Follows When hope is lost

Oberon had no idea how he was supposed to get in contact with Lyndin. He was frustrated and trying not to think too much about how the Earth was in grave danger. Or how his friend might end up needing to be the sacrificial lamb in order to help save everyone.

It wasn’t fair. They’d figured out ways to perform miracles before, so why not now? It was lazy and in part, Oberon wondered if people were just afraid of the Velencians. They didn’t trust aliens from another world, and yet they opened their arms and homes to the Senshi who had been lost among the planets and stars until after Lyndin tried taking his friend’s starseed.

The purple haze and clouds still covered the sky, and every so often lightning flashed. A park was the best place to view the rainless storm, but Oberon certainly hadn’t expected to see the very person he’d been looking for.

Even at six-four, Oberon was nowhere close to the Velencian’s height. And he certainly wasn’t as broad. Part of him regretted focusing more on science instead of sports, but he was doing his best.

“I’m surprised you’re still here,” he admitted as he approached, his gloved hands in the pockets of his jacket.

“You know there’s a space monster coming this way, right?”

On his own, Lyndin was a sight to behold. Tinkering with a satellite dish fixed to a skinny obelisk in the middle of the park, of course he would have stood out.

He did not startle when Oberon approached, nor did he look up from his work. He was perfectly still aside from the careful maneuvering of a tiny screwdriver. He did not seem to have come equipped with weapons or armor, just a toolbox that sat at his feet. Even his cape had been left behind, despite the chilliness in the air.

“I have heard the rumors, yes.” He sounded busy, focused but without any annoyance. “Why does my presence surprise you?”

He hadn’t wanted to startle the man, working on what looked like some kind of monitoring device in the park. It was definitely a good place to get a reading on the sky.

“I would have thought you’d have abandoned Earth by now,” he said simply, maybe a little too casually for the situation, but Oberon’s attitude shifted more towards blazé when he wasn’t diving too deep into his thoughts and memories. And what ifs and could have beens and what could he have done better…

“Why bother sticking around on a planet with a death sentence?”

Maybe he wanted to make sure Caedus died. Or make sure Earth was actually destroyed so they could pick over whatever was left. Maybe set up their new world on Earth’s corpse.

Oberon sighed, keeping his darker thoughts to himself. He knew if they had any chance of survival, it would likely need to be with the Vanguard’s help.

“What do we do? Is there anything we can do?”

He assumed the Vanguard were already helping the Negaverse, but he couldn’t just give up a chance to try.

“I am here,” Lyndin said patiently, “because I know what it is like to lose your world, and I would not wish the same of anyone. Your planet is flawed, but beautiful. I do not wish to see it destroyed any more than I wish to see you banished to the stars.”

He did a last adjustment and then stood up, finally glancing at Oberon. He had a tired look in his eye, but it was determined nonetheless, and despite the would-be fatigue, he showed no sign of slowing down any time soon.

“There is plenty that can be done, Oberon. What do you want to do?”

Oberon kept his hands in his pockets. Part of it was with hope that Lyndin knew he wasn’t there to try and fight or be a threat. Not that Oberon had any delusions in thinking that he could ever have the upperhand in a fight with Lyndin, but still.

He was trying not to show too much interest in whatever strange instrument Lyndin was working on, but he doubted he’d get out of the conversation without at least mentioning it, if Lyndin didn’t feel like volunteering the information.

“That’s a ridiculous question,” he frowned. “My answer is too broad and to narrow it down will depend on what needs to be done and what can be done. Stopping this creature from devouring the Earth is probably a good goal. But I don’t know if us technologically primitive humans can even be useful to whatever you’re working on. We can’t traverse space except to our own named Worlds or Wonders. No one sees the benefit of gathering energy because it’s what the Negaverse and Dark Mirror do. Most don’t even want to work with you because of what you did over two years ago.”

