'Dangerous creatures within the domain.
A maze-like structure awaits.
Defeat the monster within.
Reward ....'
Aoi didn't even pay attention to the reward or the potential thereof. They only had one thought running through their mind, and that thought was probably not the best to have when taking up a job that was supposed to help people.
In their life, Aoi had been called a menace, and a menace they were indeed going to be as they slipped into the domain.
Dark and dank with many corners to his behind, Aoi couldn't help but smile their wide, unsettling, fanged smile. As far as they knew, they didn't have competition, and the only other thing within this domain was a monster. All they had to do was...maybe toy with it a little. Give it a little exercise, tire it out...and the paper didn't say if it was supposed to be brought back alive or not!

Xaax usually didn't care about the well-being of others so when he heard there was a monster lurking around he wasn't very concerned. When he found out there might be a reward, that changed things. He set off to find the entrance to the maze the monster was reportedly found in, no real plan just his own wits and wiles to guide him.
He had taken flight to get there quicker and as it came into sight, he dove towards the ground, tucking his wings into his body as he landed with a grunt. He whipped his tail in annoyance and flicked some dirt off his hind. He hadn't noticed any other phox approaching so he assumed he was there alone, or at the very least first. His eyes darted around the area before he stepped through, unsure of what was waiting beyond, but confident that he was ready to face whatever it was.

Of course, a reward could only be collected if one could find the thing the reward was for. And as of the moment, Aoi had found absolutely nothing, though they hadn't made it a point to venture very far in, yet. Until they knew what they were dealing with, they wouldn't try to go deeper than necessary. So, when they thought they'd gone deep enough, they turned around to head back to the entrance, only to stop dead still in the shadows when they heard...something. Wingbeats? Steps? Surely a monster would have wings, right? And oh, hoiw fascinating would if be if they could get some wings of their own. Slinking closer, following the sounds they could hear, they tried to get a good look at what was there, probably not being too cautious since they had a slight problem with cockiness. Thinking nothing could get past them. The cockiness also drew a soft chuckle from them as they attempted to stalk whatever it was that was in the maze with them.

After walking for a little while, taking his time and lazily dragging the tip of his tail along the walls. It made an irritating scratching sound that he hoped would catch the attention of the monster. He listened carefully, ears twitching forward and back at any small sound or movements that weren't him. He was beginning to get bored when he caught a whiff of something. Or someone. Grinning he sneered, " I can smell you. I can smell your fear. Come out now, where I can see you." ((Totally referring Smaug with that last bit.))

"Oh, well, good for you. You must never have caused fear to scent something that isn't there." Aoi hissed from the shadows, slinking out and leaving black wisps in the wake of their pawsteps. Though not normally one to actually reveal themself when asked- rather, taunted in this case- the temptation of getting the reward faster if they just took care of business made them a bit blind to the potential situation. Not having met many winged creatures in their life, preferring to reside in domains where flight wasn't a great idea, Aoi could only assume that this was the monster. It was odd, the fact that a monster would look so phox-like, but who were they to really complain in the end? A reward was a reward and all it would take is their knife in this thing's ribs. Though, they did have one question that they decided to vocalize. "Odd, though, that a monster would be capable of common speech."

Xaax's golden eyes landed on the creature who had emerged. He dismissed their snide reply to his taunt. Their red eyes gleamed in the low light, and small trails of black smoke or mist followed their footsteps. Was this the monster? He wasn't really impressed as they weren't even his size. "I can take them," he thought. He sneered at the pale phox-like creature noticing their knife and then their chopsticks. That made him pause. What monster would have chopsticks? Perhaps they had stolen them from someone. They spoke again, this time Xaax paid attention to their words. They had called him the monster. Xaax moved to get a better look at them, stepping to the side, keeping his eyes on them. "You call me a monster?" he scoffed. "I may be a villain but I only see one monster here." He grinned wickedly, dropping his chopsticks to the floor, ready to attack. Just as he was about to lunge, a loud shuddering roar came from behind him.

Oh this was precious, a monster claiming to only be a villain?! HAH! There was no way they could see that going over well outside the maze, therefore they must surely be who they were meant to-- The roar sounded, and Aoi nearly dropped their knife as they turned around. The rock they were next to? Yeah, it seemed to have come alive and was now showing it's teeth, dribbling saliva and looking like it was about to have both phoxes for breakfast. "Oh." Aoi breathed before they quickly whipped around to stand, instead, by the phox they had just been threatening. "Well. Split the reward?" They asked, the shadowy marking on their legs starting to separate and whip around like little tentacles. And no, they were not going to apologize. Yet.

He unfolded his wings and spun around, facing the monster who had shown it's ugly face. "Wooo-wee!" he exclaimed excitedly. "Now that's a monster." The creature roared again and snarled with a very toothy grin. It's claws looked murderous and still had some blood on them, perhaps from another reward seeker who'd been no match for it. "I don't know about all that," he drawled, referring to sharing the reward. "I guess it depends on if you survive or not." He sneered at them, then returned his attention to the monster. Xaax whipped the air with his wings, stirring up dust and sending it towards the monster, hoping to distract it. He pressed forward, flapping harder, lowering his head to try and shield his own eyes from the dust.

"Same goes for you." Aoi chuckled, digging their claws in as their magic was used to lash out at the monster with their tentacled shadow magic. As scary as the monster was, Aoi felt very little fear. Hell, if the stranger she had just met had half as much gumption as they seemed, they'd be just fine. Aoi was used to finding allies in strange times and strange places and never seeing them again, so it was all to natural to slip into the partner position, watch their six, and eventually figure out a way to bring down the terrible creature. What in the world was such a thing doing in the domain anyways?! But there was very little reason to question things when they had just the most marvelous time fighting! The blood, the bones cracking, not knowing what their current partner was going to do only to learn their movements and openings to fill them for maximum carnage and efficiency. What a fun little reprive. "Not so terrible, really." Aoi whispered, recalling their shadow magic once the day- rather, night- was won. A lick of their blade later and it was cleaned. The creature's blood did taste a bit foul, they'd have to see if it had been magically created later. "I wouldn't mind seconds...If we happen to need more than this reward..."

The monster had gotten a couple swipes in that connected with his side and another that had gotten him across the cheek. Nothing a little cleaning wouldn't help. After the creature was defeated, he bit off one of it's claws and tucked it under his horn. "This right here is reward enough for me," he said with a grin. He went over and retrieved his chopsticks. "You did good kid, I'll give you that. Hell, color me impressed. But don't expect me to go skipping off to slay some more monsters like some Scooby-Doo gang s**t. I work alone. That was a one-time deal, and deal's done." He turned, waved his tail at the other Phox in a sort of salute, and left the way he came in.

Kid? Kid?! KID?! First off, the fact that they thought that they would want some sort of stupid scooby-doo teacm up was absolutely insane, what about Aoi screamed they'd wanna do anything like that!? Second, celectial help them, taking a trophy like that was just so...Damn this phox thought they were a badass, huh? "Yeah, sure, no problem. I'll keep that in mind if I ever bump into you again." And see how many ways they could get under his skin. The lone wolves were always the most fun to mess with, abd this one was already so fun to prod a little. "Enjoy you reward~" Aoi singsonged, waiting until he was gone to make their own exit. At least they'd found a fun new friend and not just a reward!
