Hesperia was having a good summer thus far, between getting to spend a lot more time with her boyfriend, her brother favoring her more than their mother, and her grandparents being more relaxed in their restrictions regarding her freedom. In fact, she had just been out on a date with her boyfriend and he had walked her up to her door after their date. After sharing a quick kiss at the door, he had apparated away from the side yard and she opened the door to her family's house. Closing the door, she leaned against it for a moment, a wide smile on her face. It was so nice to get to spend time with Kasamir outside of school and the brunette was absolutely smitten with him. Every chance they got to spend together, she wanted to. Taking a few moments to relish their alone time, Hesperia straightened and stepped into the house. She expected to smell dinner cooking and hear her grandparents' chatter coming from the kitchen. She expected her mother to be sleeping on the couch while Niko played in his pen. Instead she was greeted by the sound of silence, no smell hanging on the air. Not even the smell of the outdoors. Glancing around the living area, all the windows were closed, which was unexpected for a summer's day. "Giagiá? Pappoús? Poú eínai óloi?"

Walking further into the house, Hesperia's hand reached into her pocket and tightened around her wand. This quiet was unlike anything she'd ever experienced in the house. As she neared the stairs leading to the first floor, her nose caught a whiff of something she was all too familiar with... blood. And not just a little, the scent was strong. Drawing her wand, she crept up the stairs, skipping a few that she knew were creaking. On the landing to the upper floor of the house, she spotted the upstairs bathroom door ajar just a little bit and that was where the smell of the blood was emanating from. She could also hear the sounds of someone whimpering, followed by someone sharply shushing them. Taking cautious steps forward, Hesperia approached the door, ready to burst in and deal with whoever was in there. The thick scent of blood was overriding her sense of smell and she couldn't tell who was in there, or how many people were there. There was another problem too; the strong scent of blood was making her heart race and driving her blood lust up. Her mind was drawn back to her incident in fourth year and the terrible memories from that moment. Reaching the bathroom door, she drew in a deep breath and pushed it open.

Inside the bathroom looked like a horror show. There was a lot of blood on the floor and walls of the bathroom. Lying in the tub, wrists bound and gagged, was her grandfather and grandmother. Both of their clothes were bloody and there was the presence of cuts on them. Their eyes looked over at Hesperia and pleaded with her to run. Standing in the corner of the room was a blond man, with red eyes and deeply pale skin. He had her mother held up against him, a silvery blade glistened in the light as he pressed it against her mother's throat. She was also cut up and bloody, her hands bound and a gag in her mouth. The deep red eyes gazed at her from behind her mother. "So you must be Hesperia," the man said, a wicked smile crossing his face and revealing fangs that matched hers. "If you don't want your mother's throat slit, I suggest you throw your wand over here now." Hesperia looked from the speaker to her mother, seeing the fear in her mother's eyes. "If you hurt her, I swear to God that I will rip you limb from limb," Hesperia snarled, her wand still raised. The man grinned and moved his knife down to Ismini's forearm, slicing through the skin there and causing her cry out in pain. "Oops, looks like I hurt her. Now toss your wand here or the next slash is her throat." He moved his knife back to her throat to show he was joking.

With much trepidation, she tossed her wand over towards the man. He caught it in the air, then snapped it in half. Grinning, he dropped the two broken halves of her wand to the floor, then pushed Ismini towards Hesperia. She caught her mother and went to pull the gag from her mouth. But before she could, her hand was caught by the man and twisted behind her back. "You, tub," he said, pushing Ismini into the tub with her parents. "And you, sweet sister, are the real reason I'm here." Wait, had he just called her sister? Her mind rushed through many possibilities, but they were quickly silenced when he wrenched her arms behind her back, causing her to cry out in pain. "I'm going to kill you, sister. But first, I'm going to make you suffer." He brought his knife up to her cheek and dug the blade in, making a small cut down from her orbital bone to her jaw. She cried out in pain, then grit her teeth. "Go on, scream for me," he whispered into her ear. With a snarl, she lashed her head backwards, connecting with his nose and sending him stumbling backwards. Blood dripping from his nose, he laughed, then forced Hesperia to the floor into the pool of blood collecting there. Stepping over her, then kneeling down onto her, he said, "Oh, this will be fun."

