🌈 Who We Are

The Nani'Kai are a colony that worships the ocean and the life that it brings. They live by, hunt in, and shape their lives around the sea and its ever-changing tides. They strongly believe that all life comes from the ocean, and when they pass their souls return to the ocean to be reincarnated as sea life and continue on the endless cycle. They regularly make offerings and host ceremonies to give thanks to the mother ocean for their successful hunts, pray for calm weather, or attempt to appease her if they feel they have upset her after a hurricane.

They are generally an easy-going group, often regarded as "lazy beach bums." Life moves slowly for the Nani'Kai, as they often find themselves relaxing more than rushing to complete important tasks. Such is the life of living in a tropical paradise! In-fighting, evil or harmful individuals, and violence will not be tolerated, and if need be, they will show the full force of the ocean's chosen to expel those who break the harmony.

That being said, everyone outside of those with ill intentions are welcome within the colony. Trade is open and bustling as the ocean brings many treasures that the colony members are willing to exchange for outside goods with others.

People can come and go as they please. Members are actively encouraged to go out and establish connections, discover new adventures, form trade partnerships with neighbors, and return with new exciting stories to tell!

🦈 Apperance and Species Welcome

Main species:
Everyone is welcome! Though this will be primarily a Ma'ome-based colony, all species are encouraged to join if they feel they fit in with the colony's lifestyle. Please just include a reason for joining in your application.

Companions:
All companions are welcome! The Saloli'tsula are the most prized companions for their quick speeds, rock climbing abilities, and nimble hands that aid with crafting.

Many Kamama'tsula are found in the jungle natively and make for common companions for Nani'Kai.

Appearance:
While there are no strict color or marking requirements in the Nani'Kai you will often find family lines with cooler-toned coats. Blues, purples, whites are commonly found. With dark browns and tan colored coats being the second most common colors. Often, their coat texture is vastly different from normal Ma'ome in other regions, with dense, coarse, wiry curls. These curls are remarkably water-resistant and help keep the native Nani'Kai cool, even in the tropical climate. Even outsiders who choose to join the Nani'Kai find, over time, that the humid air and sea salt coating their fur cause their hair to naturally change into a loose curly texture.

Almost all Nani'kai wear personalized tattoos that are ritually engraved under the skin, with their fur dyed using special tools. These tattoos hold deep cultural meaning, making it very uncommon to see a Nani'kai without at least one. They often depict heroic deeds, cultural stories that have resonated personally with the Nani'Kai from a past life lesson, or other important aspects of their daily lives that they take pride in displaying.

A Nani'Kai's first tattoo is a cause for great celebration and is commonly a secondary part of their coming-of-age ceremony to enter the colony as a full adult. Although not permitted to receive real tattoos until they have completed their Ho’o Kanakaka Makua, it is not uncommon for youngsters in pretend play to paint themselves with bright colors to mimic their tattooed elders.

Naming Conventions
There are no hard-set name requirements with the Nani'Kai! But typically, children born within the colony have Pacific islander themed names.

🌺 Important Cultural Notes:

Flowering wearing: The females of the Nani'kai typically wear flowers tucked behind their ears. These flowers represent their current relationship status. A flower on the left side traditionally signifies that she is in a relationship, married, or otherwise unavailable. While a flower on the right side traditionally signifies that she is single and available.

Tattoos: Almost all Nani'kai get tattoos to proudly showcase their heritage and achievements. These tattoos are strictly something that only a Nani'kai member is allowed to receive and must be earned at some point in their lives. Children are not allowed to receive tattoos until they are adults, regardless if they feel they have earned one or not!

Ai Ha'a (Warrior's chant): Before any battle or major ceremony, the Pohaku will perform the Ha'a. This is to invoke the protection and strength of the Storm Father, who is believed to be the God of War.

Dance and its importance: Dance and storytelling are deeply connected to the Nani'Kai. Traditional dance involves every step having a meaningful purpose, and each movement narrates a piece of an ancient story.

User Image

The Nani'Kai is an ancient colony with a rich history spanning many generations. It has traditionally considered the eastern beaches its heartland, as evidenced by numerous Ki'i statues scattered across the landscape and colorful hieroglyphic paintings on seaside cliffs, each depicting a story from the past. Historically, the Nani'Kai were renowned explorers with an ever-expanding network, sending regular expeditions to discover, claim new lands, and forge connections. Over time, however, the colony's ideals shifted from peaceful exploration to greed-driven conquest. Their reputation changed from peaceful cultural seekers to aggressive invaders. They expanded their empire through violent warfare and took pride in their military might. Eventually, like many great empires, it collapsed under its own weight due to overconfidence, internal strife, corruption, and natural calamities such as famine and disasters.

The empire was no more; instead, only a sliver of their former numbers continued to hold their ancestral home.

Te'Fiti was born three generations after the collapse, only knowing the colony as a shadow of its former self. She was raised on the ideals of trade, family, and heavily focused on the worship of the Ocean Mother. Life on the surface was peaceful, happy, and filled the young Ma'ome with pride.

Beneath the surface, a darker truth emerged. The chief and council were not lying content with their idyllic beach lifestyle. They understood fully that they lacked the numbers to reclaim their old approach of war and dominance through military force. Instead, they plotted to expand their colony's power by merging neighboring colonies into their fold via trade and marriage alliances, promoting their religion through heavy indoctrination, and establishing a paradise so heavenly sounding that people would eagerly desire to join.

