Quote: The Fireflies (6) : In the warm summer nights, little glowing lights begin to bob and dart through the city. Fireflies are mating, so this isn't uncommon in itself; in the past few days you've probably seen hundreds of fireflies. What makes these lights so unique is that they seem to change color; you might see a blue one, a green one, a red one. They flicker randomly, and something just seems off with them. If you come into contact with one, you will find yourself with a strange electric jolt. They cannot be caught, and will flicker away if you pursue too aggressively. This isn't the first time they've appeared in Destiny City, but no one's been able to tell where they came from or where they're going. No matter how quickly you chase them, they always seem to disappear before you can find any answers. With the weather warm and things finally calming down, Chang'e wandered out into the night to see parts of this summer festival. Festivals and the like had been common enough on his homeworld, especially with the coming of the peak trade season and harvest. After passing some booths and receiving a small charm of some sort that was meant to celebrate the occasion, he noticed something flickering out of the corner of his eye. At first, he wasn't sure exactly what it was, perhaps some sort of string light or decoration that he was coming to learn were popular when it came to photoshoots and other social media things. But then he saw more of them and how the flickering and glowing was less artificial and more natural in pace. Separating from the crowd and dipping through some of the decorated trees, he started to follow the glowing lights even as they kept moving further and further from him. With less people around, he didn't worry as much about being a senshi. His outfit tended to blend in with some of the eastern asian fashion trends which made him all the more likely to remain like this instead of hiding in the glamor Brioche had made for him. The only problem was that as he wandered further from the safety of the festival and crowd, he started to feel a prickling and horrid feeling drawing closer.

They kept to the extreme edge of some of the least populated festivities in the park, staying almost entirely out of sight. There were surely more efficient ways to gather energy: Rakovanite barely needed to be around people at all to harvest from them. But Youma still tended to prefer something a little more direct. And who was he to tell Devour she couldn't indulge in her favorite treats during this festive time? As long as she made no scenes and didn't kill anyone (this time), Rakovanite decided she could be allowed to enjoy herself.
And that was easier to do while not in a central crowded area.
Rakovanite avoided everyone else entirely, staying well out of the way while Devour's abilities lured hapless souls near enough for either of them to take pretty much whatever they wanted. Rakovanite made his Youma send them away before anyone could faint or they could draw any unnecessary attention to themselves.
She was just off selecting her next victims when Rakovanite sensed it. A Senshi was near enough that it would come as no surprise to him if it was hunting his Youma specifically, though Rakovanite could see neither of them to tell for sure.
He willed her to return to his side, and even before he registered her proximity- despite knowing she was near and headed to him- her magic had caught him. Rakovanite could tell only because of the giddy (a sensation that was definitely not his own) shiver that swept up his spine, anticipation coiling through his gut, excited, excited, excited-
He shut his eyes, a frown creasing his brow. He had to will himself to pick out the pieces of her natural appearance that ensnared her targets: the soft, rhythmic click of her feet as she scuttled, the little glints and flashes of her carapace that could resemble the blips of lightning bugs at this time of year. Rakovanite opened his eyes. Devour was immediately in front of him, red eyes bright and eager and pointed teeth on full display as she craned her head down to smile at him.
The spell wasn't her fault, Rakovanite had to remind himself. When she focused on someone else, it was easier to not be caught by her. And when she focused on him... she was just excited. And it always went like this when she was excited (what was he supposed to do about it?). What had her so eager in the moment? Rakovanite would've thought it was that Senshi aura nearby. Eager- excited- enemy- mine- yours-
Perhaps, unsurprisingly, he thought wrong. She produced a small, glittering charm from seemingly nowhere, and Rakovanite had to suppress a groan at the sight. "I am not interested in the garbage you picked up during your hunt-" Which was true, but Devour, like all of his other friends and subordinates had decided that this was the curse he had been inundated with. The neon of her carapace flashed, and he was reminded of Weissite handing him a charm, of Narcissus handing him a charm, of Calaverite- Tic-tic-ticticticTICTIC- her legs clattered in vicious agitation the longer he refused her. Everyone else did it- Devour too, Devour too-
"Fine. Whatever. Thank you." He accepted with a huff, because he had to if he wanted to get to the matter at hand. That Senshi.
Taking Devour with him, Rakovanite pulled them into a teleport that landed them near enough to see the one he'd (apparently falsely) believed was chasing Devour.
The Youma twined around her general, tail at his feet as her torso contorted to twist around his back. Her hands braced on his shoulders, craning her body up so that she could stare at the enemy. Perched as she was, her entire torso hovered over Rakovanite's head, and her fingers tap-tap-tapped a quick rhythm against his shoulder, the sound coming accompanied with the cramming of flickers of images into his head- pointed ears, scaly hips- as if he could not see with his own eyes that the Senshi was an alien.
"You will frighten him if you keep being weird," Rakovanite warned, though that only seemed to make Devour more excited, excited, excited- if the clitter clatter of her legs was anything to go by.

