“Nathial?†Kitya murmured as she pressed up against her companion, her silver gaze flickering across the crowded ballroom. “I know you had asked me to help gather some information tonight, but this is a lot.†So many richly dressed guests with even more servants to attend to whatever they desired. The very thought brought a slight frown to her lips as she noticed couples already pulling away into secluded corners, some more willing than others. Some gazes even lingered on her, something she was more accustomed with ever since becoming Nagini, but for some reason it actually threatened to unnerve her in this dark cavern with its flickering lights and masked faces.
“I’m with you, love.†Nathial reassured Kitya as he rested a hand along her hip, guiding her through the ballroom. The pair made quite an impression with Kitya’s silver gaze shining from her dark mask covered silver scales like a keldari with the deep indigo gown she wore bejeweled with tiny diamonds that shimmered like stars. Nathial wore a matching outfit with his own mask reminiscent of a yaotl from legend, the silver horns cutting through his fuschia curls. “Just relax and try to enjoy yourself. We have to be here to represent my business.â€
“Easier said than done.†Kitya replied, her breath tickling his neck as she leaned into him more so that he could sweep her up in a dance as the music echoed around them. “I adore attention normally, but for some reason anything here makes my skin crawl.†Gods forbid that she attract enough attention for someone to pull her from Nathial to try anything with her. The very thought made the wild magic thrum beneath her skin, the power always threatening to bring chaos with each step she took. “Still, I shall endure for your sake and put on a show.†Despite the disdain she felt for most in the room, Kitya managed to put on quite the facade as she started to truly move with Nathial to show what a prize that she could be indeed.

Another luxurious event. Pounamu tugged at the interlaced coils of gold that were around her neck and upper arms. On the surface it looked like some elegant piece of jewelry with some rubies intertwined within the golden links, but it felt more like a collar to the Kahi. The very thought made her lips purse tightly together as she continued walking amongst the pillars in an attempt to avoid the interest of any of tonight’s guests. She was technically a contracted servant, but if she avoided being called over then it was no harm done. It helped that there were other highlights to tonight’s show, performances of dancers brought in for this particular event, while even a couple in the center gathered attention. They gained Pounamu’s interest as well, the Kahi watching them intently before she accidentally stumbled into another. The collision had a golden hapuna twisting into a guest who spilled wine.
“Seriously?!†The masked woman hissed, her gaze bright with fury from beneath her crimson mask. “What a foolish servant!†Pounamu was petrified since she was too afraid to reveal herself while the poor Hapuna seemed too shocked as well to respond. It was her fault though and so she took a step forward to try to appease the woman before the couple from earlier spun their way instead.

“May we interfere?†Kitya whispered to Nathial. She had witnessed the whole scene despite them twisting and turning to the music, the Yaeli as observant as usual. “It would be a shame…†She began before her companion was already nodding and directing them towards the irritated guest. It was with ease that the pair dipped down low, Kitya spiraling away from Nathial so that he could quickly grab the woman’s wrist before she smacked the servant across the face.
“It would be a shame to ruin such an evening and beautiful face with anger.†Whether or not he meant it about the Hapuna or the masked guest no one truly knew. Either way it was enough to appease the woman since having a handsome man suddenly at her side was a balm in itself to the rage that she had nearly unleashed on the poor Hapuna. While Nathial took to addressing the damage, distracting the woman with a new drink and some casual conversation, it was Kitya who turned towards the servants and made certain that they were alright.
“I would leave now if I were you.†She whispered quietly, giving a gentle push on the hapuna’s back to send them in the opposite direction. So much for avoiding a scene, I suppose. Though it appeared Nathial was diffusing things quite well with how the music resumed and the dancers continued roaming through the ballroom. Kitya barely dared to look up towards the podium, relief making her shoulders drop as she realized that the host of tonight’s event was already caught up in another conversation and not paying attention to such minor squabbles.

Pounamu recognized the foreigner from the earlier scene and her heart fluttered at the sight of the masked woman who had taken the place of the angered guest. For a second she had simply stared before remembering to dart her gaze downwards, the Kahi hybrid worried that the brightness of her eyes would give her away. Be dazed, not aware. She had once seen what had happened when someone had been aware and lost their calm before being forced to drink the night away again. It was something that she most decidedly did not want to happen to herself. Still though now that she was in this situation even Pounamu did not know what to do save for taking a step backwards, torn between fleeing or waiting to see what could happen next. Something about the couple had felt different, almost as if they weren’t like most attending tonight’s event as insane of a notion as that was.

“Hey.†Kitya lowered her voice as she reached out towards the Kahi, offering her hand if she desired it. “I promise I’m not here for anything like the others, but if you need a moment then I can try to whisk you away.†Her lips curved upwards with amusement as she subtly nodded towards Nathial who was still entertaining the guest from earlier. “Why would I want anything else when I have that one on my arm usually? Just don’t tell him that I said that.†She teased, trying her best to diffuse any nervousness that the other woman had. Something about her seemed different than the others, even the nervous shifting of her feet gave away that there was some sort of thoughts going on behind those bi-colored eyes. A lovely face for certain which would explain her presence tonight even though Kitya was honest when she said that she wouldn’t try anything here.

Pounamu’s hands, usually so cool to the touch but feeling so clammy in the moment from her nerves, slowly reached out to grab the foreigner’s fingers. Pounamu did not say a word as she was terrified of being overheard in the crowd but the tightening of her fingers around the Yaeli’s hand and the desperation that shone in her gaze as she raised her face once more hopefully gave enough of a hint. She hadn’t been abandoned yet by the foreigner. Perhaps she could trust her for the moment? A feeling of relief swelled up within her chest until Pounamu glanced around, the reminder of her situation and those stuck here quickly deflating that energy into a somber calm. Pounamu swallowed the urge to say anything, pulling her gaze quickly back into the floor as she took a step back towards the foreigner. Thankfully she heard some murmurs of discontent as some who had been eyeing her got distracted in conversation with others, their interest fading as they opted to not chase after prey that had already been claimed in the moment. Realizing such a thing kept her resolve to stay with the foreigner despite how skittish she felt in the moment. Truly, it was strange to touch an earthling willingly but Pounamu swallowed the urge to rip her hand away.