Another slash from his knife made Hesperia scream as the blade cut up through her arm. She'd been resisting the pain up to that point, but the knife managed to graze her bone. Her scream earned a chuckle from her half-brother, who seemed to be relishing in her pain. Standing up, he flipped her over onto her back, then sat across her hips. "Do you know what it's like to watch the light leave someone's eyes as they bleed out? Their last breath playing a sweet symphony in your ears?" He leaned forward and pressed his blade against Hesperia's throat. She felt the sharp blade dig into her skin, expecting that to be the strike that took her life. Her mind flashed to her boyfriend and how much she loved him. She had hoped that they would get married after school and maybe start a family. Hesperia thought about her baby brother and how she wouldn't get to watch him grow up. She thought about Csuri and Vikram and all her other friends. Would they remember that she loved them? Her best friend was having a baby soon and Hesperia wouldn't be there to help her.

Her mother was crying actual tears, her eyes locked on her daughter. It was probably the first time in Hesperia's life that she saw actual concern for anyone other than herself on her mother's face. Her grandfather was doing his best to shield her grandmother from having to watch the torture. Hesperia's reddened eyes linked with her mother's and softened a little. Her half-brother, the murderer linked to many murders in several different countries, looked between her and her mother. "What am I looking at here? Think mommy cares about you?" He removed the blade from her neck and stood up. Walking over to the tub, he grabbed Ismini by the hair and lifted her up. The knife found her throat. "You think they could love someone like us? You're kidding yourself. My mother claimed she loved me when she secretly hated me." Hesperia gritted her teeth, then said, "My mother does love me. And if you harm her any further, I'll kill you." She pushed herself up onto her elbows, wincing in pain as her injuries shifted.

Her brother laughed and moved the knife away, licking some of her blood off of the blade. "You've still got some fire in you after all, huh?" He dropped Ismini and stepped back over towards Hesperia. The teen took the opportunity and kicked upwards between his legs. Her foot connected hard and the surprise in his eyes was apparent. "Ow ********> he yelled as he stumbled backwards. Hesperia used the moment of reprieve to grab onto the handle of the door and pull herself to her feet. Her entire body ached, but her entire family's life depended on her strength. He recovered and leapt at Hesperia. The teen managed to catch his arm holding the knife but his other arm slipped through her grasp, a punch connecting with her jaw. He arm slipped free from her grasp as she stumbled backwards. His knife wedged into the wood of the door and Hesperia brought her knee up into his gut. Her half-brother tugged the knife free and tried to slash at her, but Hes blocked the hit. A motion behind her caught her attention. There was someone in the window... on the second floor... He was motioning towards her half-brother, then made a motion that said come closer.

Hesperia shoved him, trying to get him closer to the window. She only pushed him about halfway to the window. This was it, she needed to do something. Shoving herself forward, she collided with him and pushed him into the wall with the window. At the same time, she also felt a sharp pain in her gut. Looking down briefly, she saw his knife sticking out of her stomach. Suddenly the window shattered and the man she saw appeared. He reached in a grabbed her half-brother's head, then violently twisted it to the side. Her half-brother was dead in an instant, then he was yanked out of the window and dropped to the ground below. "Call the police," the man said, then climbed up towards the roof and disappeared. Hesperia looked to her family, who had started working to untie each other. Her mother nodded, telling her to go. Holding her side, Hesperia stumbled out of the bathroom and to her bedroom. She stumbled the entire way, her vision darkening. Reaching her bedroom, she pushed open the door, dropping to her knee, crying out in pain. Struggling to her feet, she grabbed her cell phone off her bedside table and dialed the most recent number in her phone... Kasamir.

Carrying the phone in her hand, she stumbled over to Niko's bedroom. She wrenched open the door, then collapsed to the floor again. She laid on her side, bleeding on the carpet with the knife still wedged in her side. Niko stood up and looked over the side of his crib. "Hespewia? Hespewia! Hespewia!" he started to wail as her call connected to Kasamir. Every last ounce of her strength was spent pulling her phone back over to her. "Kas... help... please..." Then she felt herself losing consciousness. You have to stay awake. You can't let yourself fall asleep. Think about Kas. Think about Csuri. About Niko, and Mom, Giagia and Papou. About Alice and Vikram and Seb. About Slytherin, the team needs you. Think about everyone. You need to stay awake for them. Stay awake. Stay awake... Help is coming... Stay... awake... St...ay... aw...ake... Her heart beat was slowing. Her vision was dark. She heard her brother screaming, but it sounded so far away.