Oberon had wanted to help. He’d been one of the first to volunteer his energy. He’d tried helping them collect what they could. And when things changed and it was clear that Lyndin was using the Negaverse to accomplish his goals, of course Oberon was going to do whatever he could to stop him and save Caedus.

“I heard a story about hunters that went after creatures like the one we’re facing. Any chance we could get in touch with them? Or is that a lost to history kind of thing, and another dead end?”

It did not seem to be a ridiculous question to Lyndin, though he did not protest when Oberon shared his sentiments on the matter. He did not scold him, nor really even seem to be affected by the emotion in Oberon’s worlds.

Lyndin remained unreadably calm as he listened, and made sure Oberon had said his piece before answering.

“There were hunters, once. I have not heard of their whereabouts for several hundred of your years. We do not frequent the same corners of the galaxy, nor do we have much reason to interact. Last I heard, they were hunting more for sport than necessity. However, I have asked Velencya to transmit all information available. I will see if they can make contact as well.”

Hunting was not one of Lyndin’s skills; if it were, perhaps he’d have located Caedus much faster.

“I do not expect you all to understand my position. Now, or in the past. I would like to see Earth protected and thriving for years to come. If you do not have the technology for that yet, I see no reason to deny you aid with our own. Naturally, I will not force it on you. I understand there are those of you who disagree with our methods. Or, mine.”

Again, he spoke with no bitterness. It was simply a fact.

“But it serves no one to see Earth destroyed. I’ve been investigating the prison it was kept in.” He could see the curiosity in Oberon’s eye for the technology in front of him but he wasn’t going to force him to ask. “It’s leaking a very unique type of energy. I’m trying to get some calculations based on that.”

Oberon was relieved when Lyndin offered an explanation for the instrument he was working on, and while he was still being cautious, his curiosity could not help but move him closer to it to inspect.

“Unique energy? So you’re using this to try and isolate… particles in space? You’re going to track whatever is coming for us that way?”

Ah, he probably sounded a little too enthusiastic about it, so Oberon crossed his arms over his chest. Which also kept his hands to himself. The last thing he wanted to do was to mess up whatever it was Lyndin was working on. Even if they didn’t share the same views.

It wasn’t as though they had much of a chance for help from anyone else. The Negaverse? Maybe they would help them until Earth was safe, but Oberon would never trust them.

“Several hundred years could put them too far to help, anyway,” he sighed, his shoulders slumping with disappointment. If they couldn’t get outside help, then they would just have to figure it out for themselves.

Finally, unable to help himself, Oberon inched closer to the machine, and crouched down to see the mechanisms a bit easier, marveling at the sophisticated technology.

He’d always been interested in technology. He’d always been good with technology, too. Programming was just a game for him, and building machines was as simple as playing with legos. He could have gone down a path to hone those skills more, but with his dreams already fulfilled, there was little point.

Now, though… he couldn’t help but want to learn more. Although he supposed it was wrong of him to even think to ask.

“The energy that the prison is leaking… is it from the serpent, or what kept it contained? Or both? If we could keep it shrunk down to a manageable size, maybe we can find a place to have it taken. There are museums out in space. Why not a zoo? Although captivity is not ideal. Neither is worlds being destroyed.”

Lyndin let Oberon come as close as he pleased; he trusted him not to interfere with the machine. Not when Earth’s well-being was at stake. Oberon’s curiosity was not well masked but he seemed to be wrestling with pride or reluctance. Lyndin saw no reason to press the matter.

“I find myself reluctant to approve of any sort of ‘zoo’ but I understand your intentions and find it more humane than the alternatives. I appreciate your stance on the matter. Captivity is preferable to death, provided it is a dignified existence. And, it is certainly no question that the sacrifice of one life would be worth the lives of many.”

His eyes lingered on the screen for a few seconds, more because he was checking functionality than because he had unearthed anything useful.

