Even through her mask and the darkness of the forest, you could see the cross expression on Hyela's face. She had had quite enough of this summer heat and was at her wit's end. She was planning out her fall and winter remedies and tinctures, and had started making her rounds where she knew the tender, cold-weather herbs grew. She was excited to see signs of sprouts a couple weeks ago, but was wholly disappointed when the returning heat withered them all. She looked now at a crumpled, lifeless patch of vegetation, frowning at it.

“Hot for too long,” grumbled the mare, her voice gravelly and jagged - almost forced, as if it was an effort to push the air from her lungs. She sounded very old, though she didn't look it. “Hopefully not much longer...the bones will know.”

She turned her gaze away from the deceased patch of herbs with a sigh and continued along her path. She was deep in the woods, on a very narrow but well-worn trail. As she continued along, every now and then another path would branch off to the left or right, but she stayed her course until finally she took an absent-minded turn to the left, continued a few hundred feet, then left the path to approach the foot of a large tree. She bent her neck down and sniffed a few times before reaching her hoof out to dig at a spot nestled between the thick and twisted roots of the tree. She soon unearthed a small collection of bones. Arranging them in a pile, she appeared to lean down and whisper to the bones. Even if you were standing right beside her, you'd be hard pressed to understand what she was saying, but she suddenly stopped, lifted her head, and gently kicked the bones so that they scattered, but not too far. She stared silently at the bones for a few minutes, nudging one with her hoof every now and then, then finally shook her head.

“Pfff, too much longer.” Disappointed yet again, she kicked the bones back into the hole where she had retrieved them from – not so gently this time – covered them back up with dirt and leaves, and returned to her trail. “Hot for too long,” she growled again. Hyela loved her forest, and had no plans on ever leaving, but the trees are so dense, there is no relief from the wind in the heat of summer. She felt she was baking, and needed some kind of relief. “Perhaps the pool...” she mumbled as she continued grumpily along her path.

It burned.

The rays of sun light that sliced through the shadows of the dense forest and caught her eyes burned the mare, who winced and turned her face away from the light. The light and brightness of her eyes didn't hold enough pigment to filter the bite of the bright.

She needed to go deeper into the forest, her swamp was too bright, too warm in this second round of heat. The promise of cooler temperatures hadn't lasted long enough before the blasting heat returned, which meant she couldn't return home yet.

She deeply missed her swamp. Her plans to return had been spoiled, she felt safest there; especially now that her protective mask had been broken. That was her fault, in her grief of heartache, she had tossed it and well, consequences were a very real thing.

She rarely left the safety of her swamp or deepest parts of the forest, so she hasn't ran into anyone else to possibly trade with for a repair or replacement.

Finding peace as the shadows thickened, her eyes were quick to scan as she wandered towards a pond, it would be cooler there. With no breeze in the thickness of the forest, even her lighter colored coat was of no use. Heat simply baked the air around them.

Her ears pricked at the sound of another's movements; she paused and scented the air, a stranger for sure but yet the scent wasn't completely unfamiliar. Hanako was sure she'd caught it here and there as she traveled through the shadows of the forest through the years.

She was hesitant, not all who wandered the shadows were safe or friendly, she flicked her tail. But she couldn't deny that it would be nice to have someone else to talk to, even if she might have to flee.

Hopefully if she did, she knew the forest better than the other.

She continued towards the ponds, "Let's see what the gods have in store", she whispered to herself.