Something was drawing nearer, and it had Chang'E freezing for a moment as he listened to try to tell what it might be. It didn't sound like a human, far too many steps, but he couldn't see anything at first between all the flickering lights of the fireflies. Among the flickering, he thought for a moment he had seen something different in the flickering, something rolled over him and had him freezing even stiffer. This feeling of elation, of giddiness, wasn't his own, and he turned ever so slowly to try and get a look. The abrupt appearance of both the thing with too many legs and another person had him standing up straight and backing away from where it felt like they were. With them appearing as they did on top of the oppressive feeling he got, it reminded him of that lovely dragon, but without all the loveliness, and infinitely more caution prickled over him. They were far too close, and he could only make out the smallest signs of them as he took slow and careful steps back. It wouldn't do well for him to worry Brioche by getting hurt, and he'd had good luck aside from other youma, so perhaps because there was someone with the youma, maybe his luck might hold out if he were careful. "I simply got lost. I have no intention to fight if you let me be." Speaking calmly but maybe a bit quickly, he kept focused ahead on where they might be, even as he ever so slowly tried to put distance between them.

There were so few things about anyone in the White Moon's ranks that Rakovanite wanted to be interested in. And, admittedly, nearly every one of them he'd crossed paths with had not made any great showing in differentiating themselves between one another. All of Cosmos' little slaves had the same 'protect the world,' 'every little drop of Chaos feels wrong,' 'I became a superhero because a cat said I was special.' Rakovanite could barely tell one from another. They all blended together to him.
The aliens were only very slightly different. He'd met a handful, and while the novelty was staring to wane, it wasn't completely absent. It was at least moderately more interesting to try and comprehend non-Earth values.
"If I wanted a fight, I would not have given you the opportunity to say otherwise." The less of their ilk who even had the opportunity to see him, let alone speak to him, the better. And Rakovanite was perfectly comfortable in giving no warning before he reached into someone's chest. As efficient as possible, leaving as little time for mistakes as could be managed.
This one was lucky he was more interesting than most. "Go away," Rakovanite stated softly. He felt more than he saw Devour's incredulousness. Send him away? One lone Senshi? He was hardly a match for the two of them together- why send him away when they could take him and eat him- then he'd be gone, gone, gone for good. 'Go away,' such a pointless thing to say. Her head craned down, long fingernails pinching at the heavy fabric of Rakovanite's coat at his shoulders.
His gaze angled from the Senshi back to the Youma, and if she'd been incredulous before, she was even more so now that she understood his meaning: her go away? He wanted Devour to leave? Why? Why? She hadn't done anything wrong, and this stupid morsel just showed up, and that was all it took for her General to send her away? An agitated tremble undulated down her length. She gnashed her teeth at him, irritable.
Sighing, he touched two fingers to her cheek, barely a pet but something close enough. "Your visage is upsetting." A fact she knew very well and was perfectly proud of. "Go away. I will call you back later."
He felt her agitation, mingled with disappointment, indignation the neon of her carapace fluttering and flashing in silent display. She went anyway, and Rakovanite looked back to the Senshi.
"You. Stay."

That chilling tidbit had him pausing in his retreat, not wanting them to change their mind about this situation he found himself in. His experiences with these agents and members of chaos had been limited, but he knew that caution was needed. Something was spoken between the man and the creature, just too low for him to hear, but thankfully, it led to one of those feelings of chaos to vanish. Before he got to ask which had gone, he heard the response and looked in that direction once more. Straining his eyes in the dark, he knew his options were limited when it came to running. Without an ally, his magic would do little to help if things fell to violence, something which he wanted to avoid if he could, for many reasons. Every so slightly, he shifted his weight toward his back foot, not yet moving but preparing to at least try to run for it if given the chance. It wouldn't take much to get back towards the crowd, and he doubted that they would want to cause that much of a commotion by pursuing him through it. They didn't sound like they could be bartered with, like the pink-haired one with that large hole in their chest. Where curiosity in him had outweighed whatever goals her side had. This was a stiffer individual, and without knowing their goals, aside from a fight, it would be hard to find something to offer so they could come to an agreement, and he could get away from this unharmed.

Rakovanite's vision was certainly subpar by Earth standards, but it was at least good enough to see the obvious tension radiating through the other man not a handful of yards away. If their places were swapped, Rakovanite wouldn't have been at ease, either. But it was still very mildly annoying that he could say, 'I am not looking for a fight,' send his ally away, and still have such a quiet and stiff adversary.
(That was probably the smartest position to take, but Rakovanite didn't need to admit that out loud).
Instead, he moved. Languidly, leisurely. Keeping a safe distance, but eyeing the Senshi as Rakovanite stepped around him. The ones from space could look so unique, with vibrant skin colors and markings, lashing tails, dog ears, gills, wings. This one could almost pass for human. Many of the strange things about him- his ears, his eyes, his fangs, his scales- could be replicated easily enough through cosmetics. It was only because Rakovanite was aware of visitors that he knew to look closer.
He stepped nearer, bringing himself within about two arms' lengths of the Senshi's side. "You can stop looking as though someone is out to get you. If my intention was to kill you, there would be no reason to waste my breath." But he could hardly help but be a little interested in someone from so far away.
"If anyone should be filled with trepidation, it should be me, hm?" He offered, tone deep and quiet. "You know what humans are capable of." He must. Rakovanite didn't get the impression that he was 'new' here, even if he hadn't been born here. "I can hardly say the same for your kind."