“The energy I’m tracking is specifically related to the ‘prison’. We had a familiar sample in our database so it was easy enough to set something up.” He gestured to the device in front of him. “I don’t have a sample of the creature's energy, specifically, but I have a hunch that it’s generating the storms as it moves. I’m not sure how the prison factors into this yet, except I know that it’s moving erratically. There’s no clear trajectory. I can’t figure out if the signal is just being obstructed or if it’s actually just disappearing and reappearing. That’s what this is for.”

Oberon bristled, and he looked up to shoot a glare at Lyndin.

“You don’t think I know that?” he hissed. “You barely gave us any time to figure things out on our own. Your Vanguard barely wanted anything to do with us and we’d never met anyone who was born beyond Earth, except a smarmy merchant that looks part dragon. Of course we didn’t trust you with our energy. We’ve seen what people who collect energy do with it.”

He’d given his energy, but he didn’t blame anyone else. The last time they’d dealt with giving Caedus energy and got into Negaspace, so many of them had died. The Negaverse and Dark Mirror collected energy for their own purposes. It was unfair of Lyndin and the Vanguard to show up and expect Senshi and Knights who never imagined there being a whole civilization living beyond the stars to exist.

They were right to be paranoid and cautious. It wasn’t as though many, if any, in the Vanguard went out of their way to reassure them. They were reclusive and secretive and difficult to understand.

Oberon shook his head, irritated that Lyndin would bring that up when their goal -- he thought -- was to save Earth.

“If it’s generating storms as it moves, why are there storms everywhere? At least that’s what it seems. Jupiter, Saturn, beyond that--”

There were others in the database that had been set up to collect information. He didn’t know how close they were to Earth, which made it even stranger.

“Does that mean it’s already been to Earth?” he gestured up at the sky. “What’s the point? Is it also trying to gather energy from various places until it’s strong enough to attack?”

If Lyndin was in any way riled by Oberon’s words, nothing in his posture or expression revealed it. Even his voice remained neutral. “I don’t think it’s made it here yet. I think it’s trying to travel but can’t make the final push. When we travel, we manipulate the particles around us to move through empty space faster. This creature isn’t doing that. It seems like it’s trying to tear through space. Here, look at these readings,” he said, withdrawing a device that had once been a smart phone. He’d modified it, and after pressing a few buttons, he handed it over.

The screen displayed a line of numbers, which he explained, “Just before every storm, there’s a gravitational distortion. The numbers track fifteen minutes before the storm, at the start of it, during, end of it, and fifteen minutes after.”

There was a consistency in each: a normal reading, and then a drastic change at the start of the first lightning strike, which remained consistent for the duration of the storm, and then another drastic change towards the end where it returned to nearly exactly how it had been prior to the storm. Fifteen minutes after the storm, everything seemed normal again.

However, there was a notable trend that the strength of the first lightning strike was growing, and the duration of the storms were getting slightly longer.

“Think of it like a barrier that it’s trying to cut through. Right now it’s not strong enough to do more than press against it. It’s probably generating energy as it moves so it might only be a matter of time. I won’t be able to solidify that theory until I have more data. I’m tracking the energy it’s leaking to identify if, and when, it takes a ‘shortcut’. It might be useful to know if we can disrupt it mid-travel.”

Oberon’s reluctance lasted less than a blink of an eye. Of course he was going to look at whatever Lyndin was willing to show him. He took the repurposed smart phone and glanced over the numbers it was showing.

“I’ve never seen actual spacetime readings,” he admitted, trying to keep the awe out of his voice but not quite managing. “It’s like it’s a balloon it’s trying to pop. <********>...” he hissed, tapping on the screen to see what other numbers he could look at.

A barrier that it’s been trying to cut through, sure… but this was more than that. The proposed energy explosion resulting from a breach in the actual fabric of space would be catastrophic. Would Earth even survive that? Much less being devoured by whatever comes through the tear.

“So it’s trying to create some kind of wormhole… does it exist on a different plane of existence than our own? We don’t have anything like… photon torpedoes to blast it out of the sky. That’s still part of our science fiction. No way our tech is that advanced.”

