When the Fire Works (14) : Innovation is expected in Destiny City, so seasonal commodities are always expected to sell well. This year, the hot new summer item includes some chemically enhanced logs: carefully modified with environmental and health-safe chemicals, these logs are guaranteed to burn bright, burn long, and burn beautifully. It’s not just a pretty flame: each individual log has several rings that will light up like a sparkler when the flame hits. Larger logs will even pop off small, colorful fireworks for several hours while they burn. Though the lightshow is beautiful, it’s also calm. The logs have a pleasant, earthy smell, and unlike the sounds of normal fireworks, these simply sound like a crackling fire. There’s something curiously nostalgic about these fires; they are able to elicit a sort of childlike whimsy, if only you let them. If not, it’s still pretty.
It was the worst time of the year, according to Peverell. It was much too hot outside, his frizzy fur seemed to become even frizzier and people decided that launching fireworks and random times of the day, including during the day where they could barely be seen was just the greatest idea ever.
Did he like the science behind it? Sure, but he could have done without the loud noises that accompanied them. And even worse, this year they had decided to introduce chemically enhanced logs that people could buy and that were basically fireworks for the ground.
Granted, these strange logs were NOT as loud as regular fireworks, but it still made the park sound like it was constantly popping popcorn and soon became an annoyance to his better-than-a-human’s hearing ears. He had walked past several groups that had decided to burn one of the logs and had hissed at each one of them, earning laughter or “awws” from the groups. He would have loved to stay at the castle during this time, but he had needed to find some ingredients that Agents needed and being the helpful Corrupt Mauvian he was had volunteered to go and find them.
He took a moment to take a break in the shade of the tree, most likely looking like a frizzy yellow ball with an annoyed face on him, which at least one child walking past had decided he would be perfect to pet. It was only with luck that the parents were nearby to keep him from being assaulted by the children. The shade of the tree helped, but only a little. It was only now that the sun was starting to set, and he could let out a sigh that the temperature would go down to a more reasonable temperature. Unfortunately the humidity refused to let up, which meant he still felt like he was walking through a sauna while he made his way around the park, attempting to find the flowers and other wild plants that had been requested.
And then the firework sounds and popping of the logs increased and for a moment he had to hold his ears to his head, attempting to block out the sounds that they were making. Couldn’t they at least wait until the day of the holiday to do all of these activity? Then he could plan to be away from it at least!
He growled to himself as he walked a bit more, attempting to concentrate on finding what he needed, but the sounds had gotten to be too much and he needed to get somewhere quiet!
He was disappointed in himself and he hated to have to go and attempt to retrieve the ingredients on another day, but he hoped that if he did it early enough in the morning that there wouldn’t be as much noise that he had to deal with. And if there were any raccoons wandering around a laster at them should be enough to get them out of the way if they even wanted to try attacking him.
