Sailor Tempesti rolled her shoulders with a sigh, finding a warm sliver of contentment in color shot through the darkening sky. Tonight’s patrol had brought her into the path of a pair of youma resembling nothing so much as a pair of stilt walkers clad in loudly clashing circus costumes. Despite their tag team approach, the unusual duo’s stiffly unwieldy maneuvers left at a distinct disadvantage against a more agile opponent. That’s not to say, of course, that they didn’t get their shots in. She bore one or three large bruises and a nasty scrape on her shoulder from a surprise encounter with the sidewalk, but she couldn’t claim to be worse off than those two. Hearing that dusting youma didn’t permanently kill them had been something of a comfort to her guilty conscience, but wherever they reappeared she imagined that they had to be at least a bit sore from the battle.

The soft grass at the edge of a park welcomed her as she sat down, leaning back onto her elbows to take in the waning glow of the world around her. No doubt some passersby would eventually break the quiet, a natural side effect of choosing to lounge in a city park, but for now she simply enjoyed the warmth of the evening breeze.

Cuan had been tracking an energy signal that had screamed Chaos deep within her soul. Then, it had stopped, replaced by one that felt far better. Intending to find this new source and (hopefully) congratulate them on chasing away whatever it had been, the kitten followed this new aura. After a little bit, it stopped and seemed to settle within the park. Which was fine by Cuan! It was much easier to track someone when they weren’t so busy moving around, after all.

As she wove her way through grass in desperate need of mowing, the kitten finally set eyes on a seated figure. Boldly ambling up to them, she took in dark red hair and a uniform blazoned in white. Which meant senshi. Not that she minded talking to knights, but she understood senshi better. She, for the most part, understood how they worked.

The kitten strolled up beside the senshi and plonked herself down beside the girl, studying her via side-eye. Bruised and a bit battered, but nothing worse. That was all right then. Turning her attention back to the skyline, she cleared her throat delicately.

“I hope you’ve at least washed out that scrape. Serenity knows what sort of nasty diseases an officer might have on their weapon or a youma its claws.”

The sudden appearance of an adorable grey kitty broke through her reveries. She flooded herself with a surge of mental reminders that in addition to being among the cutest beings she’d ever seen, Mauvians were also an ancient and powerful race and as such, requesting to pet them would be far creepier than if they were just regular cats. A creepiness that would only be compounded by the fact that this one seemed rather young. Regardless, she smiled at the cat as she sat up straighter, wondering once more if it would be impolite to try to shake a Mauvian’s little paw. She was keenly aware of the fact that she likely had grass stains on her skirt and elbows but hopefully that wouldn’t make too bad of an impression on her new acquaintance.

“I did, I’ve got a first aid kit in my subspace. I’ve also got water if you’d like some. Walking around in the heat without water is never fun. Um, I’m Sailor Tempesti by the way.” Powerful or not, she didn’t want to let the kitten get dehydrated

”You’re very kind,” Cuan said with a gracious dip of her head. “But no. I’m not so far from home that I’m at risk of dehydrating.”

Realizing that her words might sound like a rebuke, Cuan smiled and turned so that she could face the senshi better. Rearing up on her haunches, she managed an only slightly wobbly bow.

“I’m delighted to meet you, Sailor Tempesti. My name is Cuan Oilean, but as that’s a damn mouthful for anyone, please just call me Cuan. Show me your first aid kit, would you?”

Frankly, she was impressed that someone had thought to store anything truly useful in subspace. Oh, she knew it wasn’t unheard of and that more people did so than not. But still. She was still fighting Saiph to at least toss a box of bandaids into hers. As she waited, she stood and moved closer, wanting a really good look at the scrape. Rearing up and using her forepaws against Tempesti’s arm to balance, she closely inspected the injury, nose wrinkling in distaste. This looked more like a youma’s work than an officer’s. Nasty creatures, youma. Though she did try to remember that not all youma had been born as abominations. It didn’t always help, but she tried.

