He remembered how ominous it felt to entrust himself to that eerie, blackened space. It galled him more to trust Hybris to it, but better that break in reality over Albite or that pile of bugs. They'd have both gone after his boy's starseed imminently.
And Eles was no mind-reader — he couldn't say if they would end up on that adjacent building again, or if they'd end up at the house, or falling into the pool, or if they'd get sent straight to Mirrorspace as a safe harbor. That choice wasn't his; it wasn't his crystal that cut through the world. He only helped his boy make the incision.
But this space was so stupefyingly dark that Eles couldn't tell where they were. Couldn't hear anything, either. He felt no breeze. But as his eyes began to adjust, as he saw a shadow drip down from the ceiling, he thought this choice was a pretty horrible one.
"What the ********," he said to the boy whose hand he still clutched. "Where did you take us?"

It took awhile for Hybris to answer, heart still pounding and mind full of the sight of Eles-as-Faustite dressed in power and wreathed in the glow of fireflies once more. The sight of Eles-as-Faustite’s ruthlessly efficient motion with that dagger. The sudden absence of that hand around his starseed and the smear of intimacy that remained in its wake.
It was, very simply, a lot to take in. And Hybris gave himself that time.
Slowly his breathing began to ease, matching Eles’s…Faustite’s, as a matter more habit than choice. Eventually, leaning heavily into his boy, he answered, “Sometimes it puts you into a waiting area. It’s not bad, good for collecting extra energy. Just a little more tiring.”
A few more steady, matched breaths, “Do you remember?” It didn’t seem so, not with how things fell out. But all possibility of Eles getting to live a life purely as Eles was now gone, even if the boy didn’t know it yet. The leaning turned into an embrace, a firm, almost bruising one that even so, wouldn’t hurt. Not when both of them were like this.

Hybris earned such a look askance for suggesting this was a waiting area. As if they could expect an ensemble of elevator music to spill out of all the muck and gristle. What if they were in the guts of the world right now, witnessing what existed outside of their reality? That seemed reason enough to suspect nefarious things in the dark, but Hybris didn't sound worried about it. He started to relax.
Then again, Hybris wasn't worried about meeting with Albite. Wasn't worried about the possibility of losing his starseed to that miresome man and his youma companion.
"Remember what?" He asked reflexively. "This place?"

“Being Faustite,” Hybris sighed as he finally, fully, and simply crossed that line that had floated vaguely in his periphery for a while now. And before the disagreement could begin, he added, “You’re different. But he would have recognized you as Faustite, more than perhaps anybody else.” Youma not included.
“He was, is,” so gallingly, “Faustite’s…your,” he sighed again at the twists of it, and he should be delighted for those twists. But maybe he’d skated a little too close to death tonight, and mourned the very blessed simplicity of Eles’s life to this point more than he’d been expecting. Maybe he’d find it funnier tomorrow. “Your husband,” he finished, apologetic.
“The Negaverse is going to know you again.” Not just some random agent recognizing his boy’s talent, but the whole of the organization, finding their prodigal general king.

"… Oh." Eles relaxed into Hybris's grip, having already decided that he most certainly wasn't Faustite, and people mixing him up with a tiki torch of a high schooler with a rabid harem was both disrespectful and deserving of a knife to the face. "No."
And when Hybris clarified about Albite, he reiterated his statement firmly and simply. "No."
Albite wasn't his husband. He never agreed to that. Never married that boy. He'd already decided which boy he was marrying, and it was the one that clutched to him like a crutch, in the dark, while they waited to be digested in the stomach of the world. And he could kiss that boy, taste the wrong in his mouth and swallow it down so neither of them would have to hear it anymore. There was no more Faustite. And for all he was concerned, Albite could blame himself for losing Faustite.
"That sounds like a tomorrow problem." What was the Negaverse going to do, take his eye for taking one of their agent's eyes? They were welcome to try. He ******** dared them to track him down in this Somewhere interstice and chase him through the dark. He dared, and they did not come.
So he reached out, felt the outline of Hybris's shoulder, his neck, his jaw, then leaned in to seal those lips for a few long moments.
Then, as he pulled away in growing consternation, "… Why do you taste like dollar store berry syrup?"

