She was balanced precariously on the railing of the backyard that had such a lovely garden in it. She wasn't here for the garden however she was here because the railing made the ideal balance beam. She was sure this was the right spot for her ninja training. Mom had told her that ninja's like pirates were ancient respected warriors though ninja was no longer a common term for it. There were a few paths that walked similar in her time. Ninjas and their way were so old as to be legend and as with all really old things the stories told about them changed over time. Tyee loved stories, especially about her parents but not limited to them. She loved to hear of fantasy worlds and times lost to the past. About legendary creatures and fair maidens. She fancied herself a fair maiden of course one of the fairest of them all actually thank you very much. She loved critter stories too and was honestly surprised that her mother hadn't become a beast tamer like the rest of the family. Of course you wouldn't be able to tell she wasn't one because she had so very many critters. Tyee loved them all. She wanted a critter of her own she was just working up the courage to ask her mother for one outright or at the very least what she might do to be able to get one herself. Maybe she could catch one with a sandwhich...her Dad made really really good sandwhiches and she had two for her lunch.

She was an enterprising sort so she tied one sandwhich to a string and baited a very ill thought out trap. At first she thought it would really work but all she managed to attract were pesky seagulls, one of them got half her sandwhich before she could rush over to shoo it away. Darned things anyhow, they had gotten more than their fair share of brains. She couldn't say the same about every species however.

The males around her age in her family seemed awfully silly, except her brother who shared too many of her genes to be silly and her older brother who was downright brilliant. Though he had been spending more and more time away from the ranch and her mothers ship. She must figure out what he was up to. She would follow him after she had her familiar, that would solve a lot of questions she felt. He couldn't hide from his sister forever and he stahlwartly refused to answer her prying questions. Infidel. She shook her head. Seathra her aunt doted on her and spoiled her and defended her from her mother when her mother was going on and on about an issue or other that Tyee really didn't give a fig about. Seathra was always there and it was her that Tyee who was blessed so far with only brothers confided in all her secrets and her ambitions.

Anyway back to what she was doing on the wall. She was tired of being small and inefectual, she wanted recognition and power and she wanted both of them right meow. In order to get these things as a pint sized grasshopper she had gotten it into her head that she needed to train her body and mind and have both under her control simultaneously. Which meant working on her form, muscles and problem solving skills and there wasn't much better way of that then by balancing on the wall. Her father had promised her not long ago to find her some kids practice throwing knives as he had heard that ninja of old often carried such things. He said that Ultear was sort of a ninja but allied more to the shadows. And in confidence that her mom was almost ninja material except that her swords were considered too long to be traditional ninja weapons.

Still though, almost a ninja was pretty cool. She balanced on one foot and tried to pivot, then lost her balance a bit and had to windmill her arms to keep on top of the balance beam. This was so much harder than it looked but best that she learn now while she was light and the ground wouldn't punish her too hard for it. Fingers crossed she would be able to keep her balance up here. At some point she would have to have enough balance to both throw and dodge incoming knives...probably from other ninjas. Maybe her brothers would help her train or that shadowy cousin. He might have some good tips since he was a ninja type guy himself...way of the shadow monk whatever that was a ninja in her mind. Maybe there would be an awesome teacher deep in the woods that would be able to teach her the art of control of her own mind which would lead to better control of her body which would lead to yet better mind control. She was so eager to learn and had been doodling ninja warriors for ages on her scratch pads. Except for when her father asked for an image of a dragon..she had no idea what they looked like and so tried her best to recreate the creatures from the stories her parents told them at night to help them fall asleep. She apparently had gotten pretty close but you could still tell that it was her, a youngling that had drawn the thing. She shook herself and eyed the ground. Maybe she would work on other ninja traits now that involved less..er gravity.

Yes, she would work on her endurance, she clambered down the wall and glancing both ways to make sure no one had seen her she started to jog. She wasn't sure where she was jogging to but something would come up that would show her the way so to speak. Sometimes the best adventures were spontaneous. She found herself on the beach, running around the red crabs...also that was good training. She tried her best to catch them but came up empty. She knew there were younglings out there that could catch them. That boy that lived near the village, Theriar's son, she forgot his name because at the time she hadn't really cared. She preferred to play with her own brother she had no need to borrow someone else's, that would just be silly. He could catch the crabs though. She thought about asking him for help but then thought better of it. How else was she going to learn to be the best ninja ever if she couldn't figure this out all on her own with no help from anyone!

Her mother would have called it stubborness, her father would have said she took after her mother and she thought she was going win it all someday, she would be the best! In fact she didn't think, she KNEW she would be the best because she would practice and learn and make it so.

