Asterix frowned as he looked over the pile of materials that he had borrowed from Quetzal. His older brother seemed to enjoy crafting things out of feathers he collected, like accessories and even those intricate dream catchers that he liked to hang up in their rooms, and so Asterix wanted to try his own hand at crafting. The materials were in a variety of colors, ranging all over the place from cool colors to bright warm colors like red and orange, and while Asterix enjoyed all of the colors he was at a loss about which ones to work with. So far he had tried removing ten pieces but after a few seconds each piece had been gingerly placed back into the original pile whose numbers had not depleted at all. “Can’t I just smoosh them all together?” He moaned as he leaned his head back, the youngling frustrated when he just wanted a whole myriad of colors like usual.

Quetzal chuckled as he looked over at his brother. He had originally been confused about the youngling’s request to borrow some crafting material, but once the rain started to pour down outside he didn’t protest and simply guided Asterix to his room. What else could they do today with the rainstorm keeping things miserable outside so that they couldn’t play along the beach or birdwatch like usual? “Try to pick just three at first. I would even say five, but if you have too many it might be hard to thread all the colors together.”

“Easy enough for you to say.” Grumped Asterix as he continued moving his hands over the array of beads and threads. “Should I do beads first or thread?” Would either of those options help him with deciding the full color scheme for his own dream catcher? He wanted to make one for himself to hang from the wall of his current room, the boy adding decor since they were finally stable for a few weeks if not months while visiting family. Plus, it would be something he could easily pick up and carry with him to wherever their family went next.

“Maybe pick the beads first.” Quetzal advised after a moment, pushing the wooden case of beads closer to his brother so that he could look over them more closely. “What about blue or yellow? Either of those?” They could pick the threads afterwards since the beads would stand out more.

“Hmm.” Asterix pursed his lips thoughtfully as he reached into the box and moved some of the beads around. “There’s green too. Are you suuuure I can’t use all of the colors?” He moaned again as he looked towards Quetzal pleadingly. He really didn’t want to pick just one or two!

A soft sigh left Quetzal’s lips as he scooted closer to his brother. “Fine. Maybe we could try to make some sort of rainbow pattern. One bead of each color though, if you really can’t narrow it down.” Too many beads and the catcher would be far too heavy to hang, so he had to make sure Asterix didn’t overdo things as he tended to do.

“I do like rainbows. Like the ones we see at the waterfalls.” Asterix beamed up towards his brother happily before looking back into the box so that he could pluck one bead of each color and line them up on the table. “What do you think? There’s some different shades of blue so I picked a darker one and a bright one along with yellow, orange, green, red and purple. Did I miss anything?”

“I think that works.” Quetzal acknowledged as he watched his brother place his choices out in a line. “You might want this one too for a transition, that yellowish green works well there.” He added one more bead before looking over it more. “Do you want any others before we pick a thread color? I think white or black works to make your colors pop more.”

“You said not to pick too many.” Asterix frowned at his brother before sneaking in another couple of beads to add to the rest. “But I won’t complain if I need more.” He admitted as his lips twisted upwards from the frown into a grin. “Maybe the black unless blue works?”

Quetzal could only shake his head with faint amusement before thinking about the question. “I do have a dark blue thread.” He answered after a moment, the teen digging around in the crafting supplies to bring one out. “We can use this one so that the colors still pop even though it has a bluish hue.” It was a midnight blue, almost like the color of the night sky during a particularly clear evening so surely it would appease Asterix.

“That works!” Asterix nodded as he took the thread from Quetzal. “Do I weave it with the black thread? Some of yours have multiple colors…” He noticed an indigo coil of thread as well that he reached for. “This one too would work!” Like an aurora, the magical sight that they had seen once long ago as a family before leaving their home island.

“We can do that.” Quetzal nodded at the color choices before taking the coils of thread and placing them side by side. “Want to watch and then try?” He picked up the blue thread first so that he could slip a bead on it. “You take a few beads, weave the threads and then keep going to keep your shape within the wooden frame. We can wrap the wooden frame afterwards with more thread or ribbons even.”

Asterix stared as he watched Quetzal work. “I could try.” He stated after a few minutes of watching, the usually energetic boy slightly antsy and wanting to try to fiddle with the threads himself. “So just take this piece, right?”

“Mmhmm.” Quetzal nodded as he guided Asterix through the first few steps. Once it looked like his little brother had the hang of weaving things the teen simply sat back and handed over a bead each time he reached that point. “Doesn’t look too bad.” He commented with a small smile as Asterix continued going, the youngling getting more confident with each twist of the thread.

“Right?” Asterix grinned as he kept going. “I guess I can kind of see the appeal of doing this.” Plus, it wasn’t like they could do much else since it was still raining outside. It wouldn’t be the first time that he would ignore the rain to dance or play around outside, but he simply hadn’t felt like being drenched this time. So it was nice to have another option besides napping or listening to stories.