The denial was fast, firm, and not at all interested. Hybris couldn’t help but smile at the lack of profound change to be gained from either unlocking wherever his powered self had been or Hybris’s declaration. The smile could be felt through that kiss, full of blood, fake and real, and whatever else Albite had left in his mouth. Neither cared.
Except…maybe a little.
“Blood caps,” Hybris admitted. Oops. “I was hoping he’d let up sooner.” Then sighed yet again, “I think he just enjoyed it more, though.” The potential downside of that particular tactic. Exciting the other party, becoming some kind of broken doll that would be even more lovely to break a bit further.
Remembering how the eternal had looked at him, fist in his chest, Hybris could feel his heart rate pick up again, “I am looking at you, like you’re the bravest, most skillful, and caring person I’ve ever seen,” Hybris described to Eles in that pitch black, and was all the more straightforward for it.
“You saved me. You keep trying to save me and you have.”

bleed a little first? I'm throwing you in the ******** pool when we get out of… Wherever this is." Firm, decisive, if not altogether serious.
"Next time, do a kink check first? Call it 'character research' if you need to." The boy enjoyed putting his nose in scripts and diaries. Surely using his wiles to page through someone's kinks would tell him what kind of careful to be if he ever ran into that again. Of course, the alternative was simply to never run into Albite again, but how realistic was that? He'd encountered the boy by chance through a call, then accidentally induced another visit when Eles was trying to finish a sketch. For as sprawling as Destiny City was, it felt quite small when their jealous enemies could teleport.
For a minute, Eles fell quiet. Not out of any particular reverence for Hybris's praise, or any internal monologues of self-flagellation. To put to words what he felt was ever a troublesome affliction, like he was doomed to never know the boy in the mirror.
He searched in the black-dark until he found those two delicate hands and clutched them in his own. Looking down, he admitted, "I was scared."

Trying not to laugh out loud, the shaking of his chest gave Hybris away quickly enough. Strange that his eyes were burning for it as well, though. His throat thick with it. Hybris nosed at Eles until his face met that neck and he planted another kiss there, hoping it smeared the boy with a red letter.
The confession hit like an aftershock, still managing to shake the air between them even after all that had come about. Twisting his hand to better take the other boy’s, to better explore their fine lengths with his thumbs, Hybris considered that. And remembered the hammer. The shock of it reverberating through the days after. No regrets but still…
Had that been the result of touching the edge of fear?
And this, a body brought down in a swift arc of blood and blade, was that Eles going past that edge and plunging his fist into that fear, the same way he might, soon, pull out a starseed. His boy was really dangerous when afraid, wasn’t he? A good thing for so many, that he was so rarely caught up by it.
“How did it feel?”

He huffed into those wild wefts of black that cloyed his face whenever the boy was so close. "Okay, you made your point."
Because that's what his question was about, wasn't it? Hybris had been so utterly offended, so gobsmacked when Eles asked him how it felt when those ribs were shattered. How that hurt echoed inside him, poisoning him with every breath. He'd thought the question ridiculous. Valueless. Why should he have to describe the pain of shattered bones to someone? Wouldn't it be better if they found out for themselves? But that wasn't what happened.
"It didn't feel ******** good, obviously! Felt pretty ******** cheated for how this b*****d put his fist through your chest when I get first rights of refusal!" He sighed.

And it should be a throw away line. A little joke. But Hybris knew the thread of truth to it, the possessive ownership of his own life and death. And he was reminded, again, that they were getting married. The same way he was reminded daily, hourly, since they’d decided. Shocking. Delighted. Painfully hopeful.
“That’s right. Next time,” and yes, he agreed wholly in that inevitability, “...they need to ask your permission first. It’s yours after all.” And here he lifted one of those hands to his chest, exactly where a much larger, angrier one had been not very long ago. And then he pressed, in silent urging.