It is said that the Ocean Mother seeing the darkness in the hearts of her wayward children finally had enough. They were lost in their own greed and desire for power, and they had lost the peace-loving ways that the colony had originally been founded on.

For too long, they had spilled the blood of others into her waters to further their own agenda; now she would have them repay their debts tenfold.

During a large ceremony in the middle of the night to celebrate, party, and regale their stories of past conquest, a great tsunami struck the Nani'Kai. With no warning system in place and the night blanketing the normal tell-tale signs of danger to come, the Nani'Kai were hit completely unaware. Many were instantly swept out to sea as they were right on the beach enjoying their celebrations. Only those who had decided to retire from the celebrations early - or not to go at all like in Ti'Fiti's case - survived the night.

When dawn arrived, the survivors could only watch in horror as their once beautiful beach home was transformed into a gruesome spectacle. The cleanup was enormous, and with only a few members of the colony remaining, many immediately abandoned the effort, convinced that the Ocean Mother had forsaken them and wanted them gone. Others remained, slowly working to bury the dead and clear the wreckage. Eventually, they too left, overwhelmed by the lack of reliable food, the threat of disease without proper medical facilities, and the dangers of the upcoming Father's Wake season, which made staying too risky.

Ti'Fiti carried on, however. Why? She couldn't honestly say. In part, survivor's guilt, a larger part out of sheer stubbornness, she persisted in rebuilding her home and setting up the necessary parts of everyday life. It was hard, it was lonely, and it was slowly driving her insane. Until she found a gift had been left on one of her traveler's emergency caches. A small gesture that moved her deeply. She left her own gift in return for the traveler, not expecting it to turn into a long exchange of anonymous gifts. Eventually, she met her mysterious pen pal, fell in love, and had children. She explained her family's past and how she longed to rebuild her home for her - and now their children - to enjoy and prosper in. Mountain encouraged her dream, and the two of them committed themselves to working to renovate the old, worn colony lands into a new, enticing paradise that was actually fit to be lived in. They vowed to uphold the honorable, peaceful ways of the past and avoid repeating the same mistakes of the Nani'Kai ancestors.

And thus, the Nani'Kai was reborn.

🐬 Marriage / Breeding

Marriage:

Marriage is the pinnacle of commitment between two souls in the Nani'Kai, and it is believed to forever link them together in both the living realm and the realm of the dead. It is a sacred and honored commitment believed to bring two halves of the same soul back together as one that the Ocean Mother mistakenly split apart during creation. A special ceremony is held between the two families, binding them together in matrimony, under the blessings of the Ocean Mother.

While divorce is rare and generally discouraged, it is not outright prohibited. You must meet with the council and the chief to present your reasons for seeking a divorce. (OOC, please just apply for a separation in the member's updates) You need to provide a valid reason and explanation for why the marriage didn't work. If approved, the council and chief will announce to the colony that the tides of fate temporarily misaligned, and that the couple’s realization of their incompatibility was a natural part of fate's course as the two souls rejected being bonded together with one that wasn't their other half. The divorce is seen as restoring the proper flow of destiny.

Multiple divorces are nearly unprecedented and will likely lead to a request for your removal from the colony, as your actions do not align with the ocean's culture and values.

Quote:
Same-Sex Marriages: Allowed ✅
Inter-species Marriages: Allowed ✅
Marriage to those outside of the colony: Allowed ✅
Main Species to Companion: Not Allowed ❌
Underage Marriage: Not Allowed ❌
Incest Marriages: Not Allowed ❌
To be marriage-eligible, two members must be at least second cousins to avoid interbreeding.
Forced / Arranged Marriages: Generally Not Allowed, please consult with Lavenadel to get approval if wanting to plot this within Nani'Kai 🛟

Breedings:

Children born to a married couple are a celebrated and welcomed addition to the family. The parents will be honored with a visit from the council and chief to congratulate them on their new additions to their family and given a special leave of work duties for the first few weeks of their children's lives, and allowance of food and any supplies they need provided by other members of the colony to encourage them to focus on the critical first few weeks and adjusting to becoming new parents!

If two members have a night of fun and find themselves with children, they are highly encouraged to get married to maintain a healthy parental relationship for the children, avoid inbreeding between too many family lines, and keep the ocean in harmony; however, it is not a requirement. The colony understands that accidents happen and will not condemn the two for their actions.

Rogue breedings are also open and available. They are seen as a critical aspect for maintaining a healthy breeding population within the colony. Rogue breedings are seen as a blessing from the Storm Father, who brings new life and often unexpected surprises along with him when he visits.

All new parents, whether if they conceived while married, unmarried, or from a rogue breeding, they will be seen to have received extra blessings from the ocean; they will be asked to make additional offerings during the next semi-annual ocean offering ceremony as thanks for the Ocean Mother (or Storm Father in the case of rogue breedings) for blessing them with new life.

🐚 Religion

Core Beliefs:
The Ocean is obviously the most important thing to the Nani'Kai's lives. They live, breathe, hunt, and die all surrounding the ocean. All life comes from the ocean and eventually will return to it once their time on the dry land has come to its end. Honoring the great Ocean Mother for her gifts is the goal of most religious ceremonies.

Not all Nani'Kai are required to be religious zealots especially those who are joining from the outside, but they are required to participate in the annual offering of thanks as those who partake in the ocean's offerings and respect the teachings of the Ocean Mother. Disrespect for the ocean's blessings and teachings will not be tolerated and will result in the offender being permanently exiled from the colony.