Lyndin waited patiently while Oberon examined the screen and didn’t seem to be in any sort of rush to have the item returned.

“I don’t know if it ‘exists’ on a different plane, but I think it has the ability to manipulate them. The largest storm, the one with the most readings, is either functioning as a gateway to whatever realm it’s in, or it’s in the storm itself. I haven’t been able to pick up any readings on the matter but I’m not going to stop looking.”

Lyndin’s eyes lingered on the numbers for a moment but he looked up to the sky as if he’d find an answer there.

Things were never so easy.

“Vanguardian technology is not constructed with the intent to destroy. We have what might pass as ‘weapons’ but their intention isn’t to be used against living creatures so much as they are tools to help us process resources. I’m sure things could be recalibrated with the intention to do damage, but…”

It was clearly a distasteful idea to him and he wouldn’t have suggested it if the circumstances were different. “I’ll need to do more research before I can commit to anything. I don’t think we can produce anything capable of doing immense damage to a very large creature so I’m still hoping to find a more practical alternative. But, if it is all we can do to try and stop it,” he shrugged. “I will build whatever I can. I intend to do everything in my power to help protect your world, practical or otherwise.”

A creature with the ability to manipulate planes of space. To create a gateway? It didn’t seem like it would stop until it broke through and got what it wanted.

Leaving a world destroyed in the process.

Oberon frowned as he continued to look over the numbers, memorizing what he could, if only so he could try and take measurements of his own. Or at least compare what Lyndin found to data from others.

Curiously, he glanced up. He could hear the distaste in the man’s voice, even if his expression seemed unchanging. Oberon wasn’t sure if he was only hearing in his voice what Lyndin wanted him to hear, or if he felt that strongly about something.

And yet…

“Something to stop it from coming through…”

It wasn’t a question. Lyndin said he would build whatever he could, and even said their technology wasn’t intended against the living.

A brief memory returned of the sky colored with light and energy from a destroyed fragment of a moon.

“The leaking energy… any chance we could use it against the creature? You know how suspicious my kind can be about energy giving. Even if it’s to save them. But is it possible to use its energy as a weapon against itself?”

The Space Cauldron
PostPosted: Thu Mar 27, 2025 10:53 am

“There is always a chance,” Lyndin confirmed, though he did not seem particularly optimistic about anything that might require asking others to help them gather energy. “I’ve asked my Vanguard to gather what energy they can. The storms here on Earth have been discharging an excess of energy lately. I can only imagine that the creature itself is a phenomenal source of power. I know there are those who disagree with gathering energy, even if through as harmless a method as our Source Stones, but I’m afraid it is a necessity at present. We’ll be able to do more with it than without it, and we don’t really have the luxury of time.”

He glanced at the readings on the screen once more but they were only one variable to consider in all of this.

“I think, with some refinement, we could destabilize it with its own energy. I think there is merit to the technology they used to trap it before. If they were able to funnel its own energy into powering a prison, I believe it would be similarly possible to siphon its energy and strike back with whatever we can harvest.”

A way to destabilize it with its own energy… but they would need to gather enough energy to even establish a cage for it.

Oberon frowned, his eyebrows knit in heavy thought, before he lifted his eyes to Lyndin and held the phone with its data back to him.

“Take mine. Please. You have more use for my energy than I do, and I can give myself a small boost with my magic once you do.”

He hated that so many Senshi and Knights had essentially turned their backs on the Velencians in their time of need. They could have all been traveling the stars together, but instead, the Vanguard was forced to rely on the Negaverse for protection. Or at least that was what Oberon could only guess. Someone who treasured life like Lyndin seemed to…

“You’re not really allied with the Negaverse, are you?” he asked, but it didn’t seem like a question that needed to be answered. He still had his gloved hand held out with the expectation of his energy being taken. With it outstretched, his jacket sleeve had pulled back just enough so some of the scars were visible.

“I’m good with secrets,” he added, just in case Lyndin doubted his intentions.
