Tuesday, the 1st of April of the Earth year 2025 I will be in the living area working on a shield satellite this evening if anyone would like to join me.
Vyn sent the message out to the rest of the Vanguard not because he had any great wish for company, but because he hoped it would encourage others to put in their best effort during the ongoing crisis. They had all already been directed to deprioritize personal projects. In between gathering energy, Vyn thought it important to do all they could to secure the Earth however they were able, even if that meant committing himself to an activity he normally wouldn’t be too enthralled with.
Though his technical prowess was at least superior to an average Earthling’s, Vyn did not typically display the mechanical expertise others in the Vanguard might possess. He left those sorts of projects to those better suited to them and offered his assistance only when it seemed advantageous to do so. With Vyn, crafting generally meant flower crowns and wreaths and whatever knitting or crocheting project he’d undertaken in an effort to relax. If his efforts ever included anything similar to shield blueprints and rare components, it was at the side of someone whose interests veered in that direction.
So it might seem odd to some of the others to find Vyn exactly where he said he would be, in the living area of the Vanguard house, blueprint pulled up for reference as he slowly and painstakingly assembled a shield. He was not in uniform, but dressed in comfortable Earth attire of leggings and a loose t-shirt. Rarer still was the lack of flowers in his pale yellow hair, replaced for the moment by a simple headband to keep said hair out of his face. Vyn sat on the floor like he needed the lower vantage point to concentrate. He worked quietly but dutifully, eyes a bit narrow as he endeavored to maintain his focus, mouth set in a studious frown.Quote: Future dated a few days to not interfere with Kae’s ORP! This thread will probably be open for about a week before I post a soft close!

Rhysi stepped into the common room, a canvas bag of parts and equipment in one hand, a box of Earth's convenient and delicious Uncrustables under the other. Coming up and out of intensive work was not unlike stepping out of a spaceship once again. The world felt new and strange, and her body had a list of unmet needs. It would likely be best not to re-enter her lab for a little awhile, and she fully intended on returning right away. But Commander Vyn's message had intercepted the impulse in a timely manner, being with others in a different work environment counted as a full break, right? Perhaps, if she worked slowly, it would count as resting. Settling in near Vyn, she gave him a nod and a terse, "Commander." It was good to see him working with the more practical and controllable sciences, though she was sure his flowers were appealing to... other people. She offered a smile that she felt was adequately encouraging. Rhysi's uniform was covered in oil spots, dust, and something unidentifiable but intensely purple. From the canvas bag came a set of much smaller parts and some calibration equipment. Satellite pieces suited for this kind of shared space and activity. As she set up, she asked Vyn and the others who had gathered, "Summer Festival 2023. Unique lightning and flora bursts." Those particular pieces of summer phenomena had never quite left her mind. But the data simply wasn't there for a full report or further research. Still, she found it interesting, the same way much of Earth's other odd events. Those of this locale most especially. "Signs?"

Andreiya had two assistants, constant in his life and perpetually involved in whatever project he was managing.
Steve preferred paperwork and Dylas the greenhouse, and though Andreiya had pleaded with each of them for any assistance, they both elected to handle their affairs privately. As if they didn’t understand the severity of their situation! They both knew about the storms, they’d been acting anxious and jittery any time the skies were purple.
Andreiya didn’t blame them, he’d have preferred to curl up and hide too, but Lyndin was expecting them.
And they were here for a reason.
If they couldn’t find Caedus’ starseed–or a way to save Velencya, or restore Velenia, then perhaps they could defeat some horrible Earth-faring threat.
Steve had four hands but they were so little. Dylas had no hands at all.
It fell to Andreiya to complete this task alone.
Well, sort of alone, because as soon as Vyn offered the living room, he was quick to accept. It was a far better work space than where he’d been before and he’d avoided the area only because he was afraid of cluttering their shared space. It was different when there was a planned event, and he was still in the process of setting up a little work space for himself. He had a fold out table for a work station and stood behind it; his toolbox was at his feet and he seemed ready to work.
He was dressed in his uniform, but unlike Rhysi’s, his was still clean. His hair was pinned back with barrettes and he was diligently working on screwing together a few small pieces he’d previously prepared. Were these things connected? It was hard to tell, Earth and all its non-artificial environmental events were so strange and unpredictable. He didn't know if they were connected but he shared his thoughts anyway.
“Earth summers are unpleasant. There were also a lot of bugs. I wish I had gotten more data on the flora bursts, I really wanted to figure out how to apply that to my projects,” he lamented. It was very hard to put his plant projects off to the side; he didn’t want to lose his progress but he didn’t want to lose Earth, either. He perked up a bit just slightly, finding Rhysi quickly. He tried not to sound too hopeful when he asked, “Have you documented recent floral bursts?”