They were moving closer, of course they were, but nothing was sudden enough yet to make him want to risk bolting. Moving only enough to keep an eye on them, his snake-like pupils narrowed as he listened to yet another show of power. A boast like any number of high-standing merchants or traders, but not one he wanted to debate or pressure in order to call out a bluff. It wouldn't be a poor deal if things went bad here, as they said it would end with him dead. They were very close now, not enough for either to touch each other, but he knew that distance wasn't a factor for chaos so far. At least for some that he had seen. What humans are capable of? The reminder had him stilling more, remembering how things had gone terribly on this planet in the past. Fingers twitched as he reached to thumb over a few small gaps where scars broke through the scales on his right hip. They never had fully grown back even after a few sheds and what he now knew had been over a thousand years. Snapping his attention back to them, he didn't like this situation at all. History seemed to be repeating itself even now, even when he'd found success blending in with Brioche's help. "Humans have always fallen to violence when faced with the unknown... I had hoped that maybe that might have changed after so many generations." There was that tiredness there, even though he knew it might not be taken well by this enemy. "I can offer things of old, maybe something your ally might like, if you let me leave? Certainly, there must be something I can offer to excuse myself from here. " It wouldn't mean much for him to part with any of the trinkets that he had gathered while wandering, even if the jade and gems of old were valuable here. But the way he was being examined wasn't new either, just another thing that hadn't occurred in a long time either. It was always hard to tell with humans, they were so varied both in appearance and personality. It was something he liked in essence, but in practice for negotiations, it was difficult because things were never as clear-cut.

The Senshi's hand moved for his hip, and despite having literally never encountered one of their kind carrying a weapon or needing any item to channel magic, Rakovanite still had the expectation that he was reaching for a blade or a distraction or something that the General wouldn't appreciate once it was in the other's hand.
He closed the gap between them in little more than a blink, gloved palm snapping out and closing around the Senshi's wrist, holding it there, down, at his hip.
And... there was nothing there. Even so close now, Rakovanite couldn't tell what the movement was, what he'd been reaching for. All he could see were scales and fuku. Not even any pockets. His head canted, quizzical, but not enough to ask about it, instead as he warily allowed his gaze to wander back up to the Senshi's face, he said. "Not exactly what I was referring to. I expect you are aware that a human's bite has no venom and our stares cause no paralysis." Maybe he'd seen too much sci-fy, but those things seemed possible for an alien adorned in scales.
Maybe they still were, and Rakovanite just wasn't enough of a threat to unveil it yet. "It seems neither do yours," he offered. "Though are you trying to imply your world has no history of violence when frightened? You will have to forgive me, but for someone with your features-" Like a snake. "-I find that hard to believe."
Rakovanite could've rolled his eyes at the insistence that he just wanted to leave. Why be wandering around draped in a Senshi's power if you weren't trying to attract attention? The only Youma around had been Devour, and despite his initial thought that the other man might've been seeking her out, Rakovanite wasn't so sure now. So why be out like this where he could be found at all? He was still holding the Senshi's wrist. "I have no need of trinkets." And then quieter, in a mutter, "My home is full enough of them already."
"Your name. And then you can leave."

That sudden movement, that grip on his wrist, had Chang'E biting down on the urge to bolt even more. Even through the fabric of his gloves and theirs, there was no chance to break that grip, and he didn't even try as they seemed to be looking over him. In turn he got to get a clearer look over them and the odd uniform they wore, there was something ordered about it, strict and stiff that he didn't quite like that gave him more reason to be cautious. This must be one of those agents the woman had mentioned... something similar to his lovely ascended dragon, but without all the loveliness. That response threw him into his own confused glance, it sounded so much of the old of the folk tales and rumors that passed through Asia, and then potentially the other countries that must have been around that he hadn't gotten the chance to interact with back then. It almost had him bringing up that point, but then they supplied what he was about to say. At least there was some advancement away from the path that led those quick to jump into an attack from fear of those superstitions and folk tales. "Only that it is very human to fall back on violence when frightened." Offering in response, though quietly, as he looked down at where they still held him. The insinuation about his appearance always soured his mood. In the past, it had always been something more focused on for beauty and elegance, not for threat, that really had been something that seemed to come from warm-blooded planets. Just his name? It wasn't as if that could be used to track him to where he was staying with Brioche and that kind old woman at least. "Chang'E from a planet of merchants and dancers." Supplying just a bit extra just to add to the reasoning why he simply had no want to fight or to get into any sort of trouble. Conversing was something he did like to do, and under different circumstances, perhaps he could talk more with this man, but the chances were slim that things would go well with the way they seemed to think about things from what he could tell so far.