“Hrm, not bad, but it won’t hurt to give it a good scrubbing once you’re home. Any chance you keep peroxide in your subspace as well? Some form of antiseptic? Bandages? You’ve done very well, but I’d just like to be absolutely certain.”

She smiled at the kitten’s gestures, just managing to suppress her delight at their sheer cuteness and happy to hear that she was in no danger of dehydration. Her small stature combined with the day’s lingering heat had been an immediate and unavoidable source of concern, even with the knowledge that the Mauvian was most likely more than capable of taking care of herself. Come to think of it, she had no idea how similar Mauvian biology was to that of the cats native to Earth. The question was probably a less than polite one, especially with someone she’d only just met but she made a mental note to see if there was anything in the database to satisfy her curiosity. “It’s nice to meet you, Cuan. I’m glad the heat isn’t treating you too poorly.”

“Oh, of course!” Cuan’s interest in her first aid kit was something of a surprise but she obliged, summoning the red, zippered case from her subspace.

(She wondered if Mauvians enjoyed regular cat treats and if she should start keeping those in her subspace as well).

As Cuan examined her shoulders (those little paws!) Tempesti managed to hold herself still. “Thank you, I’ll definitely give it another cleaning at home.”

With a whir, the red first aid case opened to reveal a wide selection of bandages, tapes, gauze, antiseptic packets, small tubes of antibacterial ointments, and an assortment of unopened items she wanted to keep handy, just in case. “I figure it’s better to have a bit too much than not enough.”

Nodding approvingly as Tempesti brought out the kit, Cuan waited politely for it to be opened before immediately rooting around in it. Seizing things in her teeth, she dragged out a packet of gauze, some antiseptic and batted a roll of tape out with her paw. She would have preferred seeing a bottle of hydrogen peroxide, but well. One couldn’t have everything.

“Oh, this is very good!” she said as she emptied her mouth and began to examine things. Right now, she wanted to keep the scrape clean and protected until Tempesti could deal with it more thoroughly at home. And she couldn’t take it for granted that the girl would go home directly after this. For all Cuan knew, this senshi was one of those magnificent and idiotic specimens who would keep going until they literally dropped. And since she couldn’t be sure of the type of person she was dealing with, well. She’d simply have to take matters into her own paws.

“Let me see, be a dear and soak this gauze in the antiseptic, please. It will probably sting, but that’s how you’ll know it’s working.”

Unfortunately, the best she could do was issue orders. While she was fairly fastidious, there was no denying that her paws were constantly on the ground and dirty. Unless…

“Once that’s nice and soaked, please set it over the worst of the scrape. And hold it there for a moment. Ah, if you could do the same on another bit of gauze and set it down here,” she tapped a paw on the ground. “I’ll wash my paws a bit so I can help. Goodness, you are prepared, aren’t you!”

Tempesti watched the Mauvian’s practiced determination as she extracted the items she needed in what very well might have been the absolute cutest way possible. Though she had a solid idea of how to address the injury, she was grateful for the little cat’s enthusiasm and couldn’t help but see her own need to aid others reflected in her well-meaning orders.

Following the instructions Cuan issued Tempesti quickly dressed the wound, suppressing a soft hiss that wanted out when the antiseptic met her raw skin before setting out another piece for those precious little paws. “I do try to be prepared, you never know when someone is going to need help. I mean. I don’t have any medical training but I hope I can at least buy time for someone qualified to come along She smiled self-consciously. As much as she would love to be a proverbial jack of all trades, the identities she was already juggling threatened to unbalance her entirely.

Tempesti is definitely one of those specimens. Her logic is that if she has superpowers it's her job to help the people who don't. She hasn't exactly found a balance between that and being human yet.

Wiping her forepaws carefully on the wet gauze, Cuan sat up on her haunches and wiggled her paws a bit so they would dry faster. Glancing up at the senshi, she thought that she’d never met someone so self-effacing before. She was so used to swagger and bombast from the higher ranking members of the White Moon.

“Nothing wrong with being prepared, though in light of your admitted lack of knowledge, a course in first aid would probably be beneficial for you. The community college has a good course, open to the public and they hold it every other month. It’s really just the basics plus some CPR training.”