                                                                Graydon Ironshield

Kasamir Aloysius Patrovna
SlytherinSeventh YearSeventeen Years OldSingleChess GrandmasterSlytherin Prefect & Head StudentAdventurer's Guild & Chess Club Captain

It had a fun evening, spending time with Hes. That was one of the benefits of having moved to Surrey, at least when they weren’t at school, it was much easier for him to visit Hes, and less of a headache than if he were staying in St. Petersburg. It was a simple matter for him to Apparate to his great aunt’s house, arriving with a pop of displaced air inside his room. Medved looked up and made a low sound as he appeared out of thin air and was over beside him, ready to be petted. It didn’t take him long to get into more comfortable clothes, as he planned to lounge a little and do some tournament prep before calling it a night. It was then his phone trilled for attention.

A quick look at the screen told him it was Hes, and he smiled warmly. ‘No doubt making sure I got back without splinching, and chit-chat before bed,” he thought, as he answered the call. Before he could say a word of greeting, he heard Niko screaming, “Hespewia!” before hearing Hes say in a breathy whisper, “Kas … help ... please,” Kas’ blood ran cold, and he replied urgently, “Hes? Hes! What’s going on?” As he tried to get a response and was greeted only with the sound of Niko crying for his sister, Kas grabbed his school bag and his Beater bat, before Apparating away.

************************************************************

With a pop of displaced air, Kasamir materialized inside the front area of the house, and it took him a moment to look around and realize something, no everything was wrong. Hearing the baby crying upstairs, Kas shouted, “Hes? Hes?!” The young man came up the stairs, taking them two at a time, and was on the second floor in a matter of seconds. His eyes widened in horror at the sight of the blood trails on the floor, and the Beater bat slid into his hand. Knowing that if whoever caused this was still in the house, they knew he was present, Kas made no pretense of stealth.

He reached the bathroom and found a scene straight out of an abattoir as blood was splattered everywhere, and he saw Hes’ grandparents and Ismini were slowly moving about. “Help will be coming,” he told them. The Russian drew a deep breath, blocking out the horrific scene before him, and he gestured and muttered a few syllables. Ghostly whisps emanated from his fingers, tendrils of eldritch energy swiftly taking the form of a massive white furred wolf who filled the space in front of Kas. The Seventh Year whispered a few words and the wolf gave a low huff of acknowledgement before he started loping off, gaining speed with each step before he vanished through a window and was gone.

With his messenger sent off to bring the Aurors, Kas followed the trail of blood to the room where he could hear Niko. Seeing the baby, he was grateful to see the little boy was unharmed, more scared than anything else, but when he saw Hes sprawled on the floor with a knife buried to the hilt in her gut, it was as though the world had crashed down upon him. “O, boze, Khes!” he exclaimed in horror as he dropped to his knees beside her. Her face had the white to the bone look of deep shock, her skin was already tinged with gray. “Don’t do this, baby. Stay with me, I’m right here!”

Kas flipped open the flap of his school bag and pulled the first aid kit from its depths. He knew that if the knife was pulled free, there would be more blood flowing from the wound, as it was helping to plug it, at least to a degree, but he knew he needed to get the thing sticking obscenely from her stomach out before he did anything else. Kas got out the compression bandage and peeled the backing loose before counting three. In one motion, he drew the knife smoothly from Hes’ stomach, tossing it aside with one hand, while clamping the bandage over the wound with the other.

The young man quickly shifted his attention to the vicious wound in Hes’ arm, the blood shifting from blue to purple and then to red before his eyes. Kas folded the muscle and skin over before wrapping her arm in gauze, burning through a roll in a trice. As he worked, Kas started singing a Greek lullaby, as much to calm the baby as to steady his nerves and maybe reach Hes whose eyes were closed. Tossing aside the empty spool, Kas cast a Healing Charm, gesturing with a hand, rather than taking time to get out his wand.

