The night was warm and crackling with energy. Above, the sky was an unnatural purple. It sparked and fizzled, like something was just waiting to happen beyond the clouds.

Taenite was collecting energy. The Queen requested it, and he obeyed. It wasn’t that difficult anyway, and he enjoyed a nice stroll through the city and on the outskirts and in the parks.

With his personal interest in information, it was surprising how little was buzzing around them. Strange weather phenomena were interesting to a niche group, apparently. Chasing storms, or just deciding it was a weird thing in Destiny City and not something to worry themselves with.

If only the fools knew. It was a shame that there was no escaping the calamity that was coming for them. At least none that was available to the Negaverse. Perhaps the Dark Kingdom would survive whatever creature came to devour the world. Maybe they all deserved it. Maybe they would all suffer for whatever sins they’d committed.

Or maybe it would just blow over and they would all laugh and get drunk.

“It must be serious if you’re out here, boss,” Taenite observed with amused surprise as he approached Axinite at the top of a building. He’d felt the aura and teleported up to see who else was wandering around that night. Staying so close to the swirling storm didn’t seem very wise, even if there were taller buildings in the area.

Not that it bothered Taenite too much. Even with the sparking energy, there weren’t any strikes. At least not yet.

He placed one hand on his hip and the other hand he held out, drawing the energy from around them into a crackling orb.

Axinite lowered his gaze from the cloud to Taenite. He’d felt his energy signature before he’d had the pleasure of his company, and he wasn’t the only member of the Negaverse that had been out following the Queen’s direction.

He had his elbows at his side and held both hands out, open palmed, as he collected the energy from the air. More than just pulling it from the air, he seemed to be weaving it into a dense, ever growing ball of purple energy.

“I had a few free moments. I’ve been in my office for a while, I thought you’d appreciate that I was out getting some fresh air.”

He looked a different sort of tired these days, not just exhausted but navigating a mounting weight. The Information Branch had been frantically collecting whatever they could, and while everyone had their own duties to carry out, he hated feeling so unprepared.

But, it wasn’t like the information was out there, just available for the taking.

So, he was gathering energy as well.

“Queen Laurelite implied I might be of more use away from my desk at present. She’s adamant we all pull our weight and I understand she expects a great deal of it to further our plans. I admit, I’m not much a fan of gathering energy. I never was. Despite the circumstances, this is much nicer than our usual methods. It’s almost peaceful up here.”

And obviously very lucrative, judging by the growing energy orb he cradled in his hands.

“More suited for desk work?” Taenite hummed in mild amusement. “It’s a shame. I think seeing you out in the field would give a lot of people the morale boost they need to power through these dull tasks.”

He paused and shrugged, not wanting Axinite to take it the wrong way.

“I’m just saying… Draining energy isn’t exactly super exciting. Important, absolutely! The Queen commands it and we shall obey. There’s more going on than she’s telling us. Or, at least lowly peons like myself. Do you have any secrets up your sleeves that you’re not sharing?” Taenite grinned, watching the way Axinite weaved the energy together, and started trying to do the same. It meant taking his hand off his hip to join his other, but that was fine as long as he was learning something new.

“I would have loved to see you in action, back in the day. I know, I know, there’s a reason you’re on desk duty, but I’m here for you, boss. Just say the word, and I can have you on a relaxing trip to your destination of choice.”

He wasn’t even teasing! If Axinite allowed himself to be dragged out of the office more often, Taenite would absolutely take him wherever his heart desired.

“Brings back memories, huh? When you first brought me into the Negaverse until now, the potential end of the world. Poetic, don’t you think?”

Axinite heaved a heavy sigh and lifted his eyes from the orb to look at Taenite with great exasperation.

“I think sunrise and birdsong and love and hope are poetic. I don’t think ‘end of the world’ is. You’re thinking about traveling, in these conditions? Hm. I don’t know if traveling is worth the trouble to ‘relax’ anywhere. I like here,” he said, despite everything else. He seemed to be in competition with himself, to see how large an orb of energy he could weave. It was half the size of a basketball and showed no signs of slowing.

He supposed Taenite probably traveled in luxury. The last time he’d gone anywhere, he’d had to take a plane. The time before that, busses.

“Your imagination is probably kinder than reality. You might not have liked me back when I was in the field. “