Deciding that her paws were dry enough, Cuan leaned forward slightly so that she could hold the gauze pad on Tempesti’s shoulder in place.

“I’ll take care of this. Now, take out a dry gauze and put a bit of that antibiotic ointment on it. Dot it around since we want a fair bit of coverage. Once you’ve done that, tell me. I’ll let go of this bit and you can slap the new one over the scrape. From there I can hold it while you tear off tape pieces and begin to anchor things down. Make sense?”

Going quiet for a moment, the kitten took a really good look at Tempesti’s face and the spots that would likely become bruises within a few hours. Thought about what she’d said about never knowing when someone might need help. Maybe she was just feeling a bit broody, but she had to wonder if Tempesti was taking any time for herself. Yes, there was a war waging out there, but did it really help anyone if you neglected yourself?

“When is the last time you actually slept,” she demanded. “Or took a night or two off from patrolling? Be honest, please.”

“I did take one of those classes in first aid with CPR and AED, but under our…circumstances I could stand to take a more advanced class.” Yet again, she wondered if she should have focused more effort into developing scientific skills instead of music. Playing music made her happy, of course, but it didn’t do anyone much good when someone was bleeding or burned or bludgeoned or electrocuted by a giant horrifying snake monster from beyond the stars that was probably the first of a series of godawful beings from a terrifying and possibly sentient half dead world.

But for now she had her first aid kit and not enough time to learn everything she should. Any discomfort in her shoulder felt more distant between those thoughts and the presence of a little Mauvian helping her patch it up. Continuing to follow her instructions, she turned her head slightly, “Where did you pick up your first aid skills?” Service dogs in the classrooms weren’t unfamiliar, but Tempesti had never seen a cat indoors on campus. The senshi grimaced slightly under Cuan’s scrutiny. Her sisters’ questions made it clear that she wasn’t hiding her sleepless state with any particular skill, but she had hoped that it would be less obvious to people who didn’t know her well.

“It’s…been a while since I slept all the way through the night and as for the patrols, well, I can’t really justify taking too much time off. Especially with everything that just happened.” The sleepless nights seemed a fair price to pay, and the fact that they kept her from the less than pleasant dreams wasn’t unwelcome. With her power newly stabilized, she had time to make up for the months she spent in surges and shorts.

Patting down bits of tape and making sure that the resultant dressing was to her liking, Cuan didn’t answer for a moment. And when she did, it was after a final, satisfied tape. That thing wouldn’t come off unless it was deliberately removed. It would do the job. Returning to a sitting position, Cuan tilted her head and looked at Tempesti with large, bright, blue-green eyes.

“I eavesdrop on in person classes and use the internet, of course. I have a chibi senshi to take care of, it is my job to make sure I learn useful things. Besides, I need to find something to do while she’s in school or out being a normal girl.”

The kitten’s eyes narrowed at the temporizing and she sighed. She was going to have to Pull Rank. And that was sometimes very difficult when one was as small as she was.

“And why, if I may be so bold as to ask,” she cut in, a slight edge to her voice, “have you not reached out to anyone to ask for help? Not sleeping is dangerous, my girl! Especially if you go too long without. There are so many older senshi and even knights within the medical field who would be happy to refer you to someone or prescribe something should circumstances be dire enough to warrant such action. All you have to do is actually search the database.”

She raised a paw to scrub over her ear and drew her lips back in mild distaste at the lingering smell of antiseptic.

“I’m assuming that you’re referring to the dust up with the Hallow? If so, I must say I am mildly disappointed in your logic. We all came so close to ruin. We all witnessed terrible things. But bet your a** I encouraged my senshi to step back for a moment and breathe. How are you supposed to adequately protect this world if you don’t take the time to be part of it and live?”

This was something that Cuan had spent considerable time thinking about. When she had lived with Chariklo, she’d been harder on herself and her bird than had probably been necessary. But since she’d been with Saiph and had witnessed a full grown Mauvian make the conscious choice to awaken a literal child… Well. Perhaps it was safe to say that her priorities had shifted somewhat. She would still encourage the people of the White Moon that she found to fight. She would listen to their woes and offer what advice she could.

