Jason arrived early, partly because habit, but also there was a certain set of nerves that had been quiet for the summer and were now waking up to riotous life. A set of nerves labeled Matilda Winchester. Settling in to the diner booth, he asked the server to bring him a glass of sweet tea. Something to fuss at in a place where he couldn't pace about at will. It seemed that, from the very beginning, Tilly had been a sort of question mark to him. At first the normal sort: girl. But over time, over talks and memories and battles and graduations, that question mark had grown and gotten bolder. Way harder to ignore. And then she'd gone to Europe. Which seemed like it might change her in some profound kind of way. People always talked about their trips to Europe like that, didn't they? So was that big, looming question mark now like... italicized? Sucking down his tea with a grimly worried face, Jason was both excited to see Tilly again and a little afraid.

Tilly was glad that she had met with Almere first. The spoons she had collected had been so fun to give, but…the other gifts she had…well. It wasn’t that they meant more, it just…they were more than spoons. That was all.
Hopefully it wouldn't be too tacky that she gave Jason the gift for Luke, his had been the easiest. A pressed tulip? Absolutely perfect for Lisse’s vibe.
As Tilly entered the diner and saw Jason, she broke into a huge smile and hurried over, sliding into the booth across from him. “Hey stranger! Did you get taller while I was away?” Not that she could tell with him sitting down, but all boys liked to be flattered that they were getting taller, at least she hoped so.
“Tell me though, did you actually miss me, or were you super excited to meet up for the presents? You can be honest!”

She absolutely looked different. Like more mature. Knowledgable. Here eyes had seen Europe. He feet had walked not only across a whole 'nother continent, but also across the graduation stage. Tilly was like, an adult-adult, but she felt like she was just about there in some ways that were still well out of his grasp. But also she looked beautiful. Bright and glowing, looking forward in the way he'd always felt drawn to. "I missed you," and here Jason's voice took on such a layer of painful sincerity that he had to clear his throat. With a small flush and a laugh, he scratched at the back of his head. "I mean, yeah, give me the goods." Lowering his hand, Jason held it out, paused, then brought out his other hand too. "It better be big."

“Big? Really, Jason? You want something big, you realize all I had was a carry on and it had a weight limit. I brought Lena a bunch of spoons…did you know that people actually collect spoons? They’re adorable, but utterly useless…but. They absolutely fit Lena so…I had to grab her one whenever I saw them.”
Tilly was grinning even more broadly, and reached over, covering his hands with one of her own. “What if I told you that I was your gift? Would you still be as happy to see me? Still be missing me?”
Okay, so teasing him was horribly fun, and she couldn’t help herself…he had kind of walked into it.
“I have your brother’s gift, which isn’t me, by the way, if you wouldn’t mind playing messenger.”

"That's most collectibles..." Jason argued, voice mild but unable to fight down his smile. That froze as soon as she mentioned her being his gift. Face flushed, he tried to bury his head in his sweet tea. Briefly choked. Looked at her for half a second, then sucked down about half the glass through his straw. "Yeah, I'd still be missing you." He muttered after clearing his throat from whatever bone had just crawled down his throat. "I won't even charge you a fee." Nodding in relief at the change in target, Jason was finally able to properly look at Tilly again. "What'd you get him?"

To her credit, Tilly did not laugh, she bit down hard on her lower lip, but did not laugh at his obvious discomfort, did not draw attention to it, did not do anything…fun. Instead, she rummaged through her bag and pulled out a postcard covered in plastic and housing a single, pressed tulip. “Here, it’s a tulip from Lisse, I went through the town and it’s absolutely lovely. I thought he would like it, or at least maybe he won’t hate it? But you’ll make him like it, I’m sure.”
So she hadn’t laughed. She hadn’t drawn attention to his misery…but with that…
With that statement, Tilly winked, her expression growing quite mischievous.

Holding it up he nodded, "Luke will love it. He's really into..." Jason's voice trailed off as he say Tilly... winking? Lowering the card, he gave her a concerned look. "Is there something in your eye?"

“Oh, uh, no. Is there something in your eye?”
A terrible comeback but. Now Tilly felt a little flustered. “I went to Halle too. I tried to find…all of our wonders, and I did a good job. At least I think so. I’m biased though. Uh. Here.”
She pulled out a small bag and shoved it over to Jason.
Inside was some stationary that was edged with a bluebell design, and a magnet from Halle, as well as a map of the city and a book with facts about the history of Halle.

When she said all our wonders, Jason shot up in his seat and looked around before giving Tilly a pained, pointed look. They really were just too used to talking together while powered up, it made it all too easy to slip up in public the handful of time they weren't. Taking the bag in both hands, he opened it carefully and slowly went over everything, pulling them out one by one with sincere interest and enthusiasm. Especially the map and book. Finally looking up from the outright haul, Jason met lavender eyes once more, bashful but undoubtedly pleased. "This is amazing! You um...it was really nice of you to think of me like this. Thank you."

Oh, oops. Tilly flushed slightly and shook her head. “I just mean they were wonderful places…yeah.”
The fact that he liked his gifts made her grin again. “Good I had hoped you would be interested in it. I hope you get to visit there someday. It was absolutely amazing. I want to go when the tulips are actually blooming at some point…just because I know that has to be breathtaking.”
She hesitated a moment and grinned once again. "...So was it a better present than me?"

As she spoke, he placed the gifts back into their bag with slow, reverent hands and didn't answer he question until he was done. Then he met her eyes again, and instead of smiling or joking or distracting, Jason very solemnly answered, "No."After a long moment, he smiled again, "So welcome back, I'm really glad you came back."

“Oh.” Tilly flushed slightly and then nodded. “I couldn’t stay away even if I wanted to, but…I’m glad I’m back too. I missed you a lot…do you wanna…keep hanging out for the day, or do you have other things to do?”
Not better. Just. Other.
“I hope that you want to keep hanging out. Just for the record.”

Brightening, then trying to tone it down a little, Jason nodded, "Yeah. You want to like, go see a movie or something?"

"Yeah! I'd love that, a lot." Her whole face lit up and she nodded, tossing her long hair back over her shoulder. "Slow service here, but I'm glad for the extra time spent with you...tell me all that you've been up to!"
