Welcome

Still very WIP, but I wanted to get started on this idea. Basically this is meant to be a version of the Alternian Empire from Homestuck, mostly focused on societal structure and the hemospectrum, reimagined as "soul colors" that are represented by a Dweller's eyes. Any suggestions are welcome! I'm not even totally sold on the name yet, it's just a quick translation of "inner rainbow" into Swahili.

History

Ndani is a relatively new colony, born from the ashes of a previous group that held some of the same beliefs, but with a very different societal structure. No one in the colony now remembers much about the previous colony aside from vague stories and rumors. What is generally known, is that, at some point in the past there was a major change in how things were run. Where once (supposedly) all Soul Colors were more or less equal, now they are segregated into rigid castes. Some Colors are more rare than others, some are almost extinct. The colony has also become much more warlike than it was at one point, aiming to take over and absorb other groups - forcing the newcomers to adopt the colony's society and beliefs.

General Information

Allowed Species: The colony consists of mainly Ma'ome, and these are the only species actually considered citizens, no matter how low or high class they are. Other species are allowed, but will always be ranked lower than Ma'ome. They have very specific Ranks they are allowed to hold, to serve the colony. One of the most important of these is the Rank of Lusus. For more information on this, see the post below detailing Life and Ranks in the Colony. For purposes of beliefs and religion, they are not believed to possess Souls like the Ma'ome have.

Colors of Fur and Eyes: There are no restrictions on fur color within the colony. Eye colors, however, are a different story. The colony believes that the color of a Ma'ome's eyes reflect the color of their Soul, and their society is based around these Soul Colors. Some Soul Colors are considered mutations, and are "technically" not allowed in the colony. This isn't to say that you cannot have a Ma'ome with these mutant eye colors. Just be prepared for them to be looked down on, and for their life to be potentially dangerous. For more in-depth information on this, see the next post.

Geography: The colony is split into two major areas - an area housing almost exclusively cubs and adolescents, and an area housing adults. This adult area is also a base of operations for raids upon other groups. Separating the two areas is a small hilly area - almost a mountain range. There is a true mountain filled with caves at one end of this divider, called Kali Taya. The area where the colony's young stay is safer and more temperate, for the most part, and it is easier to hunt prey there. The adults' area, by contrast, is basically a desert wasteland. At some point in the past, it was over-hunted, and a drought hit it hard. This is perhaps one reason the colony has turned to invasion tactics and hostile takeovers of others.

Nocturnal Colony: Most of the colony is nocturnal, due to harsh conditions on the adult side of the area. The sun is too bright and hot there for anyone to want to be moving about during the day. So the colony runs on a night based schedule - forcing even the cubs in the safer, more temperate area to adopt a nocturnal lifestyle.

Trials of the Youth: Every cub born into the colony (and those brought in from elsewhere) must pass a series of Trials before they are allowed any real responsibilities, and can eventually be considered an adult. Even adults who join the colony must pass a more difficult version of the Trials than cubs go through, often involving battling a colony member at the end. Jade Souls are tasked with deciding when a cub is ready for the Trials. Some are sent to the mountain younger than others, if a Jade believes they can make it through. Once a cub is deemed ready, a Jade will come fetch them and drop them off at one of many mouths of a series of caverns riddling Kali Taya - the mountain on one end of the hills dividing the colony. These caves are considerably dangerous - dark inside with steep dropoffs, deep pools, and deadly wildlife. The goal is to make it through the maze of the caverns and back out again - on the correct side of the hills. If a cub tries to exit on the adult side of the colony, they are punished and turned back. The cubs are required to pass this Trial alone, though as long as they enter and exit alone, none can really say if they happen to help one another out inside. Of course, many alliances and enemies can be formed during the Trials.

Birthday: A colony member's birthday is not, in fact, considered to be the day they are actually born, but the day that they exit the Trials - the day they are birthed from the earth. This day is typically only celebrated among friends and romantic partners - as it is very rare for a colony member to know who their biological parents are.