Like Vyn, Aliez wore normal human attire that evening. A lightweight baggy sweater and comfortable floral shorts. His wavy hair was fashioned back in braids, gathered at the back in a small ponytail, although functionality was more of the focus than style.
He’d been working in the kitchen, gathering a pot of hot water and several teacups on a tray to bring into the living area. It was set on an unused surface and selected a flavor of tea that the earthlings decided was supposed to be calming. He poured a cup for himself and Vyn, but there was a clear indication that it was available to anyone who wanted some.
To say he was stressed lately was an understatement. There was so much to do and so little time to do it, especially when compared to what was normally a short time for them.
He made himself comfortable beside Vyn and set his tea on the table out of the way, before looking up at both Rhysi and Andreiya, interested in the potentially documented floral bursts, but didn’t interrupt. He picked up a component of the satellite to start working on fastening the pieces together as he listened.

The invitation was... a surprise, but not an unwelcomed one. Daesva didn't... spend as much time in the house as she probably should--or rather, didn't spend as much time around the others as she probably should. She'd gotten into the habit of working off-site, and the fact she was looking into trying to get a motorcycle to fix up before all of this... monstrous threat, thing, happened...
Well. It was more important to put her personal projects to the side, and the fact she could join the others like this was... it was nice, actually.
So, that's how Daesva arrived with a bag of supplies and tools for the construction of some satellites, a small foldup table under her arm, and also... a rather large veggie supreme pizza, loaded with every veggie possible that the shop had. And some extra cheese on half, because she especially enjoyed that. The bag of silicon plates and utensils she balanced on top, along with a lot of cloth napkins and a package of wet wipes, were an attempt to help keep things... somewhat clean, which pizza admittedly was not very much so.
The human attire of jeans, fuzzy socks, and an oversized sweater in dark red and black stripes, was absolute comfort to her, or at least in so far as she was really comfortable to wear for the time being.
It was at least easy to set her stuff down as she listened to Rhysi and Andreiya conversing about some of the--overly common, in her opinion--oddities that happened in the city a few years ago. The pizza and whatnots were set on the ground as she worked to set up the table to keep said pizza and whatnots on. Better to not put that on the table with sensitive equipment...
She offered small smiles to Aliez and Vyn, but for the moment was quiet as she set up her offering to the group at large.

Oh yes, there had been the large, fairly aggressive insect swarms. They'd been satisfying target practice. Rhysi's expression turned a little smug at the memory. Nodding toward Aliez and Daesva, Rhysi briefly eyed the tea the former had brought in before opting to pull out a Mountain Dew from her subspace. She planned to stay up at least another 24 hours after all. "Briefly observed on Earth," she nodded. "Recently at the Lysithean wonder of Halle. Still assessing the data for report." She paused and the stared flatly at Andreiya, silently assessing him for a moment. "You should go. A forest full of flowering endemic life." He did have those odd proclivities toward small creatures. Back on topic, Rhysi continued, "A general summary would be sharp bursts of rapid growth, sometimes followed by rapid aging. There were some 'dead zones' native animals clearly avoided." She made a considering face, then added, "Perhaps the humans in the city are having their life spans depleted." Rhysi didn't seem too concerned with that possibility, it just seemed fairly interesting to theorize.

Vyn glanced up briefly as each of his comrades arrived. His mouth twitched like he might smile, but he had a difficult time maintaining one. Earth’s circumstances were dire and the shields too important for him to allow his attention to stray from his task for long. He mumbled thanks to Aliez for the tea and Daesva for the pizza. Daesva’s arrival received the longest stare in acknowledgement. Vyn had not expected her but was pleased to see her all the same.
He frowned at his work while Rhysi and Andreiya began to converse, glancing back and forth between the blueprint and the components within his reach. The subject of Earthen summers earned a grimace from Vyn; summer weather certainly didn't meet his preferences. He did his best to mask his confusion about the rest.
“Summer 2023…” Vyn cast his memory back while reaching out tap Aliez’s hand, silently letting him know he was attempting to fit two pieces that didn’t go together without embarrassing him. “Was that the year some of us disappeared? No, that was the year before…” he answered himself. “I lose track sometimes. This year will be our fourth summer. Unless you count the year we arrived. It wasn’t quite autumn yet our first day here.”

