So far the day’s visit to the Destiny City Reservoir had been mercifully cryptid free. Though Rowan had learned not to hold her breath in terms of avoiding weird monster-related activities, today’s late morning crowds would probably discourage its mischief. And if they didn’t, at least she could probably pull them out. Her black polka dotted saffron yellow swimsuit hadn’t seen much use this year with the necessity of night swimming in her fuku, but today she didn’t need the attention that may come with wearing such a clearly unsuitable outfit. Though, it seemed just as likely that the general public would brush it off as another Destiny City eccentric out for a swim. Long red hair braided and pinned meticulously to her head, she jetted across the water, doing her best to remember that today wasn’t about timing or strength training. Nothing to do with space travel or fighting monsters. She was taking a day off, per her not-quite-blackmail arrangement with her sisters.

inayah wasn’t entirely sure why she’d come to the reservoir. She didn’t swim—not really. And even if she wanted to, she hadn’t brought anything remotely close to swimwear. But the day was bright and warm, the sky a soft blue full of early summer promise, and the breeze off the water smelled clean. She told herself she was just out for a walk, nothing more. Her sandals clicked softly against the path as she wandered, eyes drawn to the shimmer of the water and the way people laughed nearby—splashes, music, little kids shouting in delight. It was lively without being overwhelming, and for a while she just soaked it in. When she rounded one of the curved edges of the reservoir, her attention snagged on someone cutting cleanly through the water. A girl with vivid red hair, braided and pinned like something out of a fairy tale. She was fast, and graceful—like she belonged in the water. Inayah slowed unconsciously, a little bit awed. She didn’t realize she was staring until her foot caught on a raised edge of pavement. “Ah—!” she gasped, stumbling a step before catching herself. Face burning, she glanced around quickly. Had anyone seen that? She pressed her hand to her chest, trying to will her heart to stop hammering. Maybe she should sit down for a second. Act like she meant to stop here all along. Instead, she shuffled over toward the railing near the edge and leaned against it, pretending to admire the view. The red-haired girl was still out there. Inayah found herself smiling faintly. “She’s really good,” she murmured under her breath. She didn’t recognize her, but… there was something kind of inspiring about her. Like she wasn’t just swimming—she was claiming the space around her. That kind of confidence was hard not to notice. And maybe… it made Inayah want to try, too. Eventually. Maybe. But not today.

Rowan paused mid-lap, treading water as she looked around. Still no sign of the less than friendly (or possibly too playful) creature she’d encountered in the previous weeks. Maybe it had its fill of summer fun (for a lake monster) during Starfest. Or maybe it was just shy and didn’t want to put in an appearance in front of a crowd. Before experiencing it firsthand she’d always treated the stories with skepticism, but over the past year she’d come to realize that sometimes outlandish stories were true. Somehow. Absurdly. Scanning the shore, her eyes landed on a girl who seemed to be watching her from a distance. Curiosity piqued, the young woman closed the distance between herself and the land, emerging near the railing. “Hi! How’s your morning going?” The girl’s glossy black hair complemented the warmth of her eyes, though she looked a bit less than entirely self-assured. Rowan remembered that age well, sometimes a quick chat and a bit of understanding could go a long way.

Inayah hadn’t meant to get caught staring—but it was hard not to. The redhead moved like she belonged to the water, like every stroke was a kind of dance. Graceful and strong. Everything Inayah wasn’t. So when the girl swam to shore and actually spoke to her, Inayah startled. Her eyes went wide, and she hesitated for a half-beat too long before smiling—small, uncertain, but genuine. “Oh! Um—hi.” She tucked a loose curl behind her ear, suddenly very aware of how awkward she probably looked just loitering by the railing. “It’s going okay. I was just… walking. The weather’s really nice today.” Her eyes flicked to the surface of the water and then back to the girl, a little spark of admiration peeking through her uncertainty. “You swim really well. Like—really well. It’s kind of cool to watch.” She shifted her weight from one foot to the other. “I don’t really swim myself. I never learned. But you make it look kind of easy.” A soft laugh escaped her lips. “Which I’m guessing it’s not.” Her gaze lingered a moment, curious. There was something kind about the girl, something approachable. And something else, too—Inayah couldn’t quite name it, but she’d felt a flicker of energy earlier, something she hadn’t experienced much but was slowly learning to recognize. Not dangerous. Not threatening. Just… different. But right now, she was just Inayah. And the girl in the water seemed happy to talk. “I’m Inayah, by the way.”