All religious ceremonies and communication with the Ocean Mother are handled through the sea priests and priestesses. These individuals decide to pursue this path in life willingly and devote themselves to keeping the colony safe by appeasing the ocean through offerings and prayer. They work closely with the chief if anything is out of balance and needs to be addressed ASAP.

Deities:

🌊 Ocean Mother: The main goddess of the Nani'Kai. They believe they are her sacred children and are blessed with her gifts. If a natural disaster strikes, it is believed that they have upset the Ocean Mother in some way and must work to appease her and regain her favor.

🌀 Storm Father: The secondary god of the Nani'Kai and husband of the Ocean Mother. Storms are seen as both a good and bad omen depending on the circumstances. Mild storms are seen to bring new life as they refresh the ocean and the surrounding jungle, and often wash precious items ashore. Rogue breedings and found children are attributed to the Storm Father as just another one of his gifts finding its way to the shore. Hurricanes are often seen as bad omens and signs that the Storm Father's wrath has been sent by the Ocean Mother.

🌙 Moon Sister: Younger Sister to the Ocean Mother and caretaker of the deceased. The Nani'kai respect and honor the beloved younger sister of the Ocean Mother. They believe that the moon's power over the ebb and flow of the tides is a sign of the younger sister's love and playful nature. When the tide is strong and coming in, the Moon Sister is having fun teasing her sister, while when the tide ebbs out, she is back at rest with her own domain. The Moon Sister is a fickle creature, coming and going as she is a young, free-spirited goddess. The Ocean Mother—and the colony in turn—celebrates when the Moon Sister is large and in full presence, high in the night sky. They believe that it's at this time that the link between the ancestors and the living is at its strongest. Good luck and spiritual revelations are often reported during full moons, and children born under a full moon are believed to be blessed with a life full of luck, happiness, and love.

On the flip side, the new moon is a time of quiet reflection and fear for everyone in the colony. Believing that the Ocean Mother is in mourning at the loss of her sister, her normal protection and guidance are lost during this time, allowing evil spirits to roam the land freely to cause misfortune. Trade and normal commerce are prohibited during this time, as any deals or crafts are sure to be fated for disaster. Members are advised to remain close to their homes for their safety, and the guards are on high alert to ensure the safety of the colony. Children born under a New Moon are regarded with pity for they are believed to be cursed with bad luck, ill-fate, and early deaths. Priests and Priestesses will attempt to mitigate these curses through ritual and offerings, but ultimately, children born during this time are believed to be hidden from the Ocean Mother and the Moon Sister, as they did not enter this world under their blessed sight.

🌴Forest Spirits: The surrounding jungle that lines the beaches of the Nani'Kai's territory is thought to be filled and surrounded by nymph-like forest spirits. Mischievous, playful, and childlike, they are attributed to harmless pranks being played on the members of the Nani'Kai. Lost items, faces painted while sleeping, and stones being moved in the night are all common occurrences that members will simply sigh and shake their heads at. They are an annoyance but a central part of life since they are the very lifeblood and spirit of the trees that protect and shelter them.

🗿 Ancestor Spirits: It is believed that all souls return to the spirit realm deep in the ocean, where they are cared for by the Moon Sister and Ocean Mother. They can reincarnate in the form of various sea animals to visit their relatives and loved ones, offering support, protection, and guidance. In times of crisis, the ancestor spirits are believed to advocate for leniency and protection for the colony with the Ocean Mother. Because they are a direct earthly tie to the Ocean Mother's ear, the spirits of the ancestors are deeply revered. Stone-carved statues line the cliffside and more remote beaches in the Nani'Kai's territory, each representing a pasted-on member of the colony and acting as an anchor to guide them home.

🔥Volcano Goddess: The Ever-Growing Child of the Ocean. The Nani'Kai's lands are constantly growing and changing as an active volcano lies to the north side of their lands. This volcano regularly erupts with slow-moving magma flows, which seep into the ocean and contribute to the land's further growth. The Volcano goddess is seen as the Ocean Mother's child, and the eruptions are akin to a child's natural growth. Like any child, though, the volcano can erupt in an explosive tantrum, releasing a massive eruption. It is the priest and priestess' jobs to make offerings and offer prayers to lull the child goddess back to a calm state.

User Image

🪼 Laws:
The colony runs on pretty simple general rules for all members and visitors to keep harmony and peace:

Love thy fellow beach bum.
No Violence against other members or visitors is allowed. Period. Those rowdy individuals who might find themselves in brawls will be given one warning to refrain from such behavior and do better. If they continue or are found engaging in violent actions again, they will be exiled from the colony and barred from re-entry.

Honor the Ocean Mother and her blessings.
This means please do not use the Ocean Mother's name in vain, and more importantly, respect the environment. Overfishing, littering, and general abuse of the natural resources that the colony has been gifted will not be permitted, as they are seen as massive acts of disrespect to the Ocean Mother.

Ohana means family, and family means no one gets left behind!
Family units are extremely important to the Nani'Kai. If one is found mistreating their family members, whether that be their children, parents, siblings, or any other close family members, they will face rejection by most of the colony for their actions, at the best of cases, and removal from the colony for more serious offenses.

Respect those blown in by the wind.
Trade and visitors are always welcomed and encouraged within the Nani'Kai. Intolerance of outsiders or mistreatment of guests is not allowed. Those who choose to join the colony who were not born within it are just as welcome into the ohana as anyone who was naturally born.