Twelfth Perigee's Eve: This is the one major holiday celebrated by the colony, taking place (somewhat obviously) in the twelfth month of the year, when the moon is largest in the sky above. This evening is focused on thanks for getting through the year before, and giving gifts to friends and partners.

Naming: Cubs born into the colony are always given a name that has six letters in it. They are not given this name until they pass their Trial. A Jade typically names cubs after their Trial, though some cubs are allowed to choose their own name. Some have a first and last name, but not all, and this is not required. New members may choose to change their name, after passing the adult version of the Trial, to fit this tradition but are not required to.

Titles: Adult colony members are encouraged to choose a Title for themselves that has something to do with their personality, beliefs, profession, or something else they feel strongly about. These titles are typically eight letters, though there are exceptions. It is also not an absolute requirement to do this - but it is considered a bit weird if someone doesn't want to choose a Title.

Isolationist Tendencies: Most in the colony tend to isolate themselves from others, aside from close friends and romantic partners. It's accepted and expected that every Ma'ome is out for themselves. Competition is encouraged, and the strong are revered. The colony leader is especially ruthless, hunting down and killing or exiling any other Fuchsia Soul she hears of. It's uncommon for colony members to even have friends, much less a lot of friends. Cubs are much more likely to have friends, but just as likely to lose said friends in the Trials, or to competition for food, ranks, power, prestige, or any number of other things. Friendships lasting into adulthood are very rare.

Quadrant Romance: Romantic relationships within the colony are divided into four fairly rigid quadrants. Romance that blurs these together, or is outside the accepted and explained confines of them is considered aberrant and sometimes dangerous. For more information on this, see two posts down. A Clade is the term for interconnected quadrants that a colony member may have. For example, a partner of a partner would be in your Clade, and you'd be more likely to defend them in a battle than someone not in your Clade - though you yourself have no relationship to them.

"Ancestors": Most colony members, as previously stated, don't know who their biological parents are. Some adults through the colony's history, however, have made a name for themselves by doing something notable. Such as winning a decisive battle, being a well-known figure in religion, etc. If a young colony member is able to somehow trace their line back to one of these figures, they revere them in a way. It's not exactly religious, but they do admire these Ancestors and some try to emulate them, if they know of them.

Death: Death is considered fairly commonplace in the colony - the adults live in a dangerous area and war and invasion is also dangerous. The only ones who might mourn a death are those closest to the colony member who died. For most others, life just goes on as usual. Even a cub dying isn't really notable - as many cubs are lost to the Trials every year.

What's in a Soul Color?

Most of the society, beliefs, and castes of the colony are based on the members' Soul Color - which the colony believes is shown through the eyes. The image below shows the accepted Soul colors, how rare they are within members born in the colony, and what general place in society they denote.

There is a bit more of a spectrum within each color, as shown by the next image. The inner-most and outer-most rings of color indicate Mutant colors, these are actually the rarest, because they are typically driven out of the colony when they are discovered. Because they are "off-spectrum" they are considered to be unstable and dangerous. Even worse is heterochromia. A Ma'ome with this mutation means, to the colony, that their Soul is torn between two colors - leading to eventual insanity and corruption.

Along with being tied to what class a Ma'ome is in society, each Soul Color also has expected stereotypes, expected abilities, and even allowed ranks assigned to it. Following is a brief breakdown of each Soul Color, with some of this explained as well. Ranks will be covered in another post farther down. Keep in mind that in each Soul Color, there are obviously going to be those that don't fit the stereotype, these are just commonly held beliefs in the colony.

Rust: The lowest class, these Souls are considered to be held by Ma'ome that are barely a "person" in the eyes of the colony. Their stereotype is basically a "dumb brute", only good for manual labor and simple jobs. Anyone of any other Soul Color can boss them around with impunity. They tend to be physically strong (though not as strong as Blue Souls) but mentally weak.

