Sailor Tempesti had never seen anything quite like the pretty little die lying on the ground. It had a pull to it, almost magnetic its power as she plucked it from its resting place. Hindsight, of course, reminded her of the virtues of caution. Despite the frequency of its admonitions she never seemed to fully grasp the lesson, as the rapidly descending darkness confirmed. Stopping in her tracks, she struggled to get her bearings in the strange void. It didn’t feel quite like Chaos. Or like that space…out there.

She took several deep breaths as her eyes adjusted. This was probably one of those anomalies that came with living in Destiny City. Something like that half-finished carnival or the horrible chickens that appeared from nowhere. The senshi half-expected the vicious poultry to come screaming in at the thought. She strode forward, undue confidence halted by her body’s impact against some invisible wall. “Ow… OK, alright. That would have been too easy.”

Briefly comparing the markings on her troublesome die to the path ahead, she could only draw one conclusion. She needed to roll.

Under normal circumstances Tempesti wouldn’t find the sound of a dog unsettling. Even an angry dog was something she could grasp, and not something she would particularly fear if it wasn’t directly on top of her. But if what growled in the dark was a dog, it was huge. And invisible. That was a problem. Being unable to see the potentially hungry canine presented a uniquely unpleasant challenge. Hurriedly casting the die, she stole several backward glances as she hastened out of its territory.

Soft pressure sliding across the top of her boot snapped Tempesti’s attention from the maybe-dog behind her to the square in which she found herself. She pulled out her phone and shined its light onto the ground at her feet.

Snakes.

Her initial surprise that there could be anything like a dog living here only intensified at the sight of the reptiles slithering about. The space was magical, that much was clear, but she couldn’t help but wonder how they managed to remain so lively in the cool darkness. She didn’t know enough about snakes to recognize which were venomous, and made a mental note to find out once she managed to escape this place. It seemed like a helpful skill to cultivate, even if she never found herself facing them in a scenario like this again.

A soft hiss rose like a warning from the writhing cluster as she gingerly stepped forward. “Easy…easy…I’m just trying to get out of your hair.” She knew that whatever she said was lost on them, but the sound of her own voice was a bit of reassurance she barely recognized that she needed.

Stepping into the square the die had chosen for her, Tempesti was surprised to feel the ground shifting beneath her feet. The strange odor that permeated the space only felt like a natural accompaniment to the apparent muddiness of the ground. Some part of her felt a twinge of less than practical distress alongside the natural concern for her own survival at the realization that the white of her skirt was sinking into the muck with the rest of her. The die had gotten her out of the earlier places, hopefully it would be enough to pull her loose.

Her relief at getting out of the mud was tempered somewhat by the realization that she was standing in what looked like…an enormous spiderweb. Aside from a senshi of harpies stuck where she stood, the web was otherwise unoccupied and Tempesti wasn’t exactly looking to make friends with a spider capable of spinning a web this size. As she attempted to pull herself free, she froze. Something was skittering in the dark. Rolling the die and hoping for the best had to continue to be her go-to strategy. The platform at the end of the path wasn’t too far away, hopefully she’d be out with a few more rolls.

Why is the floor in this place so unreliable? It didn’t exactly come as a surprise when the square beneath Sailor Tempesti cracked, sending her into an unexpectedly deep pool of icy water. With a series of sputtering gasps, she managed to pull herself up alongside a chunk of floating ice. She would definitely have to try to figure out how places like this worked. If she could, anyway. Tossing the die, she waited for its roll to take effect.

Almost there! Hopefully that platform would mean the end of this…incident and a quick way out. Maybe she was moving too quickly or maybe whoever made this place wanted to penalize excitability, but explanations were irrelevant when compared to the immediacy of the floor collapsing beneath her. Through what felt like sheer luck, she managed to catch herself on the ledge of this crumbling mess of a…alternate dimension maybe?

“Storm-Swift Flight!”

The harpies came at her call, buffeting her upward and allowing her just enough of a boost to haul herself up onto the final platform. Light surrounded her, and within seconds she stood on the quiet, moonlit sidewalk.