But she now refused to encourage the idea that one had to live and breathe and be in fight mode constantly.

“Sailor Temptesti,” Cuan intoned, her voice still holding an edge. “You are doing yourself and this place no damn good if you don’t take proper care of yourself. That means taking the time to sleep and talking to someone if you need help sleeping or just purging feelings. It also means just… being human. Go out, do something you enjoy and take a damn break for a night or two.”

The kitten seemed to deflate for a moment as she sighed and shook her head. “We were never meant to be nothing but our duty. Or to fight alone. You are not the only senshi in town. You don’t have to put the well being of a world above your own anymore."

“If you wouldn’t mind hiding in my bag I’d be happy to take you to a class or two sometime. I’d leave it open so you could get fresh air, of course.” Cuan seemed pretty adept at using everything she had at her disposal, but it wouldn’t hurt to share the benefits of opposable thumbs and the ability to walk into a classroom without causing a stir.

(Though cats can be pretty sneaky when they want to, maybe she can do that)

“Thank you for the help, by the way.” Tempesti smiled self-consciously, and when the Mauvian launched into a lecture it felt like it had been an inevitability since they first crossed paths. One she couldn’t exactly dispute or even resent. Cuan wasn’t saying anything that wasn’t true, a small part of her knew that but the larger, louder part flashed images of the Dark Star across her mind every time she considered slowing down. She had no idea if a celestial body could be actively malicious, but that thing hounded her with each step she took. “I…haven’t reached out. I should. I know I should. I just. I know there’s more out there. That monster in the sky can’t be the only one.” She sighed, resisting the urge to stare at the prison like she had so many times before, “But you’re right. I’m just still not used to all of this. I want to do right by everyone. But I got sloppy tonight,” the senshi glanced briefly at her bandaged shoulder, “And I know that actual sleep might have prevented that. Probably would have prevented that. Thanks again. For the help and the talk.

Eyes flickering up, briefly, to star at a particular spot in the night sky, Cuan supposed she couldn’t blame the girl for her thoughts. But, perhaps she could direct them more usefully. Echoing Tempesti’s sigh, the kitten opted to gaze up at the spot a bit longer. Knowing it was there was beyond creepy, but it was important that they never again forget about what was hidden beyond that pinprick of light.

“It’s a kind offer, but no thank you,” she eventually said. In her own opinion, she was less noticeable when she was able to be out and act like a normal stray. Stick her in a bag though and you could bet a lot of people would notice. It wasn’t something that sounded appealing at all. “Cats are rather ubiquitous on their own. I attract far less attention on my own. As for the horrors beyond our ken…”

Cuan sighed again and shook her head. “Well, of course the Hallow wouldn’t be the only one. It’s just the one that we learned about first. But worrying and fretting yourself into a knot isn’t going to affect anything about them. If they are coming for us, they are coming regardless of if you take a night off or not. You can prepare for general disaster, but complete unknowns? You’ll drive yourself mad and waste so much of your life and your time.”

Standing up, she sauntered towards Tempesti and gave the girl’s leg a gentle head bonk. She’d lasted this long. If she could keep from catastrophizing, she’d do very well, indeed.

“I believe that you’re a good person and clearly working very hard to be a good senshi,” she said. “Your dedication is admirable and I hope I haven’t discouraged you. But please, take the rest of tonight off. Rest. Go do something you love that has nothing to do with wars or eldritch horrors. When, or if, the monsters come, you will fight better knowing how good it is to be alive, to be human and have people to love who love you in return.”

Ugh, she sounded like the grizzled hero in one of the movies she loved, giving a pep talk right before the Blob People from Tau Ceti arrived to wage war. Still, the sentiment was there and she hoped that Tempesti would understand the gist of things even if the words were slightly melodramatic.

Stretching out fully and feeling the muscles around her spine relaxing, Cuan smiled. “We’ll see each other again soon. I think I’ll add you to my list of folk to keep an eye on.”