He felt a measure of his own lifeforce get pulled from his body as he cast the magic, but an amber glow radiated from his fingers as he traced the wounds on her arm, her stomach and on Hes’ beautiful face, which resembled more a death mask than anything else. Cradling his girlfriend’s head and shoulders in the crook of his arm, Kas grabbed the Blood Replenishment Potion from his emergency kit. Popping the lid of the potion, he carefully poured the contents of the vial down her throat. “Stay with me, baby, please stay with me,” his voice catching as he tried hard not to think the worst. “Pl-please, please, d-don’t leave me too…”

At least her family was safe, the strange man had definitely killed her half brother, there was no question about that. Niko was safe as well. It seemed that the crazy man had missed him altogether. That was good. She could die happy knowing that they were all safe and alright. But what about Kasamir? She couldn't just leave him like that. And Csuri? God knew that her best friend was going to need help, especially with the baby coming. And Giagia and Papou were getting too old to handle the shop and a toddler... Someone needed to look after Mama too. She couldn't leave them all either. And what about her other friends? And the Quidditch team? If she died, what would happen to them? Kasamir, he could definitely run the team for a year, but he'd be too broken if she died. No... he might die himself if she died. Hesperia couldn't leave him. She loved him too much. She wanted a future with him. ********, she wanted to do so much with him! She couldn't die! Like Hell was she going to let that stupid p***k kill her! It seemed so serene and yet, Hesperia was fighting like hell to get away from that serene feeling.

Her heart was barely beating at this moment, her vital life force barely enough to sustain her and yet, she was fighting like hell. The major wounds were being closed as she tried to fight her way back to consciousness. She had to get back to him, back to everyone. As she pushed through everything, what had become serene and peaceful started to become loud and painful. Pushing away from that serenity hurt. Her head throbbed, her arm ached, her stomach screamed in pain. And yet, Hesperia continued to choose that over the bright serenity offered to her. She continued to push, feeling pain all throughout her body. God, she was so cold. Why was she so cold? Her entire hurt but also, everything felt as though it was freezing. This kind of cold should make her shiver and yet, she couldn't move her body at all. It was like she was wading through a frozen river but she still pushed forward away from the verdant green of the serenity. Everything hurt. Slowly, her fingers started to move. She heard someone singing a familiar sound. As she started to come to, that voice came closer until it was right on top of her. She knew that voice. Her desperate call had gone through. Brown eyes fluttered open, tears streaming down from them. "Kas," she whispered weakly, a small smile touching her lips.

Downstairs, the door burst open and the sounds of several footsteps echoed through the house. Niko, who had calmed down from the lullaby, leapt to his feet again and stood in his crib. The footsteps spread throughout the house and several made their way up the stairs. "Auror Office! Make yourself known!" A voice from the back weakly called out, "Back bedroom, first door! Please help my daughter!" Ismini called out, pushing them to go help Hesperia first. The footsteps hurried to the back and a man appeared in the doorway, spotting the Kasamir cradling Hesperia. "We need a mediwizard upstairs right now!" He knelt down beside Kasamir, then spotted the knife beside him. "Is that what caused these wounds? Is the subject still around?" His second question was answered almost immediately when a silvery fish swam upstairs and informed the Aurors that there was a dead body outside and that he matched the description of the man responsible for the murders of several half vampires across England. The mediwizard appeared in the doorway, then knelt beside Kas, telling him to let her examine Hesperia. After a couple moments, she apparated Hesperia and Kasamir to St. Mungo's.

It had been about a couple weeks since the home invasion and her terrifying brush with death at the hands of her murderous half-vampire half-brother. Hesperia had only spent a few days at the hospital before being released and returning home. But almost immediately, the night terrors had started and thankfully for her, Kasamir had been more than willing to spend the night for a while. Csuri had volunteered to cover for Kas when he was going out of town for his tournament and his trip to Russia. Alice also volunteered to stay over with her to help her with her fears. Having friends and loved ones around to look after her while she was getting back on her feet was a big benefit. Another surprising change in the house was her mother. Ismini had been helping around the house often, cleaning and cooking, looking after Niko, and helping Giagia and Papou at the shop. She was taking a lot of weight off of Hesperia's shoulders so that the teen could relax and recuperate. Hesperia was also dealing with waves of the sads in between the nightmares.

