Abeni was traveling with Khalima, she wasn't bothered by the hard training; she felt in her heart that this would be good for her life and the lives of the other lions and creatures she might meet in her lifetime. She planned to then pass the knowledge she gained down the the next generation of lions when she joined the circle of life. She felt the sun on her fur. She closed her eyes and felt the love of her mother. The mother she knew would still live if she had a healer of Khalima's skill when she had been wounded when Abeni was a cub.

Khalima walked with her head low to the ground, her nose open as she looks for specific roots. Her apprentice wasn't very talkative and in ways that was a blessing, but she enters into her own mind quite a bit. Her first lesson is going to be identifying roots so when Khalima sends Abeni after some she can find them and not bring her the wrong things. Khalima stops and lifts her head a moment or two, looking at the short shrub-like plants the are near. There was a slight bitter smell in this area but one would completely miss it if they werent looking for it and knew what they were looking for. " Mouse, quiet your mind. What do you smell here?" She prompts her student, Her green eyes study her student as always.
Abeni was younger than Khalima so she still had a lot to learn and quieting her mind that often wandered was not easy to do. Still this was important to her so she was doing her best to do as she was told and focus on her teacher. She closed her eyes and let the random thoughts slip away so she could focus on the lesson. It took her a while to move through the different scents in the area there were small animals and there were plants around other than the smell she was seeking. She said "I smell the earth and animals in the area, lots of plants." She wasn't sure what plant she was supposed to be trying to smell for.

Khalima waits a moment, she has an insane amount of patience when it comes to teaching and she nods slowly to Abeni. "Gooood, now focus on the plants, You are looking for a difficult scent amongst them, a very bitter smell but not a green smell. It may also carry a dirt like smell to you." She almost softly instructs. She enjoys teaching and Abeni is pleasant to teach, never having to force her student to try, never having to push her that hard... Well at least not yet. "We are looking for a root called Gotu Kola, It is used for wounds, skin, blood circulation and the minds sharpness. It is very hard to smeeelll, for it is not a very pungent plant" Khalima states, Her green orbs in her head watching her apprentice with no hint of rush.
Abeni nodded her head and she closed her eyes trying to do as Khalima instructed she tried to separate the scents which wasn't easy and she knew she was bound to get it wrong while she was learning to do this. That was the point of finding a teacher. She hoped more lions would learn the healing arts since so few thought it was anything but dark magic. Which she thought was foolish indeed. So many might be saved with more healers. She ended up on the trail of a number of plants that turned out to be the wrong plant till she finally found the correct plant at least she thought it was the right one. "Umm is this one right?" She asked her tone a bit nervous.

Khalima watched her intelligent and diligent student, in a strange way she was enjoying teaching Abeni and was proud of how hard she was trying. She strolled up upon her student's question and lowered her head to smell, the half dried plant brushing the side on Khalimas spotted face. She opened her jaws slightly, drawing it in over her sharp fangs and found it was definitely the one however she knew by the shape of the leaf, even if this one was drying up. Khalima lifted her head and looked at Abeni and responded, her voice scratchy as always " Yes! Well done Mouse. Now though this plant is half dry, see how the leaves are rounded like a lillypad? See how each leaf grows on it's own stalk? this is what it looks like. It iisssszz usually greener than this one but this plant will do. Now we dig but carefully. We dig around it so we can roll the root ball over to harvest some, but not all. The plant can be rolled back into its place so it can be harvested more than once." She begins to show her, curling her claws at an angle into the harsh soil around the plant by a few inches " Also Mouse, take care to not dig right up against the plan, its roots spreed out a bit from the stalks and you can miss good medicine by destroying it"
Abeni listened and put to memory everything that Khalima was teaching her. She was glad she had found the plant she had been tasked to seek but a bit disappointed that it wasn't all that great. It would take practice and luck to find good plants. She watched as her teacher worked on the plant. She didn't feel a need to say anything; she thought it more important to be quiet and take everything in that she could learn while Khalima was willing to teach her.

Once she gets it loose, she uses her nose like a pig and lifts up on the dirt filled root ball and flips is on its side, exposing the roots. A few grubs wriggle in the dirt mass and he leans in, stealing the grubs form the soil, and eats them while shes at it without a 2nd thought. Half of Khalima's diet consisted of different bugs and some of her medicine does as well, She was always busy, always on the move between teaching Abeni to aiding others in need to going back to the jungle to feed and care for cubs. She does the most hunting for the cubs, rather than herself. She then starts to instruct again. " Alright, Mouse. Use one's paw to brush half on the soil from the roots, than comes the bitter part. One must use their front teeth to snip off some of the roots, about 6 will do. Mouse must keep them in her mouth too while we go back to the grinding stone to start making the medicine, spit will keep them fresh."