Hyela knew the forest probably better than anybody. Her unusually long life had given her extra time to explore, and indeed even make her own system of trails through the woods. She knew that others had found her paths and used them from time to time, but there were some that were still a secret to her alone. Her current path that led away from her secretly stashed bones was one such trail. It appeared to come to a sudden end, blocked by a wall of thick, brambly hedges. But instead of halting, the shadowy mare ducked within the shrub so quickly and nimbly it looked as if she disappeared. She popped out suddenly on the other side and let out a chilling shriek as she sighted the purple mare on the trail in front of her. The heat must have been so overwhelming it dulled her senses, because Hyela was always aware of others this deep in the wood, and she hadn't heard or smelled this mare at all. “Take heed, you fool!” she shouted. Hyela was extremely solitary and would often go several months between seeing another Soquili. As such, she often spoke to herself, sometimes in entire conversations. This shout had been directed towards herself, not at the stranger in front of her, though nobody would have really been able to tell unless they were familiar with Hyela's strange ways.
She shook her head to calm herself, and slowly eyed the mare up and down. The stranger's hooves, tail, and eyes stood out to Hyela first, and she grumbled to herself, “deer folk, with the sun in her eyes.” Hyela knew that the Cerynei were not typically evil, but also knew there were exceptions. Was this mare one of those exceptions? Her stance wasn't threatening or confrontational, and she seemed as if she had known Hyela was coming. “She pays more attention than you,” she said to herself.

Deciding that this stranger was safe – for now – Hyela cocked her head to the side and cracked a lopsided grin at the stranger, exhaled heavily through her nostrils, and again said “hot for too long. And too much longer still.” Her odd grin turned suddenly to a frown as she shook her head at the heat. Sighing, she walked right past the stranger towards the pond, mumbling “perhaps the pool...”

Jumping out of her skin did not seem to accurately describe the young mares response to the sudden appearance of the darker mare.

She hadn't been expecting the sudden appearance the scent hadn't seemed that strong.

Hanako took a few moments to catch the breath that had been stolen right from her chest, her heart thudded while she tried to even herself out.

She wasn't one that was generally easily spooked but this mare had surely just stolen years from her life. At the other mares outburst, Hanako's ears twitched as she strained to listen, was there another lurking? Someone dangerous??

She didn't hear anything else but the other mares, her head tilted slightly, was she referring to her? She blinked a few times "deer folk, with the sun in her eyes" she heard, she'd never heard of herself being described in such a fashion. It wasn't necessarily wrong but definitely a different way to think of it.

Hanako returned a skittish half smile at the other mare, she had heard stories of the hippogriffs but this was her first encounter with one, but at the mares following words, she sighed and nodded.

"Indeed too hot, far to long.." she responded, still baffled if the other mare was even talking to her.

But they both seemed to be interested in the pond, so Hanako carefully followed at a slight distance.

She nodded a return of the mare's half-smile and ignored her uneasiness. Hyela was used to this, strangers always seemed to find her a bit baffling and confusing, approaching her with caution. She cared not, though, and went about her life just being who she was.

She approached the edge of the pool and dipped her hoof in. Closing her eyes blissfully, she let out a sort of half-sigh, half-moan. Turning to look at the stranger, she croaked “the pool is cool!” She let out a cackle at her little rhyme. “Bones say more weeks like this. Far, far too long,” she said, agreeing with the mare. She turned back to face the pond as she began wading in. “Bones are always right.”

Thigh-deep in the water now, Hyela turned to face the stranger. “Come, come, is quite cool. Better in the pool, it is.” She cocked her head to the side, still sensing the mare's uneasiness, and sighed. “Hyela. Bonesinger.” She bowed her head slightly, her very weak attempt at comforting the stranger. “Fear not. This is my wood, you are safe. Made that path, I did. Will not hurt you, so long as you return the favor.” She didn't always explain herself to strangers. She honestly wasn't even that fond of others, or in making friends. Most of the time, she was perfectly content to let strangers be addled by her oddness and baffled by her behavior, ensuring they stayed far away from her. But every now and then, she felt just a little lonely and would make a temporary friend. Her encounters were brief, and usually not repeated. This mare seemed gentle enough, and her features were interesting to Hyela, and she just happened to be here at the pond at the same time, so she got to have the pleasure of Hyela's softer side, if you could call it that.