Rowan felt a twinge of guilt upon realizing that she’d spooked the girl, and offered a small, apologetic smile. “Sorry, I didn’t mean to startle you! It really is beautiful out though.” The sky’s deep blue clarity mirrored in the shifting light of the reservoir’s surface heightened the morning’s loveliness. Even if there were other ways to just enjoy the artificial lakeside, it seemed a shame to visit without getting in the water. Inayah’s compliment caught her off guard, and her expression grew a bit bashful. “Thank you, that’s kind of you to say.” The young woman frowned thoughtfully as the girl continued. “It is a challenge to master, I’m still working on that part. But the basics aren’t too difficult to pick up with a little practice. You know, if you wanted to give it a try I’d be happy to teach you a bit.” xdeathxbyxlovex Sorry for the delay, I've been really scatterbrained the past few days

Inayah blinked at the sudden voice, her steps slowing as she turned toward the source. For a moment, her heart jumped, but the other girl’s smile put her at ease. “Oh—no, it’s okay,” she said softly, brushing a loose braid over her shoulder. Her gaze drifted back toward the shimmering water, the sunlight dancing over its surface. “It is… really pretty,” she admitted, her voice warm with quiet awe. When Rowan mentioned teaching, Inayah hesitated. Her fingers fiddled with the hem of her shirt. “I’ve… actually never learned how,” she confessed, a small, sheepish smile tugging at her lips. “I just like walking around here. It’s… peaceful. But I don’t think I’d be very good at it.” Her eyes lingered on the ripples a moment longer, as if weighing the offer, though there was a hint of uncertainty in her expression.

Rowan listened sympathetically as Inayah spoke, recognizing the self-conscious trepidation. “It really is, and once you’re used to it, being in the water is…liberating.” Dramatic as that statement might sound, the sentiment was genuine. Swimming had been one of the only things keeping her grounded during the events of the past year or so. “If you’re curious, or nervous, or both. You can start slow. Just your feet. And don’t worry about being good, no one is good the first time they try it. Except ducklings, I guess.” She hoped that she wasn’t coming on too strong in her enthusiasm, the last thing she wanted was to scare her off. xdeathxbyxlovex Sorry for the delay! Inayah’s lips curved into a small, shy laugh at the ducklings comment, though her gaze still dipped toward the water. “I don’t know… I think ducklings have an unfair advantage,” she murmured. She shifted her weight from one foot to the other, the toes of her shoes scuffing lightly against the pavement. “Maybe… just my feet wouldn’t be so bad,” she admitted after a pause, though her tone carried the air of someone still testing the thought in her head. “But I’ve never been in water deeper than a bathtub.” Her eyes flicked up toward Rowan briefly, uncertainty mingling with a flicker of curiosity.

Rowan laughed softly, “They really do come out ready to go, it must be nice. We have to work a bit harder.”The girl’s inexperience with water came as a surprise to Rowan and she couldn’t help but admire the fact that she was even considering taking on that new challenge, especially given her apparent anxiety around the idea. “The water isn’t too cold right now if you wanted to give it a try.” She offered the girl a reassuring smile, “It’s always a little nerve-wracking to try something new, and honestly even giving the experience some thought is something to be proud of.”

nayah glanced down at the water, her hands tightening slightly around the strap of her bag. She shifted her weight from one foot to the other before speaking, her voice soft. “I don’t know…” she admitted, a hint of nervous laughter escaping. “It feels like… if I step in, I’ll just sink straight down. I know that’s silly, but it’s hard not to think about it.” “Okay… just my feet,” she said quietly, a small, nervous smile tugging at her lips. Her fingers fidgeted with the edge of her sleeve, but there was a trace of determination in her eyes now. “I think I can do that.”

Rowan nodded, “Don’t worry, I think everyone’s got something like that.” Lowering her voice to a tone of playful confidentiality she continued, “Whenever I take the subway, I worry about the wind in the tunnel sucking me off the platform.” She gave a small smile as she spoke, “So don’t worry about if those little fears are silly. And if you do start to sink, I’m here and I won’t let you go too far down.” She hoped that was enough to assure the girl, and that Inayah didn’t feel pressured, though her growing resolve Whatever the case, Rowan was entirely unwilling to let anything bad happen to her new acquaintance and stood ready to intervene on the remote chance that things went sideways.
