Inspecting the offered supplies closely, Rhysi looked at them closely, frowning all the while. After a bit, she finally straightened and stated, “Acceptable.”

Itztenoch had been sent back to Earth several hours earlier, but Rhysi decided she would stay overnight and inspect several affected areas the next day. There was also still a great deal of both the flora and fauna of this wonder, Halle. Its knight had thankfully been amenable if a little…fussy. Apparently the beasts of this region were not to be dissected or experimented upon. Which was really not Rhysi’s general area of research, but she felt a little upset to be denied despite that.

Halle tried very, very hard not to lose his patience as the alien-alien girl inspected his camping equipment like she would be grading him on it later. He’d rather she had just stayed at the lodge anyway, the first floor was finally suitable, even pretty nice, for visitors. Plus he was letting her stay over on his wonder. This was him. Doing unearned favors. For someone who, after seeming like she was very knowledgeable and helpful in regards to the storms, only had to offer him some vague data and the assurance that it was useful to her.

Even so, he reminded himself, it’s good to have another set of eyes to observe the small dead areas the storms were causing in his forest. It’s good to have another opinion. It is worth having to deal with this terse, rude, judgemental

“Great! Glad you approve. Have fun.” He’d have the lodge to himself, safe and comfortable through the night. It’d be a good time to work on a circuit board he’d been given for the satellite work, by himself and without distractions of the alien or brother variety.

Watching the young human male retreat into the confines of his rustic cottage, Rhysi shook her head. What a wasted chance for the Knight to observe the forest and any potential storms closely. The flowering forest was truly an excellent environment to showcase examples of rapid aging and destruction in the storms’ aftermaths, dense as it was with both flora and native fauna. The effects within urban parks of Destiny City were nowhere near so obvious.

The timing of her and Itztenoch’s visit was also rather ideal, though it hadn’t seemed so initially. It’d taken hours of pleasantly warm and bright daytime for the first storm to arrive. But the wonder had provided much to scan and observe, even the host didn’t seem especially appreciative of this, particularly after the second hour and her insistence that they enter an underground area he’d mentioned. He’d been interestingly protective of the area in a way that made her think he was hiding valuable resources below. Unfortunately, scanning the area yielded nothing of the sort.

Checking the skies and finding them sadly clear, Rhysi entered her tent for the evening, pulling out several pieces of electronics and her tool box from subspace. If it was to be a quiet night, she’d spend it productively. A half hour nap would do as her rest further into the night. Recently she’d begin testing human energy drinks, and the results had been mostly satisfying.

It had been a quiet night, and Jason looked out his bedroom window to find a beautiful morning waiting outside. After a set of morning stretches, he powered back up into Halle. The life hack of magically powering up as a morning routine had yet to go stale for him, and so he was in a pretty good mood when he went out to check on his guest. He’d even brought her some breakfast in the form of very questionable scrambled eggs.

They’d been an idea he’d had in a dream last week, a sweet scramble that included the seasonal inspiration of peeps, rice paper, and coconut shreds. The result was actually Not Ugly! It also wasn’t delicious, far from it actually, but he still considered it something of a success.

When Halle reached the campground, he saw that the alien, Rhysi, was already outside, her (honestly really cool) wrist scanner up with a holographic panel listing out datasets. “Good morning, I brought you some food. If you…eat human food that is.” And if his food could be considered human food, which Luke often questioned.

The morning was very calm and clear, which, for Rhysi’s purposes, would hopefully mean a very clear set of comparisons when she measured energy output and the state of areas that had seemed positively affected by yesterday’s storm. That and her rather indulgent 45 minutes of deep sleep state left her in a good enough mood to smile at the knight. She even accepted the offering of food to go with her breakfast of energy drinks.

It looked rather novel, like an avian nest of sorts, including yellow blobs with eyes. Chicks? Well, they were looking up at her was she drove a fork through its body and tried a bite that including a piece of each component. It was extremely, intensely, almost painfully sweet. The textures were inconsistent to the point of being exciting.

“This is delicious,” Rhysi intoned, staring down at the plate and impressed enough to use two extra words to describe it.

“It…it is?” Halle, shaken to his core while also a little flattered, watched the alien eat the whole thing. And thin, with rising horror, watched her drink five Redbulls chased by a 5-Hour Energy shot. These aliens were truly…just built different.

As she swept both the cans and the plate and fork he was only lending her those weren’t for her to keep, into what he assumed was her subspace, Halle faintly suggested they go inspect both the areas that had been full of dead plants and trees. Then move onto the areas that had been blooming so beautifully and bountifully, the day before.

It was disturbing, honestly, and it hurt Halle in a way he couldn’t quite define to see the dead pockets of grass and plant, flowers withering on the vine and trees stripped bare of their spring leaves. Even the ever-enthusiastic Blessings refused to go near these spots, simply watching at a distance until the two left the area for the next one.

There were new dead spots too, not quite as far along as the others, but the effect was clear.

“Will getting rid of the storms stop this?” Halle asked grimly. “Will it fix my forest?”

With a shrug, Rhysi answered, “Maybe.” At the very least, no more storms would mean such areas would slow in their propagation. Though perhaps their condition may still spread. Perhaps she should visit again after the battery was taken over by the vanguard.

“Lunch?” The question was met with one that looked very surprised. Rhysi chose to interpret this as one of pleasure at her company and a readiness to meet her demands.

It wasn’t an answer he liked, but it was exactly as useless as he’d expected. Halle really wanted to kick the alien off his wonder right then and there, but. Well. He’d been experimenting with food made with some of his wonder’s herbs, the ones he knew for sure weren’t poisonous. And maybe Rhysi did have some kind of use. As a test subject.