Justice is through the legal system.
The council and the chief play a critical role in handling disputes and criminal cases. They are the ultimate authority in these cases and will not tolerate those who believe they can dispense their own vigilante justice. Criminal cases will be heard before the council and the chief to ensure a fair trial and unbiased arguments. If a case is too close to the council or even the chief's personal interests, it is up to the other members of leadership to temporarily reassign someone to stand in their place.

Laws are subject to change as needed. All law changes will be officially announced OOCly and canonly to ensure clarity.

Nani’Kai’s territory encompasses a diverse landscape of beachfront and tropical jungle on the continent’s far eastern edge. Although its size is currently modest, it is expected to grow as the colony expands and reclaims land that was lost during the last great tsunami.

Quote:
Biome: Southeastern Grasslands.
Climate: Tropical—hot, humid, with frequent rainstorms maintaining lush, overgrown vegetation. The colony faces its highest risk during an annual hurricane season called “The Father’s Wake,” when tropical storms and severe weather are most likely.

🏝️ Landmarks:

User Image
Kaiāulu:
The jungle serves as the central hub and home to the Nani'Kai neighborhood center. Typically, members settle here and construct open-air dwellings using logs and vines to accommodate large family groups. These structures help keep them dry amid frequent rainstorms, elevate them from the wet ground, and shield them from many insects. The trees offer protection and cover that the beach cannot, safeguarding the structures from damage caused by heavy winds during the Father’s Wake season and flash floods.

Mahina Falls and Huko’Loko:
The jungle's center is bisected by a large river that overflows with the stunning Mahina Falls, flowing into the circular lake called Huko’Loko. The Huko’Loko is thought to serve as a direct connection to the spirit realm and functions as a mirror through which the Moon Sister perceives the world. Because of its connection with the Moon Goddess, the Mahina Falls experience a unique phenomenon: Moonbows!

The Huko’Loko serves as the central hub of The Village, where the Nani’kai frequently build their homes nearby for easy access to fresh drinking water and freshwater fish for easy breakfasts.

Cenotes:
Scattered throughout the jungle are various natural sinkholes. Some are small, just a few feet apart, while others can be hundreds of feet wide. The water in these sinkholes is usually crystal clear because it is naturally filtered through volcanic rock. Some cenotes are popular spots for swimming and fishing by the Nani’kai. Certain cenotes are connected by deep underwater channels directly to the ocean and can be found in unique biomes that harbor diverse flora and sea life. Although highly discouraged, it’s a common dare for youngsters to dive and swim through these channels to reach the ocean, testing their swimming skills and breath-holding ability.

Historically, these cenotes were used for ritual sacrifices to the Ocean Mother, and evidence of this can still be seen in the crystal-clear water if one looks closely. Sites known as ritual grounds are considered ancestral burial sites and are off-limits for swimming out of respect for those ancestors who paid the ultimate price.

User Image
The Beach:
Of course, this is where most daily activities take place! After leaving their Jungle homes each day, the Nani’Kai usually migrate to the beach to start their daily routines. The beach is a lively hub of activity, almost always crowded with Nani’Kai going about their business. It serves as the primary location for fishing and hunting small game, but also functions as the social center where members converse and interact throughout the day. You will frequently see smaller groups of different ranks working on their tasks—artisans working on their latest projects, builders gathering resources, performers rehearsing, and children playing while nannies keep watch. Generally, important or lively happenings tend to occur on the beach.

A large trade bizarre sits at the center of the beach. This is where visitors and traders are invited to come and browse the wares that the Nani’kai have to offer.

Along the beach, there are large stone basins used to store kindling and flint stocks. Guards strike the flint with their claws to light the kindling, serving as the colony's emergency alarm system. These basins are triggered if scouts detect danger, signaling the colony to scatter to higher ground or to the cliff caves if they are close enough and physically able to make the climb. This project is vital for the chief, who aims to learn from the past tsunami tragedy to improve safety and foster a more conscious environment.

The Cliffs:
On the south side of the territory, large outcroppings of high, shallow cliffs rise above the beach. These cliffs feature several cave systems that can be reached by those nimble and skilled in rock climbing. While not suitable for long-term living, the higher caves are useful for emergency storage, and the lower caves provide quick-access shelters for members in the event of an emergency.

These cliffs are also home to the Ki’i, or ancestor statues, which come in various sizes. Scattered along the cliffs, they gaze down on the colony with pride and provide silent protection. When a member of the Nani’Kai passes away, their loved ones commission a Ki’i in their likeness from one of the colony's artisans. The family then personalizes the statue by carving marks, tattoos, and details into the stone with their claws, ensuring each is unique to the deceased. In the past, these statues were carved from large rock slabs or directly into the cliffside, but today they are typically made from smaller boulders, usually 1 to 2 feet tall.

The Mimilo:
On the south side of the territory lies a unique half-moon bay beneath the cliffs, characterized by a persistent, fierce whirlpool. This site holds profound spiritual significance, as it is believed to function as a direct conduit for offerings to the Ocean Mother. Access is strictly restricted; visitors are prohibited, and even members may only visit during special ceremonies, such as the Ho’okupu. Guards are stationed at the entrance around the clock to prevent unauthorized entry, both due to the danger of being pulled into the whirlpool and to avoid upsetting the Ocean Mother with unworthy offerings.

Only the chief and senior religious leaders have unrestricted access to the Mimilo.

Loihi:
This is the active volcano on the northern part of the area, believed to be the home of the volcano goddess. It is characterized by almost continuous eruptions, with larger events occurring occasionally. Due to its unpredictable behavior, access is closely monitored, and children are strictly prohibited from going near it. Those wishing to collect rare materials, such as volcanic soil for gardening, obsidian for crafts, or to visit for research or tourism purposes, need the council’s permission. They must also be accompanied by a guard to ensure their safety.

