Quote: Destiny City is a large place, with a large population. It’s not uncommon to find a lost item here or there. Maybe a keychain, an earring, a book. But, a six sided die? That’s different. While traveling through Destiny City, you find a strange little object. It looks like old, stained wood, but something shiny in it catches your eye. How could you resist picking it up?
Saiph had not wanted to power up. At all. After the last trip to her homeworld, after finding out that she may have been responsible for the death of a boy… No. She would have happily resigned herself to never powering up again. But Cuan had talked her into it. Even after finding her curled up in the trees sobbing, Cuan had accepted her immediate need to return to Earth. The kitten hadn’t pushed or questioned, at least, at the time. But she’d been quite insistent on Saiph powering up and at least patrolling. Patrolling didn’t always require the use of other magics. Saiph had cried, sulked, screamed and begged, but Cuan had remained sweetly implaccable on this point.
So here I am, she thought bitterly. Just a little monster in waiting, wandering around. She kicked at bits of rock and dead branch that littered the sidewalks. Thus far, she hadn’t felt any auras at all and that, she decided, was how she liked it. As she kicked out at another rock, her eye was caught by a dull gleam on the ground. Bending to look, she saw a die made on stained wood and what looked like streaks of opal.
“Fancy,” she whistled as she scooped it up and rolled it in her hand to examine. Any further thoughts were startled out of her head by a sudden and violent gust of wind that she could feel actually pushing her. Then, the wind died and shadow surrounded her. When she looked around, she saw a line of squares - like a boardgame, each numbered, stretching out into the distance.
It took a moment, but as she glanced at the board before her and then the die in her hand, Saiph began cursing.

Quote: Space 3: A strange fog rolls in once you land here. You lose sight of nearly everything, including the game board. If you want to roll, you’re going to have to get close to the ground to even see where you’re supposed to go next. Hopefully nothing sneaks up behind you.
After releasing some inventive swears, Saiph took a moment to close her eyes and calm down. The numbers on the dice and on the board looked practically identical. For whatever reason, the legendary seasonal weirdness had decided to target her. Okay. Fine. This was fine. She was clearly meant to roll the dice in order to move. She could do this… Opening her eyes, she rolled the die carefully, making note of the number it landed on. Scooping it up, she moved three spaces and stopped.
Almost the moment that her feet touched the square, she was surrounded by a thick, obscuring fog. She couldn’t see anything, not the path ahead, not even where she stood. The only clear area seemed to be a thin strip near the ground. Grumbling, she got down on hands and knees, rolling the die. She could just barely make out a number as she stood back up and began to stumble forward, arms held out defensively…

Quote: Space 6: You hear a shrill, humming noise; it sounds almost like something is firing past you–and sometimes, you even feel a sharp burst of air, like something has just missed you. Maybe, even, it does get a slice out of you. Sharp, bladelike threads seem to string up around you; you’d best be careful not to get cut on any of them between now and your next dice roll.
Gripping the die tightly, Saiph walked until her feet seemed to freeze in place. Well. That was three spaces then. The first thing she noticed was the noise. Shrill. Humming. She paused, trying to figure out what it sounded like when she felt a sharp sting across her shoulder. Yelping, she clapped a hand over her shoulder and felt oozing warmth. Pulling her hand away, she saw a smear of blood. Gulping, she could see oddly gleaming filaments appearing all around her. It was the kind of gleam that you only saw on extremely sharp knives… Gulping again, she opted to not toss the die this time. Instead, she let it drop from her hand and gently bounce. She had just barely registered the next number before she started moving again, wanting to get through before those weird, sharp threads completely closed off the way.

Quote: Space 10: A swampy smell fills the air. You take a step, and you seem to sink into it. Mud creeps over your feet, and you sink rapidly. Ankle deep, knee deep. Whether or not you squirm and fight against it, you are sinking. The mud is crushing and painful, and if you sink too deep it steals the breath from your lungs. There’s nothing to grab onto; you have to roll your dice quickly before that too gets sucked into the muddy quicksand.
One. Two. Three. Saiph was counting moves… Four. The first thing she noticed as the crossed into the next space was the smell. Thick and fetis. Swamp-like. Gross, but not overwhelming. She could totally handle the smell. Then, her foot actually touched the space and she felt a moment of panic as it didn’t land on anything solid. Instead, it sank halfway up to her knee. Quicksand? This space was ******** quicksand?!?
Rather than scream or panic more than she already was, Saiph blindly rolled the dice, floundering through muck and throwing herself towards the next square.

Quote: Space 12: The smell of smoke is in the air. You can’t see what’s burning, but you can hear distant screams, and–carnival music? It feels like people are running past you, and the air fills with panic and alarm–but there’s nowhere for you to go, and the smoke is so thick. You’d better roll quickly so you can get out of here.
The smell of smoke rapidly replaced the swamp and for a moment, Saiph was happy to just breathe and try to get her bearings. Only, the smoky smell was getting heavier and when she opened her eyes, the air hazed and shimmered as wisps and puffs of smoke filled the air. And with the smoke came the sounds of… music? It sounded like the type you’d hear at a circus or travelling carnival, all tinny and calliope-esque. But over the music were the screams.
And the screams were getting closer awfully fast. Whatever was burning, it, and the people it was displacing, were getting closer.
Coughing as the smoke grew thicker and harsher, Saiph dropped to the ground, curling up to protect herself. From this position, she gently rolled her die and began to move.

Quote: Space 14: The ground is sticky. You land on this and immediately dip, as though you’ve stepped on a trampoline. Close inspection reveals that you are standing on an intricately woven web–and your shoes are stuck. And something is skittering just on the horizon.
Still coughing, Saiph landed on a space and felt herself stick. Again. Only, this time didn’t feel like the last. Not exactly. She took a careful step and felt the ground under her dip. It almost felt like a monkey bridge. Nothing seemed to be trying to burn or drown her, so she allowed herself a moment to look around and take in her surroundings.
Only to realize that the ground under her looked alarmingly spider-webby. Glancing up, she thought she saw something skittering in the distance. Oh no. No, no, nope, ******** this, ******** that.
Absolutely the ******** not. Moving quickly, Saiph rolled the dice and began running even as she snatched the die up from where it had landed.

Quote: Space 20: The end; once you have arrived here you are free to leave. You will see be basked in the glow of a beautiful, opalescent aura that will take you back home. If you arrived with a guest, you can leave without them or choose to stay until they make it to the end as well. When you arrive back in Destiny City, you may choose to keep the six sided die–if nothing else, it’s pretty! Though, it doesn’t seem to have any magical qualities, that might be for the best.
As she ran along the path, Saiph thought that she must have rolled exceptionally well. When she stopped, it wasn’t because her feet were stuck. She wasn’t trapped. It was due to the gorgeous opalescent glow right in front of her. She stared for a moment, wondering how anything so pretty could exist in this awful place. And it didn’t feel creepy like the rest of the squares had, either. Eyeing the glow, Saiph inhaled deeply. Whatever was going on, clearly she had to walk through that glow.
So she did. And nearly fell over from the relief of seeing the same dingy street she’d been on when she found the die. Powering down almost immediately, she decided that someone else could patrol tonight. She was ******** going home now. Shoving the dice into her pocket, she muttered to herself that she would figure it out later.