No matter how Hybris pressed, those gloved fingers had not passed beyond the barrier of his clothing. He didn't need to pull the boy's plug in this space. Even for careless play, there remained too many risks. If he dropped that starseed in all this muck, would he be able to find it again? If he pulled the boy's starseed and they were suddenly separated in this strange space, who would be left behind? Dropping him like a cheap sack of flout seemed more the petty kind of trick he would pull when the world lulled into a bore and the pair were aching for a little mischief, a little enrichment. Something they could derive a performance from and confuse some brown-nosing knight.
But, all those reasons aside, Eles found that he didn't remember how to do it. Perhaps he would under duress, but now? With all that danger left behind after Eles put out his eye?
Eles just drummed his fingertips against the boy's chest. As if all these cute little attempts to die by Eles's hand were something endearing.
"I'm throwing you in the pool," Eles deadpanned. "It's what you deserve."

“It’s what I deserve,” Hybris confirmed as he aimed a kiss at Eles, met his chin, then landed right on target. “And you so kind and hardworking, to bear the effort of tossing me about.” It would take a bit longer then, for his boy to overwrite that other signature across his soul. But he would, given time, experience, and maybe a little less peril.
“There’s a piece of good news, though. At least if someone makes you go to whatever…place, the Negaverse has.” Giving up, he moved the hand from his chest and to his mouth, for Eles to feel the smile there. “She isn’t there anymore.”
He trusted the answer he’d been given, fair for the price he’d paid. Though not worth his starseed. Albite and that youma, that Headache were so greedy. Maybe this was a lesson they’d needed. To know the cost of certain desires.

Heaving a put-upon sigh, he added, "If only we could've gotten Albite to do it for us. Would've saved me the trouble." Not that the boy would want to do it now. It irked him; Albite seemed so friendly that night, standing with Blarney at his side, his manner so easy. What the ******** happened between then and this night, where he thought it fine to take a soul that belonged to someone else? If it had been any other boy, anyone else entirely…
And he felt that still-alive boy smile, spread fingers over those lips to determine the breadth of it, however unconsciously he wore one of his own. The first question — who's she — was answered before reaching his tongue. The one who spoke in nursery rhymes and walked with a cane. The one who set him on edge, but afforded him no ways out — no way to win. He remembered feeling like all he could do was endure and survive, and if he had anything left in him afterward, he could hope with it, but he couldn't recall what she did. Couldn't remember what her name was.
"I don't remember her very well," he explained into the silence, into the darkness. He could imagine his boy, who was real, who was right there. "I guess, if anything's coming back, it's in hard-won, senseless fragments." Pieces of warnings carried on in a fraught body. Conveyed without the language of scar tissue.
"Do you think this changes anything?"

What a maddening way for memories to float up, like unhelpful bits of confetti. And the clearer parts always awful. “It does,” Hybris insisted, voice turning solemn. “It means we aren’t moving. Out of this city, maybe off this continent entirely.”
Because he wasn’t brave. Or particularly strong. But (usually) Hybris knew when to cut his losses and run. And that woman waiting for Eles in the Negaverse would have meant running. Far enough that Destiny City’s magical factions couldn’t drag Eles further in, couldn’t so easily reach out and grab at his boy with those greedy fingers. No Mirror, either, from what Hybris understood. But between the Mirror and some woman setting Eles on fire again, the choice was easy.
“Not unless you want to.”
With his free hand, Hybris traced exploratory fingers along the unfamiliar seams and trim of the uniform. “And this, I intend to enjoy this so much.”

Moving? Was Hybris planning on ditching out and moving to Greenland or something? What would that fix? Better that they wouldn't be spending the rest of their lives looking over their shoulders, but surely they could've exhausted other avenues before resorting to Witness Protection Program levels.
"No," he replied, affronted at the ask. "The dogs would hate it. Besides, I'd have to exist legally." Which, to his knowledge, he didn't.
He felt faint pressure on different parts of his uniform. Felt strange to be so buttoned up, especially after he'd gotten used to Ebon's outfits, but he hadn't grown too hot in it. He suspected Hybris was already brewing up some nefarious plans — whatever he thought might benefit him while with a, he supposed, Negaverse agent. Eles wasn't sure what particular use he'd be beyond that knife, maybe starseeding, and maybe teleporting.
"What are you planning?" Asked in an utterly accusatory, highly interested manner. "At least wait until I have some code name figured out." They used rocks, right?