Bronze: Only slightly above Rust, these Souls are generally looked down on as well, but are seen as a bit more useful. They tend to have a way with animals, and are often seen in Ranks having to do with this. They tend to be physically weak, as well as not very mentally bright - just... middle of the road.

Gold: The 'highest' of the lower classes, Gold Souls are considered the most useful of the Low Souls, in that they tend to have an uncanny sense of direction. They are often used as guides and scouts, most having little choice about this - making what could be a pleasurable job into something fairly horrible for most. Other than this, they tend to be very good at practical intelligence, figuring out puzzles and logical problems. They enjoy games as well, especially those where finding a clever solution is the way to win.

Lime: These Souls are actually fairly rare, and tend to hide themselves away from general society. They are a very social caste, tending to have more friends and connections than most. At some point in the past, the colony leaders tried to wipe them all out - fearing they would gather followers and start a revolution. However, a few Limes have started showing back up, and so far, have not been driven out.

Olive: Olive Souls are just kind of middle of the road. They tend to rely a lot on luck and skill to get through life. They are the most focused on friendships and romance, after the Limes, but don't have as easy of a time gathering others together - so they're not considered to be as dangerous. For the most part, they just coast along, not drawing attention to themselves, either good or bad.

Jade: These Souls tend to be intelligent and very detail oriented. They are generally the crafters and inventors of the colony - putting their minds and skills to work for the good of others over themselves. They also tend to be kind and caring to others, more-so than any other Souls. For this reason, they are also often tasked with duties related to the cubs of the colony.

Teal: Teal Souls are also very intelligent, but their minds tend more toward sharp wit and unparalleled memory for tradition and laws. They have very rigid opinions on what is right and wrong, and will argue anyone to death making their point on any given subject. Teals also really enjoy games relating to the imagination and pretend. They are also the highest of the middle class Souls.

Cobalt: Also simple known as Blue Souls, Cobalts are the lowest of the high class Souls. They tend to be the strongest of the Souls, physically, and have the bodies to back this up. A typical Cobalt Soul is a massive predator, intimidating to look at even for the nobility. They can be great allies, but on the flip side can be your worst enemy. It's relatively easy to be on their good side, but difficult to be completely in their inner circle.

Indigo: Indigo Souls are fairly similar to Cobalts in many ways, but tend to be less physically strong. They make closer allies easier than Cobalts do, but tend to also be a bit flighty in their interests and pursuits. In colony life, this often means they are prone to decide suddenly that they want a different job or rank on any given day of the week, month, or year - to the frustration of their leaders.

Purple: These Souls are the mostly likely to be religious within the colony. They fall just below royalty in the hierarchy, so have impunity to do more or less whatever they want, as long as they don't catch the attention of one of the royals in a negative way. Their religious pursuits are often described as cult-like by the lower castes and most don't understand what the Purples are going on about. Purple Souls also tend to have a volatile, violent streak to them, that can be set off by seemingly random things. So others tend to avoid them, especially those in lower castes.

Violet: The first of the royal Souls, Violets tend to be eccentric and changeable. They follow the most popular trends of the times, but also want to be seen as unique by their peers and others. They can also be violent if provoked, and have very little checks to their behavior. They tend to only associate with other royals as far as friends and romance goes, though there are outliers.

Fuchsia: The top of the top, the rarest of all Souls. At the moment, there is only one adult Fuchsia Soul in the colony - the Empress. She guards her title very very jealously, keeping a close eye on new cubs for any with Fuchsia eyes. These cubs are usually either killed or driven out of the colony at a young age, never to be seen again. In the colony's beliefs, only a Fuchsia Soul can lead them, and the Empress does not want to risk anyone taking her out, and taking over the colony.

Quadrants and You!

Romance within the colony is structured into four distinct types, or quadrants. Below is a brief description of each, their symbols, and how they work in society.