Hanako was very curious about these bones that the dark mare kept referring to but wasnt sure that asking about them would be worth the answer.

Sometimes questions lead to answers that were honestly none of your business and Hanako felt that, that mindset had kept her from some dangerous situations before. Not that she had the best social skills in the first place, she did her best not to ruffle someone more dangerous than herself feathers.

As if Hanako was dangerous at all, that thought alone was a laugh.

"Oh thank the gods..." she replied when the mare spoke of cool waters. She swore the heat was choking the air around her and that sweet cool relief was truly what she sought. But before the Cerynei joined her in the inviting waters, she used her hoof to dig into the mud, mixing up a thick paste of it, she then lowered her head and used said mud to build a mask slightly around her eyes. It wasnt perfect but it would help block any sunlight better than the nothing she had before.

Once her task was complete and she had no shame in what she looked like at the moment, sometimes beauty must fall second to what was necessary. She followed the Hippogriff mares suit and gave a nod of her head in greeting as she paused chest deep in the water, it was such a refreshing moment. "Hanako, simply Hanako.." She didnt often even use the lady part of her name, honestly what lady lived in the shadows of the swamp? Her parents mustve had a good laugh at that, not that she really remembered them.

Hyela bent her knees, sinking a little lower into the water, closing her eyes and letting out a rattling sigh. She cracked one eye open and glanced at the mare when she bent down to rub the mud on her eyes. Unusual, she thought, but she was certainly not one to call things strange. She closed her eye again, letting out another jagged sigh, feeling goosebumps crawl across her skin as the coolness of the water sank in. When the mare introduced herself, she opened both eyes again and turned to face her more directly.

“Well met, Hanako.” She stared at her new acquaintance in silence for a couple minutes, her head slightly tilted to the side, then bluntly said, “why the mud?” While she wasn't one to judge, she did want to understand. She had never seen anybody do this before and didn't comprehend why the mare had done it. She always liked to learn more, especially about what the earth had to offer. While she knew much about herbs and remedies, she was wondering if the mud had something to offer that she was missing. She eagerly awaited the mare's answer, suddenly a rapt and attentive student.

RainbowfiedZombabe👾 — 4:15 PM
She should have known the question was going to come, possibly anyways as it wasnt a very common thing for one to do when covering their face and around their eyes in almost what could be discribed as mud goggles.

She let out a sheepish sigh before she tilted her head up towards the bits of sunlight that sliced through the trees around them, cascading over the pond like a rain shower of sunlight. "The sun hurts my eyes, burns them. I try to stick to the shadows but that's not always possible to do though. I had a mask that kept them protected during the day but it was broken and I don't meet others often enough to possibly trade for a replacement. The glow doesn't help the situation much but without it my eyes are almost void of any color, so they are extremely sensitive to the light..But oddly enough not moonlight." That had always been something that puzzled her, the fact that even the brightest moons caused her no pain at all, though also made her linger longer into the night.

Hyela chuckled a bit at her earlier prophecy. “Ah, the sun in your eyes.” She croaked another laugh and nodded her head. “Indeed, too bright outside of the forest.” Hyela preferred to stay in the shadows as well, deep in her tunnels and trails. She considered the mare for a moment, taking note of the size and shape of her face. At the mention of a mask, Hyela ran a quick inventory of her bone collection in her mind. She knew there had to be a Cerynei-shaped skull laying around that might suffice for a mask for this mare. Though the reveled in her solitude, Hyela was not cold or unkind. And she certainly had no shortage of bones. Though they all had meaning and purpose, that did not mean that she couldn't part with one every now and then, for a worthy cause.

“Have something for you, I may. A mask of sorts, though too macabre for you, it might be.” She started wading out of the pond, the water rolling off in beads against her feathery wings and tail. She flapped her wings once to shake off any excess water, and turned back to face Hanako in the pond. “If you have time, home is not far. Lots of bones there for you to consider. Would be willing to share.” She nodded enthusiastically, motioning over her shoulder.