Aliez glanced up from his work when Vyn tapped his hand, and then realized that he was placing the wrong two pieces together. He sighed and removed the one from top and placed it back on the table. He would have to look more carefully at the blueprints again. Or maybe he could make himself useful another way.
“I do not count the year we arrived,” Aliez frowned as he picked up the correct piece. He had spent most of his studies on medicine and healing. Which was also why he was a horrible shot with the blaster that he no longer had.
Seeing Daesva arrive was bittersweet, and he tried to offer her a smile, but was really just trying to hold himself together and not embarrass everyone with uncontrolled emotions. He was pleased to see them coming together like this, but also sad that it took something horrible to make it happen.
“That was not the year we were taken to Astraya,” he further confirmed, ducking his head down again and was grateful that at least Rhysi hadn’t been there to witness his outburst once they’d returned home.

Andreiya resisted the urge to grimace when Rhysi withdrew the Mountain Dew, but he was vocal about his distaste for most Earth novelties. She might as well have been drinking battery acid.
“Ugh,” Andreiya said, to no one in particular. He simply had a distaste for much of the shenanigans they’d encountered since their arrival.
“When this is all over with, I will seek out the Lysithean Wonder of Halle. I have let bad experiences cloud my judgment and refrained from otherworldly travel. But I really need more samples so I can continue my research. I’m working on a new paper now, I will have it posted–”
He had to bite his tongue. “...Well, all of that work is paused for now. But when all of this is over, I’ll be able to finish it. I’m very excited about some of the cultivation I’ve accomplished.”
Resisting the urge to start talking about it now felt like such an impossible task but there were plenty of more immediate concerns.
“I haven’t been able to get very good readings during the storms here. I’m trying, but I am never in the right place at the right time. I want to know why there is rapid growth but sometimes followed by rapid aging? I haven’t spent enough time with humans to see any notable differences.”
He’d rather be spending time with plants than humans but he didn’t want to say as much considering he might need those humans to take him to more plants.

"Abducted? By aliens?" Wide-eyed, Rhysi gazed at those who had been on Earth well before she had arrive. Earth's alien abductions were so strange and interesting. "Were there really cows?" Fascinating. As she at turns spoke and listened, Rhysi's hands stayed active, making minute adjustments, testing, then readjusting once more. "Rebuilding dead worlds, finding resources. It's all one." She gave Andreiya an encouraging nod. Avoiding senshi worlds would be cutting off the closest examples to their own work and collective goal. It would be beneficial for him to get over it. The question of rapid aging was one that interested her intensely, particularly given her own focus on energy research. "Adult humans live too long without notable changes. Perhaps human infants should be tested." Her brow scrunched at the thought. She didn't want to be around those. "Or short lived insects?" Rhysi shrugged, "The creature is a battery, but possibly a rechargeable one." The increased energy levels may be due to the creature and attendant storms, but that didn't mean the extra energy originated from them. She wouldn't be surprised if the energy instead was forced out of the target world, fueling its own oncoming destruction. But that was just a fun little thought. What truly matter was the Vanguard being able to master and use that battery to their own ends.

She wasn't proud of her lack of... attention to others. But the past already transpired, and all she had was to make her choices in the present. So, she was here. She set up the small table, putting the pizza box on top of it and resting the plates and such alongside it. Free for anyone to grab. She moved over to the table Rhysi, Vyn, and Aliez sat at, joining them as she pulled out a few parts she'd been working on earlier.
The conversation between Andreiya and Rhysi, though, caught her attention--she didn't recognize some of the events they spoke about, but...
"We were able to collect some interesting data when Caelyna, Rhysi, and I visited a Mercury Knight's wonder," she stated calmly, glancing up at the latter mentioned. "The lightning both drained energy and pushed more into whatever it struck, if it was capable of conducting energy. It was rather fascinating." The redhead paused as she considered the potential issues of bringing up how they'd also been struck themselves... "I got some good video and audio recordings of the strikes, though I haven't done any in-depth investigations frame by frame. But I do need to compare the readings with the ones I got on a senshi's asteroid," she reminded herself with a slight wince, realizing she'd yet to do that....
"I enjoyed visiting both places, though. I'd like to visit more worlds and wonders, when all this is done."