Waiwellia:
Originally a shallow cenote that formed millions of years ago on the northern side of the territory, it gradually filled with rain and ocean water. Due to the geothermal heat from the nearby volcano, the water naturally warmed up, creating a natural hot spring. Located far enough from the volcano to minimize eruption risks, it has become a popular relaxation spot for Nani’kai residents and travelers alike. Visitors often include retired elders, expecting parents, and individuals with sore backs, all seeking relief in its warm waters from daily aches and pains.

The Nani’Kai enjoys working hard and playing even harder! They often gather for special events to celebrate as a colony. These traditions are relics of old, and the chief aim is to make them standards in this new era. However, as with any colony going through a renaissance of rebirth, these traditions may evolve or expand over time.

Hou’Makahiki - New Year
Festival / Giant Celebration - All are welcome!
Ritual of Thanks to the Ocean Mother
It will be an annual roleplay event hosted by the current leader

During the last few days of the year, when the ocean is calm and often too cold for swimming, the Nani’Kai uses this time to host its biggest celebration of the year, ending the year with a bang!

They spend weeks on decorating with flowers, leaves, and glow bugs caught in woven baskets, which are strung up to provide light even during the night. The hunters work extra hours to fish and gather large quantities of food for the entire colony. Food artisans ferment berries and jungle fruits into sweet, bubbly nectars for the adults. Children run around, encouraged to sing traditional songs to lift spirits and offer help to move preparations forward. There isn’t a paw or claw that isn’t being used in the colony to help set up for the Hou’Makahiki. Nani’kai are encouraged during breaks around this time to create personal offerings for the Ocean Mother and to contemplate their wishes and desires for the coming year. These offerings are highly personal items, often considered blessings from the ocean. They may include flower arrangements, beautiful shells, bones of a prized fish caught, pieces of pottery or jewelry, and even preserved baby teeth or fur from children born in the past year. Whatever your Nani’Kai believes they have been blessed with over the past year can be offered as thanks to the Ocean Mother!

During this period, the priest and priestess monitor the celestial bodies and stars closely, comparing their positions with those of previous years to ensure accuracy. The Chief themselves are tasked with watching over the colony at the Mimilio in silent reverence. Finally, as the sun sets, the stone monument sundial at the peak of the Mimilio ritual grounds turns dark, signifying the final day of the calendar. All the weeks of effort culminate in this single moment.

There is a moment of silence before a large horn is blown, signaling the start of Hou’Makahiki.

According to tradition, no work is to be performed after the horn sounds unless absolutely essential services, such as guards and medical personnel, are needed. The Nani’Kai dedicate this night to feasting, spending time with family, sharing stories, and remembering fondly those absent from this year’s celebration. They express gratitude for surviving another year under the blessings of the Ocean Mother. The entire colony parties all night, illuminated by the Moon Sister's glow, which inspires continued celebration long into the night. Allies, friends, and even travelers from nearby or distant lands are warmly invited to join in the festivities. All are welcome to enjoy the huge beach party!

Nonetheless, all gatherings must come to an end. As the first light of dawn breaks and the horn blows again, it marks the conclusion of the festivities and the start of a period of gratitude. It is believed that the first day of the year is when the Ocean Mother is closest to the living realm and can directly hear the heartfelt thanks and wishes of her beloved children.

Amidst groans of hangover and weary sighs, the Nani’Kai gather their offerings for the Ocean Mother, which they have prepared over the past few weeks. During this ritual, all visitors and guests are directed to stay on the beach, as they are not allowed to participate.

The colony progresses to the top of Mimilio, where they are greeted by the chief and council members. The chief performs prayers, offers thanks, and sacrifices offerings into the whirlpool below on behalf of the entire colony to the Ocean Mother. They pray for favorable weather, smooth births, successful hunts, and cherished memories for all with the year ahead.

Each Nani’Kai is then invited to approach the cliff and toss their offering into the whirlpool below. They are given a moment of quiet to express their gratitude to the Ocean Mother and, along with their offerings, share their hopes and resolutions for the year ahead.

Māhealani - Summer Solstice
Ritual of Thanks for the Moon Sister / Strength Renewal
Honoring the Dead
It will be an annual roleplayed event hosted by the current leader

During the summer solstice, the Moon Sister is at her most vulnerable and needs her strength restored. Representing the cycle of life, death, and rebirth, she undergoes a monthly ritual: she dies with the New Moon and is reborn with the Full Moon. This cycle drains her energy over the long year, causing her to become lost in the spirit realm's fog and gradually shortening each night. The Nani’Kai revitalize her vitality and help guide the Moon Goddess back to her proper place in the sky by holding a festival to offer their energy and gifts. This event also re-establishes a clear path between the spirit and living worlds, allowing her and the ancestors to travel freely.

It also serves as a fun event for the children of Nani’Kai, giving them a chance to dress up, indulge in sweets, and freely act as little terrors for this special night.

Children and their families (or nannies if caregivers are unavailable) spend the days before the festival making masks from coconut shells that they wear over their faces. These masks are decorated with shells, flowers, and other beach-found materials, glued on with sticky jungle sap. They are painted with bright colors, featuring scary faces and markings. The same vibrant pigments are used to paint their bodies, mimicking the tattoos adults often wear. Children also wear necklaces made of small hollowed gourds filled with tiny rocks that jingle, strap bells to their feet, and wear dried palm leaf cloaks or skirts. All of this helps the children resemble Kakamora—guardians of the spiritual realm, believed to carry the Moon Sister and ancestors across the ocean waves each night. The jingling sound imitates the hollow coconut heads of the Kakamora, believed to guide through fog or storms for the Moon Sister normally throughout the year.