On the night, Kasamir was sleeping over on the couch, and as she had done every single night that he was over, Hesperia had come downstairs and climbed onto the couch with him. She had been cuddling against him under the blanket when she had a nightmare and snapped awake. The windows were open but they were latched so that they couldn't be pulled open any further. An unfamiliar smell was carried on the wind, through the windows, and into the living room. Hesperia sniffed the air and immediately her heart started to race. She grabbed her new wand off the table beside the couch and slipped off the furniture. Creeping to the window, Hesperia looked out it carefully, spotting the figure standing by the road almost instantly. The new moon made it dark on the street and he would be imperceptible if not for her enhanced senses. The figure turned towards the house and then started to make its way towards the house. Hesperia gripped her wand tightly and ducked under the window. Glancing across the room at Kas sleeping on the couch, her heart hammered. She could cross the room and wake him, but she'd be visible to the figure that had made its way to the door.

She crawled against the wall over to the front door, leaning against the wall by the door. Her heart was hammering so loudly in her ears that she almost couldn't hear the figure shifting outside. She sat there and listened to the figure shifting outside for several long minutes wondering what was going on. Carefully, she moved to her feet and peeked through the peephole. Standing on the porch was a cloaked figure, currently facing away from her. Then he turned and Hesperia flashed back to the night she was tortured and almost died. She knew this face. There were some similarities between him and her half-brother, but more than that... he was the man she'd seen outside the window of the bathroom. He was the man that had killed her torturer. Tugging open the door, she pointed her wand at him, grit her teeth and said, "Identify yourself right now or I swear to God I'll kill you." The figure raised his hands, knocking his hood off of his head. He was a young blond male who was very handsome aside from the blood red eyes and the pale nature of his skin.

The figure grinned, revealing a pair of fangs, long canines that made her fangs look like normal teeth. "Would you mind lowering your wand and not threatening your savior?" When Hesperia didn't budge, he sighed and kept his hands raised up over his head. "I'm Lucien Bloodraven, and you are my daughter." He introduced himself and commented that she was his daughter, which made Hes raise her eyebrow. She didn't lower her wand, but she did examine the man claiming to be her father. There were some similarities between him and her. Hesperia didn't exactly look like her mother, after all. "Say I believe you, why are you here?" Brown eyes examined the man, looking for any attempt at movement, any chance that he might attack her. Lucien kept his hands raised since his daughter still had her wand pointed at him. "Well, I could say I wanted to connect with my daughter and get to know her. Or maybe I wanted to see the person I killed my son to save. There are lots of reasons I could say I'm here for."

Hesperia's lip quivered when he mentioned killing his son to save her, his daughter. She remembered the look on the man's face when their father had grabbed his head through the broken window and twisted it. She remembered watching the life disappear from his eyes just before his body was tugged out the window. "Why? Why did you do that?" she asked, her voice getting shaky. Hesperia gripped her wand tightly, gritting her teeth and trying her best not to cry. Lucien reached his hand out slowly until it hovered over her wand, then he gently pushed it downward. Hesperia didn't stop him as he lowered her wand, but he didn't attempt to grab it away from her. "Jean was sick in his head. After his mother passed away last year, he got this idea in his head that he was going to punish me for it. His plan was to kill all of my children around the world, then me to inherit my fortune. It took me a while to figure out what was going on. By then, he'd killed seven half-vampires in Germany and France. I tracked him back to the UK, but missed him at his first two attacks. I managed to catch him here." Hesperia listened as he explained that the man who'd tortured her had killed nine people across three countries. He explained that he'd done what he had to stop someone who was crazy from killing again. "But why me?" she said, her voice breaking and tears streaking down her cheeks.

