces.

The farmers market was not the kind of place for that thing to be running around, even if the scent of roasted fruit was almost pleasant. Chaos erupted, people scattering in every direction, while others tried to catch a glimpse of what was causing the commotion, creating a barricade of bodies Dani knew they’d struggle to get through. “We need to stop that thing before it sets the whole place on fire,” Dani groaned, her heart hammering in her throat. “I’m going to try and cut it off, do you think you can chase it down? Try to steer it towards some water or something? You’re pretty fast!”

As if on cue, there was a shout from one of the stalls deeper in the market, the huge, glowing lizard having dropped the phone in favor of shoving his head into the portable barbecue lined with rows of roast pork, the table groaning underneath his weight as he leaned on it, teeth crunching through roasted bone and sinew.

Under normal circumstances, having a stranger grabbing her arm and yanking would have earned said stranger a kicked shin or worse. But in this instance? Esfir was simply grateful to not be part of a real life reenactment of the dude in the subway tunnel from Volcano. “Thanks,” she gasped out, taking a second to steady herself and take in their surroundings. A moment later and she almost wished she hadn’t. This was precisely the sort of scenario she’d been worried about. Most of the chaos seemed to involve startled people and smouldering stalls. She watched as the lizard bolted this way and that and somehow, had the restraint to not snap at the girl when she was panicking about needing to stop the fiery little ********. Instead, she got closer and held up a hand. They had to be smart about this! Especially when she couldn’t risk powering up.

“Take a breath, girl. It’s only gonna make things worse if we start chasing it willy nilly because we’re panicking. I can herd it, but we have to pick a direction that’s away from all these people!”

She would have said more, only the screams distracted her. Head whipping around, she was just in time to see the lizard drop the phone that had been in its mouth in favor of diving head first into a portable barbecue pit. Which, okay. That was great and all, only as it ate, its body heat was melting everything around it. Still…

“Okay, new plan! Run at him and scare him away from the pit. I can grab more meat and bait him into chasing me. Once he’s following me, you get more food and catch up. We can try to lure him somewhere a little less inhabited.” Esfir was already moving, scooping warm smoked meat into her arms and rushing ahead. All that mattered was giving the lizard away from all these people.

Dani nodded, the tumbling nerves in her belly mixing with the excitement of seeing something so strange and new but she’d have time to think about that later. Later! Shoving a hand in her purse, she came out with a handful of dollars and tossed them onto a table selling tomatoes, grabbing a small container of them and running towards the beast. She didn’t know if she could scare the thing, but she could try to distract and annoy it into leaving it’s meal. Tossing one, it split as it hit the lizard square between the eyes, making it hiss in surprise and stumble off of the cart it had climbed on, tongue flicking wildly.

Attempting to resume it’s meal, the lizard tried to climb back up, only for Dani to repeat the action, pelting the creature with her makeshift ammo. It hissed again, baring glowing golden teeth before turning to run in the opposite direction, in search of an easier meal. She had just long enough to grab the cooling remains of her phone case and grimace, shoving it into her pocket before she redirected her attention again, stamping her feet to try and get the creature headed away from the commotion of the crowd.

As soon as she saw the lizard leave the pit and start moving, Esfir took a handful of meat and lobbed it into the damned thing's path. It hesitated for a breath and she worried that it would try to head back. Then, miracle of miracles, it swarmed over the meat, chomping happily.

"Yeah, you like that," she muttered, carefully tossing more food, this time a few feet from where it sat. She needed it to realize that if it wanted tasty meats, it needed to follow her. "C'mon, ya fiery weirdo." The lizard scurried to the next dropped offering and then the next. Grinning now, she took off running, careful to leave meaty gobbets every few feet. Now where to lead it... She couldn't tell if it was a youma or not without powering up, but she didn't dare risk doing so with so many people milling around. Though, on the whole, she didn't think it was. Crowds wouldn't spook a youma. No, she was pretty damn sure that this was just some weird ******** animal. It just also happened to be able to set things on fire. So, ideally, she needed some place where it wouldn't cause too much damage.

It would have to be the lake, wouldn't it? Not too many trees, though the beach might end up a little glassed... "Better than nothing," she muttered as she adjusted direction.