The Nani’Kai gather around Huko’Loko to hold a grand feast and festival in honor of the Moon Sister, guiding her home. Ki’i from the cliffs are brought down and placed around Huko’Loko, serving as anchors for the spirits of ancestors to find their way back. However, Ki’i alone aren’t enough to bring everyone back. They offer libations and set out extra servings of food for their ancestors, enticing them to return through the aroma of their favorite treats. Juicy, seasonal fruits are served, often dipped in sweet sap or soaked in coconut milk, creating delightful offerings for the living, the dead, and the goddesses alike!

Once everyone is settled in and gathered it's time for the main event: Unleash the Offspring!

The children receive their cue and quickly emerge from their hiding spots, happily allowed to act mischievously. They are encouraged to run, play, shake their necklaces, and make as much noise as they can with their outfits. They learn traditional songs and dances believed to be loved by the Moon Sister; performing them correctly by singing or dancing in front of an adult earns them a treat. Alternatively, if they manage to scare an adult with the loudest roar they can muster, they also receive a reward for their effort.

If successful, the festival will strengthen the connection between the two realms once more. Reinvigorated by dancing, singing, and the outpouring of love and energy from the Nani’Kai, the Moon Sister is reborn and energized for another year of renewal. She will start to appear earlier in the day, with nights growing longer, until the Winter Solstice signals the decline of her energy reserves again and the second half of her rebirth cycle.

Pelekee - Winter Solstice
Ritual of Strength for The Ever-Growing Child.
Seasonal Fishing and Dancing Contest
It will be an annual roleplayed event hosted by the current leader

The Summer Solstice ceremony emphasizes revitalizing the Moon Sister's strength, while on the opposite side is a festival dedicated to appeasing the constantly hungry and restless Child of Fire. It is believed that without these annual offerings, like any neglected toddler, she will start to lash out with intense eruptions - though her outbursts involve much more lava and flames than a typical toddler’s tantrum!

This festival also serves as the ultimate goal for the hunters and performers of the Nani’Kai. Throughout the year, they refine their skills with the aim of winning the championship and earning the associated bragging rights for the rest of the year.

The hunters will participate in a major fishing contest in the ocean, monitored by guards to prevent any misconduct. They have from sunrise to sunset to catch as many fish as they can. The hunters with the largest catches at day's end are declared winners. The top three will be crowned the Lawai’a, the colony's prized fishermen, and will have the honor of offering all the catch from the contest into the volcano’s caldera. It is believed that for feeding her child, the Ocean Goddess blesses those honored with this act, and they will experience exceptional luck and success in achieving their own goals.

Performers will compete in a major beach dance contest judged by retired master performers, the council, and the chief. Only one winner will be crowned Lolani Luahine, or “High Priestess of Ancient Dance.” This dancer is regarded as a master and embodies the Ocean Goddess’s beauty and grace in a living vessel. The Lolani Luahine receives a unique, custom-made jewelry piece from a master artisan, featuring a prized blue pearl— the rarest pearl native to Nani’Kai’s territory. Historically, these pearls were reserved for the high priestess and royalty because of their rarity and value. The contest serves to entertain the crowd and support the fishermen during the fishing contest happening throughout the day. But it serves in celebrating the rich cultural storytelling tradition through each dance, which recounts ancient Nani’Kai creation myths and stories of heroes of old. It is believed that the fire child observes the performers from her volcano home and enjoys their dances immensely, lulling her into a calm state.

Aroha Ola - Spring Celebration
Observe an awe-inspiring natural event
A celebration of new love, new connections, and new life
It will be an annual roleplayed event hosted by the current leader

The period around the Aroha Ola can evoke a variety of emotions for different individuals. For some, it’s an exhilarating time to witness sea turtles and whales undertaking their natural migrations to the shores of Nani’Kai, where they give birth and, in the case of whales, raise their young in the safe, warm waters. For others—especially younger members of the community—this period can be quite stressful, as Aroha Ola is also known as the lovers’ festival. It’s a time to summon courage and invite a romantic interest to join the festivities, potentially forging a lasting connection or even a marriage proposal!

Conversely, those uninterested or bitter about the festival may find the constant stream of romantic gestures surrounding them during this time irritating or nauseating. A common phrase that jokes about this phenomenon is, "the love turtle came and bit them in the night, taking their brains with them," which refers to how someone can suddenly become captivated and solely focused on pursuing a new romantic relationship.

It doesn’t help that many travelers and tourists flock to the Nani’Kai during this period for the opportunity to whale-watch, as you can see the whales feeding and interacting with each other from the shores of the beach, or to come watch the hatching and sudden rush to freedom that the newborn sea turtles make once a year. This sudden influx of new individuals has led to more than one instance of short-lived budding relationships that end in children looking remarkably similar to the traveler long gone being born just a few months later. Of course, it has also led to its fair share of travelers getting bitten by the turtle and deciding to stay a beach bum for the duration of their lives!

These are events that can be roleplayed or just plotted if preferred. They will be handled on a more personal basis and will not involve colony-wide open roleplays

Ho’o Kanakaka Makua - Coming of Age Ceremony.
This ceremony is a requirement for all young Nani’Kai to complete before they are recognized as full adults and permitted to take on colony jobs, move out of their caretaker’s dens, or have children.