“There’s private lounges, right?†Kitya whispered, her gaze softening as she watched the Kahi more. “Care to guide me?†Perhaps once they were there in what was supposed to be a more secure spot the pair could actually speak with one another. Did she even speak common though? Perhaps Oban if she had been in Sulburi for a while? Kitya had never really interacted with a Kahi before so there was a lot that she did not truly know save for the rumors spread about her own workplace with the guests there.

It seemed her awareness had already been picked up and panic rose in her chest. Should she run away? Was this a mistake to trust someone just because they had nearly gotten into a fight earlier? Her hesitation was swallowed though whenever more of the crowd moved around them, making Pounamu stay close even though she was tempted to flee. Pounamu swallowed the rising feeling of terror at the thought of going to a secluded place. This foreigner was not going to be like the others. If she believed in it enough would it be true though? Or was this some horrible mistake on her part? Still, desperation would always prove a great motivator for reckless decisions and so Pounamu decided to take the risk. She nodded at the words whispered in common and after another moment of hesitation finally tightened her grip on the hand so that she could begin guiding the woman towards the edge of the ballroom where stairs would be for the upper level of guest rooms.

“One second...†Kitya just gave the gentlest of tugs against the hand once she realized that the Kahi was taking her away somewhere. Maybe she should be more cautious as well, but Kitya truly worried about the woman who was trembling at the moment. Even if she didn’t realize it, Kahi’s fingers twitched every so often in Kitya’s hand and made her highly aware that she was barely keeping things together. Kitya made certain to catch Nathial’s gaze, the Yaeli subtly lifting two fingers on her free hand and nodding forward to indicate that they would be on the second level. She had seen them when they had entered the manor originally since Nathial had been given a quick tour of these levels as an honored guest who could use them later if necessary. These parties would go on way beyond dawn in some situations, if not days for others, and some would indeed opt to relax and what not in the private suites offered here.

Pounamu waited a few seconds before starting forward again once the foreigner appeared ready to go. Her sheer skirts swished around her belted waist, the gold links shimmering there in the torch light as they went around the corner and started up the twisting stairs. It was only once they entered one of the rooms on the farthest end possible that Pounamu finally let go of the foreigner’s hand. The room itself was lavish like most of the lower levels of the manor with tapestries and ornaments along the walls for decoration with chaises for lounging near a table with wine for guests to enjoy. Along the walls were only a few colored glass orbs with flickering candles to fight the darkness inside, the pale lights still leaving plenty of shadows for privacy. Now that they were inside though she simply stood awkwardly in the middle of the room before daring to peek towards the foreigner once more to see what her next move was.

“Okay.†Kitya twisted around so that she could survey the room. “Fancy enough in here, I suppose.†She mused before flicking out a wrist to make certain that the room was truly sealed. The subtle hint of magic flowed through her hands like the faintest of breezes before settling back at her side, her lavender hair barely lifting and landing down neatly along her shoulders once more. “You brought me here so do you feel comfortable enough talking to me?†She lowered her voice, trying her best to sound as gentle and caring as possible as to not frighten the other woman. “I want to try and help, if I can.â€

They were already at this point so there was no hiding things now. “Do you truly think that you can help me?†Pounamu questioned as she looked at the foreigner. “You’re not from Oba either, are you?†But she had seemed to be important to the Oban that she was dancing with earlier. He had trusted her to leave the ballroom and come here, after all. Not only that but he had intercepted that angry guest as well for them.

“I’m not.†Kitya smiled as she went to sit on a chair. The Yaeli woman removed her mask carefully and crossed her legs as she settled in, trying to appear as relaxed as possible to see if that would help matters. Years of spying on others and working groups to get them to open up to her had given her plenty of experience on body language and so it was with ease that she appeared almost natural in this strange room. “I’m from a place known as Yael. It’s a country that’s in the sea south of here.†She chuckled. “You can call me Nagini, that’s what most people know me as here. Dare I ask about you?â€

Yael. Pounamu blinked thoughtfully. She had heard a bit about that country, but had never seen anyone from that region before this. Mostly because they were still so skittish and fearful of outsiders that very few Yaeli ventured this way. At least that was what was spread about the estate whenever the servants were gossiping. This Yaeli woman seemed to not have any of that though, especially with how boldly she sat there without even flinching near Pounamu who was far from what any Yaeli would be familiar with. “Pounamu. I’m from Elikapeka…the main city of the hapuna.†She offered after another moment. “I became lost at sea when exploring and now I’m a contracted servant here, but I didn’t enter it willingly.â€

“I see.†Kitya let out a soft sigh. “When privateers pick up people they make them pay for their unwanted passage somehow. Unfortunately they feel like it’s fine if they sign the contract for you then.†She couldn’t help but to grimace at the thought of pirates, especially knowing what she knew now about her own sister. Not that her sibling would be willingly involved in such things…at least that was Kitya’s belief, but it still was part of her life now. “Pirates and smugglers are always getting into something it seems.†She mused quietly before looking back towards Pounamu. “You’re lucky though. I’m trying to gather some information about the owner of this estate so that we can try to get rid of these contracts. What do you think? Feel bold enough to help out?†She had seen the clear determination on the Kahi’s features when she reached out for her. It was enough to convince Kitya that it would be worth the risk to get an extra pair of eyes on this place.
