The first thing that Jack saw upon coming home from a very hard night of looking around at things to buy in the shops that he could walk to was the fact that his door was unlocked. That was highly unusual, especially for such a paranoid person as his mother. While they no longer kept a doorman, his mother was very insistent upon the house being locked up as tightly as possible and he was sure that he had locked the door upon leaving.

The second was when he cautiously made his way inside of the house and didn't hear anything. Usually his mother would call out when she heard the door open to confirm that it was him coming home, but there was only silence.

The third, when he went to the main living room he noticed a figure in dark clothing there standing over... something. And from what he could tell in the few quick moments that his brain had to register what was going on, it seemed the more primal part of it had already recognized the person as an Agent. His hair stood on edge, a dread-filled feeling filled the pit of his stomach.

Had they finally gone after him for not completing his duties? It had been a while since he last powered up AND actually drained energy. The last few times he had gone out as Versailles he had really just talked to those in Order and there was no draining done.

Someone had finally been sent to collect.

Then he realized that the Agent had looked at him, and then something to the side of the agent, and that was when Jack realized the 4th thing. His mother's body on the ground. Unmoving. Not even seemingly breathing.

And as selfish as his mother was, that didn't mean they didn't love each other, and when he saw his mother's body something in him took over. Whether it was rage at this entire situation or grief or wanting revenge, he managed to power up, find the nearest pot that he could, swung it upwards and before he could even register that the Agent was saying something like "Wait I didn-" Versailles hit the Agent in the head who also fell over.

For a few moments the adrenaline still ran through Versailles before it left him and absolute horror and panic now flowed through him. He had killed an Agent.

Whether this was true or not was not something he checked up on. Instead he did the first thing he thought of and teleported away from his house into an isolate open field that he had once used for conversing with someone from Order and as soon as he could tell that he was now in a different location, hit the ground hard.

S***. There's no way they'll take me back now. I don't want to be in this. I DON'T WANT TO BE A PART OF THE NEGAVERSE! He thought to himself, desperately wishing that he could get out of here, out of the Negaverse, that he wasn't a bad person! He didn't want to be! He didn't want to be draining people and being on the side that wanted to destroy the planet and that he wouldn't even be able to see his Homeworld! "If there's anyone out there that can help, PLEASE HELP ME!" He yelled though doubtful that anyone would answer, feeling tears rolling down his face. He wanted out!

For a long moment, Versailles was cloaked in an unwavering stillness. The night was cloaked in it, tense and frozen as if in the space between then and now.

There were too many stars in the sky–stars, and whatever else lurked there–so the tiny little comet blazing across the galaxy didn’t seem like much of anything until the rainbow trail behind it burned a little brighter. A little bigger.

And then, it flickered from sight–and Cosmos herself stood before him.

Tall, pale, nearly as white as her hair or bodice, with shadows on her face that made her look like cool marble. She stood tall, rigid, and observed him like he was something foreign.

She didn’t smile, and though her presence was almost clinical, it was not even slightly unkind.

The tears, maybe, softened something in her eyes.

“Your starseed is very loud. It echoed all the way to the Cauldron. You want the Chaos gone that badly?”

Versailles couldn't help but be distracted when the figure, Cosmos appeared in front of him. She almost seemed to light up the entire area just by being there.

He opened his mouth to say something, and then closed it again. He could still feel tears down his face, images of his mother still flashed through his mind, keeping him too sad to stop altogether.

And after a moment, he nodded. "Yes-yes I do." He said. "I was recruited against my will and now things have..." He trailed off, not sure if he should explain as it might be too much, if she could already see what had happened to him, if he could even adequately describe how much he wanted to have the Chaos taken away.

"Please. Help me." It was the only words he could think of. She had come all this way, had shown her presence to him, did he need to do anything else? How much more did he have to prove that he no longer wanted any part of Chaos?

Cosmos regarded him calmly, and without any great emotions of her own. She had been here many times before, seen this many times before. Perhaps, because of his tears, her face softened. It was hard to tell when her expression was so stoic. Maybe it was just a trick of the light.

But, he had asked for help.

And she would oblige.