A young Nani’Kai must face the ocean alone without guidance and complete their first hunt. They are expected to bring back both food and at least one bounty from the Ocean Mother as a sign of her blessing, such as a pearl, abalone, shark’s purse or tooth, or even human items like coins or bottles. Usually, the object they choose will be cherished and displayed throughout their lives as symbols of their connection to their faith and connection to the Ocean Mother.

After their first successful hunt, they are then tasked with climbing the cliffs and adding their paw print to the many engraved marks of their ancestors—both living and past—on the decorated walls, symbolizing their literal mark on the colony’s history. The Nani’Kai returns down the cliffs as a fully grown adult and is greeted with a grand celebration by their loved ones.

The Ho’o Kanakaka Makua is typically followed by the ceremony below.

Kaka’u Ni’o - First Tattoo
A Nani’Kai’s first tattoo marks a joyful milestone for them and their family. It represents their first notable achievement or a meaningful connection to a story from Nani’Kai’s history - usually in the form of a hard life lesson they experienced when younger - that they want to wear with pride. Usually, this occurs right after the Ho’o Kanakaka Makua, as children are not allowed to get tattoos beforehand. However, some individuals haven’t reached any recognized milestone or connected culturally by this time. These rare cases are called Lohi Pua, or late bloomers. Though not directly shunned in the colony, they are viewed as odd anomalies and sometimes rumored to be overlooked by the Ocean Mother. Sadly, those considered Lohi Pua often face overwhelming peer pressure to earn their first tattoo as soon as possible!

La’a Male’Anao - Marriage Ceremony
This ceremony is to join two souls in marriage, a sacred union that forever links the two together, both in the realm of the living and in the realm of the dead. It is believed that this act reunites the two halves of a singular whole, which the Ocean Mother mistakenly split apart during creation.

Traditionally, the ceremony takes place at low tide, allowing the couple to stand in the ocean without worry. They exchange leis made of ti leaves or colorful flowers that they made themselves for one another. Once the leis are exchanged, the couple exchanges vows with each other. The ceremony is then officially blessed by a priest or priestess performing an oli (a traditional chant) to wish for prosperity and unity. However, this is not a fixed rule, and each couple can choose to take their vows in whichever way they prefer.

Wai ti Hoʻolewa - Funeral Ceremony / Rites of the Dead
When a Nani’Kai passes away, their body must be returned to the Ocean Mother. This ensures their soul's safe journey to the realm of the dead and restores what they have taken from the ocean.
Traditionally, the body is washed and adorned with treasured personal items like jewelry or objects used daily. It is then anointed with sweet-smelling perfumes made from local fragrant plants. If the hair is long enough, it is braided and decorated with shells or flowers woven into it.

After preparing the body, it is laid on a bed of woven palm fronds and floated into the sea at high tide. Offerings like the deceased's favorite foods, flowers, fish, and personal items—things loved ones believe the departed would want in the afterlife—are then placed into the whirlpool at Mimilo.

Once the body is returned to the sea, the loved ones will commission a Ki’i from a colony artisan. They choose the finest stone and decide on decorative details, then retreat together for reflection and personalization of the Ki’i with the artisan present to assist with the carving. During this quiet time, they mourn, share stories of the departed, laugh, cry, and bond as a family.

These events are very sporadic and will always be roleplayed because they have significant impacts on the colony.

Natural Disasters
Living in a tropical paradise offers many benefits, but also presents certain challenges. The most significant drawback is the constant threat of sudden natural disasters. The most frequent natural events faced by Nani’Kai include, but are not limited to:
Hurricanes and tropical storms
Flooding
Earthquakes often followed by tsunamis
Mud/Rock slides
Volcanic eruptions
Toxic algae blooms.

The chief and council have developed safety and evacuation plans, which are regularly reviewed and updated to reduce risks and enhance safety during such disasters.

Ali’Kalakua - Dawning of a New Chief
The Chief's title is usually passed from parent to child as they prepare an heir for leadership of the colony. Although there is no official naming ceremony for the Nani’Kai of the heir, the current chief generally shows which of their offspring they are grooming for the role. Only the head priest or priestess will know the name of the true heir and will be tasked with announcing the next in line once the chief passes.

Importantly, passing the title to their offspring is not mandatory. The law leaves the final decision to the chief, who can choose either their own child or a dedicated member of the Nani’Kai with strong leadership potential. On these rare occasions an heir from outside the royal bloodline has been chosen; it is most often due to the absence of direct blood heirs or the lack of suitable leadership skills among potential royal candidates.

The heir's journey to the throne’s acceptance involves a rigorous test to demonstrate their acceptance by the Ocean Mother and their mental and physical resilience necessary for leadership. This secretive test is attended only by the head priest or priest, the head of the guard, and the heir. It is a perilous challenge, not disclosed to the heir beforehand, designed to evaluate their true spirit. Many who lack the courage or resilience to risk their lives have failed, relinquishing their chance at the throne.

The challenge requires the heir to dive from Mimilo's peak directly into the tumultuous whirlpool below. They must learn quickly to remain calm amid chaos, mirroring the composure needed in stressful leadership situations. Breathe, relax, trust the Ocean Mother’s protection, and follow the current further down into the unknown. Strong swimmers in good health will be drawn through the whirlpool into a concealed cenote to safety, where the council awaits to congratulate them on passing. Unfortunately, many struggle, panic, and fail by fighting the current, desperately trying to ascend, which often leads to drowning. This harsh reality is essential to protect the colony's health and future.