She raced and tracked and tried to dig them up fast but eventually she gave the crab chase up as a wild goose chase and continued on with her endurance training. She jogged past all kinds of flowers and all kinds of people. This area was nice because there were many stone paths that evened the ground out and made it easier to keep up her speed. Eventually she stopped and folded herself over...puffing. Well no one had ever said that any sort of serious training was going to be easy in any way shape or form and she was finding that out now. But also the more she did and the more she stuck with it then the stronger and more capable she would be in the long run and this would get easier, though it really did not feel that way right at this moment, it felt impossible. But she could do anything so long as she tried really hard, at least that was what her mother had told her. Mom was pretty wise for an old lady but one day Tyee wouldn't want to do everything her mother said. She had plans and aspirations and she wanted to see far off places and have epic battles with strangers like Dad did..mom too come to think if all of those bar room brawl rumors about her were to be believed and not just brushed off as small water village gossip.

She was certain her iceling ancestors would do no such thing as gossip as they were of noble blood even though Daddy's people had been more of a roving band he had said, Grandpa Kiyelt was from noble stock despite his parents not paying much attention to that lifestyle, blood was blood and Tyee was proud of it. Perhaps when she went to Zena they would recognize her as their queen and bow before her hybrid greatness and if they did not she would teach them the error of their ways. Oh yes. They would adore her.

Ye Old Fishing Hole

It was an idle day at home and she decided to make something of it. She gathered up her rod and reel, found some nice fat bait in the garden and the pantry as you never really knew what the fish would want that day. Then she set off to her ol reliable fishing hole that bordered the snaptrotter paddock on the ranch. Her mom was out sailing and training and her Dad was hunting for the ranch larder. There were plenty of family members around so she was not alone or unsupervised but today of all days she was going to give them for once nothing to complain about.

She wanted a simple nice relaxing day spent in the shade of her favorite tree plonked in front of her favorite fishing hole. And to be fair there was absolutely nothing wrong with having that as a goal. She would pursue that and nothing else that could get her in trouble and ruin her sacred fishing spot.

Sometimes she just didn't have the fiesty in her. She wondered if her blood was getting diluted due to all the reasonable people her ancestors had fallen in love with. She giggled at that thought. Her Dad was very steady and calm, her mother could be a spitfire but had also apparently mellowed with age. Aunty Seathra was apparently how Mama was when she was younger. Full of rage and fire and attitude and Tyee could be these things too sometimes, especially if she didn't get her way but then she would have calm days like this to make up for it. Seathra had no calm days or at least none that Tyee had noticed anyway. Oh well. Family was as family was and she loved her huge family even if her older brother stole the leftover gravy at dinner that by rights should have been hers. Bah.

She settled into a cross legged position at the fishing hole and baited her hook. Then she cast the bait and weight past the patch of sea weed and settled herself down to wait. She maneuvered the fishing pole so that it was secure in her legs and if a fish took a nibble she would feel the pull of the line.

She watched the tip of the line for a while but she could feel a low pressure system slowly moving into the area and the lower barometric pressure seemed to drag her eyelids down as well. How pesky, but nor could she fight it. Thus it was that she passed out under her favorite tree and slept for about an hour. Then she was rudely awakened when a large fish took the bait and snapped her line while she was still scrambling back to this plain of existance. She swore...something she had definitely learned from her mother but not too bad a string of words. She knew she wasn't to use the bad ones until she was old enough to be off her mothers apron strings.

She retied a spare hook, using her stronger spare line after relining the rod and baited it again.

"Come back here fishy I have a score to settle." She murmured. It had awoken her and hadn't had the decency to be caught, how awful of that fish to do that to her. Thus it was only fitting that she would get revenge for it. Or at least try to. The problem was that the fish would have to bite her line again. She had used the same bait but sometimes fish were smarter than she thought warranted by their size. Especially the big ones because they didn't get that big by being stupid.

She waited and as she waited she thought about her life and what she wanted to eventually do with it. Quite honestly no matter how much she thought about it at this point she really just wasn't entirely sure what she wanted to do. Being a pirate or a ninja quite appealed to her..but so did beast taming or hunting or even perhaps fishing. She shrugged. This tale probably wouldn't be untwisted this day. Her Dad always told her the best part of an adventure usually ended up being the journey to get there. She wasn't quite sure she understood that..wasn't travel the boring part after all? That was the part of the stories at night where she usually just fell asleep where she dare not fall asleep during the exciting parts.

Oh well, there was a lot that adults said right now that she didn't particularly understand quite yet. She was sure that she would find out later and made sure to write them down in her daily journal. Journals were something her mother could never keep up with unless it was the ships log. Her mother kept all her old ships logs and she would secretly look through them sometimes.

There were many many interesting adventures in there! She delighted in the detailed descriptions but there was also a lot of every day boring stuff in the log books too. She supposed that was the journey stuff that she was somehow supposed to enjoy more than the action. Hah, fat chance.

She felt a pull on the rod and set the hook. Could it be the monster? Probably not from the level of tug but maybe it was indeed a bigger fish than she thought, maybe it was conserving its energy or it was confused. Hmm.

She fought it for a good half an hour and it was a fair sized fish that would do nicely for their dinner. She didn't think it was the one that had taken her bait the first time though.
