Halia has, in her opinion, been a rather poor friend lately to Rowan. She knew she had dropped off the face of the earth more or less with contact, and she felt awful about dropping the ball like that. In an attempt to reach out and mend what she worried she might have broken, she sent Rowan a text to invite her over to see her new apartment and have lunch, hoping that she would be game for that.

Spending the last half hour tidying up, Halia sat anxiously on the edge of the new couch as she waited for Rowan, leg bouncing anxiously. When she heard the knock at the door, she was on her feet in record time, opening it to see her friend. "You came!" The relief was clearly visible on her face and she moved out of the way for Rowan to enter.

Rowan was pleasantly surprised to receive a message from Halia, it had been a good while since they’d last seen each other. She could only assume that the other young woman had been preoccupied with everything that had happened over the past months. With a new apartment on top of all of that, it was no wonder that she hadn’t had time to talk. Carefully placing a few jars of her newer tea blends into an old gift basket, she hurried out the door and into her car. Encountering a bakery along the way, she hurried inside to buy a batch of still-warm rolls and a few pastries before returning to her car. She wasn’t sure how suitable a housewarming gift it would be, but at least she knew that she had one thing Halia liked.

She smiled as her friend opened the door, “Of course I came! I would have helped you move if you needed it. Anyway, I brought you a few things. I hope you like them!”

Halia's smile was warm but tired. "I appreciate it. My grandpa lent me his truck though, so it wasn't too bad. He uh. Also bought me a new couch. Apparently my old one was "the saddest couch begging to be taken away" according to him" She laughed softly and gestured for Rowan to sit on the couch with her.

"I'm sorry I haven't been in touch much lately. The lease on my apartments was up and wasn't able to be renewed because the building was being sold, so I had to move, and also get a new job. It uh. It's been really hectic..." She picked at the edge of the bandage wrapped around her right calf as she spoke, and anxious habit she always seemed to have whenever there was a bandage on her skin. "On top of it all, I learned I actually have a super huge family and most of them are like us too. It's.... It's been a lot."

Rowan was surprised to hear Halia mention a grandfather, she couldn’t remember hearing her friend ever talk about her family. She had some suspicions as to why that was the case, but Halia’s obvious discomfort when any of the older scars became visible made it clear that it was a story for Halia to tell when she was ready. If she was ever ready.

“Oh I know how stressful that can be, I understand being caught up in something like that.” Rowan’s eyes instinctively flicked downward as her friend fidgeted with the bandage on her leg. “What happened there?”

Despite her concern over the apparent injury, Rowan felt a surprised happiness at the revelation that Halia found more of her family. Family who seemingly were far better than the ones she’d known before. She couldn’t imagine having any relatives in their situation, much less a lot of them. Still, it sounded like a good support system and everyone could use that in their lives.

“That’s…amazing! Are they nice? How many of them are like us?”

Fingers stilled against the bandage and Halia gave her friend a sheepish smile before gently peeling it away, exposing a fairly fresh looking tattoo. It was a long, slender sword with elegantly swirling vines around it and delicate little flowers. "Poor impulse control." She touched the tattoo gently before looking back up at her friend. "I've kept a bandage over it so my grandpa doesn't see it. He doesn't like tattoos on women and thinks it's unbecoming, and I don't want to see his disappointed look if he sees it. He noticed the one on my wrist already and made a face at it, so I can only imagine what his reaction to this one would be." She laughed softly and gently covered it back up. "Well. That and I didn't wanna scrape it on anything while I was moving since it was still healing."

The questions about her family made her eyes light up, clearly excited to talk about it. "They're all really nice! A handful were even at the battle against the Calamitous Hollow too. I'm not sure exactly how many are like us, but a good number of them that I've met so far! And if they aren't, their spouse usually is. It's....honestly it's amazing. They've all been so kind to me, even while I'm muddling through some stuff that could come back to bite me. They're supportive and wonderful. I uh. Haven't told them about having to move, because I don't want to worry or burden them. But once I'm more settled, maybe I should have a house warming party or something? Invite some of them, and you, and maybe Mason and Madeline...." She trailed off as she listed people, though her cheeks lightly flushed at Mason's name.

Rowan’s eyes widened in surprise before she broke into a smile as she admiringly appraised her friend’s new tattoo, nodding in approval. “Well, that is lovely, it really suits you! Where did you get the inspiration for it?” She was uninked herself, too concerned about the possibility of needing to build outfits around something so permanent, but that certainly didn’t stop her from appreciating other people’s body art.

She pursed her lips slightly Halia’s desire to not antagonize her grandfather was understandable, but it still seemed like a shame to hide it. At least from the sound of it he was a kind man, old-fashioned views on personal aesthetics aside.

An undeniable happiness rose within her as her friend described her new family, and as complicated as the supernatural elements could make things, having people to help carry the burden would certainly make those complications easier to navigate.