Matesprite; Red; Heart: This is the most similar to a typical romantic relationship that other colonies would recognize, so it's the easiest to start with. It's symbolized by a heart, as well as the color red; and indicates partners who love each other in a positive way including physical relations intended to produce offspring. It's often referred to as "flushed" romance in society.

Moirail; Pale; Diamond: The second of the more positively inclined quadrants, Moiraillegiance is close-ish to being someone's best friend. It's not exactly the same, however, as there is still an element of romance. Moirails watch out for each other, and try to make one another a better person by way of positive reinforcement. Moirails also act as therapist to one another, "jamming" with their feelings and emotions. There is some physical affection shown, usually by touching and cuddling. But this quadrant is not about producing offspring at all - there is a definite "ew" reaction to any implication that Pale partners would do this. This type of affection is symbolized by a diamond and is often called "pale".

Kismesis; Pitch; Spade: Probably the most difficult to explain, this quadrant is sort of a flip side of the Matesprite and Moirail quadrants. It's based in wanting to be better, and make your partner better - but this is done through competition and rivalry, rather than more positive things. Entering this kind of relationship requires respect from both partners - and both are usually dangerous alone, but even more dangerous when they put their skills together. There is a physical side to this quadrant, similar to the Flush quadrant - but think of it like a BDSM relationship - for lack of a better parallel. There is still respect and rules to this part of the quadrant, it's not just senseless violence. This quadrant does have physical relations that can produce offspring.

Auspistice; Ash; Club: This is the final quadrant, and is tied with Kismesitude. At times, two colony members will attempt to become a Pitch pair - but for whatever reason it doesn't work like it's supposed to. Perhaps rules are not as clear as they need to be, or there is some other imbalance. This quadrant is for that. It is a polyamorous quadrant, involving the two potential Pitch partners, and a third member who mediates between them. These relationships can be temporary - simply existing until the Pitch partners are stable - or they can be long lasting. This quadrant does not produce offspring.

Life and Ranks in the Colony

As mentioned briefly above, the colony lands are separated into two main areas - one for younger colony members and one for adults. The area for colony youth is called Kughushi, the Forge, and the one where adults live is called Nchi Kavu, or Drylands. When a cub is born, or joins the pride, they are taken from their biological parents by a Jade Soul, and more or less dumped in the middle of Kughushi and left to fend for themselves. Within this area, many companion species reside - since it's safer there than over on the other side of the hills. These species may choose to essentially adopt and raise a cub - become its Lusus. This is term the colony has for a parent that is not a biological parent, and also one of the Ranks allowed for other species to hold. The Rank isn't necessarily given out by the colony, but came into being sometime in the past and now it's just a thing that these pseudo-parents are called and is accepted by the colony at large. Not every cub gets a Lusus, and this isn't a requirement - but it's generally thought that a cub with a Lusus to raise them will be a more well-adjusted adult.

Once a cub is deemed ready for the Trials, a Jade Soul will come and take them away from their Lusus, if they have one, and escort them to the mountain for their Trial. After the Trial, most Lusii will not associate with the cub anymore, and will usually choose another cub to raise. However, this is not always the case. Some choose to stay with their "child" longer, at times becoming other Ranks over time.

Cubs with mutant Souls are mostly left alone by the adults, but other cubs are absolutely encouraged to shun them, bully them, and generally make their lives more difficult. Most of these mutants are not chosen by Lusii, so they have little to no protection. The idea is that all this harassment will make the cub want to leave the colony on its own - or even cause death in some cases.

Once a colony member grows into an adult, they must make their way over the hills to Nchi Kavu and enter adult society. This is a much harsher and cruel place, with rigid Ranks and structure that everyone must conform to. It's very militarized in structure, with everyone focused on going out and conquering other groups, and even taking over other areas to funnel back resources to the main colony. If a colony member attempts to avoid this journey, they are generally hunted down and forced to do so. This is the point at which any mutants still alive and in the colony are also driven out - or killed if they are determined to be especially corrupt and dangerous.