“I will help you purge the Chaos,” she assured, crossing the small distance between them. “But you may lose more than that. Clear your mind, breathe. Hold close to you whatever memories you can. This is a great strain upon your starseed. You will forget. Not everything, but some.”

She gave him a moment to think, to listen. To accept.

To prepare.

For a moment he was excited. It seemed that Cosmos had answered his pleas! But when he was told that he would lose memories, he was worried. Chaos memories of course could be completely erased. He didn't want to remember any of that.

Memories of his family, well his mother, and the way he enjoyed civilian life? That was what he wanted to keep. He couldn't just let his mother's memory be destroyed. Not by him, even if he knew that purification would be better in the long run.

He moved his hand to his chest, thought hard about his mother for a moment, everything that he could remember, and then moved his eyes towards Cosmos. "I'm ready."

A moment passed, because Cosmos had long ago learned that ready did not always mean ready, but just as she could not rush into things, neither could she delay them.

She could not allow time for his will to waver, or for the Negaverse to intervene.

With a final nod, she bowed her head just slightly. “Very well. Hold tight to those thoughts dearest to your heart.”

It didn’t always work like that. Sometimes, it didn’t matter how badly you wanted to remember something. Sometimes it just wasn’t enough.

If he couldn’t retain the memories he wanted, maybe it would be a blessing that he forgot he ever wanted them at all.

Cosmos did not waste time with hypotheticals. She raised one gentle hand and rested it over his chest, as much to soothe him as it was to be as close to his starseed as she could manage. And then, she pushed. A warmth spread through his chest, bathing his starseed in her light–chasing away the Chaos-tinged darkness that had long ago taken root.

When she put her hand to his chest, Versailles wondered for a moment what would happen. He hoped that it wouldn't be painful like it was when he was forcibly corrupted.

Instead it felt as though he was feeling a warmth move all through his body and the feeling of chaos slowly moved it's way out of his body and he could only feel the warmth, was this how Order always felt?

They had to. This was how it had always been, and for a moment he wondered why this sailor was here and what she was doing.

But it was over more quickly than his corrupted version would have thought. But he had lost those memories. Memories of being in the Negaverse. He was Versailles, he always had been, right?

He removed the doubt from his mind. Whatever had happened, he felt quite happy about it, but he didn't know why. "Thank you." She seemed to have been the one to give him... whatever had happened right now, though he wasn't sure why.

Unconsciously he moved his hand towards his hair, unsure of the reason, and could feel that it was quite short, like it should be. He wouldn't be able to stand it if it was long after all.

Cosmos looked no more tired now than when she first arrived, but her face was gentler. She withdrew her hand slowly, with unwavering grace.

“You don’t need to thank me. You made the right choice. I will always help those who are looking for the path.”

No matter how long it took them to find it. No starseed was meant to be coated in Chaos.

“Your starseed seems calmer,” he noted, but maybe he could feel it. It was no longer screaming to her. The Chaos had been burned away–completely.

“How are you feeling?”

Versailles thought it was a bit silly not to thank someone, but didn't say anything to the contrary. Instead he focused on what she had said. How was he feeling... he couldn't quite remember what had happened and why she was in front of him, but he could say that he felt much happier.

"Better... Happier... Like I was meant to be like this." He said, putting his hand to the middle of his chest, wondering if he should be feeling something different. It didn't hurt. He didn't feel cold. There now appeared to be a nice warmth radiating from within. "I..." was he supposed to be remembering feeling different? "I can't imagine not being this way." He said, this time with confidence.

"I'm good, I think, now. But-" He remembered something. Something to do with his mother? Did he need to see her? "I have to go check on someth-someone. But it feels like you saved me."

Cosmos’ eyes briefly flicked to his chest, as if her eyes had the means to see through flesh and bone, right into his starseed.

“You are as you should be,” he said softly, but with sound conviction.

Leaning against her staff, just slightly, she corrected him. “You saved yourself. I was but a tool to help you accomplish your goals. I will not hold you here. Go check on your someone. But be safe. Make time to rest. You will need time to get to know this new you. Don’t push too hard.”