“I’m glad to hear that, I think you needed a win in the ‘family’ department.” She was surprised at the idea of Halia throwing a housewarming party, she hadn’t seemed much like the party sort. Having good people to add to the guest list must be a good motivator.

Rowan was fairly certain that the name “Mason” triggered the blush that spread across Halia’s face and she raised her eyebrows. “Mason, hm?” Her expression grew a bit mischievous. “New friend?”

"Well.....the first one I got on my wrist is super delicate and easily missed..." She held her arm out to show off a dainty, elegant lily of the valley tattoo on her forearm, the opposite side of the sword. "Lily of the valley symbolizes rebirth and renewal, so that was obvious. That one.....someone I cared about told me he bet I wouldn't have the nerve to get one. He....vanished before I could show him he was wrong though." Her smile was sad as she spoke of Eion. The boy had vanished into thin air around. The time of the battle against the Hollow, and she prayed that wherever he was, whatever happened to him, that he was safe and well and happy.

"For this one, it was uh. Less about the what and more about a manic breakdown when I learned I was losing my apartment and therefore had to also leave my job. But I think it reminds me of the previous Aruna a little. Elegant and dainty but deadly." It was helpful that both tattoos were hidden by her fuku when she transformed, her arm by her cuff and her leg by her boot.

The face her friend made as she mentioned hiding it from her grandpa made her laugh, and she shook her head. "He wouldn't be angry or anything, you know. He would just get this grouchy sour look on his face and probably grump about it for a while, but he wouldn't be angry. He's always supported me no matter what. I mean, if her can handle the whole me being a magical super hero thing, I'm sure he could handle a tattoo. But I also don't want to press my luck after he just lent me his truck to move."

The teasing was expected, considering how her grandfather had also not passed the chance up either, and her cheeks flushed darker still. She cleared her throat and tried to hold her head up a bit higher. "Yes. Friend. Very nice, very sweet friend. He uh. He and my sister are the same age." She hoped the mention of the age gap would dissuade any further insinuation, but she doubted it. "He and his sister gave me the plants actually. They're both very sweet. I uh. I saved Mason from a youma actually a while back. It made me think of how I met you, actually. Except he wasn't waving a high heel at it." There was humor in her eyes as she teased Rowan, still slightly amazed that she had even done that back then. "But.....he's a good friend. He's funny, and sweet, and kind. Even if he's in over his head a lot and stresses me out with his lack of concern sometimes. But......I feel good when I'm around him, you know? Really happy. But I also want to sometimes put him in a bubble and keep him out of harms reach. And it's frustrating because I've never felt that protective about someone, and I think it might bother him to an extent. But I can't help myself." The words kept coming, and she smiled warmly as she spoke about the boy. It was clear to anyone with eyes just exactly how she felt. Anyone but herself, of course.

Rowan nodded, intrigued by her friend’s thought process as she described the reasoning that went into her tattoo. She’d never considered the possibility of getting a tattoo on a dare, though she was fully aware that her own reckless tendencies stemmed from that sort of thinking. There were certainly worse ways to cope with stress, many of which found themselves well embodied in the battered alien she’d left snoring on her couch. Still, the mention of a breakdown was more than enough to elicit concern.

“What happened? Did…Harold have something to do with it?” It would have been stranger if it hadn’t affected her profoundly. She should have been more consistent in checking in with Halia. Not that the things she experienced, the things she saw hadn’t been affecting her. Driving her if she was being entirely honest with herself. She should have checked in more.

Hearing Halia talk about her grandfather eased some of the tension within her. A strong support network. Everyone needed that. Mason, on the other hand, seemed to have an entirely different effect on her friend. Though the difference in age did catch her by surprise. She couldn’t remember exactly how much older Halia was than her sister, but from what she remembered she was in her late teens. Maybe the boy was in college.

“He sounds sweet, even if he didn’t opt for an improvised weapon.” She returned the smile with a slight sheepishness. More than a bit of a mother hen herself, the need to protect the vulnerable resonated with her deeply. “Nothing wrong with having a crush.”

"I'm sure that played a part in it. Recurring nightmares and all that. But my lease was up, the apartment building was being sold, I had to move which meant I had to find another job, because I only originally worked at the cafe because it was really close to the apartment, and everything felt like it imploded all at once. She sighed and ran a hand through her hair, causing her bangs to stick up here and there. "It feels like.....like I lost something I had fought so hard for. Like I lost the first place in my life that I felt like I belonged in....."

And then Rowan hit her with the truth she had been blissfully blind to. "A.....crush?" Halia blinked owlishly at her friend, saying the word as if it was a completely foreign concept to her. "No, no, Mason is just a friend. And he's seeing someone. And he's like three years younger than me. He's totally just a really good friend!" He was. Right? That's what she had always thought. But the pieces were slowly beginning to connect in her brain in a glaringly obvious way. "He's ....he's just really sweet, y'know? And his sister is too. Madeline is a total sweetheart. Prickly at first but sweet." Because deflection had always worked. Deflect, change the subject, don't look too close. There was no way she could have feelings for her friend..... Could she?

