Sailor Bacchus had spent most of the night storming around the neighborhood in which he’d found that bizarre die in search of whoever left something like that just lying around. If there was a logical part of him that wanted to remind him of the slimness of the odds that they were still around, he ignored it. Whatever way in which he was going to injure them, they had it coming. He wouldn’t kill them of course, but he would definitely make sure their evening was as unpleasant as they’d made his. He wasn’t in any hurry to expose part of their skeleton, but he was sure that he could find some way to terrorize them if he gave it enough thought.

Pulling out the obnoxious cube that had started the trouble, he stared at it intently. Despite his scrutiny, the wooden die showed little interest in revealing its secrets and pointing the way toward its creator.

Perhaps the opposite of Bacchus' night, Addy's had been fabulous. The bars had been kind to her tonight and she had been purchased multiple shots by one particular hopeful suitor that swore he could keep up. The lie detector test determined that was a lie as his friends carried his limp body out of the bar while he tried, with little success, to pass on his number.

That number was never going in her phone, but she had patted him on the head like a good little puppy and thanked him for the drinks.

The world had an absurdly low frame rate tonight. Probably unrelated.

What mattered most, certainly more than the fact that the world was lagging, was the purpose of her quest. The object of her desire. The craving that had lead her from the relative safety of the bar into the dark, unknowable night.

Tacos.

The best place in town for a late night taco binge was just a block or so down. Neon lights shown like a guiding star and her mouth watered as she caught the scent of the restaurant. Soon.

Addy almost didn't even notice the Slenderman sized menace scowling at the object in his hand.

"OH! Bacchus! Just in time! Want to get some tac-OH ******** startled shriek escaped from her lips as something caught under the flat heel of her Demonia, sending her tumbling onto the pavement. The offending object skittered a few feet away, each bounce making her stomach drop. Something felt wrong. Did the street look different?

"Bacchus?"

The sound of his name returned Bacchus’ attention to the world around him, “Oh hey Add- DON’T TOUCH THAT!” True, she wasn’t exactly reaching for it, but it might have the same effect through a shoe. With a few quick strides he got close enough to snatch it up. Maybe he’d never actually gotten out of this cattle’s a*****e. Could he have been carrying it around with him? The realm of possibility hadn’t been particularly hospitable to him lately, after all.

“I just got out of this place and it ******** sucks.” The senshi held out the die she’d tripped on. “This is the only way out and I’m sure that whoever did this is HAVING A HUGE ******** LAUGH ABOUT THIS RIGHT NOW.”

Huffing softly, he rolled his own die. “This place is ******** stupid and you might get attacked by little flying assholes or look like you’re rotting but it doesn’t stick.”

The world continued to spin around her as she took his hand and scrambled to her feet with a drunken stumble. Addy caught herself and brushed off her skirt as she looked around, taking in the scene. Squares and dice and according to Bacchus, they had to roll to escape...But escape was possible. He had done it already, right? So there was a way out of...whatever this was.

"Did I REALLY just get ******** JUMANJIED?" She hissed, glaring at the glowing cube in her hand. His description certainly called the old movie to mind what with the flying assholes and strange illusions. While still angry, she filed it away to pop some gummies and throw the movie on some time soon. It was a classic.

Pulling out her phone, she took a few pictures of the squares and attempted to get the platform, but when she reviewed them there was nothing. Just photos of an empty void. Before she could turn to Bacchus and comment she felt a chill run down her spine.

Hands. Dozens of hands...But when she looked back nothing was there. The force of them pushed her forward and even though she dug in her heels and tried to fight them, it did no good.

"Something is shoving me. What...Do you see anything?" Her hand reached out for Bacchus but before she could make any contact, she was gone. Through the first space and into the second before the force simply vanished.

"What in the hell was that?" She screamed as she looked around and back at Bacchus. "I couldn't fight it, it was so strong, it-oof!" Addy exclaimed again as a force, more solid this time, shoved her back toward the first space. She slammed face first into the invisible wall in front of her and whipped around, but once again, she was alone. Reaching out a hand, she placed it on the invisible wall in front of her and ran her fingers along it. This was beyond annoying but...also kind of cool. She would definitely feel that nose pain once the reality of sobriety kicked in.

"Okay, okay, ********. I'll play the stupid game!" She called out to open air before rolling her di again.

“Juma-WAIT? This happens often enough that you people have a NAME for it?” He would have to have a chat with Tempesti about why she’d neglected to mention this during her monologue about the city and its dangers but for the moment the other senshi was out of bitching range so he would have to wait. “Did it punch you? It punched me too. It’s an a*****e who is TOO AFRAID TO SHOW ITSELF!” He shouted into the surrounding darkness before a pungent smell interrupted his tirade. Once again, its ability to create fear through olfactory terrorism fell short. “Do you really think I haven’t smelled worse than this? TRY HARDER.” He held his arms out as he shouted, inviting it to take him up on his challenge.

