It was a typical close-to-the-end-of-summer—beginning-of-the-school-year day. Just warm and sunny enough to want to be done with school for the day, if only to enjoy the carefree life of a teenager. At least that's what Elga was thinking as she wandered down the hall to the lunchroom of Meadowview. While she didn't hate school, the weather was begging to be enjoyed elsewhere, and she wasn't quite ready for the summer to end. Unfortunately, school was required, and she begrudgingly complied. She was not looking forward to PE in the afternoon, but thankfully, the last class of the day was Music. As she sat down at a table closest to the window to look outside, she took out her meager lunch. A simple baloney and cheese sandwich with mustard and apple slices. It was meager, not so much because she was watching her weight, but more so because of what her family could afford at the moment. With a stay at home mother of currently 4 children and a father working in a factory downtown, money was tight.
Slowly, she opened her lunch pack and waited for her friends to arrive. With Algebra 2 and Chemistry out of the way for the day, she could only count down until Music class. Granted, it was only 2 days into the school year, but she was already dreading the homework that night. Her teachers didn't waste any time this year handing out assignments right away.
(I started as if they are all friends. If a problem, let me know and I'll revise. They could be acquaintance friends or one or two just meeting.)