“Oh,” Vyn said, pausing to blink blandly when Aliez mentioned Astraya. He grimaced again, more noticeably this time. Like Andreiya, Vyn had an aversion to haphazard hijinks. “I meant the disappearance before Astraya. With the fissures and the strange creatures. I think the Earthlings called them gargoyles.”
Vyn would rather not think of Astraya any more than he had to. After the emotions from the battle on the hilltop had faded, he had been able to hope that the Vanguard could still work together, that their shattered faith and differences of opinion would not come between them, that Earth hadn’t changed them all so much that they couldn’t see a way forward, that they were each still working with the best interests of Velencya and Velenia in mind. Astraya had been a reckoning for Vyn—proof that the Vanguard could still fracture.
Before then, when they’d fought the gargoyle-like creatures together, Vyn had been reassured. Now he remained uncertain of where they all stood. He could only do his best at what he was best at—protecting those under his command.
Study and experimentation and the building of shields, those were things Vyn was versed in but didn’t necessarily enjoy. He listened to Daesva recount her recent adventure with a pensive frown. Vyn was sure it was all very intriguing, and the data may very well benefit them when they inevitably dealt with the creature, but enthusiasm was hard to come by for him.
“I haven’t traveled off Earth since…” Vyn couldn’t make himself discuss Astraya, so he simply trailed off, at least until another thought came to mind. “Oh, but there was the museum. With Almadel. That wasn’t such a bad experience, although I think we were lucky to miss the worst of it.”

Aliez tilted his head curiously at Rhysi, trying to understand what she was asking, while also trying to piece together the information they’d already told her.
“Oh… we went willingly,” he offered, although he could see how the memory was affecting Vyn, so he kept his voice lowered in a more somber tone. “No cows, Earthen or Velencian. There were robots, though. It was… an eye opening experience.”
He kept his eyes down on his task, glad that she seemed interested in Andreiya’s information, and in Daesva's stories about other worlds, because he wasn’t sure he could stomach giving more detail about what happened.
“Maybe when this is over, we will be able to contact our families once more,” he suggested to Vyn, hoping it would raise his spirits. He missed home. He missed his parents and their close knit community. But they had a duty as part of the Vanguard, and Aliez wasn’t willing to abandon the Commodore or their world.

Andreiya glanced at Daesva’s pizza somewhat longingly; it smelled good but there were so few Earth foods he thought he could enjoy. His stomach protested even when his mind did not. It smelled good, in any case. His willpower might not last forever, and he realized he’d been staring at it for a few seconds. Blinking, he shook his head and returned his focus on the panel he was working on. He wanted to see Rhysi’s recordings and nodded enthusiastically to indicate his encouragement.
“I’d like to call home,” he agreed. He’d managed to reach them a while ago, and he was happy with his research, but it still wasn’t enough. He wondered if they knew about ‘the Calamitous Hollow’. He wondered if they were afraid for them.
He wondered if they were just so certain that they could divert it that they didn’t have to be.
Andreiya stood up a little straighter and worked a little faster, committed to the idea that if his family–if Velencya–had faith in them, they should be successful.
Lyndin wouldn’t let them fail.
“When this is all over, we should try. If we are visiting other worlds, maybe we can even take a trip home!”
He tried not to sound too excited but his heart was already set in it.
Quick to reel himself in, he cleared his throat and added, “And maybe more trips to the Senshi worlds, and all the Knight Wonders. If you do travel anywhere, please tell me how it is. And come visit my greenhouse, I want to show you what I’m working on. I want to find a world like Velenia, I want to know what they did to replenish it. I want to research the plants, maybe I can make something compatible. I want–oh, the shields.”
He was gesturing too much with his tools and sighed heavily. “I am focusing. I just don’t have anything useful to say about these storms. And I am anxious and having a hard time keeping quiet. I am eager to be done with this trouble so I can go back to my research.”

"Robots?" Robots were much more interesting than cows. However, it didn't appear that they had acquired said robots during their excursion, so it sounded like something of a wasted trip. Though Alieze's claim that it was eye-opening did sound like they at least got some information. She'd have to check into the incident when her hands and time were more free. Further talk of off-world travel, recently (and very profitably) with Daesva on Mercury and last year's kosopod collecting venture with the rest of the vanguard brought pleased, almost proud nods from Rhysi. But when contacting, even visiting home was mentioned, Rhysi turned her attention back to the calibration read-outs. She wasn't interested in a world that used to be, that failed them, and is now left behind. The important thing was what they could build now and in the future. Still, she assured Andreiya with a solemn, "I will see your greenhouse." She was both sympathetic at the idea of being forced away from her research and a little smug that current events had enhanced her own. She should see about collecting him seeds and sprouts from other worlds. Even if it was heavily organic research, it had merit. It had a future.Provided they survived to make it.