With luck, maybe continued mockery would be enough to draw the p***k out for a proper fight. He scowled at the shape sliding through the dark, kicking at the pale hand that tried a bit too hard to get a grip on his ankle. a*****e.

Huffing, he cast his die once more.

For a brief moment, Addy stared at him incredulously. Was he...Was he still in character? Now that she thought of it, she never got around to asking what he was cosplaying. She decided that for now, escaping whatever the ******** this was would be the best use of her time and she would question him on his dedication to method acting after.

"It shoved my face into this stupid invisible barrier," she grumbled, rubbing her nose. "Don't think it broke anything though." At least she didn't have to reset a nose tonight. Yet. "So I guess it's just WEAK and INCOMPENTENT," she yelled out at their invisible tormentor.

The world still spun around her and she steadied herself against the invisible wall before looking down. Three. Okay.

Stepping forward, she moved through the square Bacchus was in and she held her nose, watching with dismay as a pasty white hand crawled in and out of the darkness beside her.

"Is that...Smell you?" she asked, her voice attempting to hide her disgust as she moved into the final square. "You should see a doctor."

The dog barking was instantaneous and overwhelming. Suddenly she was five again being chased through the park by an off-leash dog. Hot, moist breath played at the back of her neck and the sound was so loud her ears were ringing. Was that it just beyond the shadows that surrounded them? Was it poised to pounce? It sounded ********," she whispered as she looked around for the offending animal. It sounded like it was right behind her, but the only thing there was Bacchus in his stink chamber.

Hands shaking, she quickly rolled her di so that she could scramble out of there before she had to find out if the dog was as real as whatever had shoved her.

With a glance over his shoulder as he sprang into his next space, Sailor Bacchus shouted a warning, “It’ll go away if you leave the square, but if you’re not fast it’ll still probably bite you on the a**.”

He felt the adrenaline rise within him at the sound of those bloody metallic threads again, the memory of their sting still smarting on his arms. Couldn’t even use his magic on the ******** because how do you make a set of angry wires get sloppy?

“The ******** strings again? GET A NEW ACT you ******** TIT.” He tossed the die irritably in a hurry to leave the square and maybe find something he could actually punch.

The di skipped and bounced, bumping up against an invisible wall before coming to a halt on one. Addy scooped it up and looked down the long walkway ahead of her as she practically teleported into the sixth space. One single space with so many more ahead of her. Inside her new prison was Bacchus yelling about how this was old material and she felt some comfort in that. He had experienced this particular torture before and came out on the other side. It definitely helped that the barking had ceased almost immediately. Her chest rose and fell slowly with a deep, calming breath.

There were no dogs, even if she could still hear the vicious growls echoing in her mind. She would survive this just as she had every other strange thing she had encountered since returning to Destiny City. Best of all, she wasn’t alone. Perhaps she didn’t know Bacchus very well and he seemed to be perpetually in the same cosplay, but it looked like he washed it, at least. She’d been stuck with weirder in cramped places in San Fran.
“So do you have any idea what the ******** this place is? Some trickster god’s pocket dimension? Glitch in the matrix?”
The first string whizzed by her head faster than she could recognize and she jumped at the strange sound as it sang its shrill song right into her ear. It was quickly followed by another and another as they strung up all around her, slowly closing her into her corner of the square. No, thank you.
With a huff, she knelt down and dropped her die, letting it roll just at her feet.

“Dammit, what now? Is it the little flying ********> Bacchus remembered the scratchy ******** with a distinctly unpleasant expression on his face. He didn’t remember their screeching being quite so shitty, maybe he hadn’t had indulged quite as much before the last time.
“A what in the what? I don’t know what that is. Or what this is. I just know that SOME a*****e IS PROBABLY LISTENING!” He angrily raised his right hand, palm toward his face, clearly intending to insult whoever he was addressing.

Rubbing his temples he muttered, “Rootless shithead.” A few more hissed curses escaped him as he tossed his die one more time.

Going back to San Francisco was more and more appealing the longer she was in Destiny City. At least if she encountered a strange board game there, it was performance art put on by some eccentric and not some inter-dimensional bullshit with ghost dogs and wires and whatever the ******** she'd smelled earlier. Maybe Bacchus' giardia.

"A glitch in the...Have you never seen The Matrix?" she asked, incredulous, "Nevermind, know what? Doesn't matter right now. Keep rolling. We just have to keep rolling."

Addy reached out for the di and winced as a razor sharp wire sliced into the tip of her finger. She hadn't seen it at first but now that a drop of her blood clung to the string, she hissed at it and pressed down on the wound with another finger to help stop the blood flow. That was a later problem.

More carefully this time, she reached for the di and moved forward.