Each member of the Nani’Kai will be expected to have a rank and decide on a job role. Those who are new to the Nani’Kai will be given a temporary role if they are unsure of where their place in the world is yet.

Leadership consists of a monarchy and a shared-responsibility republic council. When a council member retires or passes on, a new replacement will be selected via a vote amongst the members that fall under the jurisdiction of the councilman.

If a Nani’Kai feels their current job isn't suitable, they can choose to switch to a different rank at any time, though they will be expected to go through the required training/apprenticeship as anyone else.

If one is found slacking in their duties, they will be disciplined by their respective Alaka’i. If their performance does not improve, then the matter is escalated to the councilman responsible for their jurisdiction for review and role reassignment. If the member continues to fail to meet role expectations, the situation will proceed to a trial to determine if the member aligns with the societal expectations of Nani'Kai, and if need be, will face expulsion from the colony.

🪸 Leadership roles

These roles will be temporarily open and closed once filled, until openings come again. These roles will have loose roleplay requirements. This is to ensure activity and a seen presence throughout the colony as they are the key leaders keeping the pride’s day-to-day life running smoothly!

This is a specialized role for the chief's consort. While they do not have a formal area of responsibility, the consort is often respected as an extension of the chief. 🦐 Standard Ranks

These are the standard ranks available for anyone to join. There are no specific roleplay requirements for maintaining each role.

Quote:
Lawai’a - Fisher / Hunter
RP Required?: No

Mahi’ai - Farmer / Gatherer

Responsible for overseeing the colony’s territory and ensuring safety and order. They are trained in basic combat, conduct regular patrols in teams, and monitor key strategic points across the territory. During wartime, Pōhaku serve as the front-line defense, switching to active combat roles to address threats. Most Pōhaku are more highly decorated in tattoos than the average Nani’kai, both out of pride for their role and as a strong intimidation tactic for any troublemakers.

Ka’elele - Ambassador
RP Required?: No

Responsible for maintaining diplomatic relationships and ensuring smooth trade operations. At home, they are often seen talking with visiting travelers or overseeing trade deals to guarantee fairness for all parties. Ka’elele frequently travels to other colonies and packs in a diplomatic role to learn about different cultures, foster connections with neighbors, and potentially establish alliances.

Kahuna - Priest / Priestess
RP Required?: No

Religious figures who deeply feel connected to the Ocean Mother or one of the other deities worshipped by the Nani’Kai. They are responsible for daily prayers, offerings, and interpreting divine signs for the colony’s future. Ho’ola - Healer / Apothecary / Midwife
RP Required?: No

Specialists trained in medicine, creating healing tonics and ointments to treat various ailments. They usually fall into two branches: the general health practitioners who see patients regularly, and the master herbalists who collaborate with the Mahi’ai to develop new medicinal plants. A Ho’olo receives cross-training in both areas to cover any gaps, but often chooses a particular specialty to focus on.

A more specialized field of study that few go into but are no less important is midwifery. These few are experts in aiding new parents through pregnancy, birth, and caring for the child in their first few days of life.

Ho’ike - Performer
RP Required?: No

This title represents the general rank for all performers within the Nani’Kai. It can be associated with various specialties such as performing traditional hula dances, playing instruments, storytelling, or singing. An individual holding this rank does not need to master all performance branches; they can focus on excelling in one area.

Ka’Kau - Tattoo Artist
RP Required?: No

Achieving the rank of a Ka’Kau artist is extremely uncommon. It requires a natural talent for art that must be recognized by an established Ka’Kau artist willing to take responsibility for you and train you with an extensive apprenticeship. This training covers how to mix inks, maintain high health and sanitation standards, and use specialized tools and techniques to deposit ink under the skin. These individuals are highly respected, as everyone in the Nani’kai holds a good artist who can beautify their coats with more tattoos in a positive light!

Please note that all children will be given the rank of Keiki until adolescence. Once they have grown into adolescence - or adults if that stage is skipped - it will automatically be assumed that they have completed their Ho’o Kanakaka Makua and will be moved into the rank of Lana if no rank change has been requested.

Leaving the Colony
Please briefly explain why the member is leaving. This helps others understand the reasons for their departure and allows leadership to address any ongoing concerns.

If you plot forceful exiles, please message Lavenadel to discuss the plot and get approval before posting.

Roleplay Requirement Log

Upon request by Lavenadel please fill out this form to ensure that you are meeting the roleplay requirements of certain roles. This will be pretty rare, just if I typically can't track down any activity myself. If you do not fill out this form within 30 days of being requested, your Nani'Kai will be removed from their previous rank and moved down to Lawai’a by default.

The colony is open and welcoming to neighbors for alliances and trade. Relations with nearby and distant colonies/packs will be documented here. That being said, an ongoing alliance is not required for friendly visitors to come into the Nani'Kai territory.

If you're interested in establishing a relationship with the Nani'Kai, message Lavenadel on Gaia or Discord!

Updated 7/13/2025

Te'Fiti is currently working on rebuilding the Nani'Kai to its former glory with the help of her mate, Mountain. She is making outreach attempts to establish new connections with neighboring colonies and set trade routes for important essentials the colony will need.

Outside of new alliances, Te'Fiti is working on tracking down and contacting surviving members of the old Nani'Kai and inviting them to rejoin the colony and help rebuild it.

Please feel free to ask Lavenadel! I will answer privately and post the question/answer here for the record (if it's relevant for the rest of the colony to know.)
