The Caves (5) : To any explorers visiting the new Reservoir, they may find that just a bit away from the sandy water are a set of caves. Some of these connect back to the lake, but others rapidly plunge into darkness. It wouldn't be hard to get lost in here, but thankfully there are some very odd lights to help guide you out. If you turn off your light down some of these dark paths, you may find yourself surrounded by glowing pastel lights. A closer inspection reveals that you seem to be looking at some sort of glowing caterpillars. An internet search will reveal that Destiny City scientists have been researching the strange, unnamed creatures, but the articles are very limited. If you take them out of the cave they seem to shrivel up almost immediately. They're neat, but clearly meant to be stay in their natural habitat.
Kinsey knew about the caves by the reservoir, he felt like everyone in the city knew about them, because the caterpillars in those caves were famous at this point .The sad thing was that they couldn’t be removed from the cave, to study them and find out more about them, but in a sense it made them more special. Now knowing about magic, and being apart of it, he couldn’t help but wonder if they were some byproduct of magic which accumulated in the city from all of them…from every time they used magic, from fights to teleporting to summoning weapons, there was so much which went through his mind in regard to these things. He was constantly wondering about it and contemplating how things could work, what could be going on, because it broke science and its laws in so many ways.
It was the wonder, and the promise of seeing something special, which had Kinsey entering the caves late one night. He knew the chances of running into other people, dangerous people potentially, was high but he was certain he could handle himself if need be.
Walking into the caves he had his camera with him, wanting to take pictures, he was wondering if he could make a mini replica of what he saw here. The idea of a book nook, or in this case a book cave, was floating about in his mind. It would be a wonderful idea, something he could use once he had a home of his own. There was also the idea of making a replica inside a glass enclosure…like a lantern or something similar, turn a lantern into a sort of cave. There were a lot of ideas, a lot of things he could do, and for that he needed pictures he could reference later, and so he needed to see things in person rather than listening to what other people said.
The only issue had been getting here, it was a long walk plus public transportation, it was no easy trip to get out here on his own. He had no car of his own and he couldn’t ask his family for a trip out here, they’d never do anything for him like that, so he’d waited till they were all sleeping before slipping out his bedroom window. Not worried about someone breaking in, he wouldn’t be home if someone were to break in, he’d left his window unlocked so he could let himself back in when he returned, he wasn’t going to risk going out the front door and waking someone when he was either going or coming home - not a chance.
Pushing the worries to the back of his mind, not wanting to think about the home he’d have to return to all too soon, and focused on lifting the camera to his face so he could start taking pictures as he found the glowing bugs. It was pretty - so pretty. It was awe inspiring and enchanting. Kinsey found himself losing track of time as he wandered the cave system taking pictures as he went, touching and picking up the caterpillars, he watched them crawl over his hand as he used his other hand to take pictures of them up close.
By the time he thought to get home, before he started to make his way out of the caves, hours had gone by and he was exhausted. Yawning as he headed out he wondered just how he was going to get home…he was tired, though he was also pleased with himself. Slowly, ever so slowly, he made his way from the caves and headed off to find a way home…maybe he could hail a car and get lucky? It was an idea…as unsafe as it was, and he knew it was unsafe.