Lucien shrugged and took a step towards Hesperia, but the girl quickly took several steps back before raising her wand again. Lucien stopped, then raised his hands again. "I don't know. I don't even know how he found out you were my child. Like I said, he was sick." Hesperia sank to her knees and sobbed. It was random. She was randomly selected to be tortured and murdered by a psychopath simply because of who her father was. And he'd just been lucky to catch her half-brother here before he'd killed her. She was targeted by random happenstance and she'd survived by sheer luck as well. "I don't even know your name. I know you're my daughter by your smell. And you have my fiery temper," he added with a grin. Hesperia looked up at him again, then said, "How can you be so nonchalant about all this? You killed your son. He tortured me. Stabbed me. I... I almost died." Lucien shrugged and responded, "I've been alive almost three hundred years. I've fathered many children over the years. You develop a certain nonchalance over the years." Hesperia didn't like his answer and pushed herself up to her feet, pointing her wand at him again. This time he didn't raise his hands, but instead let out a tired sigh. "I don't accept that. And I don't want or need anything from you. I'm not giving you my name. I'm not talking to you any longer. Go away. Leave me alone!" She reached out and slammed the door in his face, then leaned against the door and slid to the floor, sobbing and clutching at her head.

It had been a couple of weeks since Kas nearly lost the love of his life. After practically taking up residence at the hospital to keep company with Hes, she was back home. Though the house was cleaned repeatedly, Kas swore there were times he saw the blood still splattered everywhere, particularly at night. The incoming Seventh Year found him needing to get up in the middle of the night, feeling an urgent need to know everything was as it was when he went to bed. He never mentioned this, certainly not to Ismini, who seemed to have turned a new leaf and was an active member of her own household these days, not to his hosts, and definitely not to Hes. As he promised, he was staying the nights there as Hes couldn’t handle sleeping in the house, at least not yet.

As it stood, the trip to Bangkok for the tournament went well. He faced high-ranking masters and other grandmasters and performed well. He got to see some of the sights around the city and tried some of the local cuisine. Kas would have preferred to have Hes with him, as much to have her company as it would have done her good to have a change of scenery. In addition to bringing home cookbooks to try making some of the foods he tried, he brought gifts back, with Hes getting a beautiful silk dress and jewelry.

The other impending trip was to St. Petersburg so Talya could spend time with her family, her friends, and her horses. However, Kas couldn’t say with any certainty which grouping had primacy in her priorities as she dearly missed all of them. Again, he wanted Hes with him for her company, and for the change of scenery she needed, but knew it wasn’t to be. Alice offered to act as Hes’ companion in his stead while he escourted Talya home and then back to England. Admittedly, he also wanted to see his family, and he wanted Hes to meet his grandparents, especially since he was practically living in the Argyris Household at the moment.

Thinking about Alice made him smile, as they were selected to be Head Students, and Alice proposed a Christmas Festival. It was a project that he took to with enthusiasm, and already had ideas sketched out in a notebook for her to look over. He asked Talya for some thoughts, as she was more of an artist than he could ever claim to be, which he added to his own. After what Bee and Charlotte put together for last spring, Kas knew the bar was set high, and he was confident he and Alice could deliver.

Kas was worried for the lady in and of his life; it was as though her brush with the Veil cost her a measure of her soul. He saw her struggling, and understood her feelings of sadness better than most, just as he knew what her night terrors were like, having endured all that and more in the years since his own brush with death. It wouldn’t be the first time he woke up in the middle of the night because Hes had a nightmare, and they would cuddle so she could calm down and find peace enough to rest. Tonight was different when he heard her yelling at somebody and the front door slamming.

The black-haired Seventh Year was instantly awake and alert, rolling off the couch and ready to do … something, yet nothing was happening and nobody was there, save for Hes, who was sitting against the front door, sobbing inconsolably and clutching at her head. Walking over to the front window, he peered about outside, concerned about another invasion. He triple-checked that the locks on the door were secure before sliding down to sit next to Hes. Pulling her close, so she could lay her head on his shoulder if she wished, and without saying a word, he simply kissed her cheek and began stroking her long hair.

I, I'm a one-way motorway; I'm a road that drives away, then follows you back home
I, I'm a streetlight shining; I'm a wild light, blinding bright, burnin' off and on

It's times like these you learn to live again; It's times like these you give and give agan
It's times like these you learn to love again; It's times like these time and time again

I, I'm a new day rising; I'm a brand-new sky to hang the stars upon tonight
I, I'm a little divided; Do I stay or run away and leave it all behind?

It's times like these you learn to live again; It's times like these you give and give again
It's times like these you learn to love again; It's times like these time and time again