[WC: 230]

RainbowfiedZombabe👾 — 5:23 PM
Hanako didnt have an issue with what others might consider macabre, or anything strange. When you dwelled in the shadows, your view on what was normal was generally rather askew. She knew she had nothing on Hyela when it came to the realm of the shadows, but she didnt question it or the mare, she didnt pick up on any questioning vibes or tells that she was up to no good.

"I have time." She nodded, she thought fondly of the ponds cool embrace before she knew her need for protection for her eyes was a much more important need than to be cool. Watching the water droplets fly from the mares wings, she paused over a brief feeling of jealousy before she shook her own coat. "But perhaps Hyela would be interested in a trade? I tend to a rare swamp flower, Helonias bullata. Its more common name is Swamp pink. A cousin to my own buds.." She looked to the flowers that grew in her mane. "I'd be happy to trade for a bone." she followed after Hyela, for a second the idea of following a stranger home didnt seem like a smart move, but again she had no cause to question the other mares intentions other than what she said them to be.

Nori Ishida — 5:36 PM
Hyela cracked her odd grin as the mare offered a trade. “A good and fair trade. An osteomancer, but also an herbalist, I am. Use lots of flowers and plants for remedies, so a good and fair trade.” She gestured to a barely visible trail at the edge of the pond. “Not far, just through here.” Hyela moved quickly along the trail, suddenly taking a turn here and there onto smaller and narrower trails. Eventually they were on a very tight, but very well worn trail that again seemed to come to a dead end. But Hyela suddenly disappeared behind a giant boulder, and her voice could be heard from the other side as she said “just through here, you'll see.”

The other side of the boulder opened up to a large circular area clear of any trees. The forest was so old and dense, however, that the canopies extended over the clearing, keeping Hyela's home nice and shady, the way she liked it. The place was absolutely littered with piles upon piles of bones, bowls and small piles of ash, rows and stacks of jars full of unknown liquids and dried herbs, and at the center, a massive fire pit full of gently smoldering logs. It wasn't filthy, but it certainly wasn't neat and tidy. Hyela watched Hanako as she entered the clearing, always interested in other's first impressions of her home. She gestured to a pile of bones across the clearing, past the fire pit. “skulls over there. One to fit you, there is sure to be.”

[WC: 259]

RainbowfiedZombabe👾 — 8:53 PM
Hanako's eyes drank in the sight before her, her own little swampy glade wasn't exactly pristine but more full of things for her plants and herbs.

"I like it.." she said with an approving nod of her head. She took the mares cues and headed towards the pile of bones that she had been directed to.

She was very careful as she nosed through to the pile of skulls, until it came to view, it looked almost like the brow bone of a medium sized alligator skull.

It was perfect.

She had a few gators in her swamp that she tensed to like pets. This fit her and her swamp beautifully. She carefully picked it up and placed it on her back for the moment, twisting her head, the flowers that grew in her mane stretched out to her. Carefully she snipped a few of the flowers and brought them to Helya, carefully placing them at the mares feet.

" Find my swamp, I'm sure you'll have no troubles and you can have clippings from the swamp pink too" she turned and picked up the skull, slipping it on, it sat perfectly; shielding her eyes from the sunlight. "It's been a great pleasure meeting you Hyela"

Hyela watched Hanako as she sifted through the pile of skulls and finally found the perfect one. When Hanako placed the flowers at her feet, she bent down to sniff them, nudging them with her hoof and inspecting the shape and parts of the plant, fascinated with this new species. She lifted her head again, grinning at her most recent temporary friend. Perhaps she would take the mare's invitation to visit her swamp and she could be more than a temporary friend.

When she slipped the gator skull onto her face, Hyela practically beamed. It was an excellent look, and appeared to be the perfect solution to Hanako's sensitive eyes. She bowed her head one last time as the mare departed. “A pleasure as well, Hanako.”