Everything Halia described definitely felt like reason enough to struggle emotionally, the thoroughly unpleasant business with the Dark Star and its…employee would take a toll on anybody. It had taken a toll on her, to say the least. “If you’d let me know I’d have let you stay with me for as long as you needed to. Though, I do have an…unusual houseguest right now. A deep space senshi followed me home.”

There was a hint of laughter in her voice at the absurdity of her situation. She couldn’t deny that she would have been tempted to take in a stray alien even if she didn’t have some of Elysia’s vague recollections on the matter. After a few thoughtful seconds she continued, “Well, if you did have a crush, there would be nothing wrong with that on its own. It’s good that you wouldn’t want to get between him and whoever he’s seeing now though.” Unrequited crushes weren’t Rowan’s idea of a fun time, but it was still better than potentially hurting someone. Besides, new friendships were worth celebrating.

"I appreciate that. Really. I'm sure my cousins would have offered me a room too, but for me, having my own place is.....it's important to me. It's hard to explain. It's something that makes me feel like I'm doing at least something right." The mention of a deep space senshi had her arching and eyebrow though. "Oh? You say followed you home like they're a stray kitten." She laughed softly at the idea of it, Grieve being the first to come to mind and making the image in her head even more silly.

"Mason is just.....sweet. You know how some people are like walking sunshine? How when they walk into a room, the whole room becomes brighter just by them existing? That's what he's like. I know I can text him any time and he will always have a response. And I always feel happy when I'm with him....." Slowly, more pieces started fitting together. "I feel.....good when I'm with him. Like I'm actually really doing something right. Like.....like I'm not just some cosmic mistake." She blinked as it finally really sunk in. "Oh my god.....I like him." Slowly, Halia lifted her head to look up at Rowan, eyes wide as if a secret of the universe had just been dropped in her lap, mouth slightly open.

Rowan smiled sympathetically, “I understand that, but just know that if you ever need somewhere to stay, you’re always welcome at my place, even if you just need a night.” She hoped that Halia wasn’t being too harsh with herself on the matter, “Besides, it’s not like someone selling your old place was anything you did wrong.”

The way her friend characterized Fin wasn’t entirely inaccurate, cats could be very loud and needy when they wanted to be. She couldn’t exactly blame the man for being desperate for social interaction after how “A very…chatty stray kitten who hasn’t had anyone to talk to for a very long time. I have scraps of memories of the old Tempesti being friends with him, but he obviously knows more about that than I do.”

As she listened to the way Halia described her situation, she couldn’t help but allow her own concern to color her thoughts on the matter. Happy as she would normally be to see her friend so excited about a potential love interest, it was impossible to ignore the fact that the boy was in a relationship with someone else. “He definitely sounds likeable, but I do think that you should be careful that things don’t get too messy, especially if he’s seeing someone else.” She hated to throw cold water on Halia’s enthusiasm, but taking that into consideration had to be better in the long run, right?

All of the previous thoughts left Halia's head as she tried her best to wrap her mind around this new information. She had feelings. For Mason. She liked him. It made everything go just a little haywire in her messed up little brain as it made so much make sense.

"Y-yeah...I mean, I have no intention of ever saying anything about it.....but...." She frowned. Was that why her stomach turned whenever she heard about the boy he was seeing? Why it felt icky when she thought about him even holding hands with someone? Oh. Yeah, that would make sense. "Oh I don't like this.....I don't like this feeling at all. I would rather have absolutely kept being ignorant about it." Because if she had continued to be ignorant about her own feelings, she could have kept on going just as she was. Nothing would have to change. But now? Now everything felt different suddenly.

"Rowan what do I do?"

Seeing Halia’s distress, Rowan felt more than a little bit guilty for pressing her into this state of painful clarity. She’d clearly been happier in her oblivious state, especially given that

“I don’t think…I think there’s really not anything good to do here. I’m sorry, I shouldn’t have pushed you on it.” She held out her arms, offering a comforting hug. If she couldn’t put the genie back in the bottle, the least she could do was be supportive. Her own romantic inexperience aside, she knew how tough it could be to have those feelings and nowhere to put them.

“I think the best thing you can do is just be a friend to him. Things will even out in the end. Anyway, someone would be lucky to have you as a friend.” It wasn’t the happy ending answer she’d like to give, but it was better than lying. Even if it didn’t feel better.

Halia wrapped her arms around Rowan, hugging her tightly. She didn't know what to do with these feelings, how to process them or how to channel them into anything good. Instead, tears decided to roll down her cheeks. She always cried when she was frustrated or worked up, and this was no different.

"I like him.....that's what all of this has been...." She sounded pathetic as she spoke. "...god I'm pathetic Rowan." She cried into her friends shoulder, struggling to process it all. "I hate this...I hate it so much."