Finally, a better roll! She moved ahead five spaces, but her happiness was short lived. The sound of leathery wings flapping through the air caught her off guard and she looked up, only to see a wriggling mass of black swooping down at her, screeching and clawing as it did before circling and preparing for round ********. BATS? REALLY?" She shrieked as she swatted them away from her face.

Was she going to need a magical rabies shot? She wanted out before she learned the hard way. Kneeling down and pulling her jacket up above her head as a shield, she rolled.

"What happens when we make it to the end?"

“I haven’t seen any matrices since I got here and I don’t know what a glitch is but I feel like that’s something you can explain later.” Bacchus made a face, humans were weird and he was pretty sure that he would be trying to figure this s**t out for as long as it was on this planet.

“Wait, the flap-shits are over there? Then what the ******** was I talking to? I swear this ROT BALLED SPORE ******** is-” Wait, that was a new sound. A few new sounds. It had been centuries since he’d last smelled the tang of the sea and as far as he could tell Destiny City wasn’t anywhere near whatever oceans Earth had. One of this place’s tricks, even if it came with a tinge of nostalgia. “Smells like…seawater over here and-”

Some distant voice swallowed his own in a melody at once sweet and crushing, the tune as old as he was.

“We get out.”

"Flap shits?" Addy questioned incredulously as she picked up her di and looked back at Bacchus.

"DUDE, WHAT THE ********?" she cried out, choking on her laughter as she scurried forward, not able to move away fast enough, "You're ENJOYING this?"

The laugh was desperately needed and it broke the tension and fear in her as she moved forward. "Keep this guy away from Monopoly, goddamn."

The flapping of wings echoed through her new square as more bats swooped and screeched. Small fangs sunk into her skin and Addy found herself feeling ice cold and utterly exhausted. A chill ran down her spine as her whole body began to shiver and her teeth chatter. It hurt more than she had imagined.

Unable to form words from how hard her teeth chattered together, she simply rolled her di once more.

“I don’t know what they’re called, they scratched me up good last time though.”

Before he could clarify further, he realized that his other predicament was apparently visible from the other squares.

“Hey, don’t blame me for this! Blame whatever debauchee made this place!” In that moment he truly believed that he was well within his right to accuse someone of debauchery. They could have at least bought him a drink first. Something adjacent to self-consciousness rose within him alongside the indignant rage that had lingered since he’d gotten stuck here the first time. It was less than ideal for Addy to see the effect that particular space had on him, but as far as he was concerned she should reserve her judgment for the unseen pervert.

“What is Monopoly?” He briefly wondered if it had something to do with the “glitching” matrix she’d mentioned. The sensation of his feet sticking to the bouncy surface beneath him distracted him from this possibly irrelevant train of thought. Was this…a spiderweb? He squinted slightly at the elegantly woven net in which he was currently entangled. As much as he loved those eight-legged critters, he was less than eager to find himself in the stomach of one large enough to create something like this, no matter how interested he was in actually seeing the thing. With a quick flick of his wrist, the die rolled, ready to take him to his next source of aggravation.

Eager to flee the onslaught of bat after bat sinking their razor sharp fangs into every inch of exposed flesh they could find, Addy scooped up the die and ran out of the square, swatting her assailants away, teeth audibly slamming together. Five. Okay. Wait! Five was the end!

Eager to escape, she ran to the end, stumbling a little as she did. The chill slowly left her body as she was bathed in a beautiful opalescent light. Addy's eyes widened as she watched the bleeding bite marks slowly close and disappear as if they had never even been there.

"What the ********?" she whispered under her breath before looking up at Bacchus. No way was she leaving him here alone.

"I'm definitely blaming you," she called out from the victory square with a laugh.

"What do you MEAN what is Monopoly? Dude, break character. We are literally in a nightmare hell dimension. Stop acting!"

The fact that the bloody thing had the courtesy to deposit him at the end of its little game came as more than a little bit of a surprise.

“Why would I know what Monopoly is? I just got here, do you expect me to know everything you have? And besides, if I was acting you’d be far more entertained than you are.” His tone was indignant, he could hardly imagine that she’d had an immediate grasp on the planet when she arrived. Granted, she was probably born here but that made it even less likely. “Anyway, you can explain all of that to me once we get out of this midden heap.”

With a somewhat dramatic gesture, he followed her into the light that he knew would carry them back to the city.

“Ugh.”

His lip curled into a disdainful sneer as the energy signature of some boring Chaos ******** prickled at the back of his mind. “There’s some Chaos sucking lickspittle hanging around and for some reason, looking like this makes them want to fight me more.” As much as he’d love to hand out a beating to one of those little gobshites, he had other plans for his night and would much prefer amusements beyond what any of them had to offer.

Allowing his true appearance to melt away, Bacchus rolled his shoulders as the magic replaced him with just another human.
